HOLLYWOOD — Austin Butler is taking on his first film project since his Oscar-nominated performance as Elvis Presley in “Elvis.” His current project “City On Fire” will likely be a three-part franchise (if the film hits big), since it’s based on a best-selling book in a trilogy by Don Winslow. The film mixes elements from three Greek tragedies — “The Iliad,” “Odyssey” and “Aeneid” — and translates them to two contemporary criminal empires, one Irish and the other Italian, with a modern-day Helen of Troy plot.

Butler’s got “Dune: Part Two” coming Nov. 3, and then “The Bikeriders” (which had a two-month shoot from October to December).

Even though Harry Styles successfully starred in “Don’t Worry Darling” and “My Policeman” (in which he plays a gay policeman), he’s turned down the chance to play Prince Eric in the upcoming reboot of “The Little Mermaid.”

Styles had left the boyband One Direction to become a huge solo rock star (though his boas are a bit much), but then, he also became a full-fledged movie star.

***

It was bound to happen. The current reprinting of the book “Gone With the Wind” is getting a trigger warning for those who might be affected by descriptions of 19th century slavery in the Deep South. The text won’t be altered in any way, but a warning gives notice of “shocking elements” and the romanticization of slavery in our history. Really? One of the greatest books ever written is a novel! When will this bull end?

***

“Paddington” (2014) grossed $282.8 million, and “Paddington 2” (2017) grossed $228 million. In July, they’ll start shooting the threequel titled “Paddington in Peru” (Peru being the birthplace of the bear). While Hugh Bonneville and Ben Whishaw are returning, in addition to Julie Walters and Peter Capaldi, there’s no mention

of a return from Hugh Grant, who’s currently riding high with “Dungeons & Dragons.”

***

The unstoppable Harrison Ford (who turns 81 on July 13) has two television series — “1923” with Dame Helen Mirren (for Paramount+) and “Shrinking” with Jason Segel (for AppleTV+) — that were both renewed for another season. Plus, he has “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” releasing soon, which also stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas John Rhys-Davies Toby Jones and Mads Mikkelsen. It will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival (out of competition) on May 18.

The Cannes Film Festival will honor Ford at the premiere, but he’ll have to interrupt shooting of “Captain America: New World Order,” which won’t wrap filming until June 30 and is set for a May 3, 2024 release. Ford has more energy than the Energizer Bunny ... he keeps going, and going, and going!

The Reminder is grateful to have on board its busy sales staff team longtime Beacon Communications employee Linda Nadeau. If you are only an occasional reader of the Beacon Communication’s papers, including the Warwick Beacon, Cranston Herald and Johnston SunRise, then you have already seen the meticulous work of this talented and experienced former graphic designer.

As a graphic designer, Linda has designed the display ads for the businesses that advertised in these popular local newspapers. Often taking scribbled notes from the papers’ dedicated sales staff, Linda could take the ideas of these advertisers and turn them into visual ads that would draw

the eye of prospective customers. Linda, a former small business owner herself, knows that an eyecatching ad can make all the difference when getting the word out about a fledgling or even a well-established business. If there is anything Linda knows about, it is how to promote a product or a service.

Linda’s years as the Creative Director and designer for Beacon Communications prepared her for the next stage of her career when she took on the new job title of Account Executive with The Reminder. She now works in the communities of West Warwick, Warwick, East Greenwich, and North Kingstown as one of the paper’s sales representative. Linda actively builds

partnerships with business owners from throughout these towns who want to advertise in the paper. She works closely with them to find the best way to invest their advertising dollars. Those who have worked with Linda love her for her easy-going, friendly, and relaxed manner. Quick to smile and slow to stress, she is the perfect person to interact with the many businesses throughout the region. She is professional, accessible and dependable. She works with advertisers to stretch their dollars and to get the best “bang for their buck.” Linda, who owned and operated an antiques and consignment shop in Warwick many years ago. remembers well the strain of scraping up enough money to advertise. She knew that the adage that says “you need to spend money to make money” was true and that a well-placed ad could give her much needed exposure . . . and customers. Linda brings this same empathy, knowledge, and sensibility to her role at The Reminder. As you are deciding how best to get the word out about your business, your first call should be to Linda Nadeau. Linda will walk you

through every option, from the smallest one column ad to a full-page ad, and everything in between (including this business spotlight page!). Because

she knows so much about both the creative and the technical process, Linda will work hard for you and with you, from that first call to the final “reveal.”

Linda Nadeau can be reached by phone at 401732-3100. or by email at lindan@rhodybeat.com. She is waiting to take your call.

Amphora pottery made in nouveau period is nature-themed decovase brought $6,600 at 2021.

Amphora Pottery

Collectors use the names “Amphora” or “Teplitz” for art pottery made in the Turn-Teplitz region of Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The best known and most elaborate examples are decorated with applied three-dimensional figures in an art nouveau style.

An Amphora piece might look like it has trees growing out of it, an animal’s tail wrapped around the neck or base, or a human figure holding on to the rim or reaching for fruit on a molded branch.

Here, a stylized octopus appears to sit on top of the vase, with two of its tentacles forming side handles and the rest trailing down the vase’s pearshaped body. It sold for $6,600 at Morphy Auctions. Early Amphora pieces (made before World War I) are higher quality, look more interesting and tend to get higher prices.

Q:What is “bone china”? Is it another name for porcelain or something different?

A:Bone china is a type of porcelain. It is made by combining clay and minerals with the ash left from burning animal bones. This makes it stronger, thinner and more durable than hard-paste porcelain. It has to be fired at higher temperatures and is more difficult to make. It was first made in England in the late 1700s, when European ceramicists were trying to replicate Chinese porcelain. Some historians think bone ash was first added to the clay due to a mistranslation of a French description of Chinese porcelain making. Although bone china was made earlier, the words “bone china” started appearing in marks on pieces in 1915. * * *

TIP: To cover a scratch in wooden furniture, mix a paste of instant coffee and water and rub it into the scratch. Another quick fix is to color the scratch with the proper color crayon.

Patient With Risk of Breast Cancer Questions Safety of Yearly MRI

DEAR DR. ROACH: Due to a slight genetic risk of breast cancer (my Tyrer-Cuzick Model score was 20.6%), my doctor wants me to get breast MRIs with contrast annually. I am concerned about long-term exposure to the gadolinium-based contrast dye. I’ve learned that this heavy metal is considered safe, but traces of it can be stored in the brain and other body tissues.

I am 49 and in very good health. I also get mammograms annually. I consulted my doctor about spacing out my MRIs every two to three years, but he said I should have an MRI every year. So I could be getting these MRIs for the next 35 or so years. Do the benefits of contrast dye outweigh the harm in a person with my health profile? — S.A.

ANSWER: I’m afraid I don’t have a good answer for you. It is true that most authorities recommend an intensive breast cancer surveillance program for women at a high risk of breast cancer, in the range of a 20% to 25% lifetime risk. (The average risk for developing breast cancer for a woman born today is estimated to be about 13%.)

The Tyrer-Cuzick model of estimating breast cancer risk tends to give higher estimates than the other commonly used models, such as the BRCAPRO. Other models may not put you over the threshold for intensive screening with MRIs, which is usually combined with mammograms. The question about gadolinium (the chemical element used in the contrast dye for MRIs) is important because some people do store gadolinium in various tissues, including the brain, but the clinical significance of this is unknown. (People with kidney disease can develop a skin disease due to gad-

olinium, so they aren’t recommended to have MRIs with gadolinium.)

Although gadolinium can stay in the body for months or years, there has been no evidence of harm from gadolinium in brain tissue, despite these agents having been used for many years. Some agents have less retention than others. The U.S. FDA has mandated patient guides for these contrast agents, which relay the information above.

Given that there is a probable benefit to intensive screening for breast cancer in your case due to your high genetic risk, and no more than a theoretical risk from gadolinium, I believe that the benefits outweigh the risks, but I can’t say that with complete certainty.

DEAR DR. ROACH: A friend gave me a hemp product to try on the quite painful arthritis in my fingers, which affects my ability to enjoy golf. I was reluctant to try it, but for the last two weeks, I’ve used it topically on my fingers and have been pleasantly surprised by a significant reduction in pain and an improvement in flexibility. One of your recent columns mentions Voltaren, which I have also used, but without as much relief. Can you comment on CBD as an alternative treatment for arthritis?

— P.H.A.

ANSWER: There are animal studies suggesting benefit from oral cannabidiol, a component of cannabis (hemp) that has no psychoactive component (it’s the THC in cannabis that gets people “high”). I found some small studies showing pain relief from topical CBD in people with neuropathy, but not for arthritis. Several people, like you, have written to me with reports of pain relief.

Topical CBD is probably very safe. Even oral CBD should be safe, but studies have found that many products labeled CBD have trace, or more than trace, amounts of THC, enough to make a urine test positive for cannabis. Until there is some evidence of effectiveness, I can’t recommend it, but people can try it based on safety and anecdotal reports.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu.

Maternal Health—Post-Baby Care

Having a baby is a monumental moment in someone’s life, but sometimes it may feel that the focus is on the pregnancy or baby, not on the person growing and delivering the baby!

Why is that the case? One reason is that, historically, insurance companies covered pregnancy-related care at a single visit 6 weeks postpartum. Another reason is that, to provide evidence-based perinatal care, up to 15 prenatal visits and only one postpartum visit are recommended.

Fortunately, things are changing. In many states including Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, pregnancy-related federal health insurance (Medicaid) now extends to one year postpartum, giving access to free, preventive care visits with primary care providers for a year after their baby is born. In addition, prenatal care providers are re-centering our care around the realization that the postpartum period can be the most difficult time of the pregnancy/birth experience for many of our patients.

How are we doing this locally? Women & Infants has designed programs that make things easier for our postpartum patients. For example, all patients who have high blood pressure can now participate in a new program that allows them to take their postpartum blood pressure from the comfort of their own home, instead of bringing their two-day-old babies to their prenatal care provider’s office to get their blood pressure done in the clinic. In addition, for over a year, we have offered patients with gestational diabetes the ability to receive their recommended follow-up diabetes screening on the postpartum unit (without impeding their meal delivery) instead of coming to the laboratory fasting six weeks after their baby is born. Lastly, Women and Infants have the Warm Line, a free program for everyone who delivered with us—call 1-800-711-7011 for advice about your infant, breastfeeding, or postpartum issues, and a trained, professional nurse will answer your questions. We also are scheduling more postpartum visits for many of our patients—while some have the traditional single visit, others have three or more visits. Changes, like we are making at Women &

Staying Healthy

Infants, are extremely important. So many things can happen in the first year after delivery—about 1 in 6 people are diagnosed with postpartum depression or postpartum anxiety, and about the same proportion of people diagnosed with high blood pressure or diabetes during pregnancy will still have these conditions a year after their babies are born. Learning about how common these complications can be and what resources your prenatal care or primary care provider has to support you may be just what you need to thrive after your baby was born.

This Mother’s Day, take the opportunity to think about the last time you went to your primary care provider’s office to receive preventive screening. If you have not been recently, make an appointment! Anyone who has an infant younger than one year can make use of this visit—which is usually free!—to make sure they are up to date with their preventive care. If you had diabetes or high blood pressure during pregnancy—even if this pregnancy was 20 years ago—please see a primary care providers every few years to be screened for diabetes and high blood pressure.

If you are one of the many people having a hard time after your baby is born, know you are not alone. Call the Warm Line for help or speak to your healthcare provider to help determine what support you need. And regardless of whether you find the postpartum period easy or challenging, take advantage of your health insurance to see a primary care provider!

DID YOU KNOW

The right time to exercise is a different time of day for everyone. But there is good reason to consider moving your workout to the morning. The health experts at Healthline say that morning workouts are less vulnerable to distractions as phone calls and texts will typically take place later in the day. Piedmont Medical group says there are mental health benefits of exercise, including the secretion of neurotransmitters that promote mental clarity and improve attention span. Working out first thing in the morning can help you focus and take charge at work or in school soon after.

Since exercise can boost metabolism, it starts the day out on a good foot, and may help you make healthier decisions throughout the day, including choosing more nutritious foods. Healthline also says that cortisol is a hormone that keeps you awake and alert. Cortisol increases in the morning, peaking around 8 a.m. Working out around this time may make workouts more efficient and effective. TF227074

Last month you may remember a story hit the news about an individual who stole a large group of antique arms from museums and historical societies during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He had taken at least fifty pieces from a variety of sites spanning from New England to Alabama!

Four years ago, I was contacted by a police officer in Pennsylvania about a musket he wanted to know more about. He had found me through the Museum of the American Revolution (MoAR) in Philadelphia, and they told the officer to contact me. The gun was marked “J:BARRETT” and was assembled by a Concord, Massachusetts maker I was researching. I almost freaked out when I saw the musket as there was only one other known in existence. I wrote up all the information I knew on the gun and sent it to the officer. They said the gun had been stolen and was a part of an investigation, but nothing else. A year later, I drove down to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania and studied it more closely. I hoped to write an article about the musket but had to wait until the case

Guns with the FBI

was closed.

Fast forward to this past February. I received a call from the police to say the case was over, and that they discovered the thief had stolen fifty antique arms over the years! He invited me to come to the Museum of the American Revolution for a repatriation ceremony, where all the stolen goods would be returned to their rightful owners. I quickly said “Yes!” and decided to drive down to Philadelphia. I was also asked if I would give a few short words about the musket.

The FBI Art Crime Team had also been involved with the investigation, and they ran the ceremony. I arrived at a room packed with police, FBI, district attorneys, press, museum curators, and MoAR staff. All the stolen objects were laid out on tables so you could walk around and see all the guns, powder horns, and other items of historical military significance. I was obviously quite excited about the gun I was talking about, but there were some other

very cool objects too. These included a Colt Model 1847 Walker revolver with Texas markings (which had been stolen from the Connecticut State Library and is a super rare gun), and a Model 1842 pistol made by Springfield Armory (to be sent to the contractors when they were producing the pistol, and very few were ever produced).

Each museum was asked to speak, and I got up to say a few words about the Barrett gun and how excited I was for it to be found and help us understand the arms that were being assembled in 1775. After the ceremony, I had a wonderful tour around the museum and looked at some cool things in their collections storage before heading to a local pub for a few celebratory beers with friends.

For me, it was really cool to be a very small part of this and to be able to study this wonderful historic musket from the start of the American Revolution!
