BLESSED VIRGIN

(Never known to fail). O Most Beautiful Flower of Mt. Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the sea, help me and show me here in, you are my mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times.) Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days. You must publish it and it will be granted to you. KAM

“JAZZ” Jazz was a feral kitten that we trapped, had neutered and then returned to the outdoors ten years ago. However, she had other plans and stayed! She loves us on her terms. We have awoken to find her sleeping on us! Other times, she can be found at the top of the cat tree, under the bed or in an open suitcase. We love her! 1615 Pontiac Avenue - Cranston - RI - 02920 - 401/463-3010

• On March 13, 1836, Texan Gen. Sam Houston begins a series of strategic retreats to buy time to train his ill-prepared army, which consisted of 374 poorly equipped men. A month later, his newly trained army won a stunning victory against Mexico’s Santa Anna. • On March 10, 1902, the U.S. Court of Appeals rules that despite his claims, Thomas Edison did not invent the movie camera. It did admit that Edison invented the sprocket system that moved perforated film through the camera. • On March 8, 1917, the February Revolution begins when riots and strikes over the scarcity of food erupt in Petrograd. A week later, centuries of czarist rule in Russia ended with the abdication of Nicholas II. Vladimir Lenin returned home and took control of the Russian Revolution. • On March 11, 1942, U.S. Gen. Douglas MacArthur abandons the island of Corregidor under orders from President Franklin Roosevelt. Left behind were 90,000 American and Filipino troops, who would soon succumb to the Japanese offensive. Only onethird of those left behind survived to see MacAuthur’s return in January 1945. • On March 12, 1969, the London drug squad appears at house of Beatle George Harrison and his wife Pattie Boyd with a warrant and drug-sniffing canines. Sgt. Pilcher, the man behind the raid, was convicted of planting drugs in other cases and went to jail in 1972. • On March 9, 1979, Major League Baseball teams are ordered by the MLB commissioner to allow equal access to all reporters. The order came after Sports Illustrated reporter Melissa Ludtke’s successful lawsuit for refusing her access to clubhouses at Yankee Stadium during the 1977 World Series. • On March 7, 1988, representatives of the Writers Guild of America called a strike for all the union’s members. The five-month walkout was estimated to cost Hollywood some $500 million, as many viewers began watching cable channels.

ning Tatum took two years off and now is back with a vengeance. In addition to producing, directing and starring in the just released “Dog” and “The Lost City,” with Sandra Bullock, Daniel Radcliffe and Brad Pitt (March 25), he’s headed to London to shoot his third “Magic Mike.” Steven Soderbergh, director of the original “Magic Mike,” was set to launch a Broadway musical of the film, but after seeing the “Magic Mike” live show in London (there’s also one in Vegas), he decided they had to do a third installment instead. Tatum admits, “Didn’t want to, we chewed all the meat off that — no pun intended. ‘Magic Mike’s Last Dance’ will feature the sickest dancing we can create, a full dance-icle and The Super Bowl of stripper movies. I’m going to dance as hard as I’ve danced in any movie other than ‘Hail Caesar.’ Less character, more dancing, and we’ll have a strong female protagonist as the new lead. We’ve never done the traditional love story, and this isn’t a traditional love story!” *** Jamie Dornan and Benedict Cumberbatch, both Oscar contenders, are very busy. Dornan follows “Belfast” with Netflix’s spy thriller “Heart of Stone,” opposite Gal Gadot. Cumberbatch, in addition to the upcoming “Doctor Strange” (out May 6), joins Oscar-winner Laura Dern in “Morning,” set in a society that no longer needs to sleep thanks to a new pill and artificial sun. Dern will be back in “Jurassic World Dominion” (June 10), then “The Son,” with Hugh Jackman and Anthony Hopkins (which wrapped in October). *** Grouch Marx, one of the immortal Marx Brothers, along with Harpo, Chico and Zeppo, made classic films like “Duck Soup,” “A Night at the

Channing Tatum in “Magic Mike” Opera” and “Animal Crackers” (three of my favorites out of 13) from 19291952. Groucho hosted the TV show “You Bet Your Life” from 1950-1961. In 1971 he hired Erin Fleming as his secretary, and by 1973 she’d become his manager and allegedly his girlfriend. I personally used to see them at events, usually arguing profusely. In 1977 Groucho died, at 86, and his children sued Erin Fleming for embezzling $472,000, which she was court-ordered to return to his estate. She also was accused of mental and physical abuse. She died in 2003 at 61. Oscar-winning actor Geoffrey Rush will portray Groucho in “Raised Eyebrows,” which is set between 19731977, with Sienna Miller as Erin Fleming, showing how their power struggle created a comedy of horrors. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve read that pets can keep seniors healthy, through reducing stress, etc. How does that work? — Joel P., Fort Myers, Fla. DEAR JOEL: Researchers have found that seniors who own pets have a reduced rate of stress-related ailments, so they’ve theorized that having an animal companion helps seniors feel less alone and somewhat empowered as they care for a cat, dog, fish or other pet. The unconditional love and affection that pets provide can help their owners feel needed and important, and can help to enhance their quality of life. So, the simple act of caring for a pet can create a longer, happier life for many people. But there are more benefits to pet ownership. Owners are more likely to interact with other animal lovers. They tend to exercise more than pet-less people — especially dog owners, who must take their pooches for frequent walks. Of course, if a senior doesn’t want a dog or cat, the idea shouldn’t be pushed. Owners must be able to care for, walk and feed their pets, and provide training and activities. Not everyone can meet these requirements. There also are financial considerations, such as regular veterinary care, food and medicine. An alternative to owning a pet is to visit one (or have one visit) occasionally. There are organizations across the United States that sponsor pet visits for seniors who love animals but cannot care for one full-time. These visits help provide some of the health benefits of pet ownership to those who otherwise would not receive them. If nothing else, take time out to say hello to the neighbor’s dog, or spend time with relatives and their pets. They’ll love the attention, and you’ll love the stress relief that pets can provide. Shawn Kirkpatrick, 55, of Coventry and formerly of Coconut Creek, FL, passed away on Monday, February 21, 2022, surrounded by the comfort and care of his loving wife and mother at his home in Coventry. He was the dear and devoted husband to Kathleen (LaMontagne) Kirkpatrick, of Coventry, who he married on July 17, 2017. Born on January 19, 1967, in North Kingstown, Shawn was the only child to Irene Kirkpatrick Robison of Coventry and the late James B. Robison. He grew up in Coventry and was a student at Fr. John V. Doyle School at Saints John and Paul Church until the age of 14. He then entered high school, where he attended and graduated from Coventry High School with the Class of 1986. Shawn was a hard worker and took pride in a job well done. He worked as a Machinist at Astro-Med and working as an assistant to his friend who owns “Restaurant Helpers”. While residing in Florida, he was the assistant to the owner of a local laundromat and spent time employed as a Band Booking Manager at local night clubs. A man who was instantly likable, Shawn was enjoyed by all who were gifted with his presence. He was a gentle soul who took great satisfaction in helping others while expecting nothing in return. In his spare time, Shawn was an avid sports fan, with his favorite team being the Las Vegas (formerly Oakland) Raiders and the Boston Red Sox. In his younger years, he rode dirt bikes. He had a passion for music and was gifted with the ability to play guitar. Shawn received much of his musical inspiration from his favorite bands, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, AC/DC, Metallica, and many more. He loved nature and had a soft spot in his heart for animals. Above all, he was most happy when he was in the presence of and making memories with his treasured family. In addition to his wife and mother, Shawn is survived by his step-children: Amanda Wood of North Charleston, SC and Zachary Wood of Providence; his late aunt: Joyce Sollars; and countless friends and extended family members. • “Snow will better slide off a shovel that has been sprayed with furniture polish.” — T.L. in Minnesota • Here’s an old tip, but a good one: Before going away on vacation, put a couple of ice cubes in a plastic baggie, and set it at the front of the freezer. When you return, if there is any evidence of melting, you will know you lost power while you were gone. If the bag is one big, flat cube, you lost power long enough to suspect all your refrigerator items of being spoiled. • To temporarily get a winter frost effect on a window, use this fun recipe: Dissolve 4 to 6 tablespoons of Epsom salts in a beer. When the salt is dissolved, dip a clean rag in the mixture and wipe it on your windowpane. As it dries, crystals will form, creating a frost effect. This is a great solution for a window you don’t want to be clear but also don’t want to permanently alter. The effect washes off with soap and water. • “If you get a residue inside your coffee cups when they go through the dishwasher, it might be time to give your machine a once-over. In the meantime, spray the insides of the coffee cups with a bleach-based cleaner like 409 just before your turn it on. Several national sausage brands offer andouille, so it shouldn't be hard to find. If you can't find any, or prefer a milder sausage, substitute kielbasa or another smoked sausage. Here is where I break from tradition. Customarily, the rice is cooked in the stew. I cook my rice separately because this recipe makes a good amount and there are usually leftovers. If the rice holds in the stew, it absorbs all that delicious liquid and gets mushy. It's still delicious, but not as visually appealing. I also use a frozen pepper and onion blend because it's convenient and costs less.

Having a Total Knee Replacement in the Next 2 Months? 3 essential tips to speed your recovery and keep you out of the nursing home! Have you gotten to the point where you’ve had it with your knee pain? Have simple activities like going for a walk or going up and down your stairs become excruciating? If you’ve reached this stage with your knee pain, a Total Knee Replacement (TKR) may be just what you need. For about 90% of people, this type of surgery is very effective at dramatically reducing their pain, and most of them return to the activities they enjoy after completing their rehab. Sounds great, right? But like most major surgeries, a portion of people will experience complications. The most common complication following a TKR is what we refer to as “Stiff Knee Syndrome” (or in medical terms “arthrofibrosis”). Following surgery, scar tissue can build around the knee. People who experience this condition end up with a permanent loss of either bending or straightening their surgical knee, which is associated with long-term pain. The good news about Stiff Knee Syndrome is this: for many people it’s avoidable. While there are factors outside your control, such as your body’s tendency to lay down excess scar tissue, there is one extremely important factor that you can control: the condition of your knee heading into surgery. Most people don’t tend to think about what they

JESSICA L. PAPA, PT, DPT oWner oF arancia PHYSicaL tHeraPY should be doing heading into their TKR surgery. Instead, they’re focused on what will happen during and after surgery, which is understandable. However, a study published by the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery in 2014 found a 29% reduction in post-operative costs for those people who participated in “pre-hab” prior to TKR surgery. These same people had significantly shorter length of stays in the hospital, and fewer of them needed to go to a skilled nursing facility. If you’re planning on having a total knee replacement in the next 2 months, now is the ideal time for you to start getting your knee ready for a speedy recovery! Here are 3 essential tips that will help you cut down your rehab time/cost and help you avoid stiff knee syndrome: 1. Improve your knee flexibility as much as possible. One of the hardest things to accomplish after TKR surgery is getting your knee to fully bend and straighten. The more flexibility (range of motion) you

have prior to surgery, the easier it will be to gain full motion during rehab. 2. Increase your quadriceps muscle strength. Your “quad” muscles take a real beating during TKR surgery and can be difficult to activate during rehab. However, if you have good control of your quad muscles before heading into surgery, you’ll have a much easier time getting them to activate following surgery. This will help you become more active sooner. 3. Keep Active! If walking is too painful prior to surgery, consider either exercising in a pool or riding a stationary bike. You’re going to want as much strength and flexibility in your knees and hips during your post-op phase, which will again make your recovery quicker and less painful. Having a TKR is a major surgery and typically requires 3-6 months of rehabilitation and physical therapy. So if you’ve decided you’re ready for this surgery, start improving your recovery right now by following the 3 tips outlined above. Good luck!

SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE REMINDER

Invisible, Odorless…but Deadly Staying Healthy Vincent Varamo,

by Do

If you are like me, you enjoy all the wonderful things that winter brings, sledding, building snow persons, skiing, drinking hot cocoa, etc. There is one thing that we really don’t take into consideration when cold weather presents itself – carbon monoxide. The human body is an incredible thing and can endure great stress through the winter, however, this may come as a shock to most of you, the body is unable to endure extremes of temperature for extended periods of time. A solution to the inconvenience of the cold is necessary, and that comes in the form of preventing heat loss (ie clothing, gloves) and heating the environment in which we are present (furnace, radiator, gas heater). Unfortunately, heating our environment can lead to unintended exposure to a very deadly toxin: carbon monoxide. What is carbon monoxide (CO) exactly? It is a gas that is invisible and odorless to humans. This is not to be confused with hydrogen sulfide, a deadly gas that smells like rotten eggs. Carbon monoxide is a byproduct of incomplete fuel combustion and is often emitted from household items such as vehicle exhaust, ovens, inadequately serviced home furnaces, space heaters, and small gas engines that you find in-home generators, snowblowers, and lawnmowers. In studies, people are most likely to have their unintended CO exposure while at home. Why is carbon monoxide so deadly? Hemoglobin is the molecular structure in our red blood cells that carries oxygen molecules. When we breathe in carbon monoxide they attach to the hemoglobin just like oxygen does. Unlike oxygen, however, carbon monoxide provides no benefit to our body’s tissues. In addition to this, the carbon monoxide molecules essentially “stay put” and do not let oxygen reattach to the hemoglobin. This leads to our red blood cells carrying less oxygen to our tissues (brain, heart, muscles, etc.). How long can you hold your breath? It’s a bit more complicated than this hypothetical question, but you get the idea: our body needs a constant supply of oxygen for survival. Carbon monoxide exposures account for tens of thousands of Emergency Department visits annually, with thousands being hospitalized for significant exposures. Persons under the age of 44 make up the majority of these visits, but older patients make up larger percentiles of persons requiring admission to the hospital. We are at an increased risk of its exposure here in New England, as persons that live in colder parts of the country often have higher risk activities that lead to exposure. What can I do to prevent CO exposure to myself and my family? • Step number one is to ensure you have working carbon monoxide detectors on every floor of your home. Check each year that they are in working condition. These can be picked up at hardware stores anywhere. • Having your home heating system serviced annually if they utilize natural gas, coal, or oil/fuel. According to the CDC, these account for the 2nd greatest number of unintended CO exposures. • NEVER run an internal combustion car in your garage with the door closed. Keep in mind that even with the garage doors open fumes including CO may still enter your home. • Do not place your fuel combustion generators in your garage or abutting your home, regardless of whether you have the garage door open or not. Per the CDC statistics, fuel-burning generators are the number one reason for unintended CO exposures. Consumer Report recommends always placing your generator 20 feet or more from your home, with the exhaust facing away from the home. • Ensure your chimney is free of buildup or debris. • NEVER use a fuel-burning grill indoors for cooking, and do not use your oven for heating your home. What symptoms could I have if I have a carbon monoxide exposure? They can be vague, but may include: • Headache, dizziness, confusion

• Nausea, vomiting • Rapid heart rate, chest pain, shortness of breath • In severe exposures you can, unfortunately, have a heart attack, seizure, coma, or even die • Some persons may exhibit “cherry red” lips, but this is not a common finding, nor is it necessary for diagnosis What should I do if I suspect a carbon monoxide environment is present or my CO detector is going off? • Gather all family members in your home (including pets), leave your home and IMMEDIATELY CALL 911. • Pets, lending to their smaller body size, as well as children will often have symptoms before adults, but this is not foolproof. • Your local Fire Department with evaluating the home (or business) for CO elevations utilizing specialized equipment. If your family has had an exposure, they may recommend evaluation at your nearest Emergency Department. What do the Emergency Medical Services team and the Emergency Department do to treat CO exposure? • Whether suspected or a confirmed exposure we often start with supplemental oxygen therapy, ie nonrebreather oxygen mask. Saturating your blood with supplemental oxygen will help displace the carbon monoxide molecules off of the hemoglobin faster, allowing your red blood cells to carry oxygen again to your body’s tissues. • We may check blood work, including a test where we can see what the actual saturation of carbon monoxide is in your blood. Other tests we may perform look for evidence of organ damage as a result of a lack of oxygen reaching our tissues. We may also perform an ECG of your heart if you are having any signs or symptoms the CO exposure is affecting your heart. • If you are very ill, we may consider a therapy called Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. This treatment involves you sitting in a comfortable chamber where pressure is increased around you, thus speeding the CO molecules’ displacement even faster. Many cases will not require this therapy. Fortunately, there is one treatment center in Rhode Island: Kent Hospital. Kent Wound Recovery and Hyperbaric Medicine program has been in place for over a decade now and is the only emergent hyperbaric program in Rhode Island. In fact, there are only 2 emergent hyperbaric medicine treatment centers in all of New England, the other being Mass Eye and Ear in Boston. Both Kent and Mass Eye and Ear take turns for emergent hyperbaric coverage for the whole of New England. In conclusion, carbon monoxide is a deadly gas that we most often encounter at home. Our lifestyle in the Northeast United States often puts us at an increased risk of exposure. It is for this reason that we must be aware of the dangers it possesses to us and our family. Fortunately, exposure is often preventable if we follow the well-established safety guidelines (CDC). Stay safe out there this winter!

Here's a creative way to get sibling involved with baby.

King Features Weekly Service

Thurs. 3/3

What's one of the first things you do after your baby is born? I mean, after checking to see what sex it is. You look for the first smile, don't you? You hold the baby up to the mirror, and you point and coo and tweet, trying to get him to laugh. Of course, it takes some time, but soon it happens. The baby smiles! Life's first giggles. From then on, family life is filled with keeping a watch for these milestones. But the older sibling in the family is growing, too. Why not write a simple book about it? What's the same? What's different? Your preschooler or primary-school child will gain a better sense of accomplishments and appreciate the baby steps we take as we learn and grow. First, have a mini-interview with the older sibling to talk about his skills. Can he count to 10? Does he sleep in a regular bed? Can he hop? Jot down what he has to say, then put on your "publishing hat." On the top of a sheet of construction paper, use markers or print on your computer a line such as "MY BABY SISTER ..." Finish the sentence with a fact noted earlier by your older child, such as "My baby sister crawls." At the bottom of the page, print in large letters a corresponding fact about the older sibling: "I can jump and skip!"

Other possibilities: "My baby sister has one tooth. I have lots of teeth." "My baby sister eats rice cereal and mashed bananas. I eat hamburgers." "My baby sister uses a bottle. I use a cup." End on a page where you note something the two kids have in common, such as "My baby sister smiles. I smile too," or "My baby brother likes his blankie. I like my blankie too!"

Whirligigs Whirligigs were invented centuries ago. They are both toys and tools, indicators of wind direction and the weather. Sources disagree on where the first were made; it was probably in China about 400 B.C. or by Native Americans about 550 B.C. The whirligig must have a spinning part and a base and many were made in fanciful shapes. The oldest known pictures of a whirligig were in tapestries made in medieval times. There are many names and many shapes of whirligigs. Old sources call them pinwheels, gee-haws, whirlyjigs or whirlys. Vintage examples have waving arms, flags, angels’ wings, a man chopping wood, horses running and much more. They are also popular children’s toys or garden ornaments. A political whirligig was sold by Garth’s Auctions in Ohio a few years ago. It is a figure of President Theodore Roosevelt with a top hat and monocle riding on a penny farthing cycle. Roosevelt served from 1901 to 1909, so it must have been made after 1901. He is holding a red counterbalance vane that turns the bike with the wind. The handmade whirligig sold at Garth’s for $865. *** I believe I have a pair of Apache wedding moccasins. Apache Indians killed my great-grandfather in Bisbee, Arizona, in 1885. He was the deputy sheriff. His gravestone reads, “Killed by Apache Indians.” I’d like to find the appropriate museum or collector that would be interested in them. Indian moccasins can sell for several hundred dollars. Value depends on decoration, rarity and condition. Any information you have about the moccasins and how they were obtained adds provenance. Several museums, including some in Arizona, have collections of Native American items. Search the internet to find them. Those near the area where your great-grandfather lived might be interested in the connection to the local legend. If you want to sell the

SAY YOU SAW IT IN THE REMINDER

The Miracle Prayer

HEY, RHODE ISLAND!

In order to stay up to date on your COVID-19 vaccines

Dear Heart of Jesus: In the past, I have asked many favors. This time, I ask you this very special one. Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes, it will become your favor, not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and your favor will be granted no matter how impossible. Thank you also to the Divine Mercy.

If you are an older woman who wants beautiful hair, it’s important to learn the best hair color ideas for women over 60 so you can look and feel your best. Regardless of how long you have been seeing hints of gray in your hair. Even though gray hair can be resistant to color because there is no pigment in the hair itself, and the hair is coarser than it was before it went gray achieving the perfect color is still possible if you follow a few simple rules. A good rule of thumb when con-

sidering hair color is to go with a lighter, more natural color. This is beneficial for two reasons. First, it will allow for a more natural look when you first color and when it begins growing out. Secondly, a lighter color will give a softer look that helps reduce that harsh look you can get with too dark of hair. Lighter gives a softer more natural look. You need to consider your skin tone when choosing a hair color. For example, if you have cool or light skin tones you want to stay

away from warm hair colors like a copper auburn. If you have darker skin tone with an olive undertone, warmer colors will look amazing on you. If your gray has a yellow tint to it, you can tone the gray to a more flattering shade. Yellow tint in gray hair can be caused by minerals in the water or medication. You may also see yellow-tinted gray if you were a natural redhead. It is very easy to eliminate the yellow tint in gray hair. Simply applying a violet-based toner to the hair will eliminate the yellowing for up to six weeks below isn’t how often you wash your hair, type of water you have and products you use. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The adventurous Aries won’t be disappointed with taking on a new challenge, despite some initial misgivings. Look for this move to open other opportunities down the line. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Let that beautiful Bovine smile not only put you at ease, but also show that you’re ready, willing and more than able to confound the naysayers around you. A new admirer has important news. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be careful how you handle a relationship that you’re hoping to save. You already have the facts on your side. Avoid weakening your position by embellishing it with unnecessary dramatics. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking definitive stands isn’t easy for the often-wavering Moon Child. But you not only need to stay with your decision, but also to reassure others it was the right thing to do. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As a proud Lion, you’re right to be upset about those who might be lying about you to others. But the best revenge is proving them wrong by succeeding at what you set out to do. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22). Caution is still advised before making a financial commitment to a “promising” project. Look for the

facts behind the fluff. Devote the weekend to loved ones. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A Taurus offers comfort and advice as you deal with an upsetting event. Use this as a learning experience that will help you avoid similar problems in the future. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A romantic situation creates some chaos for single Scorpions. But it’s well worth the effort to work things out. A trusted friend can offer some helpful advice. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Expect to make new friends as your social circle expands. Also, remember to tell that family member how proud you are of his or her achievements. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19). New ventures continue to be favored. And with your self-confidence rising all the time, you’ll want to see how well you can do with a new challenge. So, go to it. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This is a good time for the usually serious-minded Aquarian to let loose and enjoy some fun times. Expect to get good news about a workplace issue. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Changed plans might upset some people, but your needs should be respected. Offer explanations when necessary. But don’t let yourself be talked into changing your decisions. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for bringing people together. You would make a fine judge or counselor. © 2022 King Features Syndicate, Inc.

Name the song that contains this lyric: “When I was a young man and never been kissed, I got to thinkin’ over how much I had missed.” Answers 1. “I Never Had It So Good,” in 1980. Bell continued to perform with The Drells now and then for the next two decades. 2. The Four Aims. They later called themselves The Four Tops because they didn’t want to be confused with the Ames Brothers. 3. Steve Winwood, in 1986. The song also netted two Grammys in 1987, beating Whitney Houston’s “Greatest Love of All” for Record of the Year. 4. Dire Straits, in 1985. 5. “Kisses Sweeter Than Wine,” by The Weavers in 1951.
