pumpkin (field or sugar), about 2 cups 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 tablespoons salt, plus more for sprinkling Cooking oil spray 1. Cut a fresh, ripe pumpkin in half. Remove the membrane and seeds, and as much pulp as possible. Separate out seeds (leaving some of the pulp on adds to the flavor). 2. Do not rinse the seeds, as they will steam instead of toasting. Pick through the seeds and remove any that are split. Do not place the seeds on a paper towel, as seeds will stick to the paper. Instead, place seeds on a sheet of waxed or parchment paper, or on lightly oiled aluminum foil. Heat oven to 300 F.

3. For Spicy Pumpkin Seeds, mix 1/2 teaspoon each of garlic powder, onion powder, salt, cumin, sugar and coriander and 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper with the seeds before toasting. 4. For Sweet Pumpkin Seeds, mix 3 tablespoons of dark brown sugar and 1/4 teaspoon of salt with the seeds before toasting. 5. Spread the vegetable oil on a shallow pan. Sprinkle seeds over oil in single layer. Bake 10 minutes, stir and spray with the cooking oil spray. Bake for another 10 to 15 minutes, stir and spray with the cooking oil spray. Bake for an additional 10 to 15 minutes as needed or until lightly browned, being careful not to burn them. 6. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with salt. The seeds will become crisper as they cool. Shell the seeds, or for more fiber, eat them whole. oil and lemon juice to the mixture makes a wonderful salad dressing. Pumpkin seeds are also a delicious addition to oatmeal-raisin cookies or granola recipes. Pumpkins seeds are a power-packed addition to sauces, soups and salads, and they’re a healthy snack. Roasting and adding spices enhances their flavor. This recipe provides a few suggestions for preparing pumpkin seeds.

Pumpkins are one of the highpoints of the fall harvest. The fruit originated in Central America. Pumpkins — like cantaloupes, cucumbers and squash — belong to the Cucurbitaceae, or gourd family. Most of the pumpkins that are grown in the United States come from Illinois and become available in October. Whole pumpkins and the carved pumpkin shell are often used as decorative items. The interior pulp is a nutritious addition to savory and sweet dishes, but don’t throw out the seeds! Pumpkin seeds make a tasty snack that’s low in calories, high in protein and rich in fiber, as well as vitamins B, E and K, and zinc, iron and magnesium. Pumpkin seeds also contain many beneficial fatty acids and amino acids. The flat, dark-green pumpkin seeds, or pepitas as they are often called, are covered with a yellow-white husk. Pepitas are a key ingredient in Mexican recipes and are often used in the cuisines of many other cultures. Toasted pumpkin seeds add a nutritious crunch when used as a topping for sauteed vegetables or salads. Grinding pumpkin seeds with garlic, parsley or cilantro and adding olive

Remember who ran for president and vice president against Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush in 1984? Sitting around our dinner table, it took a while for my kids to answer. In fact, they were stumped. (Thank you, Siri and Google.) Answer: Walter Mondale with Geraldine Ferraro. How quickly we forget those who ran the high-profile race for the White House but didn't make it. My friend Dr. David Parkyn, president of North Park University in Chicago, invites guests to peruse a hallway gallery in his home, filled with framed campaign buttons going back a half a century of candidates who won their party's endorsement, but went on to lose the campaign. According to Parkyn, coming in second place for the presidency is quite an accomplishment. "How many people can say in life that they came in second place for the highest office in the land?" he adds. My visit to his captivating bipartisan collection made me realize how important it is to talk to kids about winning and losing. With this election season coming to a close, it's an opportune time to have a conversation about trying and losing, for there will be more people who lose their bids for elected office than win at the ballot box. Understanding that losing isn't the end-all is an important life lesson. Here are five ideas on how to relate with kids about winning, losing and perseverance. 1. Let's start with the world of sports.

King Features Weekly Service

Talk to Kids About Winning and Losing

In major-league baseball, a .300 batting average is an admirable achievement, but it's only three hits out of 10 tries. That means that seven out of 10 times, a skilled batter returns to the dugout failing to hit to get on base. But he's soon back in the batter's box, striving for a hit. 2. Winning matters to kids. Yes — it's more fun to win than to lose. But healthy competition is what needs to be stressed. Being out there, trying with hope for success counts in the long run. Tell kids of the classic defeats of Abraham Lincoln, who lost eight elections for various offices before ultimately winning the presidency.

Do You Have

Dr. David Parkyn stands by his wall of collected presidential campaign buttons of losing candidates. 3. Remind your child that courage does not mean an absence of fear, but rather doing something in spite of fear or discomfort. 4. In our competitive society, home is an important refuge. Whether working or playing together, stress cooperation and fun while downplaying fierce competition. 5. No one wins all the time. Learning to win humbly and lose graciously is an important life skill. Who knows, your child may run for president someday. If your kid wins, he or she is White House-bound. If not, the campaign buttons will enjoy an esteemed place on Parkyn's wall. *** Donna's latest book is "Donna Erickson's Fabulous Funstuff for Families." © 2020 Donna Erickson Distributed by King Features Synd.

It is a typical Saturday morning at Fantastic Sam’s in Coventry and the salon is already bustling with mask-wearing clients. Busy at their own stations are Donna Ruggieri and Liz Klos, two stylists who have returned to Fantastic Sam’s after short hiatus’s. With opposing schedules, these two talented professionals are only seen together at the salon on Saturdays, but when they are together, there is an special energy here. The close-knit team at Fantastic Sam’s is thrilled to welcome both Donna and Liz back to their ranks. Both gals have devoted their careers to making others look and feel their best, and their passion for cutting and coloring hair is evident with each snip of their

scissors. The other stylists at this popular destination feel the buzz that they bring back to the salon, and their presence has given the business a whole new infusion of life. Donna Ruggieri has been a hair stylist for thirty years, though her professional interests extend beyond the salon chair. When she is not fussing over her clients at Fantastic Sam’s, she is lovingly tending to her Hospice Care clients. Her work as a hospice worker has given her a rare compassion and talent for caring for others and meeting their specific needs. Donna’s teammate at the salon, Vicky, is quick to point out that Donna is a gifted conversationalist who can “talk to anyone

for-profit intermediary organizations altogether when donating vehicles. By donating the vehicle directly to a charity that will handle the transaction themselves, donors can ensure 100 percent of the profits go to the charity. Charity Navigator even notes that many charities already have auto donation programs, even if they do not advertise such services. • Protect yourself when donating. Donors may be vulnerable to certain penalties if they don’t formally sign their vehicles over to the nonprofit organization when donating them. Charity Navigator notes that some charities may ask donors to avoid officially signing over the vehicle so they don’t have to re-title it. However, doing so means donors are responsible for any park-

ing tickets issued to the vehicle and may even be liable if the car is used in the commission of a crime. • Complete necessary paperwork. When donating the vehicle, make sure you receive and keep all documentation provided by the charity. The documentation you need and the forms you will have to fill out for your tax returns will depend on the value of the car, so maintain contact with the charity even after donating the vehicle. The organization should be able to help you and advise on which forms will be necessary to claim your deduction. Although antique dealers tell us early 1900s oak furniture doesn’t sell — average Chippendale pieces are not wanted and fancy French designs of the past are out of style — some average examples and even good copies can be useful and a good investment. In 1899, Wallace Nutting started photographing, hand-coloring and selling scenes that had a “Colonial look. He bought and borrowed the furniture and accessories, and sold thousands of the pictures. There were some historic flaws in the pictures, like hooked rugs in front of the fireplace in an early 1700s scene. Eventually, he started to make and sell accurate copies of his furniture. Today, there are collectors of Wallace Nutting furniture as well as the photographs. In the 1920s, Peter Hunt decided to paint early wooden furniture with the colorful peasant designs he developed. It became popular as a style, and today, Peter Hunt furniture sells for more than the type of furniture he repainted. Costume jewelry also was made to look like expensive gold and gem-set originals. Nowadays, the best of signed costume jewelry can sell for thousands of dollars. A Wallace Nutting tavern table made in the early 20th century as a copy of an 18th-century table sold at a Garth’s auction for $469. *** We have the first two albums recorded by the Beatles in excellent condition. What is their value and how would we go about selling them? These albums sell at auctions for over $1,000. Their value depends on rarity and condition. The first Beatles album released in the United States was “Introducing the Beatles, by Vee-Jay Records on Jan. 10, 1964. Capitol Records released its first Beatles album, “Meet The Beatles, on Jan. 20, 1964. It released “The Beatles’ Second Album on April 10, 1964. “Introducing the Beatles was made with three different backs. The backs of the first covers were blank because

the album was rushed into production to get it out before anyone else. Later back covers had ads or titles in columns. Recent prices for the album range from $1,250 to $5,250. The highest price was for a very rare “column backâ€? stereo version of the album in original Sears sleeve. It sold for $52,500. “The Beatles’ Second Albumâ€? sold for $2,000-$5,750. “Meet the Beatlesâ€? sold for $275. *** CURRENT PRICES Doll, Navajo, stuffed cloth, blue velvet blouse, red bottons, striped cotton skirt, beaded necklace, woolen black hair, 1950s, 12 inches, $84. Entertainment I Now Pronounce You LUCY

STONE

Tuesday, November10th • 6:00 pm

In this presentation, History At PlayTM, LLC Founder and Artistic Director Judith Kalaora is Lucy Stone: The first woman from Massachusetts to earn a college degree, a fierce abolitionist, and women’s rights activist. Challenging discrimination is not easy, but Lucy Stone is never one to take the easy road. Even Susan B. Anthony credited Lucy Stone for her involvement in the tumultuous women’s rights movement. The fight for suffrage is ferocious, so come along for the ride! Now, in honor of the 2020 centennial celebration of the 19th Amendment, HAP, LLC brings Lucy Stone’s incredible story direct to the comfort of your home LIVESTREAM on Tuesday, November 10th, 2020 6:00 PM. The LIVESTREAM production of I Now Pronounce You Lucy Stone is approximately 60 minutes, followed by real-time audience Q&A. Suitable for all ages. This one-time-only event is generously SPONSORED BY THE COVENTRY PUBLIC LIBRARY and is free and open to the public. Reservations are required. For more information and to reserve your spot, visit

1-866-595-8110 By Lucie Winborne • In the early 1800s, a railroad marketer set up a head-on collision between two trains as a publicity stunt. Some 40,000 people came to watch, and the resulting boiler explosion killed three spectators. But ticket sales soared, and railways everywhere staged train crashes right up until the Great Depression. • The Zombie tit is a species of bird that has learned to track down tiny bats, split open their skulls, and feed on their brains. • On average, a 4-year-old will ask 400 questions in one day. • One of the weirdest scandals in sports history occurred in 1973 when New York Yankees players Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich decided to trade families — wives, children, even dogs! After the couples became close friends, Peterson fell in love with Kekich’s wife and vice versa. “It’s a love story. It wasn’t anything dirty,” Peterson told a reporter in 2013. Peterson is still married to the former Mrs. Kekich, but Kekich and the former Mrs. Peterson later split up. • Dustin the Turkey, a hand puppet from an Irish TV show, has campaigned for president of Ireland in two separate elections — representing the “Poultry Party.” • Pepper spray and tear gas are technically classified as chemical weapons and thus are forbidden in warfare. • When Prohibition started, alcohol could only be bought for medicinal and religious purposes, from a pharmacy or a doctor. “Medicinal whiskey” was prescribed for just about anything and used to treat conditions such as toothaches and the flu. 1. Name the group that released the album titled “The Royal Scam.” 2. What instrument does Herb Alpert play? 3. What country is Air Supply from? 4. Which Chambers Brothers song was 11 minutes long on the album? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “Looks like it’s over, you knew I couldn’t stay, She’s comin’ home today.” Answers 1. Steely Dan, in 1976. The album cover was originally meant for a Van Morrison album that was never released. Some considered the cover to be hideous, with beasts hovering over a sleeping man. 2. The trumpet. Alpert came from a musical family. He played in his college’s marching band and then in the Army before starting “Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass.” 3. Australia. It’s shocking, but the group has never had a No. 1 single in Australia. They did, however, make it into The Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame in 2013. 4. “Time Has Come Today,” in 1968. 5. “Sad Eyes,” by Robert John in 1979. That was the year disco reigned, but the mellow “Sad Eyes” managed to climb the charts anyway. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Deciding to work out that pesky problem (even though you might have been bored, bored, bored with it) should be paying off right about now. Expect to hear some very welcome news very soon. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Unexpected news might cause you to rethink a previous conclusion. Don’t be bullheaded and try to bluff it out. Make the needed change, and then take a bow for your objectivity. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Money matters should be considered as you continue to work out your holiday plans. This is a good time to scout out discounts before demand for them outstrips their availability. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A calm period early in the week helps you complete most, if not all, of your unfinished tasks. A new project appears by midweek, and this one could carry some big career potential. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Positive results from recent ventures continue to pump up those self-esteem levels, making you Fabulous Felines feel you can tackle any challenge anyone wants to throw at you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Family and friends might feel neglected because of your almost total focus on a project. Try to rework your schedule so you can have time for both your loved ones and your work.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Don’t be surprised if you suddenly hear from someone from your past who wants to contact you about the possibility of renewing a long-dormant (if not dead) relationship. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time to check over what went right and what went wrong with recent efforts. This can provide valuable lessons for projects that will be coming up soon. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Dealing with people who feel they’re always right about everything might be a problem for some. But the savvy Archer should be able to deflate their oversize egos. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This week favors a balance between the demands of your work and your need for fun timeouts. Taking breaks helps restore and keep your energy levels high. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) There could be an occasional setback in what you’re working on. But look at them as lessons on how to do better as you move along. More supporters turn up to cheer you on. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Although a more positive aspect influences this week’s course, you still need to be sure that those who will work with you have no reason to work against you. Good luck. BORN THIS WEEK: You believe in keeping your promises. It’s not always easy to do, but somehow you do it.

Q:

Will there be another season of “You on Netflix? Are they going to turn him into a “Dexter where he just continues his crimes season after season? — V.E. “You, starring Penn Badgley as a stalker named Joe, premiered on the Lifetime network, but wasn’t a big ratings hit. It took off when season one re-aired on Netflix, and Netflix acquired the rights and developed season two, where a new woman named Love (Victoria Pedretti) became Joe’s obsession. I do see the similarity between “Dexter, a Showtime series about a serial killer who outsmarted the law season after season, and Joe. Like Dexter, Joe has settled down with his girlfriend who is expecting a child, but domestic bliss isn’t likely to change his murderous ways. Fans will be thrilled to learn that a third season of “You is in the works. Joining the cast this season will be Shalita Grant, a catty mom who befriends Love, and Travis Van Winkle, an affluent neighbor who, according to E!Online, “invites Joe into his inner circle. *** Whatever happened to Becca and the man she chose on “The Bachelorette? I never heard if they got married. Are they still engaged? — P.C. Becca Kufrin, who was selected to be “The Bachelorette after auto racer Arie Luyendyk Jr. broke her heart by rescinding his proposal on “The Bachelor, is single again. She’s only 30, but after her relationship with her chosen one, Garrett Yrigoyen, fizzled this past summer, she announced that she’s undergoing fertility treatments and freezing her eggs in hopes of having a child someday. Many speculated that she dumped him because of his political opinions on social media, but Kufrin stressed on her podcast, “Bachelor Happy Hour, that there were several factors. “Garrett and I came to this decision [to split] after many conversations. It wasn’t something we just arrived at one night. There’s much more to it. The newest season of the “The Bachelorette, which was filmed under quarantine restrictions, is airing Monday

Holiday shopping online is one of our annual rituals, at least for a portion of the gifts we want to buy, but with COVID making in-person shopping too risky, a much larger percentage of us are likely to shop online. That’s what the scammers and thieves are hoping, anyway. The biggest threat this year is likely to be emails. You’ll often receive an email from the retailer saying your purchase has been shipped, and there might be a link in the email about that delivery. Beware clicking it. It could be a scammer hoping to install malware on your computer to capture any future credit card or account numbers you type in. Or they might ask you outright to type in personal information such as your name and credit card number. Instead of clicking any link in any email supposedly from a retailer, go to the merchant’s website to look for information on your purchase or call them directly. Take the phone number from your bill or their website, not from any email. You might also receive emails about items you didn’t order and worry that your account has been hacked. Again, that is one way for the scammers to get you to click a link. Don’t do it. Call the merchant instead. Just ordering online isn’t the end of your steps to being safe. There are the porch pirates, those awful people who dash up to the house and steal packages right at the door. They often follow delivery trucks to see where the parcels are being left. Keep an eye out for your delivery. Or track it online. A final warning: Merchants often ask you to download their app to make purchases. You don’t have to. You can still make online purchases without adding yet another potentially unsecure form of communication.

As of this writing, a return to production of “The Flash is imminent, but when those episodes will air is the big question. The original plan was for the seventh season to premiere in January, but that’s been pushed back. Other CW series such as “Riverdale and “Batwoman are reportedly in the early stages of production. The shows film in Vancouver, Canada, and according to Deadline.com, there was a big backlog of pending COVID-19 tests contributing to the delay of start-up. Season two of “Batwoman will introduce a new actress in the lead role after the departure of Ruby Rose. Javicia Leslie will take over the part.
