SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE REMINDER
DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter smokes. She doesn’t have COPD now, but last spring she had bronchitis and was off work for a week. When she went back to work, she didn’t feel good, and her doctor told her that she had pneumonia in both lungs and wondered why she went back to work. She still takes cough syrup under her doctor’s orders. — N.P. ANSWER: Getting someone to quit smoking is a challenge, but perhaps some advice I can give your daughter might help. The first piece of advice is that a cough necessitating cough syrup on a routine basis indeed might be a sign of COPD. There are two major forms of COPD: emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The definition of “chronic bronchitis” is a productive cough for three months in each of two successive years. The second piece of advice is that quitting before there are serious symptoms is the best time to quit. Although the body has some ability to recover from the effects of chronic cigarette smoke, there is a degree of permanent damage in long-term smokers. Quitting greatly slows down the rate of ongoing damage to the lungs and reduces the risk of having lifelong symptoms of shortness of breath and cough. Quitting smoking will do more good than any cough syrup can. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Does taking Norvasc or any calcium channel blocker reduce or destroy the calcium in the bones, eventually causing osteoporosis? — E.G.

ANSWER: No. Calcium channel blockers, like amlodipine (Norvasc), work on cells in the heart and blood vessels, controlling the flow of calcium into the cell. Calcium in the cell is one of the regulators of smooth muscle cells, and for Norvasc in particular, that means its major effect is on blood vessels, causing them to open up and reduce blood pressure, and thus the amount of work the heart needs to do. Calcium in bone is used structurally, where it combines with other ions to form hydroxyapatite, the mineral that keeps bones hard and strong. The mechanism for calcium entry into bone cells is very different. Calcium channel blockers do not affect mineralization of the bone, nor do they increase the risk for osteoporosis. One group found that people on calcium channel blockers may have a slightly higher risk of fractures; however, that was thought to be due to an increased number of falls, especially in the elderly. Physicians need to take care not to use too much medication, especially ones that dilate blood vessels, as they can increase risk of dizziness and falls. *** DR. ROACH WRITES: Many readers kindly shared their recommendations about preventing underarm odor, and the most commonly mentioned, by far, was crystal mineral salt deodorants, of which there are several brands. Several people made their own deodorants by mixing baking powder, cornstarch and olive or coconut oil. Other people noted using antibacterial soaps or cleansing products containing the same products we use in the operating room, such as chlorhexidine and hexachlorophene. A product with zinc oxide and talc helped one reader. Finally, more than a few people noted that removing all underarm hair was necessary to successfully get rid of odor.

According to Zola, a free suite of wedding tools, summer has been upstaged by autumn as the most popular time of the year to tie the knot. For the first time, this year 40 percent of all weddings will take place during the months of September and October. Additionally, the site identified October 20, October 13 and September 29, each a Saturday, as the most popular wedding dates, respectively, of 2018.

Here’s the fun: 1. Lay a leaf on a smooth, clean work surface. Place paper over it and hold it down firmly so that it won’t move. 2. Take a crayon and rub it over the paper until the shape of the entire leaf is revealed. Discover the outline and skeleton of the leaf as the veins of the leaf protrude. 3. If you use a colored pencil, hold it at a slight angle, being careful not to press too hard so that it doesn’t go through the paper.

ST. FRANCIS EPISCOPAL CHURCH TURKEY SUPPER St. Francis Episcopal Church, 132 Peckham Lane, Coventry, will hold their Annual All-You-Can-Eat Turkey Supper on October 26 at 6PM. $12/Adult, $6/child, children 5 years & under are guests of the Church. Please call Cindy for reservations, 397-4337. 4. Make several different rubbings on one sheet. Vary with contrasting colors, if you wish. You might want to identify leaves by writing the name of their tree by each one. 5. Frame the rubbings, or use for book covers, gift wrap, gift tags and notecards. TIP: Rub leaves from your flower and vegetable garden, too. When the design of a small begonia leaf is revealed, your young child might say in amazement: “It looks like a seashell!” Parsley can look dainty and romantic, but what about arugula and kale? *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. What should I do with my pears when I get them home? If the pears are ripe, they can be used right away or refrigerated to slow further ripening. If they need to be ripened, you must leave them at room temperature. Some people put them in a paper bag to help them ripen faster. Be sure to check them daily so they don’t get overripe.
Q: A: A Love Affair With Pears I adore eating a perfectly ripened Bosc or Anjou pear. That first bite through that firm, greenish-golden skin into the sweet juicy fruit is a delight for the senses. Best of all, pears are a good source of fiber, antioxidants and vitamin C. Pears seldom cause allergies and are usually safe for infants and small children. Research suggests that regularly eating pears and other fruits may even guard against macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss. If you’re wondering about selecting, ripening or preparing pears, here’s some great information from USA Pears:
Q: A:
Where are USA Pears grown?
USA Pears are mostly grown in Oregon and Washington, which produce 88% of the nation’s fresh pear crop. The pears I find in the grocery store are hard and green. Why? Pears are a unique fruit in that they ripen best off the tree. As such, pears are transported when they’re fully mature, but not always ripe. This assures that pears you buy are in good condition to properly ripen at home after you buy them. How can I keep cut pears from browning? Browning, or oxidation, is a natural process that occurs when cut pears are exposed to oxygen. It can be slowed by “acidulating” the cut surfaces with a mild solution of 50% water and 50% lemon juice, which can either be brushed on or dipped in. Although this won’t completely stop the browning, it will provide you with a little extra time to enjoy your delicious fruit. You also can use nat-

How long will pears keep in the fridge? Once they are ripened, pears will generally keep in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days. Unripe fruit can generally be kept for a week or more, however, pears will not ripen properly inside the fridge. You also can arrange them in a fruit bowl and place them on the kitchen counter, dining room table or even in the living room so you can enjoy their beauty as they ripen. This recipe for Roasted Pears with Camembert Cheese and Chutney showcases this lovely fruit in a delicious new way.
ROASTED PEARS WITH CAMEMBERT CHEESE AND CHUTNEY Apple Cider, Raisin and Pecan Chutney 1/2 cup unsweetened pear or apple cider 1/4 cup honey or agave syrup 1 large shallot, minced 1/3 cup golden raisins 3/4 cup chopped roasted pecans 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1 teaspoon minced fresh rosemary
2½
teaspoons kosher salt, divided use 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/8 teaspoon allspice or ground cloves 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes Roasted Pears 3 large, ripe USA Pears, such as Concorde, Comice, or Green or Red Anjou 2 tablespoons olive oil 6 slices Camembert cheese 4 cups baby arugula leaves For the Chutney: Bring the cider, honey or agave syrup, shallot and raisins to a boil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until the mixture thickens, 10 to 15 minutes. Off the heat, stir in the pecans, vinegar, rosemary, 1 teaspoon of the salt, 1/2 teaspoon of the black pepper, the allspice or ground cloves, and the cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes. Cool the chutney to room temperature before serving, or place in a container and cover with an air-tight lid and refrigerate up to 1 week. To Roast the Pears: Heat oven to 375 F. Halve and core the pears and place in a baking dish. Rub them with 1 tablespoon of olive oil to lightly coat, and sprinkle all over with 1 teaspoon of salt. Position the pears cut sides down and roast about 30 minutes. Turn them over and continue roasting until tender, 5 to 10 minutes more. Lay a slice of Camembert on top of each and continue roasting just to melt the cheese, about 2 minutes. To Serve: Toss the arugula with the remaining tablespoon of olive oil, and the remaining salt and ground black pepper, and divide among 6 salad plates. Place a warm pear half over each and top with a spoonful of the chutney. Serve immediately. From $700-$1,075 Homeowners must consider a variety of factors when putting their homes on the market. One of the more important things to remember is the benefits of making a strong first impression on prospective buyers. That’s why many homeowners rely on staging when selling their homes. Staging requires more than just clearing out clutter or baking a batch of cookies to create a welcoming aroma. Staging helps potential buyers visualize the potential of a home and see themselves owning and living in the property. While homeowners can effectively stage their own homes, sometimes it is well worth the investment to call in a professional designer or stager. Stagers often work their magic on vacant properties or those that have been sitting on the market awhile. A stager conducts careful research into the market of a particular area and learns about the neighborhood before deciding how to appeal to likely buyers. For example, when staging a coastal home, a stager may go with nautical themes and create the impression of a relaxing and laid-back property for entertaining by the beach. Certain rules should be followed when staging a home. Furniture, decor and other amenities in the home should not detract from the house itself. Instead, such items should complement the architecture and feel of the space. Here are some additional staging suggestions.
• Remove personal effects. Homeowners are urged to replace personal photographs with neutral artwork and remove other decorative items that reflect their personalities. As an example, an avid outdoorsman probably will want to remove hunting trophies. The goal is to help buyers see themselves in the home, and that can be difficult if existing residents’ personal effects are everywhere. • Put away nonessential items. Staging helps homeowners create dream spaces. Coffeemakers, backpacks hanging on the wall and dishes in the drainboard may be part of daily living, but they can make it hard for buyers to see a home’s potential. Store such items before holding an open house. • Maximize lighting. Whenever possible, take down or open window treatments to display architectural moldings and let in as much natural light as possible. • Opt for neutral colors and furnishings. Use neutral taupe and gray paint to keep homes prime for buyers. Homeowners who have more eclectic or colorful tastes can put their items in storage and rent neutral furnishings until the home sells. Staging can improve the chances that a house sells quickly. Staging helps potential buyers see themselves in the space without distractions from the previous owners’ decorating or belongings

During the late 18th century, the very rich made a long trip to Europe to admire the architecture and art of Europe, including the ruins of past civilizations. The town of Pompeii was a major attraction. It had been covered
New Orleans for $500. It is 10 inches high and almost 6 inches in diameter. *** I have heard that some antiques and vintage items are dangerous to own. Is this true? I am afraid to use my orange Fiesta dishes because friends say they were made with uranium and are radioactive. Yes, some antique medicines, cosmetics and other objects can be dangerous or even fatal. Most vintage or antique things you buy at shops or shows have been cleaned or checked for dangerous things. Some are mercury (barometers), flammable materials (stove polish that explodes when heated), arsenic (cleanser for complexion), opium (medicine to relieve pain), morphine (to sooth teething babies), alcohol (a high percentage in bitters, medicines, etc.) and, of course, anything in a bumpy poison bottle or a bottle labeled poison. Uranium was used in the clay or glaze of some items before the strict food and drug laws were passed in the U.S., but some countries still use glazes that are not safe. Your orange dishes are safe to use. If you find forgotten drugstore stock, clean it carefully in a well-ventilated area. Empty all medicine bottles; children may try to drink something. *** CURRENT PRICES Rocker, shaker, shawl, woven tape seat, mushroom caps, No. 7, 40 x 31 x 26 inches, $105. with ash and lava in 78 A.D. and forgotten until 1748, when it blocked some construction. Historians have been studying the remains, and the art and culture, since then. The city was a summer home for wealthy Romans, and the eruption covered and saved the furnishings under the rock. Information about furniture and paintings inspired copies in the 18th century. A brazier that was used to heat a Roman bath in the city and a similar one in a brothel were copied and sold in the late 1800s. The popular bronze brazier had a pieced rim and a threepart foot with men with paw feet holding the fire pit on their heads. These copies were made with a green patina. Various chores are synonymous with certain times of year. For example, cleaning a pool is a summertime task. In addition, rare is the instance that Mother Nature forces anyone to break out the snow shovels outside of winter. Raking leaves has long been a task for fall afternoons, but homeowners may be surprised to learn that they might be better off putting their rakes in permanent mothballs. In the 1990s, turfgrass specialists at Michigan State University began exploring the potential benefits of leaving mulched leaves on a lawn instead of raking them and leaving them for curbside pickup. While the researchers noticed an obvious leaf residue on the lawn after mulching, they noted that it only sticks around for a few days. Eventually, the tiny pieces sifted down into the lawn, ultimately serving to control future weed growth while also providing the lawn with essential nutrients. Over time, researchers noted that homeowners who mulched rather than raked their leaves needed less fertilizer to give their lawns a green look in spring, saving homeowners the effort and cost associated with fertilizing. Researchers also noted that decomposing pieces of leaves cover up bare spots between turf plants, which have traditionally proven to be excellent spots for weed seeds to germinate. In fact, MSU notes that homeowners can expect a nearly 100 percent decrease in dandelions and crabgrass after mulching leaves for just three years. Depending on the type of mower being used, up to six inches of leaves can be mulched at a time. Push mowers can handle smaller amounts, though can still be as effective as ride-on mowers. Fall may be synonymous with raking leaves. However, homeowners who want to give their lawns a healthy boost should consider putting their rakes away and mulching their leaves this fall.

What Is America’s Oldest Cemetery? Many images are symbolic of Halloween. Witches riding broomsticks and ghosts gallivanting about haunted mansions are two such images. Cemeteries also play a prominent role in setting the Halloween scene. Halloween fans and history buffs may wonder where the oldest cemetery in the United States happens to be. That distinction belongs to the Myles Standish Burial Ground. Located on a residential street in Duxbury, Massachusetts, the Myles Standish Burial Ground is actually the nation’s oldest maintained cemetery, a designation bestowed upon it by the American Cemetery Association in 1976. The cemetery is named after Myles Standish, the military leader of the Plymouth Colony. In fact, many voyagers from the Mayflower are buried in this ground, which began serving as a cemetery in 1638. Standish, who died in 1656, is among

those laid to rest here. Exhumations in the late nineteenth century confirmed the site was home to Standish’s remains, and a memorial to him that’s still standing today was subsequently built over his gravesite. While it became a historic burial ground, the site was actually first used as Duxbury’s premier meeting house. Its use as cemetery lasted from 1638 to 1789. In fact, many of the burial markers were obscured for much of the nineteenth century. But an economic downturn sparked by the town’s loss of its shipbuilding industry led the town to rediscover its history. As a result, the Myles Standish Burial Ground became a focal point of efforts to attract tourists interested in colonial history. The ground continues to attract tourists today and is a must-see for Halloween and history enthusiasts alike.

Did You Know?
It’s easy to underestimate the level of know-how required to be an automotive mechanic, and just how essential the job is. There are an estimated 30,000 parts on the average car, and data from the International Organization of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers indicates around 74,705,000 cars were produced in 2018. Auto mechanics are in high demand. Although many high schools offer adequate training to prepare individuals for a job in automotive mechanics, most mechanics are now expected to have completed an associate degree or certificate program in automotive training to keep up with ever-evolving vehicle technology. Students can enroll in a vocational education program, receive a certificate and then go on to employee training. Upon completion of that training, students can become master mechanics. Training and schooling typically takes two years. Salary.com reports that the average automotive mechanic salary in the United States was $38,551 as of December 2018.

Technology has changed many things about the way people live their lives, including how they buy their cars. Whereas trips to the dealership were once inevitable for drivers in the market for new vehicles, the internet is now littered with websites enabling users to buy new cars with the click of a mouse. But buying cars online, and often sight unseen, can be a risky proposition, and there are many reasons why buying new cars in person can benefit buyers. • More than meets the eye: One of the more widely promoted websites that “sells” cars is TrueCar.com. Television ads for TrueCar® are ubiquitous, but viewers might not realize that TrueCar.com is essentially a network of auto dealerships in which member dealerships pay to obtain buyers’ contact information. That’s important information to know for buyers who want to buy a car online so they can cut out the “middleman” (i.e., dealerships). • No surprises: Some online auto dealers promise delivery of the car. That can seem especially convenient, but it’s always in buyers’ best interest to test drive cars before buying them. That’s not always possible when buying vehicles online. While buyers may be able to return cars purchased online after they have been delivered, that can be inconvenient, negating what many feel is the single biggest benefit to buying a car online. When
buying cars they have already driven in person, buyers won’t be surprised when getting behind the wheel. • Savings: Online dealerships may market themselves as more buyerfriendly than traditional dealerships, but such claims should be taken with a grain of salt. Many can only afford to purchase new vehicles if they get a good deal on an existing trade-in. By visiting dealerships in person, buyers can negotiate a higher trade-in value than they might be able to get online. In addition, when shopping for new cars, many buyers return to the same dealership where they purchased previous automobiles. An existing relationship with a dealer might make buyers eligible for discounts they’re unlikely to earn when buying cars online. • Convenience: Online auto dealerships often cite convenience as one of the biggest feathers in their caps. But it can be more convenient, and considerably less timeconsuming, for buyers to simply walk into a dealership and ask to test drive various vehicles. Buyers who visit dealerships can test drive various vehicles in a single morning or afternoon, while those who stick to buying online may have to drive far and wide to drive more than one car in a single day. The tradition of buying cars in person can still pay dividends for buyers accustomed to buying things online.

(NAPSA)—Cooler weather can mean more days spent indoors and signal the need to spruce up your home for seasonal get-togethers. When getting ready for the cozy days ahead, don’t forget to clean your home’s air duct system. Air ducts and ventilation systems can become clogged with dust, pet hair and other contaminants, making them a breeding ground for mold and bacteria. When firing up the furnace this winter, you may notice a burning smell coming from your air ducts. This is an indication of dust buildup in your home’s ventilation system.
When getting your home ready for seasonal gatherings, don’t forget to clean out your HVAC vents. They collect dust. An easy way to tell if your system should be cleaned is to remove the vent with a screwdriver. If you see a collection of dust or mold, consider calling a professional heating and cooling system cleaning contractor. Quick And Simple Ways To Make A Front Door Pop Visitors’ impressions of a home are often dictated by the home’s entryway. Must as one may judge a book by its cover, the same can be said about the impression that a front door and entryway can create, regardless of how accurate that impression is. Making certain changes to an entryway can go a long way toward improving curb appeal. Entryways also can set the scene for a home’s interior. Whether one chooses to be classic or bold, modern or traditional, there are various ways to quickly transform a home’s entryway. • Bold front door color: Color can dramatically enhance an entryway. Painting an existing door or replacing it with a more vivid option can do the trick. The DIY Network says certain colors stand out as favorites. These include turquoise, yellow, red, indigo, orange, and black. The door color should complement the other shades of the home, such as those on siding and trim. • Custom walkway: Guide guests right to the front door with an attractive (and safe) walkway. Stamped concrete or decorative paver blocks may fit the bill. This walkway can extend to the street or to the driveway. • Contain plants. Landscaping around the entryway should be neat and well-tended. Overgrown plants or shrubbery may give off an air of neglect. Container plants and carefully curated shrubs can create a neat and inviting aura. • Highlight the address. Make sure the home can be found easily

These can include colorful tiles, ornate planters, decorative wooden doors, or elaborate knobs and lighting fixtures. • Add architectural details. Find out which architectural elements will meld with the style of the home and then incorporate them. Moldings, columns, shutters, and trim are areas to consider. How Tree Services Can Protect Your Property Cold weather can take its toll on a property, especially in regions of the world where winters are harsh. Most parts of the landscape are vulnerable to damage from winter storms, but trees may be especially susceptible. By the end of winter, many homeowners wonder if their trees would benefit from some professional TLC. Tree services provide a host of services. While fall is a popular time to remove trees from a property, doing so in spring is not unheard of, especially if trees were affected by winter storms and now pose a threat to a home and the people who live inside it. Homeowners considering tree services can explore the following ways that some professional arbor attention can protect them and their homes. • Tree services can help protect a home’s foundation. Old trees that stretch well into the sky can be captivating, but they also can pose a threat to a home’s foundation. Such trees may have especially large root zones that may extend beneath walkways and even a home. In the latter instance, foundations may crack as roots try to stake their claim to the ground beneath a home. According to the home improvement resource HomeAdvisor, homeowners pay an average of just over $4,000 to repair foundation issues, though major problems can cost considerably more than that. A professional tree service can remove aging trees that might be beautiful and awe-inspiring but still pose a threat to a home and the areas surrounding it. • Tree services can improve visibility. Trees that have aged a bit since their last trimming might affect the view of a property from inside a home. Overgrown branches can compromise residents’ ability to see and experience the natural beauty just outside their windows. The average homeowner may be able to trim short trees on his or her own, but if views from the second floor of a home or higher have been compromised, it’s much safer to

call a professional tree service. Such services have the right tools and experienced personnel necessary to safely trim high branches on tall trees. • Tree services can help prevent future damage. Even if trees made it through a recent winter unscathed, that’s no guarantee next winter or even the coming seasons of spring, summer and fall won’t ultimately prove their undoing. Travelers Insurance notes that weatherrelated roof damage, including damage resulting from falling limbs and branches weighed down by snow during the winter months, accounted for more than half of all Travelers property loss claims between 2009 and 2016. According to BNC Insurance and Risk Advisors, homeowners may be liable if a tree they knew posed a threat falls onto a passerby or a neighbor’s property and causes damage or injury. Having all trees properly trimmed each year, but especially those that can fall on your home and your neighbors’ homes, may prevent future damage and legal issues. Tree services can ensure trees maintain their awe-inspiring beauty and help homeowners protect their homes and their belongings.

Paint & Color Selection Three easy-to-use and easy-to-mix paints are: • Black Dog Salvage Furniture Paint is a water-based, low-VOC, matte finish paint for indoor use that requires only cleanup before painting, except in the case of chips and scratches, and adheres to wood, metal, glass, ceramics, and plastic. • General Finishes Milk Paints are premixed water-based acrylic paints suitable for a variety of interior or exterior applications from furniture to crafts. • General Finishes Gel Stains are heavy-bodied gels formulated to flow evenly for consistent color control. Before you pick up a paint brush, consider which colors are best for the area you plan to refresh. Choices will need to complement wall color and colors of other pieces or accents in a room. Two handy color guides are the 36-page General Finishes Milk Paint Fan Deck and the Black Dog Salvage Furniture Paint Color Recipes (available for download as a free PDF on Woodcraft.com). For more than just a change of color, consider creating decorative effects, such as distressing, antiquing, faux marble, or rag rolling. Choose General Finishes Pearl Effects to make it easier to create specialty finishes. Repair If furniture, cabinets and other surfaces need repair prior to painting, the Mohawk PermaFill Wood Touch-Up and Repair System is an easy answer. Just pop in a color cartridge (six color families available), power on the battery-operated dispenser, aim, fill and level this durable repair. Briwax ChaiRX is perfect to fix loose parts in chairs. Drill a small hole, inject ChaiRX, and in 12 hours the thin unique formulation will penetrate the wood cells and permanently swell the joints and bond them together. Visit https:// youtu.be/iWMu6OKyOUE to watch a video that demonstrates these products. For more extensive repairs, use the Kreg Jig R3 Kit to reinforce weak parts with pocket holes and avoid complete disassembly of your project. Clean and Prep Use Krud Kutter TSP Substitute to remove dirt, grease, smoke, mildew, food stains, crayon, wax, and more from surfaces to be painted so paint will adhere better. For sanding chores associated with painting, consider the Porter-Cable Restorer Handheld Drum Sander with attachments, which is designed to remove paint and finish from wood, brick and fiberglass, as well as remove rust and polish metal. The Porter-Cable 382 5" Random Orbital Sander and the Norton 5" Random Orbital Sander are other good choices. For sanding with hand power, the Preppin’ Weapon Sanding Block Kit and Norton 41⁄2" x 51⁄2" SoftTouch Sanding Sponges are handy helpers. Application & Topcoat If spraying is your preference, HOMERIGHT Finish Max Fine Finish and HOMERIGHT Super Finish Max HVLP Sprayers are easy to use on everything from furniture to fences with oil- and water-based products such as chalk-style paint, latex paint, milk paint, enamels, primers, polyurethanes, stains, and varnishes. Large and Small Spray Shelters make painting furniture easier. For painting by hand, Black Dog Salvage Furniture Paint Round Brushes, made from both natural and synthetic bristles, and Redtree Matey Synthetic Bristle Brushes work well. Give paint extra protection with Black Dog Salvage Guard Dog and Show Dog Topcoats and General Finishes Gel and High Performance Polyurethane Topcoats. To learn more about these and other products, visit your local Woodcraft store, call (800) 535-4482 or visit www.Woodcraft.com.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For-profit recycling program could hurt local nonprofits
Cranston, RI – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rhode Island (BBBSRI) uses their fleet of iconic trucks to collect the community’s donations of bagged clothing and boxed household items to fund their local youth mentoring programs. The free and convenient curbside pick-up can be accessed by visiting DonateRI.org or by calling 401.921.2434 and speaking to a representative at BBBSRI’s locally staffed Donation Center Headquarters in Cranston. Along with 6 trucks offering free curbside pick-up, BBBSRI also maintains over 100 clothing donation bins and 4 drop off centers, which provide a lifeblood to the agency and over 30 other local non-profits. These include local schools, churches, veteran's organizations, and 8 YMCAs throughout the state. According to BBBSRI Executive Director, Katje Afonseca, BBBS has been operating their donation center since 1997 when then, Executive Director, Bonny Sevelin embarked on a contract with Savers to provide consistent, sustainable funding for their local youth mentoring programs in return for the collection of gently used clothing and small household items. Each year, BBBSRI diverts between 6.5 and 8.4 million pounds of clothing and household items from Rhode Island landfills. Through this process, BBBS creates a funding stream for its mentoring programs, which have supported thousands of youth in Rhode Island. “We have offered free home pickups to Rhode Island residents for more than 20 years.” said Afonseca. “It is surprising to see for-profit companies both in our state and from out of state who are just beginning to offer home picks ups state that this is a new service to Rhode Islanders.” BBBSRI has begun to see a slight decline in donations and wonders if this is due to for-profit and out of state, curbside pickup services that have thrown their hat into the ring of “textile recycling”. The BBBSRI Donation Center understands that customer service, and ease of use, is a top priority in the cloth collection business. That’s why BBBSRI not only offers free home pickups, but has more than 100 clothing collection bins throughout the state as well 4 drop off centers. BBBSRI was named Best ‘Nonprofit’ Place to Work in 2019 by Providence Business News. “Not only do we offer a convenient way to donate used clothing and household items, we value the 50+ employees who work at BBBSRI and know that by making this a great place to work, our drivers, attendants and all team members will provide top notch service to our customers.” According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, more than 84 percent of old clothes, shoes, belts, handbags and textile items end up in a landfill or an incinerator. On average, that adds up to about 85 pounds of textile items per person each year. As a result, textiles make up more than 6 percent of all the residential and municipal trash in the country. BBBSRI shares profits from its donation bins with other nonprofits, said Afonseca. There are a number of other bins from for-profit organizations around, and no one is saying those companies shouldn’t also be allowed to collect items, she said, but it’s important to be on equal footing. BBBSRI partners with Savers, selling items to the secondhand store and using the money to cover the overhead of running the nonprofit. That means direct monetary donations go directly to the organization’s work of providing mentors to the youth of Rhode Island. Weather is often the first indicator that the seasons are changing. For many people across the globe, the hot days of summer will soon be giving way to the more crisp days of fall. For those who live in regions where summer only subtly gives way to fall or is seemingly gone before the end of August, the 2019 autumnal equinox occurs on September 23. That marks the official beginning of fall, also known as autumn. In fact, that the season the follows summer seemingly goes by two different names is just one of many interesting facts about fall. • A season by any other name … Fall is the term most often used to reference the season succeeding summer in the United States. But the season is referred to as “autumn” in other parts of the world, including Great Britain. Fall was once even known as “harvest” because of the harvest moon, which appears close to the autumnal equinox. • The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes
place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear. • Squirrels have a (sophisticated) plan out there. Squirrels hiding food in autumn for the upcoming winter is a familiar sight. And squirrels are more organized than many people may know. Groundbreaking research released in 1991 found that, even when squirrels bury that stash of nuts closely to one another, they will each return to the precise location of their personal cache. Recent research also has shown that squirrels bury their stash based on certain traits, such as the type of nut being buried. • Babies born in fall are more likely to see the century mark. Researchers at the University of Chicago studied more than 1,500 centenarians born in the United States between 1880 and 1895. They then compared birth and death information with those centenarians’ siblings and spouses so they could compare their early environment and genetic background and their adult environment. Their research found that most centenarians were born between September and November.

By Samantha Weaver • It was noted 20th-century author of speculative fiction Harlan Ellison — whose writing credits include episodes of the original “Star Trek” series — who made the following sage observation: “The two most common elements in the universe are hydrogen and stupidity.” • After his death in 2005, the ashes of Hunter S. Thompson — pioneer of “gonzo” journalism and author of the infamous novel “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” — were fired spaceward from a giant cannon to the accompaniment of fireworks and the Bob Dylan song “Mr. Tambourine Man.” • Wasps, evidently, don’t have any time to waste. Those who study such things say that they take less than a minute to complete their courtship and mating rituals. • All species of dog have a pink tongue — except one. Chows’ tongues are black. • The automatic dishwasher was invented way back in 1886. A woman named Josephine Cochrane came up with the idea because she was unhappy with the way her fine china was being chipped by the servants who were washing it. • According to a recent Zinus study on sleep anxiety in America, women are more likely than men to dream about being chased and having teeth fall out. Men, though, dream more often about being naked in public and flying. • If you’re thinking of redecorating your child’s room, you might want to keep this in mind: Studies show that the color pink has a soothing effect on children, blue lowers their blood pressure and increases attentiveness, and yellow excites and cheers kids. Avoid red if at all possible; it has been shown to raise children’s blood pressure, respiration and heart rate as well as brain and muscle activity. *** Thought for the Day: “Unfortunately, computers are also stupid. Unlike human beings, computers possess the truly profound stupidity of the inanimate.” — Bruce Sterling © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Entertainment ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An upcoming trip could create some problems with your schedule unless you tie up as many loose ends as possible before you head out the door. Ask a friend or colleague to help you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Being eager to start a new project is fine. However, moving ahead without knowing what actually will be expected of you could cause a problem down the line. Ask some questions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Getting through some recent challenges in good shape might give you a false sense of security. Don’t relax your guard. You need to be prepared for what else could happen. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Caution is still advised, even though you think you’re as prepared as you need to be. Keep in mind that change is in your aspect, and you should expect the unexpected. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Lion’s gift of persuasion helps you get your points across, even to some of your most negative naysayers. An old friend might seek you out for some advice. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Being sure of your convictions is fine. But leave some room for dissenting opinions. You might learn something that could help you avoid a possible problem later on.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Getting good legal advice on what your rights actually are is the first step toward resolving that pesky problem so that it doesn’t re-emerge at a later date. Good luck. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Longtime relationships work well this week, whether they’re personal or professional. It’s a good time to invite new friends and colleagues into your life. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good week to do the research that will help you uncover those irrefutable facts that can back you up on your new venture when you most need it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Change is an important factor in your aspect this week and could affect something you might have thought was immune to any sort of adjustment or “alteration.” AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Being asked to share someone’s deeply personal confidence might be flattering, but accepting could be unwise. Decline gracefully but firmly. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) As wise as you are, you could still be misled by someone who seems to be sincere but might not be. Take more time to assess the situation before making any commitments. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to face challenges that others might try to avoid, and by so doing, you set an example of courage for all.

Q:
I usually don’t watch “American Horror Story.” It’s way too dark and gory for me, but I have to admit I’m intrigued by the ad campaign for the new season. It looks like the horror movies I watched in the ‘80s, like “Friday the 13th” and “Halloween.” — C.P. The ninth season of “American Horror Story” just premiered on the FX channel and is titled “AHS: 1984.” It is indeed set in the ‘80s and takes place at a summer camp. The trailer showed a masked, knife-wielding slasher hitching a ride on the undercarriage of a truck carrying teens on their way to camp. I’m pretty sure you can figure out what happens next. This installment features “AHS” regulars Emma Roberts, Leslie Grossman, and Billie Lourd, but the most surprising bit of casting is Olympic silver medalist-turned-actor Gus Kenworthy. This is his sixth acting role since competing in the Winter Games in 2018. *** I heard that Chris March from “Project Runway” died. I lost interest in the show after a few seasons, but he was one of my favorite designers to compete. Did he achieve any success as a designer after the reality series ended? — J.F. You might not have heard, but Chris March suffered a terrible fall in 2017 and wasn’t discovered for several days. He had sustained a head injury, was put into a medically induced coma and awoke to find he was paralyzed in several limbs. His death this year at the age of 56 was the result of a heart attack. Before such a tragic ending, March found success as a designer. While he didn’t win his season of “Project Runway,” he went on to design for several big stars like Beyonce and Chrissy Teigen. He even designed the gown that Meryl Streep wore to the Oscars in 2010. He will be greatly missed. *** Is it true they’re making another “Dark Shadows” movie? Will Johnny Depp be in it again? — G.M.

Emma Roberts in “American Horror Story”
A:
“Dark Shadows” was a daytime TV soap opera with a gothic theme that aired 50 years ago and starred Jonathan Frid as a vampire named Barnabas Collins. A primetime version aired in 1991 starring Ben Cross in the same role, and then a motion picture version starring Depp was in theaters in 2012. While there are no plans for a sequel to the film, the CW network recently announced that a TV series is in the works titled “Dark Shadows: Reincarnation.” Mark B. Perry (“Revenge”) is writing the pilot. According to Deadline.com, Perry used to race home from school each day to watch the original “Dark Shadows.” He’s also a huge “Star Trek” fan and plans to treat “Dark Shadows: Reincarnation” with “the same reverence given to ‘Star Trek,’ while making the show accessible for audiences who aren’t familiar with the macabre world of the Collinses.” Send me your questions at NewCelebrityExtra@gmail.com, or c/o KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.
