Prayer to St. Jude

Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of hopeless cases, of things almost despaired of. Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone. Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege given to you, to bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly (your request) and that I may praise God with you and all the elect forever. I promise, O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you. Amen.

Did you know?

Electrical fires are more common than one might think. The Electrical Safety Foundation says home electrical fires account for an estimated 51,000 fires each year, nearly 500 deaths, and more than 1,400 injuries. Certain conditions can lead to electrical home fires. The National Fire Protection Association indicates home fires can result from overloading electrical outlets and inadequate distribution of lighting equipment. When this occurs, these fires most often originate in a bedroom. Another common cause of electrical home fires is faulty wiring and related equipment malfunction. It is important for homeowners to be aware of potential electrical issues and remedy them quickly to avoid home fires. Ensuring electrical systems are up to code and addressing issues with the help of a qualified electrician can reduce the risk of electrical fires.

How to create an outdoor living retreat

Al fresco entertaining has taken off in recent years. It’s much more common today to find homeowners who want to extend living spaces to the outdoors in meaningful ways that go beyond a few lawn chairs and a stand-alone grill. Dream backyard living rooms mirror similar spaces indoors and contain features like cozy corners, lush furniture and televisions or movie projectors. Plus, they often abut additional outdoor luxuries like fully functional kitchens. Homeowners have various options when designing outdoor living spaces. Above all else, spaces should be created with the goal of encouraging people to get together. Here are some ideas.

Poolside retreat

Homeowners with pools and other water features likely want this area to be the star of the entertaining space. Furniture will be more of the lounging variety, with comfortable chaises and spots to catch the sun. If a swim-up bar isn’t possible, a rolling bar cart can be stocked with essentials for cocktails or mocktails for the kids. Furniture near the pool will be exposed to a lot of sun, so look for durable, sun-resistant fabrics.

Fireside nook

Gathering around an outdoor fireplace or fire pit is a treat when the weather cools down. Mirror the look of the same setup indoors by arranging outdoor sofas so they flank the fireplace. Add some ottomans or side tables for stowing mulled cider or hot chocolate. A mantel above the fireplace can hold pots of greenery or candles that add to the ambiance.

Consider a custom banquette

Unused corners on a patio or rooftop retreat can utilize a custom-made banquette that provides the functionality of a sofa sectional outdoors. Have a contractor design it to the exact specifications of the area, and add a rug to ground the space.

Vary the flooring

Depending on the entertaining space, a balance of soft grass, pavers or other hardscape will be necessary. Certain areas will need to be hard enough for chairs and other furniture, particularly for those who are including an outdoor dining table in the design.

Create some privacy

Some homeowners are lucky enough to have natural barriers that offer privacy in their entertaining spaces. When there isn’t enough, tall shrubs, inexpensive bamboo fencing or trellis can provide a blind that makes an outdoor living area more cozy and private. Consider placing tall, potted plants on rolling casters to improve privacy as the need arises.

Outdoor living spaces are all the rage, and they can add value and functionality to most any home.

Combatting Loneliness in Older Adults

FAMILY FEATURES

The bonds found in friendships and other relationships are an important factor in health and wellness – even science says so.

According to the American Psychological Association, forming and maintaining social connections at any age is one of the most reliable predictors of a healthy, happy and long life. Studies show having strong and supportive friendships can fend off depression and anxiety, lower blood pressure and heart rates in stressful situations and change the way people perceive daunting tasks.

However, statistics show approximately half of U.S. adults lack companionship and feel socially disconnected, according to the U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community. In fact, 12% don’t have anyone they consider a close friend, per the Survey Center on American Life. This “epidemic of loneliness,” as coined by U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy, can take a severe toll on mental and physical health.

As people age, the risks of isolation increase. With America’s older population growing rapidly – the 65 and older population reached more than 55 million in 2020 – discussing how older adults can combat loneliness is relevant to public health and individual wellbeing.

Consider volunteering, which is one of the best and most rewarding ways to combat loneliness.

Volunteering Combats Loneliness

People often volunteer to find a sense of purpose, learn new skills, improve their

communities or establish new routines after retiring or becoming empty nesters. For many, making friends through volunteer work is a welcome bonus. The act of volunteering provides proven benefits for older adults.

Forming connections can make all the difference in a person’s volunteer experience and sense of wellbeing. People who meet through volunteer work inherently share a

Meet Friends Who Connected Through Service

Ray Maestas felt unfulfilled post-retirement and began volunteering with the AmeriCorps Seniors Senior Companion Program. He was connected with Bob Finnerty, a man with blindness looking for assistance a few days each week. They quickly struck up a routine of errands, reading and conversation that’s since become a friendship they both cherish.

“The Senior Companion Program has provided an avenue to enrich the lives of not only the participants but the people who are volunteering,” Maestas said. “Bob and I have gotten to the point where he’s a very important part of my life.”

Finnerty echoed those sentiments and shared his own appreciation for Maestas’ friendship.

“I’ve always relished my independence and I feel Ray is not just a person who reads for me – he’s a friend,” Finnerty said.

In the last few years, Maestas moved and now serves with a different chapter of the Senior Companion Program. He and Finnerty keep in touch. Maestas said they talk about every third day.

common interest and something to bond over. These friendships can carry over outside of volunteer work and lead to bonding over other hobbies and interests.

Connection-Focused Volunteer Opportunities

In addition to making friends with fellow volunteers, many older adults also form

relationships with the people they’re serving, especially if those recipients are their peers.

For example, AmeriCorps Seniors is the national service and volunteerism program in the federal agency of AmeriCorps that connects adults aged 55 and up to local service opportunities that match their interests. Its Senior Companion Program pairs volunteers with other older adults or those with disabilities who need companionship or assistance. Volunteers may help with tasks such as paying bills, shopping or getting companions to appointments. In some cases, volunteers may also provide support and respite for family members caring for loved ones with chronic illnesses.

“We often think of volunteering as ‘giving back,’ but we’ve seen firsthand that it often becomes so much more than that,” said Atalaya Sergi, director of AmeriCorps Seniors. “By spending a few hours each week with another older adult in need of support, our volunteers are not only giving back to others, but they’re adding meaning to their own lives and establishing new connections. They’re helping to fight the loneliness epidemic one visit at a time.”

Growing older can come with challenges, but some of those can be minimized with a positive mindset and commitment to remaining connected and engaged – whether with friends, relatives or fellow community members. Fostering relationships is a key ingredient to a healthier and more fulfilling life.

Reasons

You Should See a Hand Doctor

Many people come into my clinic and say things like, “I almost didn’t come in for this” or “I’m not sure if this is a big deal” or “I just mentioned this to my primary care doctor, and they said I should come see you.” Most of these people end up feeling glad they came in for an appointment about their hand or wrist problem.

With different types of aches and pains throughout your body, it can feel difficult to sort out which problems need to be seen by a hand doctor. When it comes to the hand and wrist, here is a list that can guide you in deciding when it is time to schedule an appointment with a hand doctor.

1. Pain That Doesn’t Go Away

You are probably aware of your body’s limits. It may be normal for you to feel muscle soreness or joint stiffness after exercise or rigorous work. However, if your hand and wrist pain does not improve with rest, or wakes you up from sleep, you should probably see a hand doctor.

2. Pain Prevents Basic Daily Tasks

If your hand or wrist pain is so bad it prevents you from doing basic activities like brushing your teeth, buttoning a shirt, or cooking a meal, then you should probably see a hand doctor.

Staying Healthy

3. Numbness, Tingling, Weakness

Think about when you hit your “funny bone” or felt your foot fall asleep – if that same feeling of tingling (or “pins and needles”), or if any numbness or weakness becomes frequent or constant in your hand or wrist, you should probably see a hand doctor.

4. Stiffness, Swelling

If your hand or wrist becomes so swollen you cannot make a full fist, wear jewelry, or you can see an indent on the skin of the back of your hand, then you should probably see a hand doctor.

5. Getting Worse

It is probably easy to remember a time when you experienced a minor problem that was mild and/or went away in a day or two. However, in any of the first four categories above, if you feel like something is worsening over weeks or months, you should probably see a hand doctor.

Finding a Hand Doctor

Once you’ve decided to see a hand doctor, ask your primary care doctor for a referral, or call Care New England Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at 401-729-2800.

Whether it is education about your problem, advice on preventing it from getting worse, medications, braces, exercises, therapy, injections, or surgery, a hand doctor can likely help make you feel better.

Patriot’s Day 2024, the 249th Anniversary

or me, Patriot’s Day goes on all year long. I’ve been infatuated with the American Revolution since I was a 7-year-old kid and was in Concord and Lexington for the 200th anniversary.

This year, the “official” start for me was on April 8 just before the eclipse by giving a presentation on our April 19 bullet strike study research for the Lexington Veterans Association. I was “eclipsed” a bit by the eclipse, but we still had a good crowd of around 25 folks. They even stayed awake!

On Saturday the 13th there were activities going on at Minute Man National Historical Park and a group of us did our yearly Patriot’s Day breakfast in Concord to talk about history for a couple of hours before driving to the park to see old friends, walk part of the Battle Road, and watch the reen-

actment. For the first time since I was a kid the material culture amongst the reenactors was on a much higher level than it ever had been, and it was interesting to watch.

Sunday was spent out on the battlefield walking around and a trip to Arlington to walk through the Jason Russell house, scene of some of the heaviest fighting of the day with some folks from London who had come over to see what was going on. It was a lot of fun sharing research with people who wanted to hear it although my wife didn’t seem too interested in listening to me babble.

Monday it was back to Concord for breakfast with history friends and talk, then a walk to the North Bridge to watch the Patriot’s Day ceremony and parade. The weather was perfect, so it was a nice walk up Monument Street. If you haven’t been there, you should go. Concord is a beautiful town with a lot of layers of history.

Having been a member of the town of Concord Public Ceremonies and Celebrations Committee for 5 years, it was nice to not have the stresses of making sure everything goes properly and watch. The ceremony was, as always, moving for me. Then

we watched the parade go down from the North Bridge and into town and retired to the Colonial Inn for a few beers and more conversation. That’s another ritual for me over the years, and even more so after researching all of the supplies that were stored in the central part of the Inn during the Revolution. In April 1775, there had been stores there, but then it was rented until about 1781 and state stores were brought and issued from there for many years. The action in Concord didn’t end once the British retreated back to Boston. It was a hub of

activity for the entire war.

Next year being the 250th anniversary, I’ll be spending a lot more time in Concord, Lexington, and Arlington giving tours and presentations for an upcoming book that will be published by then. Looking forward to it already!

Those who know the community of congregants at The Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux in West Warwick know that they are so much more than Sunday worshipers. They are “doers” of the word, not just believers!

St.Therese, the church’s namesake, was born into a very observant Catholic family in 1873 where she learned the importance of charity from a very early age. This tradition of charity remains an integral part of the teachings and aspirations of the church which bears her name today.

The Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux is an inclusive Catholic community that functions outside the jurisdiction of Rome. St. T’s (as it is affectionately called) is guided by a mission to “make our faith experience relevant by being an inclusive,

ministry-centered community that makes the living Jesus present in our world.” Simply stated, it is to “welcome all.”

Those who attend services here at St. T’s were excited to participate in a recent event, it’s very first Dance Marathon Fundraiser! Organized by parishioner Jeannine Gauvin, the event brought together avid dancers, generous donors and enthusiastic supporters of some very important causes. The fundraiser brought new meaning to the word “fun” with its two primary goals: to raise funds for Project Hands Up, a local organization that provides food assistance to hundreds of families, AND to improve handicap accessibility to the chapel itself.

Help on April 6th, the dance marathon was a complete success! As

Jeannine so eloquently explained, “not only did we raise a significant amount of money but meaningful relationships were formed as members of our Rhode Island communities worked together….When I reached out into my own West Warwick community and neighboring communities, I met many incredible individuals willing to give selflessly of themselves. Without hesitation, they said ‘yes’

and stepped forward to help.”

This is what people can accomplish when they come together with an attitude of charity and caring! This is exactly what St. Therese stands for. No words of gratitude could express it better than those of Coreen St. Jean of Project Hand Up: “Thanks to your assistance, our organization has been able to provide sustenance to thousands of families and the elderly.” To Jeannine

Gauvin specifically, Coreen adds “Your dedication and hard work truly paid off, and your ongoing support is invaluable.”

The dance marathon was a success because of the efforts of many hands and hearts including the event’s tireless dancers, countless volunteers, raffle and silent auction donors, and many local dance academies who leant their time, talents and toes! There was even

an energetic DJ to add to the fun! Many thanks are deserved and sent to all who contributed to the first (but not the last!) dance marathon of The Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux.

The Chapel of St. Therese is located at 1500 Main Street in West Warwick. Services are held every Sunday at 10:30. To learn more, visit them at www.go1500. org.

The following are five gifts that can ensure Mom knows her efforts and unconditional love have not gone unnoticed.

4. Relaxing home spa experience: Many people have turned their bathrooms into home spas, particularly empty nesters who now have more time to relax and pamper themselves. Spending time in a relaxing shower is a way for Mom to clear her mind and unwind, and Shower Steamers from Body Restore can set the ideal environment. Purchase on Amazon and include alongside

additional home spa necessities like loofahs or a bathrobe.

5. Ancestry exploration: Foster greater bonds in the family by giving Mom an opportunity to further trace her heritage. Popular genealogy companies include Ancestry.com, MyHeritage.com and 23andme.com, enabling anyone to enjoy a look back at the lineage that helped shape who they are today. These companies can help trace ancestors and even connect people with distant relatives.

Mother’s Day gifting can revolve around inspirational and heartfelt gifts that show special mothers how much they are appreciated.
