AARP Survey: We Want to Grow Older at Home We want to stay home as we age. That much is clear from a recent survey by AARP. The 70-question survey touched on all types of topics about home and community preferences, with responses broken down by age. Here are some of the answers from seniors age 50 and older: 77% of us want to stay in our own homes as we age. 79% of us want to stay in our communities as we age. 33% of us know we will need modifications to our homes so we can stay in them and be safe as well as independent. The number of households headed by seniors in the next 20 years is going to rise from 34 million to 48 million. We’re going to want smart home devices and bathtub grab bars (and a full bath on the ground floor), as well as voice activated gadgets, wider doorways and easy access through the front door. We’ll also want accessory dwelling units (known as ADUs), such as in-law apartments or additions, so others can be nearby but not living with us. (AARP and Lowe’s have announced a collaboration to launch Lowe’s Livable Home, which will include services and products to help us create and build what we need so we can stay in our homes. See its website at www.lowes.com.) Safety also is on our minds, and over half of us would move to another area if it’s safer. Nearly half would move if it lowered our expenses. But we want a nice community, too, with bike trails and fast internet, ideally a small town where stores and services are nearby. If you want to see the survey questions and compare your own answers, go to www.aarp.org and search for 2021 AARP Home and Community Preferences Survey.

SALVATION PRAYER Dear Heavenly Father, I want to be your child. I believe Jesus shed his blood and died for my sins. Jesus was buried and rose from the dead. Jesus lives eternally. I ask Jesus to be my Savior and my Lord. Please forgive my sins and direct my life. I pray in the Name of Jesus. Amen. A PRAYER TO GOD Matt 6:8-13 Our Father which art in Heaven Hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:: for thine is the Kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Amen. AB

Signs it’s time to replace your computer A popular advertising campaign suggests the country runs on coffee. However, a more accurate assessment may suggest the nation runs on digital devices. From smartphones to laptops to tablets to desktop computers, there isn’t a day that goes by that the average person doesn’t rely on a computerized device in some shape or form. Statista reports that, as of 2019, almost half of private households worldwide were estimated to have a computer. In developing countries, computer penetration hovered around one-third of households. Technology is great when it is working optimally. But when systems get bogged down, the same devices that are typically invaluable can quickly become problematic. Routine housekeeping and other repairs can help keep devices in top form, but at some point it may be time to invest in new equipment. The following signs may indicate that it’s time to upgrade a device. Age Various technology experts weigh in with different advice regarding the life span of computers. Computer Hope says consumers should expect to replace a computer once every four years. Home Computer Help advises five years for desktops and three to four for laptops is a good time frame. One Computer Guy says a laptop can last upwards of seven or eight years. If you’re approaching your 10- or 15-year high school reunion and still using the same computer, it’s likely time for some new equipment. Outdated software
If you’ve received pop-up warnings or emails from software manufacturers that their products will no longer be supported on your operating system, it’s time to update that OS. If your computer is beyond updates, then it is probably time to move on to a newer model. Operating system updates and firmware updates include security patches and troubleshooting solutions to help keep data safe. Without regular updates, you increase the risk of data hacks or other problems, according to Consumer Reports. Poor performance If it takes more time for your computer to boot up, run programs or save files, or if the device is freezing and crashing, consider an upgrade. First try to free up internal hard drive memory space or increase RAM, which could

be bogging down the system. The Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) or consistently spinning color wheel or hourglass symbols often mean something is seriously wrong. Repeated issues with system errors or sluggish performance indicate a computer is on its last legs. Overheating Constant overheating is a sure sign that a computer is not working efficiently. Blocked cooling fans will cause overheating, but random overheating caused by a seriously dusty interior or other factors will damage internal components, offers Bustle. Most modern computers have longer life spans than earlier incarnations, but they aren’t eternal. Plan to purchase a new computer if consistent problems interfere with work or play.

How different vitamins affect the body
At the dawn of a new year, it’s not uncommon for people take inventory of their personal health and strive to make positive changes. Being more conscientious of the foods they put into their bodies is a start, but some individuals may wonder if supplementation can help them go one step further. Nutrition Insight reports that 77 percent of American adults consume dietary supplements, and Nutraceuticals World indicates 98 percent of adult supplement users are taking vitamins and minerals. Individuals considering supplements should always discuss them with their physicians prior to including them in their health regimens. Even those who haven’t considered supplements can discuss them with their physicians, as Harvard Health, MedlinePlus and the U.S. National Library of Medicine note that various products can provide some significant benefits. • Vitamin A (retinoids/carotene): Beta carotene can be converted into vitamin A as needed. It plays an important role in vision, keeps tissues and skin healthy, and also is involved with bone growth. • Vitamin B1 (thiamin): Helps convert food into energy, and is essential for brain health and nerve function. • Vitamin B2 (riboflavin): This works with other B vitamins by promoting growth and the production of red blood cells. • Vitamin B3 (niacin): Helps convert food into energy. It’s also essential for healthy skin, blood cells, brain, and nervous system function. • Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid): Helps make lipids, neurotransmitters, steroid hormones, and hemoglobin in the body. • Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine): This vitamin may reduce the risk of heart disease by helping to
lower homocysteine levels. It also helps convert tryptophan into niacin and serotonin, a mood-regulating neurotransmitter. • Vitamin B9 (folate): Vital for new cell creation, it helps prevent brain and spine birth defects when taken early in pregnancy. It also may lower risk for colon cancer risk. • Vitamin B12 (cobalamin): Vitamin B12 is important for metabolism and energy production. It also helps form red blood cells and maintain the central nervous system. • Biotin: Biotin helps to metabolize proteins and carbohydrates. It also promotes healthy bones and hair. • Vitamin C (ascorbic acid): This is an important antioxidant that promotes healthy teeth and gums. It also helps the body absorb iron and maintains healthy tissue by promoting wound healing. Vitamin C may help boost the immune system to help with illness prevention or recov-
ery. • Vitamin D (calciferol): Also known as the “sunshine vitamin,” vitamin D is made in the body after individuals spend time in the sun. It is hard to get enough vitamin D from food sources alone. Vitamin D also helps the body absorb calcium, which is vital for healthy bones and teeth. • Vitamin E (tocopherol): An antioxidant that helps the body form red blood cells and use vitamin K. Scientists also are studying a potential relationship between vitamin E and a lower risk for Alzheimer’s disease. • Vitamin K (menadione): Vitamin K activates proteins and calcium essential to blood clotting. It also may help prevent hip fractures. In addition to these vitamins, the body needs various minerals, including calcium, iron, copper, iodine, magnesium, and more. Speak with a doctor or nutritionist to learn more about supplementation.

• On Jan. 9, 1493, Christopher Columbus, sailing near the Dominican Republic, sees three “mermaids” and describes them as “not half as beautiful as they are painted.” They were in reality manatees. Mythical mermaids have existed in seafaring cultures since the time of the ancient Greeks. • On Jan. 6, 1759, a 26-year-old George Washington marries Martha Dandridge Custis. Historical documents have revealed that Martha may not have been the great love of his life. Washington wrote cryptic yet passionate love letters to Sally Fairfax, the wife of a friend. • On Jan. 4, 1847, Samuel Colt rescues his faltering gun company by winning a contract to provide the U.S. government with 1,000 of his .44 caliber revolvers. Though never cheap, by the early 1850s, Colt revolvers were inexpensive enough to be a favorite with Americans headed westward during the California Gold Rush. • On Jan. 5, 1945, Japanese pilots receive the first order to become kamikaze, meaning “divine wind.” They needed little training to take planes full of explosives and crash them into ships. At Okinawa, they sank 30 ships and killed almost 5,000 Americans. • On Jan. 7, 1959, six days after the fall of the Fulgencio Batista dictatorship in Cuba, the U.S. government believes it can work with Fidel Castro and protect American interests in Cuba. Less than two years later, the U.S. severed diplomatic relations and launched the Bay of Pigs invasion. • On Jan. 8, 1962, at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, the Mona Lisa, is exhibited for the first time in America. • On Jan. 3, 1990, Panama’s Gen. Manuel Antonio Noriega, after hiding at the Vatican embassy in Panama City, surrenders to U.S. military troops to face charges of drug trafficking and is flown to Miami. In 1992, the former dictator was convicted and sentenced to 40 years in prison.

HOLLYWOOD — Henry Cavill is on the short list to become James Bond! He’s certainly qualified, after three Superman films (combined grosses of $2 billion) and a season of Netflix’s “The Witcher” (season 2 just premiered, and there’s already a pickup for season 3). He’s currently shooting “Enola Holmes 2” and preparing “Argylle” for Apple TV+, with Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena and Samuel L. Jackson, the first of three in a franchise. In “Argylle,” Cavill plays a larger-thanlife action hero (with a wink). That will be followed by the “Highlander” reboot (for which he’s getting $5 million), the start of yet another franchise for him. His last 007-type film, “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” (2015), grossed only $107 million, which didn’t cover its $85 million-plus price tag. *** Hollywood studios are famous for their creative bookkeeping. Big-name stars are warned to get their money up front because the back-end profits often suffer from studios “cooking the books”! Anthony McCarten, writer of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” recently sued 20th Century Fox because it claimed “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which cost $55 million, lost $51 million. He was contracted to receive 5% of the profits, from the back end, but hasn’t seen a cent of the $900 million it grossed, so he filed a more than 50-page lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court. In 1989, James Garner sued Universal Pictures for $16.5 million for syndication royalties from his “Rockford Files” series. He was only paid only $249,000 of the $119 million royalties, but six years later he settled out of court for an undisclosed sum (rumored to be $6 million). In 2013, Don Johnson sued Rysher Entertainment for foreign-syndication monies owed for his “Nash Bridges” series (of which he was part owner). He sued for $50 million, and a panel of judges ruled he be paid $15 mil-

Henry Cavill lion. He persisted and was awarded an estimated $19 million and 50% of the copyright of the series. In July 2012, “Happy Days” cast members Anson Williams, Marion Ross, Don Most, Erin Moran and Patricia Bosley, widow of Tom Bosley, sued CBS for the unpaid use of their likenesses and names in merchandising and got $65,000 in their settlement. Stars Ron Howard and Henry Winkler had their own deals and were already amply paid. *** It had to happen: “General Hospital” stars Steve Burton (Jason Morgan, on and off since 1991) and Ingo Rademacher (Jasper Jax since 1996) were “dropped” from the show when they refused to get vaccinated after a Nov. 1 vaccine mandate. The other three soaps, “The Bold and The Beautiful,” “Days of Our LIves” and “The Young and The Restless,” have relied on testing, social distancing and other CDC guidelines. Will they get the point? Stay tuned. © 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

What to do if you’re forced to evacuate Natural disasters and extreme weather pose a significant threat. No one is invulnerable to such events, and even if the idea of evacuating your home seems unlikely, preparing for evacuation can ensure calmer heads prevail in the case of adverse situations like natural disasters. Ready.gov is a public service campaign that was established in February 2003 to help people prepare for, respond to and mitigate various types of emergencies, including natural disasters. The campaign notes that many types of emergencies can necessitate evacuation, and offers the following tips to individuals who have been told evacuation is their best option. • Download the FEMA app. The FEMA app is an invaluable resource for individuals facing evacuation. The app, which is available for download through the Google Play store as well as the Apple App Store, provides a host of important information, including a list of open shelters for individuals living in areas where officials are urging residents to evacuate. • Follow local evacuation instructions. Everyone has seen images of individuals stranded in areas that have been overtaken by flooding or destroyed by storms like hurricanes and tornados. Staying in place when evacuation orders have been issued puts your own life at risk as well as the lives of those who may attempt to help you, such as public safety officials. Many local public safety organizations will not send workers to help stranded citizens if the conditions pose a threat to the workers, which underscores how important it is that individuals evacuate when orders
are issued. • Don’t delay. The longer individuals wait to evacuate, the more risky the situation becomes. Ready. gov urges individuals to leave early enough to avoid being trapped by severe weather. Even if the storm is not scheduled to touch down for awhile, getting caught in last-minute traffic could put evacuees in harm’s way. When you begin to evacuate, stick to the recommended evacuation routes, as alternative routes may be closed. • Respect shelter pet policies. Evacuees who hope to stay in shelters must recognize that only service animals will be allowed in public shelters. Evacuees should still take their pets with them but should make arranging shelter for their companion animals part of their emergency strategy. Speak with friends or family members who live nearby but beyond the eye of the storm to determine if they can take in your pets should you be forced to evacuate your home. • Secure your home. Prior to evacuating, secure your home by locking doors and windows and unplugging electrical equipment like radios, televisions and small appliances. Pay attention to evacuation order details, which may advise residents to shut off water, gas and electricity before leaving their homes. • Stay in touch. Do your best to stay in touch with friends and family once you have evacuated your home. Let others know where you are going and inform them once you have arrived at your destination. In the days prior to evacuating, forward a copy of your evacuation plan to family members in other regions but also those who live locally so they can

follow suit if need be. Few people want to imagine evacuating their homes. Such a scenario can be frightening, but it’s considerably less daunting when individuals know what to do and where to go during the evacuation.

quickly prove deadly. If carbon monoxide concentrations are too high, individuals can lose their lives in as little as five minutes. And this is no insignificant threat, as the Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that 95 people died from generator-associated carbon monoxide poisoning in 2017. CR recommends operating generators at least 20 feet away from the house. Individuals should familiarize themselves with their generators upon purchasing them so they aren’t forced to endure a trial by fire when the power goes out. • Stock up on essentials. The Red Cross recommends keeping a twoweek supply of nonperishable food and water in the house, making sure to date each container of water and replace it every six months. Keep some extra coolers in the house so food can be stored on ice before it spoils in the refrigerator or freezer. In addition, make sure there’s enough blankets in the house to keep everyone warm overnight, as it’s not safe to use outdoor heaters indoors. Stock up on battery-powered lights and candles to light the house at night, but make sure all candles are extinguished before going to bed. Extended power outages can be a nuisance. Planning for such outages in advance can make blackouts more manageable.

Planning ahead can help make adverse situations more manageable. Such is the case when storms strike and the power goes out. Extended power outages may not be pleasant, but some proactive planning can make it easier to withstand blackouts. • Establish a local support network. Support can be just as valuable as supplies when confronting power outages. The American Red Cross urges individuals to identify people who can help them during an extended power outage. Such individuals may help you stay at home or evacuate if the power will be out for a lengthy period of time. Support networks can include relatives who live in nearby towns, but also neighbors. A single street can be served by different substations and main power lines, so friends or neighbor across the street may keep their power when your house does not, or vice versa. When the power goes out, support networks can pool their resources in various ways, including sharing refrigerators or allowing neighbors without power to access the internet. Such support makes it easier for everyone to get through the outage with as little interruption to their lives as possible. • Print a list of important contacts. If the power is out, it’s only a matter of time before smartphones lose their battery power. Phones can always be plugged into vehicles to get a quick power boost, but that’s not the most practical way to keep phones charged, especially if local roads are closed. A printed list of important contacts, including nearby relatives like seniors who may be incapacitated, doctors and school officials, ensures people whose phone batteries have died can still contact their loved ones and other important individuals so long as they can use a neighbor’s or a loved one’s phone. • Learn to use your generator. Consumer Reports notes that improper operation of a generator can

Splatterware Pitcher
Reg. #33777
It is easy to guess what this is — a rainbow spatterware water pitcher. But how old is it? Spatterware was first made in the late 1700s in England, but most found today dates from about 1800 to 1850 in Staffordshire, England, made to sell in the United States. Unfortunately, the word “spatterware” now has several meanings, probably because novice collectors didn’t realize there is a difference between spatter and spongeware. Another hazard is that there are fairly good copies of spatterware made today to be used in the kitchen. Experts can tell the old from the new by the shape, weight and the white glaze color. They also know the difference in the look of a spattered paint mark and the mark left by a paint-dipped sponge. Old rainbow spatter like this pitcher is expensive, and the double G-scroll handle is an added value feature. This piece sold with the buyers’ premium for $5,227. *** When I bought my beauty shop in 1972, it had a Coke machine. It was made by the Vendo Company of Kansas City. Cokes cost 15 cents. But it isn’t the typical red-and-white Coke machine — the front looks like wood and has eight panels with black trim. The machine still works, and I have it in my home. Could you tell me its value? The Vendo company was started in the late 1930s in Kansas City, Missouri. The Vendo Model 56 vending machine was designed about 1956 and made until the mid-1960s. The machine held 56 bottles, sizes 8 ounces to 12 ounces, in up to seven varieties. It was offered in red and white, red and white with woodgrain, and with woodgrain “decorator doors” that made it look like a cabinet rather than a brightly colored soda machine. Styles included Danish, Provincial, Colonial, Traditional and Mediterranean, like yours. Vintage Vendo soda vending machines in old and worn but working condition that advertise brands like Coca-Cola or Pepsi sell from about

Reno 911! The Hunt for QAnon (NR) — All I can ask is, why hasn’t this special gotten to us sooner?! If anyone will fail at tracking down the leader of an anti-government faction, it’s this dysfunctional and easily distracted crew of the Reno Sheriff’s Department. While doing recon at a QAnon convention, the group gets stranded at sea, and then finds themselves stuck at none other than Jeffrey Epstein’s former island. Awkward! All the favorite characters return, including shorty-shorts-wearing Lieutenant Dangle (Thomas Lennon) and Deputy Clementine Johnson, played by Wendi McLendon-Covey. Premieres Dec. 23. (Paramount+)

the custodial parent of their brood. What follows is a weird game of the parents trying to convince their own children that they’d really prefer living with the other parent. It’s a bizarre battle stemming from the selfishness of adults trying to have it all for themselves. (HBOMax) King Tut in Color (NR) — There was a time in the 1980s when scads of old black and white movies were being colorized thanks to advances in digital colorization. One set that had escaped color until now is the 1922 newsreel footage of the discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb. This 44-minute NatGeo documentary shows the excavation process of British archaeologist Howard Carter and his team as they unearth Tut’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings over 3,000 years after his death, in all of its golden glory. Being the Ricardos (R) — The long-awaited story of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz as their iconic characters of Lucy and Ricky Ricardo has finally arrived. Not since Tom Cruise was cast as the vampire LeStat has there been so much quizzical buzz about casting, namely Nicole Kidman as Lucy. While the story focuses on a time when “I Love Lucy” was facing cancellation, interwoven is the effect of the McCarthyism of the time, rampant sexism, Ball’s desire for control and the relationship between Lucy and Desi (played by Javier Bardem). J.K. Simmons has received applause for his performance as neighbor Fred Mertz, but early reviews of both Kidman and the entire presentation are mixed. (Prime Video) Don’t Look Up (R) — The plot for this dark comedy with a message is remarkably timely as NASA is planning on hitting an asteroid that’s coming too close to Earth for comfort. On screen, Leo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence play low-level astronomers desperately trying to warn the government, the media and the world of impending doom and certain death via a giant comet, only to be met by indifference, laughs and disbelief. The rest of the cast is about as jam-packed with fellow Oscar nominees and winners as you can get, including Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Timothee Chalamet and Cate Blanchett, plus Matthew Perry, Ariana Grande and more. Premieres Dec. 24. (Netflix) You Keep the Kids! (NR) -– In this subtitled Spanish language comedy (AKA “Mama o Papa”), main characters Flora and Victor are parents of three kids. Upon deciding to divorce and each pursue their own dream career opportunities, they realize that neither of them considered remaining

If there's an official flavor of the season it has to be peppermint. And if you've waited to the last minute to make holiday treats for your friends, don't fret! Peppermint has got you covered. There's a general rule of thumb that makes holiday gift giving much easier: When in doubt, go the foodie gift route. That said, here are some favorite recipes starring the red and white cane. They're easy, fun to prepare, inexpensive and make great gifts. The hardest part is getting the stupid plastic wrap off the candy canes.

CANDY CANE VODKA 6 full sized candy canes 750 ml vodka First, don't waste the good stuff. Buy inexpensive vodka. Use a food processor (or go medieval with a mallet) to render the candy canes into a chunky powder. Pour off a couple ounces of the vodka and reserve. Add the peppermint powder to the vodka and top off with reserved vodka to fill the bottle. Let it sit about an hour, shaking occasionally, until the candy canes are dissolved in the vodka. Admire the lovely pink color. Chill and serve. Easy peasy! So what do you do with the peppermint infused vodka? You can sip it over ice, use it to adulterate hot chocolate or eggnog, make peppermint mochas with a kick, or make a martini.

1. Name the first group that had a No. 1 R&B hit with “Get Ready.” 2. How many instruments did Prince play on his debut album in 1978? 3. How did Duane Eddy initially get that twang sound out of his guitar? 4. What was the first song played on “American Bandstand”? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “When you’re all alone in your lonely room, And there’s nothing but the smell of her perfume.” Answers 1. The Temptations, in 1966. Rare Earth released a cover in 1970, and although their version went gold, it didn’t top the charts. 2. All of them. On “For You,” Prince played over two dozen different instruments. He was 19 years old. 3. Eddy used a gigantic empty water storage tank when the recording studio didn’t have an echo chamber. His song “Rebel-’Rouser” was featured in the 1994 film “Forrest Gump” in the scene where Forrest runs from bullies and cuts across the football field. 4. “Whole Lotta Shakin Goin’ On,” by Jerry Lee Lewis, on Aug. 5, 1957. 5. “Cry to Me,” by Solomon Burke in 1962. Burke’s version was used in the 1987 film “Dirty Dancing” with Patrick Swayze. Take a listen to the version by unknown Anthony Alvarez on YouTube. In fact, check out his whole channel.
