CENTRAL COVENTRY FIRE DISTRICT

Get Informed – Your Fire District Needs You! Nearly 10 years ago, the residents of the Central Coventry Fire District spoke loudly about how they wanted their District run and how much they could afford to pay. With a supplemental tax increase of 16% - 20% on the horizon, your District needs to hear from you. Last year the General Assembly passed, and Governor Raimondo signed a bill that changes the way the District is supposed to pay firefighters for overtime. Firefighter activists specifically targeted the residents of the District with this unfunded mandate to undo the tax-saving changes made years prior. According to this law, the District is required to pay overtime to firefighters who are scheduled for duty (even if they away on vacations) above 42 hours. Previously, the District paid overtime only after 53 hours of actual on duty hours, just like most fire organizations in the country. The resulting expense in overtime will cost the District nearly $275,000. Furthermore, the District’s State pension contribution rate has increased over 100% in the last 6 years from 16% to 33%. In dollars, that is from $367,801 in 2015 to an expected $680,599 in 2021. These factors, along with a reduction of rescue runs because of COVID, have created a structural deficit for the District. There are only 2 ways to respond to a structural deficit: 1 – make structural changes, like closure of a station; change the department’s response protocols; reduce service; or, 2 – increase taxes to generate revenue. It is likely that the District will require a supplemental tax increase of between 16%20% this year to cover the structural deficit. The Board will be discussing options at its next meeting, and we urge you to attend. Due to COVID, we have to hold our meetings via Zoom, but these issues will impact all persons in the District.

Log in, call, or email info@ccfdri.com to get informed and participate in the District’s future. Next Zoom meeting: Thursday, January 21, 2021 at 6:00 PM. Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85706143179?pwd=NU54bGtOSWpxRlNvelhGNGsvdmRJZz09

Pasta e Piselli Our fastest soup — just 10 minutes to prepare, 15 minutes to cook. Cousin to the Italian favorite Pasta e Fagioli (pasta and beans), this is made with peas instead. Dust with freshly grated Parmesan for an irresistible touch. 2 cups (about 8 ounces) mixed pasta shapes or elbow macaroni 2 tablespoons olive oil 3 cloves garlic, crushed with side of chef ’s knife 2 cans (14½-ounce) chicken broth, or 3½ cups homemade chicken broth 1 can (14½-ounce) diced tomatoes 1/4 cup (packed) fresh basil leaves, coarsely chopped 1 package (10-ounce) frozen peas, thawed Grated Parmesan cheese (optional) 1. Cook pasta as label directs in boiling salted water; drain. 2. Meanwhile, in 4-quart saucepan or saucepot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add garlic; cook until golden, about 5 minutes. 3. Remove saucepan from heat. Then, carefully add chicken broth, tomatoes with their juice, basil and 1/2 cup water. Return to heat; heat to boiling. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 5 minutes; discard garlic. 4. Add peas and pasta; heat through. Serve soup with grated Parmesan cheese if you like. Remember, you have the right to decide where you receive your healthcare.

Technology has changed the world in numerous ways, including creating entirely new industries and a vast array of career options that didn’t exist as recently as two decades ago. In its CyberstatesTM report, CompTIA, which publishes a steady stream of new research on IT topics, recently shared some key findings that’s news for those who work in tech. • Around 11.8 million people are employed in tech in the Unites States, and 261,000 new jobs were added in the past year. • Software and web developers make up the largest and fastest-growing segment of tech jobs. • The estimated direct economic output of the tech industry equals $1.8 trillion. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts technology careers are on the rise, with expected growth of 12 percent between 2014 and 2024. Specific fields within the tech industry are expected to experience even stronger growth, as high as 27 percent. There’s never been a better time to work in tech, particularly for those who have a knack or affinity for computer operations and networks. Here’s a look at some of the promising tech careers, including some of the more lucrative, courtesy of U.S. News’ “Best Technology Jobs of 2019” report. These jobs boast low employment rates and high salaries. 5. Database administrator: A database administrator sets up databases. These highly trained individuals use specialized software to store and organize data. Some key roles include planning, installation, configuration, design, as well as migration. DBAs also will troubleshoot and enhance database security. Median pay is $87,020. 4. Information security analyst: Concerns about security breaches continue to grow as criminals become ever more savvy. Information security analysts find the best security solutions and carry out measures to protect a company’s networks and systems. The professionals maintain systems by updating software and recommending security updates to management. Median pay is $95,510.

3. IT manager: IT managers are in high demand thanks to increasingly digital workplaces. These individuals coordinate all computer-related activities for an organization. Some jobs include recommending software and hardware needs, securing networks, and searching for new technologies. Median salary is $139,220. 2. Computer systems analyst: A computer systems analyst helps organizations utilize computer technology efficiently and effectively. They make suggestions on new technology. Sometimes called systems architects, computer systems analysts often study existing computer systems and design more efficient options. Median salary is $88,270, lower than some other IT jobs, but there are 54,400 projected jobs in this area. 1. Software developer: A software developer has the highest rate of projected new jobs, and at a median salary of $101,790, it can be a secure career in the tech field. These developers write new code, fix software bugs, find solutions to outdated programs, and must be both creative and technical. Some developers may specialize in one area of computers or serve as generalists who write code for various types of software. No matter the position, working with tecnology involves finding creative solutions in a fast-paced, ever-growing environment.

I heard that actor Jeff Bridges was diagnosed with cancer. How is he doing? Is he done acting or will he continue while he fights the disease? — H.B. Jeff Bridges and his longtime wife, Susan, posted a very cute photo of themselves with their dog on Twitter, wishing everyone a Happy New Year. He had recently shaved his head and sported a red beret while wearing matching pajamas with Susan. In October, the 71-year-old actor was diagnosed with lymphoma and began treatment. He’s still working, at least as much as is permitted during the pandemic. His new project is the upcoming Hulu TV series “The Old Man, which is based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Perry. According to TV Guide, Bridges plays a “retired intelligence officer who becomes marked for death and is pulled into the world he left behind. It also stars John Lithgow (“The Crown) and Amy Brenneman (“Judging Amy). With a cast like that, it’s bound to be a hit, but no specific premiere date has been set. *** I saw a commercial for a new show that’s similar to “America’s Got Talent. I forget the name, but it had WWE star Cody Rhodes as one of the judges. Does this mean he’s done wrestling? — C.P. Cody Rhodes, a son of the legendary Dusty Rhodes, left the WWE in 2016 and later helped start the All Elite Wrestling league. He was still wrestling in the AEW in 2020, but now, at age 35, Cody’s body might be telling him to slow down. The new “Go-Big Show is part of TBS’ Thursday night lineup, and while it appears similar to NBC’s “America’s Got Talent, it’s more extreme and, as its name implies, big, with acts that involve monster trucks, alligator wrestlers, tightrope walkers and fire breathers. Joining Rhodes at the judges’ table are rapper Snoop Dogg, actress Rosario Dawson (“The Mandalorian) and singer Jennifer Nettles. It features a socially distant, drive-thru audience cheering on the competitors as they vie for a $100,000 prize.

Richard Lawrence, an unemployed house painter, shot at Jackson, but his gun misfired. A furious 67-year-old Jackson confronted his attacker, clubbing Lawrence several times with his walking cane. • On Jan. 29, 1845, Edgar Allan Poe’s famous poem “The Raven,â€? beginning “Once upon a midnight dreary,â€? is published in the New York Evening Mirror. • On Jan. 28, 1855, the Panama Railway, which carried thousands of unruly gold miners to California via the dense jungles of Central America, dispatches its first train across the Isthmus of Panama. Everett Alvarez Jr. spends his 2,000th day in captivity in Southeast Asia. First taken prisoner when his plane was shot down Aug. 5, 1964, during one of the first bombing raids over North Vietnam, he became the longest-held POW in U.S. history.

Q:

Where have I seen the actor who plays the male lead in the new sitcom “Bob Hearts Abishola? Was he a stand-up comedian? He looks very familiar. — Y.A. Billy Gardell plays Bob in “Bob Hearts Abishola, the CBS sitcom produced by the very successful Chuck Lorre (“Two and a Half Men, etc.), and he’s probably triggering some deja-vu because he starred for six seasons in another CBS sitcom, “Mike & Molly. Before his successful television career, he was a stand-up comedian from Pennsylvania. “Bob Hearts Abishola actually is not new. It’s in its second season, but has been heavily promoted in recent months. Gardell plays a successful business owner who falls in love with his nurse, Abishola, played by Nigerian-born Folake Olowofoyeku, who pursued her dream of being an actress after enrolling in the City College of New York. Thanksgiving Novena to

ST. JUDE

O Holy St. Jude Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ. Faithful intercessor of all who invoke this special patronage in time of need. To you I have recourse from the depth of my heart and humbly beg you, to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return, I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. Say three Our Fathers, three Hail Marys and three Glory Be’s. Publication must be promised. St Jude pray for us and all who invoke your aid. Amen. This novena has never been known to fail. It helped me. Thank you St. Jude for answering my prayers.

Coventry: Double-wide 2 bed, 2 full bath mobile, newer roof & flooring, two 3 season rooms, $132,000 Coventry: 1.54 acres of land zoned general business, consists of four adjoining lots, $350,000

Homeowners eagerly await the arrival of the warm weather so they can cast off the remnants of cabin fever and bask in the sunshine. However, as summer nears its dog days, the same sun homeowners once coveted can contribute to uncomfortable conditions in outdoor entertaining spaces. Meteorologists at WHAS11 in Kentucky took to their neighborhoods in July 2020 to test just how hot surfaces can get in the sun during peak daytime temperatures. Concrete sitting in the sun almost all day reached a temperature of 134.7 F, while the same concrete in the shade clocked in at just under 80 F. When air temperatures are around 90 F, unshaded concrete and asphalt can be 125 F and 140 F, respectively. While wood decking may not be as hot as asphalt and concrete, it still can get steamy underfoot. Homeowners who want to be able to enjoy their outdoor spaces in an array of temperatures can think about investing in shade solutions. Sun-blocking ideas like awnings, shade trees and large umbrellas can help people enjoy their yards all day long. • Canopy: A patio canopy is typically a freestanding unit that can be installed over a patio or a deck. Some people prefer to bolt it down so it will not be knocked over in windy conditions. The fabric on the canopy can be removed during the offseason, helping to improve its longevity.

• Awning: Awnings may be stationary or retractable. Many are installed directly onto a home and can cast shade on specific areas of outdoor entertaining spaces. • Shade sail: Similar to an awning but a bit less structurally rigid, shade sails are large pieces of triangular fabric installed over areas of a patio, pool or landscape, according to The Family Handyman. Shade sails are light and airy and can be customized. • Trees: A natural way to increase shade in a yard is to plant more shade trees. If sun glare is an issue all year long, and it’s not just the heat of the sun that is troublesome, think about planting evergreen trees. Deciduous cousins will drop their leaves in fall and only be effective during the warm weather. • Patio umbrellas: Many umbrellas start at around $25. Umbrellas can be paired with patio tables, while stationary cantilever umbrellas sit out of the way on their own heavy-duty stands. A cantilever umbrella tends to provide more shade than patio table umbrellas. • Curtains: Homeowners can block sunlight outdoors the way they do inside, offers MSN. Hang curtains from the sides of canopies or between posts on a deck to provide shade and cozy spaces. Shade is in high demand when the sun is hot. Options abound for making outdoor areas more comfortable.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Single Lambs looking for romance could find Cupid especially accommodating this week. Paired partners also find their relationships benefiting from the chubby cherub’s attention. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Keep your keen Bull’s eye focused on your target, and shake off any attempt to turn your attention elsewhere. You should get some news later in the week that might answer some questions. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your early enthusiasm for a project might have been somewhat premature. Although you feel positive about it, you might need more information in order to make an informed decision. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking on a new responsibility might seem like the politically correct thing to do. But even with the promise of support, was it the wisest? Consider reassessing your upcoming decision. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Apply yourself to completing your task despite all the distractions that might be interfering with your work. Then reward yourself with a weekend of fun shared with people who are close to you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A business agreement from the past might need to be looked at again. Use this unexpected development to check out other matters related to it. A weekend venture proves to be rewarding.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Don’t ignore that uneasy feeling about making a commitment. It could be a case of understandably cold feet, or a warning that something isn’t as right as it should be. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A colleague could be more supporting of one of your efforts. But it’s up to you to make the case for it, and that could mean opening up a secret or two, which might be a problem for you. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Expect some good news about a relative you’ve been worried about. But don’t expect the full story to be told — at least not yet. A workplace matter might face shifting priorities. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Despite some anxious moments, you could have good reason to be pleased with how things are turning out. An end-of-the-week call might hold some interesting information. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A long-overdue expression of appreciation could be offered soon. But admit it: You never really expected it would happen, right? Meanwhile, keep your weekend options open. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to dive right into a new challenge, whether it’s learning a computer app, or how to drive a stick shift, or making a new friend. Whatever it is, good luck. BORN THIS WEEK: You see the wisdom in honesty, and you help others appreciate your vision.

Like many others, I try different methods to avoid catching a cold or flu during the winter months. Despite my best efforts, I often get a little “under the weather” during the month of January. This year I’ve decided to work on ways to boost my immune system before the worst part of the cold and flu season hits. “One thing to remember is that simple diet choices can boost our immune system,” said Susan MillsGray, Nutrition and Health Education specialist with University of Missouri Extension. Here are a variety of ways to help your immune system to work at peak performance. — Get plenty of liquids to help prevent viruses and bacteria from taking up residence in your body. According to Dr. Riva Rahl of the Cooper Clinic in Dallas: “The mucus in your nose is actually one of the key physical barriers that keep germs out of your body. When you’re not well-hydrated, it dries up and doesn’t provide that barrier.” — Protein is a building block for a healthy immune system. Choose lean red meats, poultry and fish, dried beans and soy. You also can choose protein-rich plant sources with hearthealthy fat, like peanut butter and nuts. — Choose foods rich in vitamins C and E. These antioxidant-rich vitamins protect cells — including those of your immune system — from damage by toxins in the environment. Choose citrus fruits/juices, melons, mangoes, kiwi, peppers, tomatoes, berries, broccoli, cabbage, sweet/ white potatoes, winter squash, leafy

greens, almonds, hazelnuts, peanut butter, sunflower seeds, safflower oil, whole grains and fortified cereals several times a day. — Eat probiotic foods to help build up the good bacteria in the intestines. These bacteria play a role in helping fend off illnesses. Any fermented food is rich in this type of good bacteria, so choose yogurt, sauerkraut, tofu, brine-treated pickles and aged cheese at least daily. — Add a zinc-rich food to your daily diet to increase production of white blood cells in your body. Research shows this can reduce the number of days you’ll suffer from a cold. Foods rich in zinc include yogurt, lean red meat, poultry and fish, almonds, pumpkin seeds and fortified cereals.

Daily life was upended in March of 2020, when most of the world was first introduced to the novel coronavirus COVID-19. People from all walks of life were adversely affected by the pandemic, and certain industries, including travel and tourism, had an especially difficult time as the pandemic wore on. Tourism greatly affected Travel was largely restricted in early 2020, with some countries prohibiting tourism from travelers from critically impacted areas. As the second wave of the virus arrived in late 2020, many nations returned to full or partial lockdowns to combat virus transmission, further hurting the travel and tourism industry. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, the tourism industry accounted for 330 million jobs in 2019. Estimates now suggest that approximately 121 million of those jobs have been eliminated due to the pandemic. Countries whose economies relied primarily on tourism either continued to stay open to travelers or have reopened to make ends meet. Travel considerations When the weather becomes colder and inhospitable, people often seek out warmer climates. Though travel figures to decrease dramatically in the winter of 2020-21, there may be some tourists who are willing to leave home for the promise of beaches and sunny skies. As of December 2020, Mexico had no entry restrictions for Americans, apart from limiting land-border crossings. Visitors can get a temperature check on arrival and will be schooled in basic information about social distancing. John Spence, president of the tour company Scott Dunn USA, says Kenya is a relatively safe East African destination to visit, and the country has been transparent about its reopening conditions. Costa Rica and Caribbean islands have been cautiously reopening to tourists, starting with nations reporting lower infection levels. Anyone who chooses to travel is strongly urged to quarantine for at least 14 days upon returning home.

Home modifications Individuals who prefer to stay close to home may want to invest their vacation dollars into home renovations that can simulate getting away. While they may not serve as a substitute for a sandy beach, home renovations may make riding out the colder temps a bit more tolerable. Here are some ideas to make staycations more enjoyable. • Improve lighting. Increase bright, indoor lighting to simulate longer hours of sunlight. • Invest in a hot tub. You may not be able to swim outdoors in the winter, but sitting in a hot tub can chase away the chill and prove very relaxing. • Renovate a bathroom. Create a spa resort experience with a bathroom overhaul that includes multi-jet shower heads, towel warmers and ultra-plush linens. • Join a gym or indoor pool club. A chance to swim even when it is cold outside can be refreshing and make for great exercise. • Visit an indoor water park. Indoor water parks can include wave pools that recreate the conditions of beach resorts, but all in a climate-controlled environment. It’s the time of year to escape the cold, and people are weighing their options as they try to decide if they will travel or stay home this winter.
