FLASHBACK #12345_20230814
FOR RELEASE AUG. 14, 2023
By Mick Harper
1. Name the movie that included “Secret Surfin’ Spot” and “Swingin’ and Surfin’” in the musical lineup.
2. Who wrote the melody behind “Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh”?
3. What do The Great Society, Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship and Starship have in common?
4. Who wrote and released “Peppermint Twist”?
5. Name the song that contains these lyrics: “When she mentioned how her aunt bit off the spoon, She completely done me in.”
Answers
1. “Beach Party,” in 1963, starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. There were seven beach films over the years.
2. Allan Sherman’s 1963 parody about a boy writing a letter home from camp was put to the music of Ponchielli’s “Dance of the Hours,” written in 1876. Several other works have also borrowed from that music, including Disney cartoons.
3. Grace Slick sang lead in all the groups.
4. Joey Dee and the Starliters in 1961. The early ’60s saw dozens of “twist” songs, but this one topped the charts.
5. “On the Street Where You Live,” by Jeremy Brett in the 1964 film “My Fair Lady,” based on George Bernard Shaw’s 1913 stage play “Pygmalion.” Jeremy Brett’s song was actually dubbed by Bill Shirley, as Brett couldn’t sing. © 2023 King Features Syndicate

Often in life, simple words can say it all. This is certainly the case with the beautifully articulated words found on the website of the Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux. “Since 2000, we have wholeheartedly welcomed all Rhode Islanders as well as people from our surrounding states and anywhere else to join us in song, service, worship, and prayer at the Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux. Come and be a part of this thriving and hopefilledcongregation.” No invitation could be more welcoming.
But sometimes, it isn’t words that change people’s hearts, or behaviors, or opinions. It is the feelings they get when they follow where those words take them ~ in this case, right to the embracing arms of this inclusive Catholic faith community in West Warwick.
The feeling of acceptance. The feeling of forgiveness. The feeling of unity. The feeling of grace, and mercy. The feeling of hope.
Also, the feeling of love which is at the core of all Christianity. Love of God; love for one another – no matter what path in life we have undertaken. This “call to love” is one that resonates within the sacred halls of the Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux. It is seen in the church’s philosophy of inclusion and acceptance. It has always been a part of the teachings and actions of this close-knit community.
The Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux is a Catholic Community that functions outside the jurisdiction of Rome. The church is a haven for those whose abiding faith in the teachings of Jesus Christ have not always been in alignment with the expectations of the church of their childhoods, leaving
them feeling estranged, conflicted, and often unwanted.
Congregants who attend services at “Saint T’s” (as it is affectionately known) will see some things; they see families of all shapes & sizes, they see women in the clergy, they see divorcees participating in all the rituals
and blessings their married and single friends enjoy, they hear contemporary music, they see those who extend kindness and love to them. What they won’t see is discrimination, exclusion, judgment, and intolerance.
Father Chuck Vohs, the congregation’s priest, would say to those who feel left on the fringes of their faith ~
come, you are a child of God and you are welcome here. Come to be replenished, edified, supported, and uplifted.
The Chapel of St. Therese of Lisieux stands as a beacon of hope in West Warwick. All are welcome here.
For more details, check the church website at www. go1500.org.
Please come to “Saint T’s”, located at 1500 Main Street in West Warwick. Services are every Sunday at 10:30, either in person or via Zoom. Sunday rosaries begin at 9:45am. Feel free to call 401-680-9076 or email stocc1500@gmail. com for more information.

The exterior components of a home, such as the siding and the roof, help to protect its occupants from the elements. While many roofi ng materials can last for decades, at some point in time homeowners will likely have to repair or replace the roof on their home.
Roof wear and tear may not always be so evident, particularly because most homeowners do not make it a point to get on their roofs very often. The fi rst sign of roof damage typically is a leak that is noticeable from the indoors. It may include a browned spot on the ceiling or even pooling water in the attic. Leak from storm damage or something minor like a water intrusion through a nail hole or from a lost shingle typically can be repaired easily enough. However, additional indicators may necessitate a complete roof overhaul. Here are some signs a roof is in need of repairs or replacement.
• Sagging roof: If the roof is sagging, it could be due to excess loads, such as water-damaged shingles or even weakened roof structure. A professional will need to restore the integrity of the roof.
• Cracking and buckling: It is likely that shingles will have to be replaced if there is cracking or if shingles are buckling and warping.
• Exposed nails: Exposed nails may rust and contribute to a leaky roof, says Family Handyman. How long the nails were exposed could indicate if the roof can be repaired or if everything should be redone.
• Lost granules: Asphalt roofi ng shingles have small granules on the surface. Over time these granules will slowly degrade and fall off. If there are many granules in gutters or if one can see that portions of the shingles are bare, it is likely time for a new roof.
• Visible light: Homeowners who can see light streams coming into the home need roof repair. This is indicative of holes, cracks or spaces in the roof.
• Growth on the roof: Mold and mildew on the roof is a sign that the roof needs to be repaired or replaced. Such growths contribute to rot that jeopardizes the integrity of the roof.
A durable roof protects a home from the elements. Various symptoms signal that it is time to repair or replace a roof.

Norman Mills Price: Golden Age Illustrator
By Joel Bohy Historic
Arms & Militaria Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers Cranston, RI
A generous and humble man, a superb draftsman much admired for his skill as an artist and illustrator, known for his meticulously researched historical paintings and drawings, Norman Mills Price was among those who worked during what is known as the Golden Age of Illustration.
Norman Mills Price was born in the small town of Brampton, Ontario, Canada in 1877. Although an aspiring concert pianist, Norman enrolled in the Ontario School of Art. By 1902, having abandoned his musical plans, he decided to further his art education in Europe. Along with three fellow art students, Norman traveled to London. After studying briefly at the Goldsmith Institute, and the Westminster School of Art, the four young artists opened Carlton Studios, and waded into the art business. In 1909, Norman moved on to Paris and studied at the Academie Julian under Jean Paul Laurens. Along the way, Norman met and married an English woman named Nita E.J. Anson. Together they had a son, Donald.
In 1911, the Price family moved to New York where Norman opened a branch of Carlton Studios on 23rd Street. Af-
ter a year, Norman Price left Carlton Studios and began illustrating for many publications including Liberty, Harper’s, Cosmopolitan, Argosy, Collier’s, and Women’s Home Companion. Among his many advertising clients were The Metropolitan Insurance Co., Sherwin Williams Paint, Victrola, and Coca Cola.
Mr. Price, however, was known mainly for his book illustrations, in which he worked in color and pen and ink. A stickler for detail, he would immerse himself in the research for his subjects. Leaving no stone unturned, he would read voraciously, and study historic artifacts, clothing, uniforms, and weapons. It was said of Mr. Price that his talents exceeded his fame, possibly due to the amount of time that he spent sequestered in his research. The results are spectacular.
Mr. Price would illustrate many classic novels including
those of Robert Louis Stevenson, Alexandre Dumas, Rebecca West, and William Shakespeare. Other subjects of interest were the lives of Meriwether Lewis, Paul Revere, Leif Erikson, and Will Rogers. The illustrations that he is most fondly remembered for, however, are the novels of Robert W. Chambers, namely The Rogue’s Moon, and The Rake and the Hussy. Robert Chambers said of Price’s illustrations: “I am at a loss for words to describe my admiration for Norman Price’s work. Drawing, composition, and character are unusually fine. I am most grateful to Mr. Price for putting the vital spark into my stuff.”
In 1947, the paintings of Norman Price, Harvey Dunn, Frederic Gruger, and Wallace Morgan were featured in an exhibition titled “The Big Four” which was heralded with much acclaim.
Throughout his career, Norman Price was very involved with the Society of Illustrators and served for a time as an honorary president. Following his death in 1951 a memorial exhibition of his work was held at the Society of Illustrators in New York, after which the society library was named in his honor.

I-95 WEEKEND LANE CLOSURES AT ROUTE 10 IN CRANSTON AUGUST 25 – SEPTEMBER 18
RIDOT will close lanes on I-95 at the Wellington Avenue Bridge, at the Cranston/Providence line, just north of Route 10. The closures will take place on four consecutive weekends, Friday, Aug. 25 through Monday, Sept. 18. Travelers should expect delays and seek alternate routes such as Route 10 and I-295
Each weekend, lanes will be closed on both sides of the highway as RIDOT demolishes and replaces different parts of this structurally deficient bridge. The closures start each weekend at 8 p.m. on Fridays with all lanes open by 5 a.m. on Mondays. We’ll keep at least two lanes open on the side of the bridge we’re working on each weekend.
Also, for the week of August 28 there will be a lane split on I-95 South, and for the week of September 11, there will be a lane split on I-95 North. All lanes go through. This rapid approach to bridge replacement saves motorists more than two years of lane closures, shifts and splits. For more details, please visit www.ridot.net
