Antique Advertising

Collectors of antique advertising look for vivid colors and eye-catching graphics. And who would have brighter colors than a dye company? Today, few people buy fabric dyes outside of craft projects, but most families wore homemade clothes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Clothing was made to last, and items were often repaired or remade multiple times before they were retired. People would buy dyes for home use to make their clothing or give a new look to old clothes.

Diamond Dyes, a leading dye company around 1900, is known for its advertising. Their trade cards, advertising booklets and store cabinets are especially popular with collectors today. This cabinet with a colorful tin lithographed scene of children playing outdoors sold for $750 by Morford’s Antique Advertising. Watch out for reproductions!

A:Westnofa manufactured furniture that exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian design. The style became popular because of its simplicity and functional design, like the ability to stack the chairs. Your chair was designed by Oivind Iversen and is called the “City Chair.” Mid-century furniture is in demand by decorators and collectors. Chairs like yours have recently sold for $50 to $100 each. However, your friend is correct: If you have a set of six to eight, they can sell for upwards of $200 each.

Army Blue Artillery Officers Coatee

During the 1830s-1850s the United States Army arguably had the most visually beautiful uniforms before they became more conservative in the 1860s. They were not made at all for comfort, and the dress uniforms even more so. An example of this is the 18321851-era artillery dress coatee worn by Lieutenant Julius Adolphus De Lagnel.

Julius De Lagnel had quite an interesting military history. He was born on July 24, 1827, in Newark, New Jersey. His father of the same name had been an army ordnance officer who died in 1841. Julius, along with his brother Johnston, moved to Alexandria, Virginia at some point after the passing of their father. In 1847, Julius was commissioned into the United States Army as a second lieutenant in the regular artillery without having attended any military schools or West Point. On January 29, 1849, he was promoted to first lieutenant and was in Captain Luther’s Company of the 2nd U.S. Artillery serving faithfully until the outbreak of the Civil War.

On May 17, 1861, Julius resigned his commission in the U.S. Army and joined the Confederate service as a captain of regular artillery. During the Battle of Rich Mountain on July 11, 1861, he manned an artillery piece when he was wounded and soon captured. Imprisoned in New York for a time, he was exchanged for Union General James Ricketts on December 13, 1861.

In 1862, he was given a promotion to brigadier general but turned it down for unknown reasons. He then served as a major in the 20th Virginia Artillery Battalion along with his brother until he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and assigned as second in command of the Confederate Ordnance Service under Brigadier General Josiah Gorgas, inspecting Confederate arsenals, a position which he held until the end of the war. He was paroled in Greensborough, North Carolina on April 26, 1865.

After the war, he worked for the Pacific Steamship Service and in 1903 he sold his mansion on Prince Street in Alexandria to be used as a home for veterans. The United Daughters of the Confederacy own it today and run it as a museum. Julius died on June 3, 1912, at the age of 84. His coatee was passed down by a descendant until it was donated to a museum in 1945

along with his brother Johnston’s Confederate officer’s uniform.

As mentioned above, the coatee is stunning. It’s made from indigo blue superfine broadcloth with scarlet broadcloth piping around the collar and cuff flaps and lined in the skirts with the same scarlet cloth with the upper body lined in red, glazed serge, and a strip of red Morocco around the waist. The cuffs and collar have two rows of gold metallic lace, and the pocket flaps are also piped with scarlet and have four gold metallic loops each. The tails of the skirts are long with embroidered bombs on the false turnbacks. The buttons are all eagle “A” with gilt wash and are in excellent condition.

It must have been quite a sight to see a company all decked out in their dress uniforms during that pre-war period, and this rare survivor is a wonderful view into the martial uniforms of our past.

This educational program offers something extra special which weaves together the history and culture of Indigenous peoples through the art of storytelling. Coventry Public Library Presents: A Revolution of Her Own!ô on June 29 at 5:30PM. In this presentation, Judith Kalaora is Deborah Sampson, the first woman to enlist, fight, and be honorably discharged from the American Military. Experience Deborah Sampson’s arduous upbringing, one and a half years of active combat, and success as the first female professional soldier through interactive stories and authentic colonial attire. • When Core Design animator Toby Gard wanted to make an interactive movie starring a male character looking for treasure in Egyptian pyramids, the character was deemed too similar to Indiana Jones, so the character was switched to a South American woman named Laura Cruz. Then Core wanted a more U.K.-friendly name, so employees went to the phone book for a new surname. We now know her as Lara Croft.

• In Mexico, the first slice of your birthday cake must be given to the person you love most.

• Florida mom Geraldine Gimblet spent her entire life savings on medical treatment for her daughter’s breast cancer … then won $2 million in the lottery just days after making the final payment.

• Japanese warriors wore their hair in a small ponytail after shaving the front of their heads, but not to make a fashion statement. Instead, it helped to keep their helmets secure.

• To protect the giraffe’s brain from sudden changes in blood pressure when it drinks, the animal’s jugular veins have elastic walls and large one-way valves that allow the veins to significantly expand, preventing blood from flowing back to the brain when the giraffe’s head is lowered.

• It is illegal to gamble in a library in the U.K.

• The Battle of the Oranges is an annual festival held in Ivrea, Italy, in which participants pelt each other with the citrus fruit to commemorate the town’s liberation from a cruel medieval ruler.

• It took the writers of the Oxford English Dictionary five years just to reach the word “ant.” This was partly due to the level of detail necessary to trace word origins as well as their evolution.

Answers

1. Their “Paranoid” album, released in 1970. It was their live version on the “Reunion” album in 2000 that netted them a Grammy for Best Metal Performance.

2. “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” The song, which a few others had declined to record and which was generally disliked by those in the film, went on to become a massive hit.

3. Milli Vanilli, in 1988. It was discovered the following year that the duo was lip-syncing every song when the behind-the-scenes recording got stuck and started repeating a line during a live performance.

4. She was born Judith but in 1978 legally changed it to Juice.

5. “She’s Leaving Home,” by the Beatles, in 1967. The story, about a girl leaving home and not telling her parents, was taken loosely from a news story about a teen girl in London.
