CENTRAL COVENTRY FIRE DISTRICT Seven Years ago the Central Coventry Fire District was in bankruptcy court. This was a result of mismanagement, with millions of Taxpayers dollars being wasted and misappropriated. Through hard work and dedication we have been able to rebuild. Presently CCFD is experiencing significant headwinds. • An Unfunded State Mandate passed by the Democrats on Smith Hill for $300,000 That will directly result in a 10% tax Increase • Union Members Pension costs have soared from $305,752 in 2016 to $680,599 in 2021

The benefits of making New Year’s resolutions The end of December is a busy time of year. Families are shopping for gifts for loved ones and friends, holiday celebrations are in full swing and thoughts begin to turn to the new year ahead. At the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve, it is customary to sip a glass of champagne and toast to the new year. Many people use the dawn of a new year as a time to create a list of resolutions that reflect positive changes they hope to make in the year ahead. Between 40 and 45 percent of American adults make resolutions each year, according to the health and wellness group Proactive Mindfulness. According to John C. Norcross, Marci S. Mrykalo and Matthew D. Blagys, coauthors of the study “Auld Lang Syne: Success predictors, change processes, and self-reported outcomes of New Year’s resolvers and nonresolvers, within six months of starting a resolution 46 percent of people are still maintaining their resolutions. Resolutions may seem silly to some, but there are several positive reasons to

make them. • Resolutions provide practice setting goals. Goal-setting is an important component of life. Goals are key because they provide general direction in life. A goal is a map that can give you an idea of where you are heading and what path you need to take to get there, according to the self-improvement guide Success Consciousness. Resolutions can be fun, low-pressure goals. Think of them as dress rehearsals for bigger life changes. • Resolutions offer time for reflection. Too often people are rushing through daily life without stopping or slowing down to truly assess the impact of their actions. Resolutions help you reflect on the past, present and future, figuring out what has been working and what may need to be changed to provide a boost, according to the wellness resource Alternative Daily. • Resolutions can serve as a catalyst for positive change. When something isn’t working with your routine, personal health or relationships, resolutions can serve as the cat-

Remember the Reason for the Season alyst that ultimately rights the ship. • Resolutions can promote self-esteem and empowerment. Making resolutions and keeping them can provide a sense of accomplishment that comes with goal-setting and following through. Resolving to lose five pounds and then seeing the proof on a scale can be a powerful motivator that compels you to make other self-improvements. Accomplishing small goals also can boost self-esteem. Resolutions are often made at the dawn of a new year. These efforts can provide the motivation and direction people need to make positive changes in their lives.

The importance of shopping locally has been emphasized with increasing urgency in recent years. Events like Small Business Saturday and Plaid Friday have brought some much-needed attention to the importance of shopping local, which is even more crucial now as so many small businesses try to survive the pandemic. A poll from the trade group the National Federation of Independent Business reported that about half of all the businesses in the survey reported a 25 percent drop in sales since the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, and roughly one in five businesses have seen sales decline by more than 50 percent. If the economic climate does not radically improve, 20 percent of small businesses won’t survive. According to NBC News, small businesses employ 60 million people in the United States, almost half of the nation’s private-sector employees. In addition, small businesses generate tax revenues that help communities by funding schools, maintaining parks and contributing to public safety programs. However, based on research from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, even before COVID-19 spread across the world, only 20 percent of healthy small businesses had sufficient cash reserves to continue to operate if they experienced a revenue loss for two months. Some have been shuttered for much longer. Individuals looking for everything from clothing to home improvement services to office supplies can look to small businesses to fill those needs. • Look for small businesses for any and all of your shopping needs. Chances are items sold by big box retailers also are sold by small businesses. When the

options are the same or similar, purchase from a small business instead of its big box competitor. • Readily provide recommendations of small businesses with which you have done business. Too often people are quick to complain about places that have failed them, but those same people don’t think to say kind words about companies that went above and beyond. Share great experiences on social media or through word of mouth. • Talk to small businesses owners first if you have an issue. It’s tempting to go directly to social media to complain about something, but such complaints can have a dire impact. Always take issues to the manager or business owner first to see if a resolution can be reached. A manager may not be aware of an issue at all. Give small businesses a chance to make it right before taking things public. • If you own a small business, rely on other small businesses to fulfill your needs. Order supplies from fellow small business owners, seek the help of local financial advisors and tax professionals and use local suppliers and delivery personnel. Small businesses have experienced unprecedented setbacks due to COVID-19. By supporting small businesses, communities can help them regain stable footing.

Q:

A:

This watch holder is an elaborate clock when a pocket watch is put into the hole. An interesting, money-saving idea by an anonymous person in the 19th century.

The small watch that could be carried by a person was developed after 1810. Then came pocket watches worn on a chain, and in 1868 the wristwatch was made. But there was still no affordable clock for home use. An unknown person made the first watch holder in the early 1800s. The holder was a small decorative stand that held an available pocket watch on a table. They were made of ceramics, metal, wood — anything that could be shaped into a stand with a large hole. Some were even made by famous artists and jewelers of bronze or gold, or by a company that made ceramic dishes or statues. Most were not signed.

December 7, 2020

There has always been a need to tell time, and early methods — sundials, hourglasses, water clocks or even large arrangements of stones and shadows — were not accurate. The first mechanical clocks were invented in the 14th century, the pendulum clock in 1656, and by the 1700s there were many clocks in church towers that rang bells to tell citizens the time.

The watch holder is often a “whatsit.â€? The hole in the middle is confusing to a 21st century person who tells time with a wristwatch or cellphone. A Neal Auction in New Orleans sold an early 19th century watch holder of gilt bronze. It is shaped like a harp held by swans on a pedestal base. When the watch is inserted in the hole near the top, it creates a decorative “clock.â€? It sold for $875. *** We have an iron doorstop from my grandfather’s house. It has five black and white puppies hanging on a log fence and is 8 inches high and 12 inches wide. We’d like to sell it, but don’t know what it’s worth. Can you help? Cast iron doorstops were made beginning about 1890. They became popular around 1910 when several companies in the United States began making figural doorstops. Vintage figural cast iron doorstops made from 1890 to the 1930s, and in good condition, usually sell for the highest prices. New designs and reproductions of old doorstops sold in gift shops, home decorating stores and online are worth less. The doorstop you describe was made in China and is not old. It sells online for $30 to $60. *** CURRENT PRICES Cambridge glass, candy jar, lid, rose du barry, peach-blo, acid etched, silver leaf bands, knob, 6 inches, $115. Hubley doorstop, cat, red, art deco, cast iron, c. 1925, 5Âź x 4½ inches, $375. Tiffany salt and pepper shakers, owl, silver, 2 1/2 inches, $920. Hasselblad camera, 503CX, Zeiss lenses, branded carrying case, 10 x 13 inches, $1,970. *** TIP: Look at the hinge on a tilt-top table. The wear should show on both the top and the base if it is old. Looking to declutter, downsize or settle an estate? The all new 2021 “Kovels’ Antiques & Collectibles Price Guideâ€? by Terry and Kim Kovel has the information you’re looking for.

Though by first glance the space looked orderly, upon closer examination, the room’s dirty truths began to reveal themselves. Fingerprints on literally every surface. Streaks of gravy from Thanksgiving leftovers now glued on the wall. Muddy footprints from a slight winter thaw track across the floor. Balls of dust have gathered under the corner table like tumbleweeds in the desert. Literally every corner of this kitchen is in need of a deep cleaning, and Claire hasn’t even ventured to the bathrooms, bedrooms or other common spaces of her house. Claire has a problem, like so many other homeowners across the state who have been quarantined in their residences ~ too many

people spending too much time in the same spaces, day after day. Dirt is inevitable. Mess is unavoidable. Dust is inescapable. Dinge is everywhere. It is time for Claire to call in The Clean Team! The Clean Team is a West Warwick-based cleaning company started by partners Briana Kearns and Randy Bodick. They are young, hard-working, reliable, trust-worthy, and extremely thorough. lives, and their newlyformed business is just an extension of a work-life that has always demanded complete customer satisfaction. They work to please, and they will work hard for you. This diligent pair of “neat freaks” will come into your home or business and clean it from top to bottom. This free estimate will be followed by a visit of your determination – a one-time “deep cleaning”, a weekly or bi-weekly job, a monthly commitment. They will accommodate your schedule. They will provide their own supplies and equipment unless you request otherwise. They won’t leave until they pass your “white glove test.” Randy and Briana are also highly aware of the discomfort people might now feel inviting others into their homes and businesses and take every precaution when cleaning in your private space. How to save up for your first home

Home ownership is a dream for people across the globe. Many people save for years before buying their first homes, squirreling away every dollar they can with the hopes they can one day become homeowners. But thanks to factors beyond their control, even the most devoted savers can sometimes feel like their dream of home ownership may never come true. According to the Pew Research Center, American workers’ paychecks are larger than they were 40 years ago, but their purchasing power is essentially the same. Things aren’t much different in Canada, where analysis from Statistics Canada and the Bank of Canada has shown that, since 2015, wage growth in Canada

has been weaker than in the United States. Various challenges can make it difficult to buy a home. However, some simple strategies can help prospective home buyers build their savings as they move closer to the day when they can call themselves “homeowners.” • Determine where your money is going. If you’re finding it hard to grow your savings, audit your monthly expenses to determine where your money is going. Using exclusively debit or credit cards can simplify this process, as all you need to do is log into your accounts and see how your money was spent over a given period. If you routinely use cash to pay for

items, even just to buy coffee on the way to work, keep a notepad handy so you can jot down each expense. Do this for a month and then examine how you spent your money. Chances are you will see various ways to save, and you can then redirect that money into your savings account. • Become a more savvy grocery shopper. Another great way to save more money is to alter something you already do each month: grocery shopping. If you haven’t already, sign up for discount clubs at your local grocer. This is a largely effortless way for shoppers, especially those buying food for families, to save considerable amounts of money. Shopping sales at competing grocery stores also can

save money. • Dine in more often. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that Americans spend, on average, 6 percent of their household budgets on food. However, the USDA also notes that Americans spend 5 percent of their disposable income on dining out. If these figures mirror your spending habits, you can nearly cut your food spending in half by dining out less frequently. That might be a sacrifice for foodies, but it can get you that much closer to buying your own home. Saving enough money to purchase your first home is a worthy effort that can be made easier by employing a few budget-friendly strategies. MM18C506

SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE REMINDER

Liberty Disposal isn’t skipping a beat after two-decade hiatus By JACOB MARROCCO Liberty Disposal is back on the scene in 2020, and navigating the coronavirus pandemic hasn’t been easy for Bob Greenwood. Liberty specializes in containers for construction and home cleanouts, as well as designing industrial compactors for apartments and businesses. The company is brand new, but also somewhat of a revival. Anthony Vinagro and his brother Joe started Liberty in 1980 before selling the property 18 years later. “We started up again because we had a lot of clients, one of the family members sold Patriot Disposal, and a lot of our old customers wanted to do business with a familyowned business again,” Greenwood told Beacon Communications. “They like dealing with people who understand that [family bond], and know their neighborhoods. One of the things about Anthony and Joe is that they’ve always had, for many years, the contracts for Johnston for the home trash pickup. So a lot of times you get clients that want to work with the person that they know knows their home.” Greenwood offered advice for folks looking to use extra time at home to create a bit more space. He said Liberty provides containers of various different sizes, and potential clients should consider how much they are looking to unload before making a selection. “What I would say is for the customer to think about how many truckloads that they think of material that they would have in their home,” Greenwood said. “Then that will give us a good idea of how we would recommend the best size container to save them money so they’re not spending more on a container with tonnage when they should.” He said that people

should reconsider tossing mattresses and boxsprings into the trash, as they are recyclable and local departments of public works “nine times out of 10” have programs that allow for free disposal. Some municipalities have similar collections for televisions, computers and paint. “So a lot of times people will put something in the container like propane tanks, those are recyclable,” Greenwood said. “Paints, again, they can contact their local Department of Public Works and they can get rid of all the paint without having to pay anything for it — especially not putting it into the container where it’s not allowed. That’s what we usually tend to run in to when people are putting things in the container that they shouldn’t be putting in the containers.” Vinagro said the family name is well known in Johnston, as he grew up in town. The company’s reach and reputation extends throughout the state, too, into Green-

wood’s home of Cranston and beyond. He said they pride themselves on guaranteeing service within 24 hours. “We’ve lived here our whole lives so we kind of know everybody in town, and if we don’t, they’ve heard of us,” Vinagro said. “We don’t work in just Johnston either, we work throughout the state but over the years we’ve been in the industry so long we’ve made a lot of relationships with a lot of people and they like the service. If they have an issue they can call us. If they have an emergency…they can call me.” Vinagro said quick and efficient service has always been a draw, and the reason is simple according to Greenwood: People don’t want trash lingering in front of their home. “Once they’re done with the container, they want the container out of there as quickly as possible, and we’re mindful of that,” Greenwood said. “That’s what’s most importance in our business, is service. And our price

is always a factor, but service is what we care about most. All of our drivers have minimum 15 years experience in the industry.” Greenwood said Liberty Disposal employees treat a customer’s home as if it were their own. He cited stories of patrons calling back to secure specific delivery drivers because of the rapport they’ve established with them. “I had one just the other day call me and specifically ask me for that driver because he’s been to his home five years ago,” Greenwood told the Sun Rise. “That, I think, is really nice. I like saying to the customer that that driver’s going to be there to service them.”

cozy and inviting neighborhoods appear during the holiday season when homes are strung with twinkling lights. Homeowners can replicate that look all year long with lighting elements. Lighting for evening hours also helps maintain a safe environment for people who are visiting the property. Illuminating walkways and doorways provides a clearly visible and safe path to and from the home. The following are a few ways to improve outdoor lighting. • Focus on architectural features. Outdoor lighting can focus on the external features of the home’s architectural style. Use light to draw attention to interesting gables, dramatic roof lines, dormers, or curved entryways. • Play up landscaping. Stylish lighting can highlight trees, shrubs, pathways, gardens, and all of the elements of softscapes and hardscapes on a property. The lighting experts at Vernon Daniel Associates say that soft lighting can make homes feel warm and cozy. Uplighting trees or other elements can add a dramatic effect.

• Light up all doors. Make sure that doors, both entry and garage, are properly lit for ease of entry and egress from the home. Consider using home automation to control porch lights and other outdoor lights remotely, if necessary. • Create entertaining areas. Outdoor lighting can be used to extend the hours residents can spend outside. This is great for entertaining and can be an excellent selling point. Homeowners are urged not to overlook outdoor lighting as a vital part of their plan to improve curb appeal.

In a microwave-safe bowl, heat chocolate coating, uncovered, for 90 seconds on high power, and stir. Continue to microwave and stir at 30-second intervals until almost melted. (Be sure to use a dry bowl and utensils.) Add 1 teaspoon peppermint extract, and stir until smooth. 3. Pour onto the foil-lined baking sheet. Spread evenly into a thin layer, approximately 10 by 14 inches. 4. In another microwave-safe bowl, heat white coating as in step 2. Add 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract (optional), and stir until smooth. Spoon evenly over chocolate layer, which should be setting up, but not hard, as you want the white layer to bond with the base layer. 5. Immediately sprinkle peppermint pieces over all and lightly press them into the white layer with a spatula or a spoon. Don't wait on this step, or the top layer will harden and the candies won't stick. 5. Let stand for an hour or refrigerate until hardened. Break into pieces. Makes about 1 3/4 pounds. *** Find more family fun in Donna's book "Donna Erickson's Fabulous Funstuff for Families." 12

My father, Howard, was in the Air Force and my mother, Angeline, was a homemaker. They didn’t have a lot of money to buy Christmas presents for my three siblings or me, but it never seemed to matter. They gave us lots of love, and faith in God, and in the future, no matter how bleak things might look in the present. The Bible says that faith is “a gift of God.” I believe that. It would take a God to create something as wonderful and as life-sustaining as faith. It takes great faith to carry on during all the troubles we’ve all faced day in and day out his year. The wonderful thing about faith is that the more you use it, the more it grows. Unlike earthly things which become worn and depleted when used time after time, faith becomes even stronger and more abundant the more that you use it. I often hear about people “losing faith.” If you feel like that, all I can say is that lost things are often found in the most unexpected places at the most unexpected times. I’ve misplaced things, thinking that they were lost, only to find them when I was looking for something else. The thing I’d thought I’d lost was there all the time, waiting for me to discover it and use it again. Faith is like that, sometimes when you think you’ve reached the end of your ability to believe, something or someone comes along to shore you up so that you can continue. I have great faith in the future and the abilities of the American people to preserve in these difficult times. We must love and speak lovingly about our country. A thing that is not loved will not grow properly. We must

have faith in our personal abilities and in our potential as a people to grow stronger together. We must never forget the faith of our forefathers and what this country was built on. While the holidays pose their own special set of personal and financial challenges, it’s also a time to appreciate and treasure the priceless things in our lives — love, faith, family and friends. No matter what your circumstances, hold on to hope, preserve and cherish your family’s heritage, memories and recipes. And most importantly in these difficult times, keep the faith. While I have wonderful memories of the dishes that my mother made for Christmas, this year, I’ve decided to start a holiday tradition of my own. I call this recipe Christmas Chicken because it’s a beautiful holiday dish with lots of colorful red tomatoes, white pasta and green basil or parsley. It’s also inexpensive, simple to make, and can be doubled to easily feed a crowd.

Depositphotos

I look forward to sharing it with my family and friends for years to come. Merry Christmas, and have a blessed holiday season!

teaspoon sugar cup fresh flat-leaf parsley or basil, cut into ribbons 1/2 cup grated Parmesan or Romano cheese 1. Cover chicken breasts with plastic wrap and pound each piece to an even thickness, about 1 inch in the thickest parts. Remove the plastic and sprinkle each piece of chicken on both sides with 1 tablespoon of the poultry season, 1 teaspoon each of the salt and 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper, and 1/8 teaspoon of the cayenne pepper. 2. To the flour, add 1/2 tablespoon of the poultry seasoning, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon of the black pepper, and mix well. Press the chicken into the flour on both sides, shake off the excess and set aside. 3. Make the pasta according to package directions. When the pasta is cooked, drain it but reserve 1/2 cup of the pasta water to add to the sauce. 4. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil and butter in a large heavy skillet over medium heat until sizzling, about 2 to 3 minutes. Add the seasoned chicken and pan-fry for 4 to 5 minutes on each side until golden brown. 5. Place the chicken on a plate and set aside. Add the onions to the pan and cook for 2 minutes. Add in the garlic, tomatoes, the remaining 1/2 tablespoon poultry seasoning, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper and 1/2 tablespoon cayenne, and the cloves or nutmeg and sugar. Turn heat to simmer, and cook to a sauce-like mixture, about 5-7 minutes. Add the reserved pasta cooking water as needed if the sauce is too thick. 6. Cut the chicken into strips and add it to the sauce. Stir in half of the parsley or basil. Top the drained pasta with the sauce and stir to combine over medium heat for about 1 to 2 minutes. To serve, sprinkle the pasta with the remaining parsley or basil and the grated cheese. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) At this time you might want to resist that otherwise admirable Aries penchant for getting to the heart of a matter quickly. Keep in mind that a delicate situation calls for patience. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your aspects favor more diplomacy and fewer direct confrontations when dealing with a relationship problem. Avoiding hurt feelings can help in your search for the truth. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Positive aspects are strong this week. Although you might still have to deal with some problems caused by a recent period of turmoil, you are making progress, and that’s what counts. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A family matter could benefit from your counsel. But don’t come into it unless invited, and don’t stay if you feel uneasy. Just remember to reassure one and all that you’ll be there for them. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As the truth about an ongoing situation emerges, you could find that you were right to defer judgment before you had all the facts. Now would be a good time to move on to other matters. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your plans to take control of a personal situation because you feel you are best qualified could create resentment. Best to hear what everyone else involved in the matter has to say about it.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Uncovering some surprising background facts about that ongoing personal matter could make you reconsider the extent of your involvement. A neutral family member offers advice. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Religious or spiritual themes start to dominate your aspect this week. This can serve as a counterweight to the mounting effects of the season’s growing commercialization. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Taking on that recent challenge impressed a lot of important decision-makers. Meanwhile, proceed with your holiday plans, and don’t forget to include you-know-who in them. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Disagreeing with an opinion you can’t accept could be dicey, and your motives might be questioned. Best to wait to mount a challenge until you have support for your position. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Getting involved in helping others in this increasingly hectic period not only makes the generous Aquarian feel good, but you could also gain a more substantive benefit from your actions. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The Piscean way of thinking clearly and objectively helps you resolve a complex situation without creating any ill will. Don’t be surprised if your counsel is requested on another matter. • On Dec. 23, 1620, one week after the Mayflower arrived at Plymouth harbor in present-day Massachusetts, construction of the first permanent European settlement in New England begins. The term “Pilgrim” was derived from a manuscript in which Gov. Bradford spoke of the “saints” who traveled to the New World as “pilgrimes.” • On Dec. 22, 1808, Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67 made its world premiere. The Fifth Symphony is instantly recognizable by its powerful four-note opening motif — three short Gs followed by a long E-flat. • On Dec. 25, 1880, Layne Hall is born in Mississippi. When he died in 1990, Hall was the oldest licensed driver in the U.S. In nearly 75 years on the road, Hall never got a speeding ticket or citation of any kind. • On Dec. 26, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson announces the nationalization of a majority of the country’s railroads under the Federal Possession and Control Act due to World War I. Two days later, the United States Railroad Administration seized control. • On Dec. 24, 1923, President Calvin Coolidge touches a button and lights up the first national Christmas tree to grace the White House grounds. The tree was the first to be decorated with electric lights — a strand of 2,500 red, white and green bulbs. • On Dec. 27, 1932, at the height of the Great Depression, thousands turn out for the opening of Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Designed as a place where ordinary people could see quality entertainment, it remains the largest indoor theater in the world. • On Dec. 21, 1975, in Vienna, Austria, Carlos the Jackal leads a raid on a meeting of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, killing three people and taking 63 hostages. Carlos evaded capture until 1994, when French agents found him hiding in the Sudan.
