Prayer to St. Jude

Most holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of hopeless cases, of things almost despaired of. Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone. Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege given to you, to bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly (your request) and that I may praise God with you and all the elect forever. I promise, O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you. Amen. R.R.

DEAR READERS: As we close out one of the most tumultuous and stressful years of our lives, let’s look back and remember how much peace and joy our pets gave to us. When nothing else in the world seemed certain, we could count on our pets to offer unconditional love. That’s why, as we look forward to a new year and new hopes, we must honor and protect our best friends. Let’s resolve to: 1. Spend more time with our pets. Dogs and cats need regular attention and love. While we’re spending more time at home, it’s a perfect time to play with our pets, to add an extra training session and more walks into the routine. 2. Get pets the best care possible. Schedule that routine veterinary visit, and get your pets caught up on their vaccinations. A physical can head off serious illnesses. 3. Include your pets in your will. We don’t like to think about it, but end-oflife planning is important, and our pets need to be part of that planning. 4. Build lasting memories. Take as many photos with your pets as you can. Make scrapbooks that you can look through years from now to remember when your puppy was young, or to memorialize a beloved turtle, hamster, cat or dog. 5. Help other pet owners. So many people are silently struggling right now: either from job loss, ill health, grief or depression. They may not be able to take care of their pets as well as they can. Look out for your neighbors and offer to help if they ask for it. Donate money or supplies to local pet charities that offer assistance to pets and their owners. I wish you and your pets a happy, healthy 2021. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com. Š 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Managing chronic pain into one of your regular, activity-based sessions. Chronic pain can be reduced, managed, or sometimes eliminated with pain neuroscience education. Virtual Reality has been shown to be effective in helping individuals with chronic pain! Technology has made breakthroughs with helping us understand our bodies, movement, and pain. Think of this experience as a high-tech version of meditation. Through the headset, you’ll see familiar scenes and visually engaging experiences designed to help you take control of the pain. You will soon find out that you have some authority over your pain. Now, that’s good news! This cutting-edge program is exclusive to our clinics, unique in our region, and our therapists have been specially trained and certified in Pain Neuroscience Education and VR technology.

Chronic pain can be devastating and severely impact your life. You’ve tried everything: pills, miracle cures, injections and you wonder if you’ll have to live like this forever. Pain is tricky. It’s different for every human, and every human responds to pain differently. Acute pain is typically caused by tissue damage. Most of the time, once tissues heal, the pain goes away. However, for some people, even though tissues are healed, the pain does not go away. The nervous system ramps up and over-responds. This is considered chronic pain. The natural response for a body in pain is to stop moving. This is true for both acute and chronic issues and it’s nothing more than our protective instinct saying, “Hey, that’s not safe,” as if your mother was giving you a gentle warning. After a few days, we return to our normal movement and routines. But with chronic issues, that voice becomes louder, like when your mother calls your first AND middle name. That’s when things begin to get serious. Your brain is simply trying to get your attention. Chronic pain is complex. On one hand, you have John who broke his leg and recovered easily after surgery and rehab. On the other hand, you have Jane, who has never broken a bone or been in an accident but suffers from chronic back pain that has persisted for years. Why? Because chronic pain is an experience, not a tissue issue. Chronic pain evolves due to the overamplification of our nervous system’s response to a perceived threat. It can be magnified due to physical and emotional stress. Many see this as bad news, losing hope they’ll recover, but there is good news. Chronic pain is an imperfection in the mind-body relationship, relief comes from reestablishing that relationship. Your therapist can help you design a plan of action. You may find yourself mixing exercise and manual therapy with virtual reality (VR) to re-train your brain and body. Advances in neuroscience have refined our understanding of chronic pain. Our physical and occupational therapists will do an evaluation and identify causes and contributors to the pain. Once your goals are clear and a treatment plan is designed, VR and pain neuroscience interventions can be integrated

Resolve to Shake Up Your Breakfast Routine Every year, the most popular resolutions are: “Exercise to get in shape,” “Diet to lose weight,” “Save money” and “Eat healthier in general.” If you’ve resolved to take charge of your health in the new year, a nutritious breakfast is one of the best ways to start your day. When you eat a healthy breakfast, you consume less fat and cholesterol, eat more vitamins and minerals, have higher productivity throughout the morning and are more focused on the tasks at hand. A healthy breakfast also helps with weight loss and appetite control, and can lower cholesterol, which will reduce your risks for heart disease. According to the American Dietetic Association, breakfast is especially important for children and adolescents. Kids who eat a healthy breakfast have better concentration and problem-solving skills, improved hand-eye coordination, are more alert and creative, miss fewer days of school and are more physically active. If you’ve been skipping breakfast because you’re pressed for time, a vitamin- and nutrient-rich, power-packed smoothie is the answer. Smoothies are easy to make, can be adapted to suit individual tastes and best of all, they’re portable if you need a “breakfast to go.” These healthy smoothie recipes contain fruits, vegetables, wheat germ, soymilk and soft silken soy tofu, which is easier to incorporate in most drink or sauce recipes. When selecting soybean-based products like soy milk or tofu, look for a Certified Non-GMO label. This means the product was produced without genetic engineering

and its ingredients are not derived from genetically modified organisms. The label also means that a product has undergone stringent provisions for testing, traceability and segregation. Only Non-GMO Project Verified products can use the verification mark. The label also includes the project’s URL, where consumers can look up the product standard to better understand what it means. Non-GMO soy milk and tofu add many health benefits to smoothie recipes. Tofu contains considerable amounts of protein, omega-3 fats, calcium, selenium and other minerals and antioxidants that all play a role in good health. Tofu is bland in taste, but easily absorbs and enhances the flavors of whatever you combine it with, and adds creaminess to your smoothie.

Depositphotos

Wheat germ offers another way to add a punch of protein to your breakfast smoothie. Wheat germ is the embryo or kernel of the wheat. It’s a rich source of protein, fiber, unsaturated fat, vitamins E, B1, B2, B5 and B6, phosphorus, zinc, thiamine and magnesium. Wheat germ has natural antioxidants and helps prevent heart disease, cancer and aging. It also protects the muscles, blood, lungs and eyes, and helps to prevent blood clots. Wheat germ helps to strengthen your body’s immune system and increases your ability to cope with stress. It’s also a reliable source of natural fiber, which is essential to maintaining regular bowel functions and preventing constipation. Try these nutritious, vitamin-packed smoothie recipes to ensure you start your new year and a new day the healthy way!

Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator in a covered container overnight and shake well to mix contents. Makes 4 (8 ounce) glasses. FRUITY TOFU SMOOTHIE 1 cup soft tofu 1 banana, divided 1/2 cup soy milk or orange juice 1/2 cup plain or vanilla soy yogurt 1/2 cup strawberries or blueberries, fresh or frozen, divided 1/4 cup wheat germ 1 tablespoon honey or agave nectar 1. Blend the tofu, half the banana, soy milk or orange juice, yogurt, half the strawberries or blueberries and the wheat germ until fairly smooth. Growing up, I recall that my Grandma Ruth, a second-generation Swede, actually didn't work from a formal recipe. "A little bit of this, a lot of that," she'd say to me as I stood on a footstool by her side, carefully pouring milk into a wide bowl. A lot of "that" usually meant the melted butter that would blend smooth as silk into the batter. I later learned the basic techniques for flipping the pancakes from my dad. (Unlike the thicker American flapjack, a Swedish pancake is more like a French crepe, so flipping can be unwieldy at first.)

December 28, 2020

As traditional recipes poured out of family cookbooks over the holidays, I went on a quest for the "best" Swedish pancake recipe from my friends and their Swedish-American friends. I soon discovered that there are probably as many recipes as there are Swedish grandmothers — and grandfathers.

Flip Into New Year With Swedish Pancakes

Warwick: Long established full service car wash, great reputation, on busy high visibility road next to airport, $825,000

Happily, my family and I have continued the tradition of making Swedish pancakes topped with bright-red lingonberry preserves and a dusting of confectioners' sugar. A satisfying, easy meal for a lazy Saturday morning breakfast, or a casual weeknight supper. Here's my easy "best" recipe. Stir it up for your family and make it your own with a little of this ... maple syrup on top? Or that. How about some freshly sliced strawberries and a dollop of whipped cream?

SWEDISH PANCAKES cup flour teaspoon salt cups milk, or 1 1/2 cups milk and 1/2 cup half and half (optional) 3 eggs 1/4 cup butter, melted and cooled, plus butter for cooking. 1. In a medium bowl, combine all of the ingredients with a whisk until smooth. Do not overbeat. 2. For each pancake, lightly butter griddle or large skillet; heat over medium-high heat. When quite hot, pour 1/3 cup of the batter into skillet. Swirl it around so that it forms a thin 8- to 9-inch layer on the bottom of the pan. 3. Cook until the pancake is golden brown on the bottom (lift up a corner to check the color) and small bubbles are visible on the top. This happens quickly. Flip with a narrow spatula and lightly brown on the other side. 4. Set on a plate, and fold in half or quarters, if you wish. Serve hot with traditional lingonberry, strawberry or raspberry preserves. Top with a dusting of confectioners' sugar. Makes 12 pancakes. *** Find more family fun in Donna's book "Donna Erickson's Fabulous Funstuff for Families." 1 1/4 2

by Jennifer Coates Regular customer Ed strolls into the new “digs” of Fantastic Sam’s Cut & Color and begins his usual banter back and forth with stylist Cyndy who will soon be cutting his hair. He quickly realizes that, though the salon is unisex and serves both men and women, he is outnumbered by women, eight to one. He relishes the attention and takes full advantage of this rare captive audience. He is simply delightful and adds an infusion of life to the busy salon which seems to be only seating women at the hour of his arrival. Ed is just one of literally hundreds of customers who flock to this installation of Fantastic Sam’s for a good clean haircut or color. He is welcomed like family here because this is a salon of “regulars” who have specific stylists who they return to, time after time. With strictly-enforced COVID guidelines, appointments are now required where once walk-ins were the “norm”, but there is hardly ever a time when a stylist isn’t ready for any last-minute requests. Customers can make an appointment with one of the nine stylists at the salon, or take their chances on whoever is available. Either way, they can expect a quality cut or color every time. Though it may sound trite, Fantastic Sam’s Cut & Color on Tiogue Avenue in Coventry can truly be summed up in one word, “fantastic”! Guests who venture into this fullservice salon are immediately drawn into a fantastically welcoming, sparkling-clean, sunny and modern space that is full of energy and activity. During the shutdown in the

Regular customer Ed is happy to find there is a styling chair waiting just for him when he arrives for an appointment with stylist Cyndy on a busy Wednesday afternoon. Ed, who sometimes goes by “Rudolph Valentino”, lights up the room with his quick sense of humor which is equally matched by that of Cyndy. It’s a great day at Fantastic Sam’s in Coventry.

early months of 2020, the salon moved across the street into a newly-refurbished space. The black, red and white color theme, which is carried throughout the salon, is bold and bright. The stations are immaculate and sanitized between every customer – in fact, every measure is taken to make the guests feel safe and as germ-free as possible. Face coverings are required. Beyond the décor, a close-knit group of experienced and fantastically talented stylists are seen fussing over their clients ~ as invested in making them look their best as if they were family. According to longtime manager Cirise, diversity is important here. Long hair, short hair, textured hair,

smooth hair, wavy hair, straight hair. Men, women & children of all ages and walks of life are served here. All levels of styling are offered, from basic cuts to the trendy “fashion colors”, foils, perms, “spiral perms,” ombres, foils, and more. Fantastic Sam’s staff members adapt their skillset to meet the ever-changing expectations of their clients ~ and all this at extremely competitive pricing. Fantastic Sam’s Cut & Color is located at 1015 Tiogue Avenue. Hours are Monday ~ Wednesday, 9:00am - 7:00pm; Thurs. & Fri. 9:00am – 8:00pm, Saturday, 9:00am – 5:00pm & Sund, 10:00am – 4:00pm. OCEAN STATE PAINTING & PROPERTY MAINTENANCE • On Jan. 12, 1838, after his Mormon bank fails in the Panic of 1837, Joseph Smith flees Kirtland, Ohio, to avoid potential criminal prosecution by angry and disillusioned former believers. Smith claimed the angel Moroni had visited him in 1823 and told him he was destined to become a modern prophet of God. • On Jan. 13, 1968, in the midst of a plummeting music career, legendary country singer Johnny Cash arrives to play for inmates at California’s Folsom Prison. The concert and the subsequent live album launched him back onto the charts. • On Jan. 15, 1870, the first recorded use of a donkey to represent the Democratic Party appears in Harper’s Weekly, drawn by political illustrator Thomas Nast. Four years later, Nash originated the use of an elephant to symbolize the Republican Party in a Harper’s Weekly cartoon. • On Jan. 16, 1938, Benny Goodman brings jazz to Carnegie Hall, a notion so outlandish at the time that Goodman himself initially laughed off the idea. The concert at the citadel of American high culture sold out weeks in advance. • On Jan. 14, 1942, President Franklin Roosevelt issues Presidential Proclamation No. 2537, requiring aliens from World War II-enemy countries — Italy, Germany and Japan — to register with the Department of Justice. • On Jan. 17, 1950, 11 men steal more than $2 million ($22 million today) from the Brink’s Armored Car depot in Boston. It was the perfect crime —almost — as the culprits weren’t caught until January 1956, just days before the statute of limitations for the theft expired. • On Jan. 11, 1973, the owners of America’s 24 major league baseball teams vote to allow teams in the American League to use a “designated pinch-hitterâ€? that could bat for the pitcher, while still allowing the pitcher to stay in the game. Š 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

December 28, 2020

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A hectic period begins to wind down. Take time to draw some deep breaths and relax before getting into your next project. A long-absent family member makes contact. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You’re eager to move forward with a new challenge that suddenly dropped in your lap. But you’d be wise to take this one step at a time to allow new developments to come through. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’re almost ready to make a commitment. A lingering doubt or two, however, should be resolved before you move ahead. An associate could provide important answers. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Caution is still the watchword as you move closer toward a decision about a new situation. If you act too fast, you might miss some vital warning signs. Go slowly and stay alert. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your new goal looks promising, and your golden touch does much to enhance its prospects for success. In your private life, Cupid does his best to make your new relationship special. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) That impatient side of yours is looking to goad you into moving before you’re ready to take that big step. Stay calm and cool. Let things fall into place before you act.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Travel and career are strong in your aspect. Perhaps your job will take you to someplace exotic. Or you might be setting up meetings with potential clients or employers. Whatever it is, good luck. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Partnerships — personal or professional — which began before the new year take on new importance. They also reveal some previously hidden risks. So be warned. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your associates are firmly on your side, and that persistent problem that has caused you to delay some activities should soon be resolved to your satisfaction. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Favorable changes continue to dominate, and you should be responding positively as they emerge. Someone wants to become more involved in what you’re doing. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A friend wants to share a secret that could answer some questions you’ve wondered about for a long time. Meanwhile, travel aspects continue to be strong. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Stay on your new course despite so-called well-meaning efforts to discourage you. Rely on your deep sense of self-awareness to guide you to do what’s right for you. YOU BORN THIS WEEK: You have the capacity to meet challenges that others might find overwhelming, and turn them into successful ventures.

Welcome 2021!

Our family of four (2 boys ages 11 & 16) just moved to West Greenwich 2 weeks before Christmas from another state. My oldest son wanted to get gifts for us with his own money so I brought him to Walmart in Coventry a couple days before Christmas. While he was doing his own shopping, I did mine and we’d meet up in the front of the store when finished. When we meet after our purchases, he was so excited and couldn’t wait to tell me what happened; he ended up in line behind a woman with two carriages full items, yet he patiently waited his turn with his three items in hand. As the Cashier finished swiping his items, she told him the lady in front of him had left $40 to go towards his purchase. My son was in awe as this never happened to him before, didn’t understand it and why a stranger would do this. He paid the small cash difference to the Cashier and ran out to find the lady; he thanked her and asked why she did that for him and she simply replied “It’s the season to pay it forward and give unto others”. My son’s smile and the excitement in his eyes brought such happiness to me as well. I’ve taught my children to help those in need and give when able; and when this happened it was a very special feeling & valuable lesson learned for my son to understand how others feel when we give. Thank you and happy holidays and new year. Kristin
