Wood Bulto Fra Andreas Garcia was an 18th-century Mexican Franciscan friar and folk artist who worked in what is now New Mexico. He carved and painted wooden figures of saints, called bulto, that were about 12 to 18 inches high. The figures were used as devotional images as well as artistic objects. A polychromed wood bulto made by Fra Garcia between 1748 and 1778 representing San (Saint) Rafael the Archangel sold at a Cottone auction. An archangel is a messenger of God, higher ranking than an angel. San Rafael is a patron saint of travelers, often depicted holding a staff; the blind; and physicians, from an Old Testament story in which he healed a blind man with fish’s gall. *** I love Coca-Cola advertising. I recently bought a metal Coca-Cola serving tray with a girl in a white bathing suit sitting on a diving board and drinking a Coke. How can I tell if it’s vintage and how much it is worth? Coca-Cola was first served in 1886 in Atlanta, Georgia. John Pemberton, an Atlanta pharmacist, invented Coca-Cola when he combined a mysterious, dark liquid with carbonated water. Coca-Cola advertising pieces have been hot for years, popular with both collectors and businesses with vintage decor. Coke started making serving trays in 1897. Vintage Coca-Cola trays have black backs, while reproductions may have yellow, white or other colored backs. Telltale signs of a reproduction include barcodes and any evidence that the back has been painted black. A real 1939, 13-inch by 10 1/2-inch metal Coca-Cola tray of a girl on a springboard like yours recently sold for $102. *** CURRENT PRICES Doorstop, dog, Scotty, standing, cast iron, center seam, black paint, 8 1/2 x 10 inches, $30. BLESSED VIRGIN
(Never known to fail). O Most Beautiful Flower of Mt. Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the sea, help me and show me here in, you are my mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times.) Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days. You must publish it and it will be granted to you. Grateful Thanks. J.M.

SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE REMINDER
BUSINESSSpotlight WEST GREENWICH GROCERY A little bit of this and a little bit of that
There is an oft-repeated phrase that says, “If walls could talk, what stories they would tell!” If this were true, and walls could talk, they would have so much to say about the new home of West Greenwich Grocery. Today, this welcoming roadside stop on Nooseneck Hill Road is owned by Denise Slater, a native Rhode Islander whose husband is the longtime owner of Slater’s Exeter Auto Repair. Denise purchased the building in 2019 from Jean Johnson, the “J” in “T & J’s Hay & Grain Shop”. But West Greenwich Grocery’s story began long before Denise and a dedicated group of friends and family gave it the extensive makeover it needed to become the modern convenience store it is today. The building had been home to a host of former owners, from the more recent grain store all the way back to the 1950’s when it was a grocery store run by Chuggs Hoxsie who sold groceries and repaired tractors on the property! For a while, it was a gas station run by the Rathbun family ~ why, even Hollywood came calling to use the building in a movie! If the walls of West Greenwich Grocery could talk, what stories they would have to tell of this longstanding landmark in the city! Three years ago, Denise, who is not only a small business owner but also a collector of antiques, a mother of two sons, a grandmother of two-year-old Sophia, a community leader, a caretaker, AND a former car mechanic, was up to the challenge of taking this old building and putting her own mark on it. Armed with a crew
Come to West Greenwich Grocery on Nooseneck Hill Road for everything you could need to make your life more convenient ~ and to support local farmers, artists, and vendors! Open every day from 8am to 7pm. of able-bodied helpers, a new vision of what this space could become and a sensitive eye to its interesting past, Denise got to work. Passersby who travel down Nooseneck Hill Road will hardly recognize West Greenwich Grocery today with its rustic wood exterior, friendly sign on the door, and front porch with comfy benches. The lumber, which was sourced from Kenyon Mill, gives the store the appearance of a log cabin ~ you just can’t resist the temptation to go inside! As soon as you walk inside the grocery, you see shelves lined with every convenience you can imagine, from the usual snack items to take on the road to the basics for any pantry to fresh, local vegetables and lots of frozen
foods. There are household items including toiletries, cleaning products, pet food, cigarettes, and so much more ~ a little bit of this and a little bit of that! Finally, Denise has made an extraordinary effort to support local artists, farmers, beekeepers, and craftsmen. You will find honey, maple syrup, candles ~ and so much more. West Greenwich Grocery is home to everything you need. The store is open seven days a week from 8:00am – 7:00pm and is located at 789 Nooseneck Hill Road. Find them on Instagram, Facebook, Google and Yelp. Questions? Call 401-642-6803.

Fearing antibiotics Many people are concerned about milk, meat and poultry treated with antibiotics. Organic foods are antibiotic-free. The Food and Drug Administration has strict guidelines in place to phase out the use of antibiotics in food animals to enhance growth or improve feed efficiency. They’re also requiring farmers to select strains of microbials that are less medically important to humans who would need them to treat disease. This means
survey by the USDA showed 39 percent of 571 organic samples were found to have pesticide residues, but well below tolerance levels set by the EPA. Therefore, pesticide-free and organic are not exclusive. Organic foods are seen as a healthy alternative to foods that do not fall into this category. While there are many positive reasons to go organic, including convential foods in one’s diet is not necessarily unhealthy.

A realistic guide to organic food In a perfect world, chemicals would not be needed to produce any foods, all of which would be made in sustainable conditions and from all-natural ingredients. But even the most eco-conscious foodie routinely faces difficult decisions at the grocery store. The Organic Trade Association says organic food is the fastest-growing sector of the American food industry, and organic food now accounts for more than 5 percent of total food sales. While many people understand the benefits to consuming organic produce, such foods tend to cost more, compromising shoppers’ budgets as a result. Illuminating the history of lighthouses Lighthouses have long been beacons for vessels on the open water. Lighthouses help warn sailors of dangerous shoals and other obstacles, and also serve as navigational guides to help keep ships and boaters safe. As individuals and families consider taking to the water, they may want to plan visits to some of the nation’s more impressive lighthouses. Learning more about lighthouse history can make these trips even more fun and educational. Historians believe that beach bonfires were the earliest ways people on shore helped guide their sailors at sea. Eventually bonfires were replaced by structures that would ultimately be called lighthouses. The earliest known lighthouse was built in Egypt more than 2,000 years ago, according Project Archaeology. In addition, archaeologists have found remnants of more than 30 lighthouses built by ancient Romans. Boston Light, a lighthouse located on Little Brewster Island in outer Boston Harbor, was the first lighthouse to be built in what is now the United States. The original structure was constructed in 1716, and the current lighthouse dates back to 1783. It is the second oldest working lighthouse in the United States, after the Sandy Hook Lighthouse in New Jersey. The first lighthouse in what was to become Canada, and the second on the entire coast of North America following Boston Light, went into service at the French fortress of Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island in 1734. Louis-
bourg Lighthouse was destroyed by British troops in 1758, but rebuilt in 1842. It also was rebuilt in 1923. Canada also lays claim to the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in North America. The Sambro Island Light in Halifax Harbor predates Sandy Hook Lighthouse by four years. The United States Lighthouse Society says lighthouse lanterns have been illuminated by various means through the years. Original lighthouses were lit by open fires from braziers to candles. Oil lamps, acetylene lamps, oil vapor lamps, and eventually electric incandescent bulbs paved the way for modern lighthouse illumination. One innovation that revolutionized lighthouses was the Fresnel lens, a compact lens made of many prisms originally developed by French physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel. These lightweight lenses provide ideal light-gathering capabilities and magnification. A Fresnel lens can capture more oblique light from a light source, allowing the light from a lighthouse to be visible across greater distances. Even though lighthouses are well-known for being used at night, daymarks make every lighthouse unique and also visible during the day. The daymark is the paint color and pattern on a lighthouse. This pattern also helps sailors know where their vessels are located along the coast. Visiting lighthouses and learning about their rich histories can make for a fun-filled day trip.

Accessing Your 401k Before Age 59 ½ Jeffrey H. Massey Certified Financial Planner™ Massey and Associates, Inc.
What to know before taking money from your retirement account prior to age 59 ½. In this time of great uncertainty for many workers, we have received calls about withdrawing money from IRA accounts or retirement plans while under the age of 59 ½. Let’s start with the “tried and true” advice of having an emergency fund that should equate to at least 3 to 6 months of your living expenses. Establishing an emergency fund of this type should be a top priority for anyone that is still working or relying on that income to pay the bills. Once you have retired, your source(s) of income is not depending on you actively working so, the emergency account may well be a smaller dollar amount. Everyone’s situation can be different so, I recommend that you speak with a financial adviser to help you sort through the various issues pertaining to establishing your emergency account. There are rules pertaining to withdrawing funds from 401k plans or IRA accounts, and of course, they are different. If you leave your employment, whether you are downsized out of a job, fired or quit, it does not matter to the IRS. If you leave that job during, or after the year in which you become age 55 and prior to age 59 1/2, there is a special provision that allows you to withdraw funds from your 401k plan without the 10% early withdrawal penalty. Many people are unaware of this special provision. Keep in mind that is the IRS rule. However, your 401k plan may not allow you to take such withdrawals, so, it is important to start by inquiring with a plan representative as to the availability of this type of withdrawal. A recent client wanted to withdraw under this IRS provision, however, his plan would only allow a one-time withdrawal from the 401k plan. He wanted to withdraw the equivalent of four years of income, which would have put him into a much higher tax bracket. Obviously, not a good idea. So, what is a person to do that is faced with such a dilemma? The easy answer is to transfer the 401k into an IRA that you can control. The important thing to remember is that you cannot just take a withdrawal from an IRA prior to age 59 ½. But, there is another tax rule that allows you to create an income stream from
your IRA account. The IRS code, section 72(t), allows an individual to create an income stream, “no less than annually” from an IRA account and avoid the 10% early withdrawal penalty. The allowable payment is based on your life expectancy. Of course, there are rules that must be followed. (Please remember that converting
an employer plan account to a Roth IRA is a taxable event. Increased taxable income from the Roth IRA conversion may have several consequences including (but not limited to) a need for additional tax withholding or estimated tax payments, the loss of certain tax deductions and credits, and higher taxes on Social Security benefits and higher Medicare premiums. Be sure
to consult with a qualified tax advisor before making any decisions regarding your IRA.) Unlike the 401k rule that allows a penalty free withdrawal after the age of 55, the IRA 72(t) rules does not have an age requirement. The two rules that must be adhered to are, firstly, the payments must be made for a period of 5 years. Secondly, the final payment must be received after the individual becomes age 59 ½. Let’s look at two versions of a 72(t) payout that can avoid the early withdrawal penalty. Let’s say John starts taking his income payment at age 52. His payments must continue until he becomes 59 ½, so, that would require 7 ½ years of payments to qualify under the 72(t) rules. Let’s say that Celeste starts her payments when she is 57. In this case, the payments must continue for 5 years, even though she will be 59 ½ in just 2 ½ years. Here is a note of caution. If you interrupt this type of a 72(t) payment stream in ANY way, or withdraw any additional money from the IRA account, the IRS will retroactively go back in time and charge you the 10% early withdrawal penalty plus interest from the date of each payment up to the time you violated the rules. Obviously, that is not in your best interest. There are special software programs that we use to determine the best payout amounts based on the three methods of calculating these payments: the required minimum distribution (RMD), the annuitization and the amortization method. This is not something you should try on your own! Another key point is to use the absolute minimum that you need to set aside for this type of payment stream and put that money into a separate IRA account. This will allow you to have other money available if you need it without interrupting the 72(t) payment stream and having to pay the penalty and interest charges. I know this is technical, so, if you have questions, we are here to help! For more information, contact the team at Massey And Associates, Inc., Retirement Wealth Advisors, at (401) 333-8000 and www.masseyandassociates.com. The office is located at 250F Centerville Road in Warwick. Investment advisory services made available through AE Wealth Management, LLC (AEWM). AEWM and Massey And Associates, Inc. are not affiliated companies. Neither the firm nor its agents or representatives may give tax or legal advice. Individuals should consult with a qualified professional for guidance before making any purchasing decisions. 1409165 – 7/22

HOLLYWOOD — The #MeToo movement is not a trial by judge or jury, but a condemnation in a court of public opinion. The subject of a #MeToo judgment could lose everything, even if they can prove their innocence, because the retraction never catches the front-page headline. Recent case in point is Armie Hammer who, despite such successes as “The Social Network” (2010) and “Call Me by Your Name” (2016), was accused of sexual abuse in an anonymous Instagram post. Even though it was never proven, he was dropped by his agency and cut from co-starring opposite Jennifer Lopez in “Shotgun Wedding” (replaced by Josh Duhamel). Hammer also lost “The Offer” (replaced by Miles Teller) and was dropped from the series “Gaslit” (replaced by Dan Stevens), the film “Billion Dollar Spy” and a Broadway play titled “The Minutes.” His role in “Death on The Nile” — completed before the pandemic shutdown — was impossible to reshoot, but Taika Waititi replaced him with Will Arnett in “Next Goal Wins.” Needless to say, Hammer’s marriage fell apart, and when his wife, Elizabeth Chambers, moved to the Cayman Islands with their two children, he soon followed. However, Armie received no assistance from his famous family (you know, Arm & Hammer), so in order to support his family, he took a job at a Cayman Island resort selling timeshares from a cubby-hole office. As of now, no papers have been filed against him in any court, and no settlements of any kind were made. So much for “innocent until proven guilty!” *** “The Fall Guy” was an ABC series from 1981-86 starring Lee Majors as Colt Seavers, a Hollywood stuntman by day and a bounty hunter by night. In 1981, Milton Bradley created a “Fall

Armie Hammer Guy” board game. A comic strip based on the series appeared in a “Look-in” magazine, and a British video game was developed by Elite Systems in 1984. In 2013, Dwayne Johnson was in talks to star in a film, but it never happened. Now, “The Fall Guy” will be a $100-million film starring Ryan Gosling as Colt Seavers. But here’s the catch ... this American-made series-turned-film about a Hollywood stuntman is going to be shot in Australia! The government in New South Wales is providing $14.5 million, and the Australian Federal Government is ponying up $30 million. Paul Fletcher, member of parliament, expects “The Fall Guy” will inject more than $244 million into the Aussie economy by employing 1,000 Australians who will make up the cast and crew, as well as over 3,000 locals as background extras. With those figures, “The Fall Guy” is a man for all seasons!

Mine weighed between 4 and 6 ounces and cost an average of 75 cents, including the cost of two eggs. Frugal and fabulous! The ready-made kits are refrigerated and thus perishable. So, I made freezable kits, so they last indefinitely. So, let’s make a portions or serves as the base for 20 freezer full of homemade breakfast kits. A 16-ounce bag of peppers and scrambled egg kits. MAKE-AHEAD SCRAMBLED EGG KITS For each kit: 1/4 cup frozen diced potatoes 2 tablespoons frozen 3 pepper and onion blend, chopped 2 tablespoons chopped ham OR cooked sausage OR cooked, crumbled bacon 2 tablespoons shredded cheese Place ingredients into a zip-top plastic bag and freeze until ready for use. Measurements don’t have to be exact. This is a great job for the kiddies. When ready to serve, place the contents of bag into a microwave-safe coffee cup that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Heat on HIGH for one minute. Remove from microwave and stir. Add two eggs and stir well. Heat in microwave in 20 to 30 second increments, stirring each time, until fully cooked, about 2 minutes total time. It’s best to err on the side of slightly undercooked as the carry-over heat will continue to cook the eggs. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Use caution as the eggs and the cup will be hot. One benefit of these breakfast kits is kids can make breakfast themselves with adult supervision. Teach them how to use a timer and hot pads to protect against burning. You’ll be rewarded by knowing if they starve to death in college, it’s on them. *** Lifestyle expert Patti Diamond is the penny-pinching, party-planning, recipe developer and content creator of the website ‘Divas On A Dime — Where Frugal, Meets Fabulous!’ Visit Patti at www.divasonadime.com and join the conversation on Facebook at DivasOnADimeDotCom. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Aspects favor socializing with family and friends, but an irksome workplace situation could intrude. No use grumbling, Lamb. Just do it, and then get back to the fun times. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) There’s still time for you Ferdinands and Fernandas to relax and sniff the roses. But a major work project looms and will soon demand much of your attention through the next week. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your enthusiasm persuades even the toughest doubters to listen to what you’re proposing. But don’t push too hard, or you’ll push them away. Moderate for best results. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your energy levels are rising, and you feel like you can handle anything that the job requires. While that’s great, don’t isolate yourself. Keep your door open to your workplace colleagues for sound advice. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A workplace change could lead to that promotion you’ve been hoping for. But you’ll have to face some tough competition before the Lion can claim his or her share of the goodies. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your rigidity regarding a difficult workplace situation could be the reason your colleagues aren’t rushing to your assistance. Try being more flexible in your demands.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) That uneasy mood could be your Libran inner voice reminding you that while it’s great to be with your new friends, you need to take care not to ignore your old ones. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A sudden spate of criticism could shake the Scorpion’s usually high sense of self-confidence. Best advice: You made a decision you believed in — now defend it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your reluctance to help restart a stalled relationship could be traced to unresolved doubts about your partner’s honesty. Rely on a trusted friend’s advice. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The capricious Sea Goat is torn between duty and diversion. Best advice: Do both. Tend to your everyday chores, and then go out and enjoy your well-earned fun time. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Cutting back on some of your activities for a few days helps to restore your energy levels. You should be feeling ready to tackle your many projects early next week. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A co-worker might secretly be harping on about your work to your mutual colleagues. But some associates will come to your defense, and the situation will ultimately work to your advantage. BORN THIS WEEK: Your ambition makes you a success at whatever you choose to do — especially if it’s in the world of the performing arts. © 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your recent column about the homeowner who was struggling to find out which owner was allowing their dog to poop on their lawn. Your ideas were pretty good, but I have another one that they might consider. I run a small bed and breakfast, and dog poop on the front lawn is a huge concern to me. No guest wants to see that, much less accidentally step in it! I installed cameras and caught a couple of neighbors’ dogs in the act, but the problem continued. Then I noticed something. My landscaper applies a fertilizer and pest control to the lawn in the spring and fall, and he puts up a little sign that warns people not to allow pets or children onto the grass until the application dries. When that sign is up, no neighbors come near my property. I asked the landscaper to leave the sign up year-round. I haven’t had a single “deposit” since! I hope this sneaky idea helps. — Vince in Saratoga, New York DEAR VINCE: That is a genius idea. And while it is a little sneaky, it controls the pet waste problem in a non-confrontational way. Hopefully, no one calls your bluff! Another option is to periodically treat your front lawn with a dogrepelling scent. These products, both sprays and granules, are available at pet and home-improvement stores and online. Spritz the borders of the lawn and plants or spread the granules around on a dry day that isn’t windy. You can even make homemade repellent by mixing one part cayenne pepper with 10 parts water and spraying around the yard. (Do not spritz these repellants directly at a neighbor’s dog!)
