How to practice social distancing during a pandemic As COVID-19 continued to spread across the world, it quickly became evident that the public would have to take drastic measures to slow the transmission. In addition to practicing generalized sanitation and good hygiene, people in some of the hardest-hit clusters were advised to take additional, more aggressive measures. Quarantines and travel restrictions were implemented, and the term “social distancing” became a buzzword. Social distancing involves people keeping a physical distance from each other during disease outbreaks in order to slow transmission rates. Social distancing also is employed to lessen the impact of the disease on the medical care system, which quickly can become overwhelmed with a high number of cases presenting in a short period of time. In best-case scenarios, social distancing also may enable a few people to avoid infection until a vaccine is available. So how can people socially distance themselves? Here are some of the recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and other leading health groups. • Opt out of group events. Steer clear of events, whether meetings, sports games, conferences, and other gatherings where large amounts of people congregate together. • Stick to non-contact greetings. Avoid hugs, kisses and handshakes. Substitute a smile, a wave or a bumping of elbows, instead. • Practice remote learning. Students who attend large schools, such as high schools, universities and colleges, can continue their studies via remote learning and virtual classes instead of gathering in classrooms. • Work from home. Many companies are now equipped to allow employees to work from

Social distancing protocols encourage people to avoid crowds, such as those at concerts and sporting events.
home all the time or a portion of the time. Businesses can encourage employees to stay home and utilize the internet to get their work done. • Stagger commute times. Commuters in urban areas can consider staggering work hours so that they help curb crowds on public transportation. • Alter shopping schedules. Try to visit stores in the early morning or late at night when they are less likely to be crowded. • Make changes in worship practices. Celebrants may have to make modifications to the way they worship. The Catholic Diocese of Trenton, NJ, recently advised all diocesan churches to halt the distribution of the most precious blood (wine) from communal chalices; encouraged clergy and eucharistic ministers to sanitize their hands before distributing the eucharist; and parishioners to avoid contact during the sign of peace. Common sense is key to stall disease transmission, and social distancing can be an important public health measure.

Here’s how:
1. Choose an empty container, cup or jar as the prop for your spill. For example, an empty juice box, a coffee mug or a mustard jar works well. Wash it thoroughly. 2. In a small paper cup, stir food coloring (for translucent spills) or acrylic paint (for opaque spills) into 1/2 cup of white household glue. Or, if you have a wide-mouth prop, combine directly in it. When adding the paint or food coloring, try to imitate the color of the prod-
“spill” from the plastic wrap or paper. Check to make sure it is dry underneath. You don’t want a real spill on your hands! Finally, it’s time place your fake spill in the perfect spot to surprise your friends, family, or even a teacher on Wednesday, April 1. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. U.N. Declares 2020 As The International Year Of Plant Health (NAPS)—Can you imagine a world without fruit or flowers? Without farms or forests? It sounds extreme, but it could happen. Plants are under attack and the culprit is invasive pests. Some are so small, you can’t see them with your eyes. But they are there, and it’s time that everyone takes notice. That’s why the United Nations (U.N.) has declared 2020 as the International Year of Plant Health. It’s calling on individuals, organizations, industries, scientists and governments at all levels to work together to protect plants against the introduction and spread of invasive pests. But then a creepy masked killer starts slinking around campus, targeting the ladies. Unfortunately for him, sisters are doing it for themselves these days, so instead of complaining to a big, strong man, the gals go on the offensive. It’s a great idea to turn the stalker trope on its ear, but there wasn’t enough suspense to hold my attention. Director Sophia Takal kept it slasher lite, which didn’t help either.

“A mess is the sign of a good time” is one of my mantras in life. That is, as in disorder after a party or craft project. But spills? Not that kind of mess. Grape juice on white carpet, chocolate milk on a child’s party dress, coffee spilled on my lap during a flight. No one likes to accidentally spill or be spilled on. Except on April Fool’s Day! This fun caper of placing “fake” spills around the house, office or school, fools, surprises and, above all, creates spontaneous laughter. We all know, you can’t have too much of that in your life! Fool friends and family into thinking that ketchup really spilled on the kitchen floor, or that fingernail polish is dripping down the side of an upholstered chair. The ingredients are basic for this clean “messy” prank: household glue, acrylic paint and props appropriate to enhance the spill.

If you stirred the glue mixture in the prop, slowly pour it out and set the prop on its side next to the spill. Healthy Plants = Human Survival Plants are the foundation of all life on Earth. They make the oxygen we breathe and give us 80 percent of the food we eat. They sustain our livestock, provide habitat for wildlife and help our world to thrive. And plants add beauty and joy to people’s lives. According to the U.N., invasive pests destroy up to 40 percent of food crops globally and cause $220 billion in trade losses each year. This trade, worth nearly $1.7 trillion annually, has become crucial for human survival and economic growth in rural areas. To feed the world’s growing population, the U.N. estimates that agricultural production must increase by about 60 percent by 2050. That means we must do everything we can now to protect plant health from destructive invasive pests. What You Can Do The good news is that there are simple steps anyone can take to protect plants. It just takes one person to make a difference. For example, a hospital groundskeeper in Boston was the first to notice a strange-looking, dime-sized hole in a tree. Her call provided an early warning and jump-started the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) control effort, which quickly elim-
inated the destructive Asian longhorned beetle from that city.
Here are ways you can help: • Look for and report unusual signs of pests or diseases in trees and plants. • Don’t move untreated firewood. Instead, buy heat-treated firewood or responsibly gather wood where you will burn it to ensure tree-killing beetles hiding inside can’t spread to new areas. • When returning from international travel, always declare any food, plants or other agricultural items to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, so its experts can ensure they are pest-free. • Before buying seeds or plants online from other countries, contact USDA to find out if the items need to be inspected and certified as pest-free or meet other conditions before you can legally bring them into this country.
Learn More Locate a USDA office and find more tips on www.HungryPests.com, which describes invasive pests that people can accidentally spread and how to help prevent it. You can also join the conversation and get the latest updates at #PlantHealth and #IYPH2020 on social media.

Spring Into Asparagus During a visit to Germany, I was introduced to all things asparagus. Nothing says spring is here in Germany like a beautiful bunch of crisp, white asparagus, or as they call it, Spargel! The white variety of asparagus is harvested in Germany from about mid-April to June 24, which is known as St. John the Baptist Day. Rich in nutrients and very low in calories, asparagus has become a culinary status symbol for many Germans. According to the website, germanfood.org, it takes three years for an asparagus plant to produce its first tip. For white asparagus, soil is piled into knee-high banks, which give the fields their characteristic appearance. White asparagus grows best in sandy soil surrounded by mounds of earth, which protects the slender stalks from sunlight exposure and keeps them from turning green. This also affects the subtle flavor of the vegetable. From Baden-Wurttemberg to Brandenburg, certain rural areas in Germany take special pride in being prime asparagus growing regions. Four states are even home to scenic “Asparagus Routes,” which have created an asparagus tasting tourism. Green varieties of asparagus are more popular in America and are available year-round. Asparagus is easy to select and to prepare and comes in a variety of vibrant colors, including green, violet, purple and white. Asparagus also grows wild and is commercially available fresh, frozen and canned. Various types and colors of asparagus can be used without any noticeable difference in the taste, so mix and match colors and sizes for visual interest.
Asparagus should be crisp and firm, not limp or wrinkled, with tightly closed tips. Dull colors and ridges in the stems are an indication of a lack of freshness. The stalks should not be limp or dry at the cut and of uniform thickness. If you’re planning to use the asparagus on the same day, rinse it under cool water, pat the stalks dry with a paper towel. Smaller stalks can be broken or cut at the point where the stem naturally snaps. Peeling the end of thicker stalks with a paring knife or a vegetable peeler removes any woody stems and can be done up to two hours before cooking. Place the prepared asparagus in a plastic bag in the refrigerator to stay crisp until ready to cook. Fresh asparagus should never be washed or soaked before storing. If

the asparagus is bound with a rubber band, remove it, as it will pinch and bruise the stalks. Asparagus can be stored for up to two days if the stalks are trimmed and placed upright in a jar with about an inch of water in the bottom. Cover the asparagus with a plastic bag and store the spears in the refrigerator. Asparagus is also a nutritional powerhouse. One half-cup of cooked asparagus contains significant amounts of folic acid, vitamin C, potassium and beta-carotene. It’s also a heart-healthy food, and a natural diuretic. This versatile vegetable works well as a room-temperature appetizer, blended into a soup, as the main ingredient in a colorful salad, a flavorful side dish or as part of a main course like my recipe for Asparagus With Fusilli Pasta and Peas. Preparing asparagus is a delicious and nutritious way to celebrate spring.
ASPARAGUS WITH FUSILLI PASTA AND PEAS 12 ounces fusilli pasta (or penne or farfalle) 1 pound asparagus, white, green, purple or violet or a mixture 4 ounces sugar snap peas 1 cup frozen peas 1½ tablespoons olive oil 3/4 cup minced onions (1/2 large white onion) 2 tablespoons Italian seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper 2 cups chicken broth 1½ teaspoons grated lemon zest 1½ cups grated Parmesan or Romano cheese, plus more for sprinkling 1. Bring a 5- to 6-quart pot of heavily salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook as package directs. Add asparagus and sugar snap peas about 3 minutes before the recommended time for the pasta to be done. Add frozen peas 2 minutes before the recommended time for the pasta to be done. 2. Drain pasta and vegetable mixture, reserving 1 cup of the pasta water. Return pasta and vegetable mixture to pasta pot. 3. While pasta cooks, heat oil in a 10- to 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add onions, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes or cayenne. Saute 5 minutes until tender. Add broth and simmer 2 to 3 minutes. 4. Add onion mixture and lemon zest; gently toss to mix and coat the pasta. Toss with 1 cup of the Parmesan and 1/2 cup of the pasta water, as needed, to create a sauce that coats the pasta. Use the rest of the cheese to sprinkle on pasta. Serves 4. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. Advertising Signs Advertising signs with bold-colored graphics, interesting product names and pictures of Uncle Sam and other patriotic designs sell for high prices. They sell best in the size sometimes called a “sofa picture,” since it’s big enough to hang between the ceiling and the top of the sofa. Many collectors want advertising for the historic content and authentic pictures of costumes, rooms and occupations and as a way to date popular messages and sayings.
also included a coupon on the wrapper that could be used for gifts. An old wrapped bar of the soap to display with other country items is sometimes offered for sale online for $10 to $15. *** I have a Rudolph pianola with serial number 63034. It was reconditioned 25 years ago into a piano and no longer works as a pianola. It’s in good condition and has been tuned regularly. What year was it made and what might it be worth? Pianolas, or player pianos, were popular in the late 19th and early 20th century. The instrument works by pumping the foot pedals to operate bellows that make the keys play without being touched. The music is on a punched paper roll inserted in the upper part of the piano. Thousands of music rolls were made, and new ones are still made for people who own player pianos. After phonograph records became popular, player pianos became less popular. The Rudolph Piano Co. was founded in New York in 1903. The serial number indicates that your pianola was made in 1925. Old pianos are hard to sell. Your piano might have some interest to a collector if it still operated as a player piano, but will have little value as is.
Q:
A: Spring is a season of rejuvenation, and that spirit of renewal can take hold inside a home. Warm weather and longer hours of daylight make spring a perfect time to imagine a home’s interior design in a new light. The following are a handful of decor ideas that may inspire homeowners to give their homes an entirely new look this spring. • Wallpaper: Wallpaper fell out of favor years ago, but new styles that aren’t so heavily patterned can make for wonderful additions to any room. Large-scale prints can give a room a whole new feel without giving homeowners or their guests the impression that they have stepped back in time. A simple, mural-style floral wallpaper on the walls surrounding a table in a breakfast nook can bring nature inside. • Pastel colors: Nothing embodies the spring quite like pastel colors. If colorful, bright flowers dot the garden in the backyard, homeowners can bring those uplifting pastels inside by painting an accent wall or even adding some brightly colored accent furniture to rooms that could use a lift. • Declutter: Clutter is often conquered during spring cleaning sessions, but homeowners who
want to create more free-flowing interior spaces can downsize their furniture and/or look for multipurpose features that make it hard for clutter to take over a room. Create more open space in entertaining areas by mounting the television and getting rid of a bulky entertainment center. Create even more space by replacing rarely used end tables with a storage ottoman where books and magazines can be stored to give a room a fresh, clean look. • Accent features: Sometimes the smallest changes to an interior space make the biggest impression. Replace dated accents like vases and table lamps with newer items that reflect the latest styles and trends. Such adjustments won’t break the bank, and they can give rooms a whole new feel. Spring is a great time to reconsider home interiors. This spring homeowners can embrace various strategies, both big and small, to give their homes a whole new feel.
Could this sign date from 1889? In small letters at the bottom it says: “Over fifty years on the market,” and Uncle Sam and Miss Liberty look Victorian. Is it 50 years from the founding of Kirk & Co.? Or 50 years from the 1930s Proctor & Gamble ownership, in which case, the sign was made in 1980.
The large, cardboard American Family Soap poster offered at a Morford auction in upstate New York brought $1,652. It was a bright-yellow “sofasized” picture of Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty with the slogan, “It is cheaper to buy good soap than new clothes. Every atom cleanses.” American Family Soap was made by James Kirk & Co., a firm that started in 1839. It was purchased in 1930 by Proctor & Gamble, which made the American Family brand for the hard water of the Midwest. They

by Jennifer Coates When Harry Kitchen incorporated Green Way Power seventeen years ago, his company had a motto that is more relevant today than ever. That motto read: “Don’t wait until it’s too late!â€? As we consider the unusual circumstances of today’s global crisis, we can see how critical prevention and preparation are to surviving diďŹƒcult times. Being prepared for unseen disruptions in our lives can bring us great peace of mind. Having a generator is one of the smartest things you can do to prepare for the unknown. Every New Englander knows that the weather here is unpredictable and can change in a moment, leaving us with downed trees and power lines which can cut o our power sources for days on end. The costs involved in this loss of power are immeasurable – no refrigeration for food or needed medicines, no AC in the hot, humid summer or no heat in the winter resulting in unlivable homes and burst pipes. A generator is the only true safeguard against all these possible outcomes. Green Way Power is a family-run and operated business that has been providing residents throughout Rhode Island with generators, transfer switches, accessories and monitoring systems for over two decades. While installing and repairing generators is Harry Kitchen’s primary work now, his career actually started in the heating and cooling industry back in 1987. Over those years of serving Rhode Islanders, Harry has become known for his dependability, honesty, professionalism, outstanding workmanship and superior customer service. Harry knows that his customers are his livelihood and so their satisfaction is of utmost importance to him. Since 2003, Green Way Power has expanded from an HVAC

business to include the generator-installation business it is today. Harry is an oďŹƒcial “Kohler Generator Dealerâ€?. Kohler Generators are some of the highest rated generators on the market and Harry chose them because of their reputation as “generators that are built to last.â€? They are known for their reliable and powerful performance. Harry will come to your home to determine the size of the Kohler generator that would best ďŹ t your family’s needs ~ whether they power your whole home or just the “necessities.â€? We are talking heat, AC, fridge, freezer, sump pump, security systems, to name a few. He will then work with all involved parties to get your generator

What Nurses Do Each Day There are millions of nurses nationwide. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, there are roughly 3.8 million registered nurses in the United States. That number figures to grow along with the demand for qualified, highly trained nurses. Nurses perform a variety of functions, some of which may come as a surprise to those outside the medical profession. Learning more about what nurses do on a daily basis can paint a clearer picture of just how vital these health care professionals are. Nurses are on the front lines of the medical profession, often interacting with patients more than any other professional within the health care field. Nurses communicate concerns, answer questions about conditions and care and even administer such care. While there are many tasks nurses can perform, some of their main responsibilities are observing and recording behavior, performing physical exams and diagnostic tests, collecting patient health histories, counseling patients and their families, and educating about treatment plans. Nurses also are responsible for administering medications, addressing and treating wounds and interpreting doctors’ patient information to make decisions about necessary actions, where appropriate. Nurses excel at listening to patients and analyzing their physical and emotional needs. Nurses also coordinate care with other health care providers and stay current with treatment options and cutting edge research and technology. In addition to the aforementioned tasks, nurses may draw blood and perform other health-related tests. Testing may differ based on the subspecialty of the nurse. For example, obstetrics nurses may initiate sonograms or oversee urine testing for pregnancy hormones. Pediatric nurses may plot growth charts and administer routine immunizations. Nurses are also there to listen to patients, and some may offer compassionate advice as they aim to help patients navigate difficult situations. According to CareerBuilder, nurses who work in physi-
cians’ offices, community health centers, schools, and other health environments may enjoy a regular working schedule and shifts during typical business hours. However, nurses working in hospitals and trauma centers tend to work rotating shifts to ensure patients receive round-theclock care. Many nurses work outside traditional business hours, including during evenings, on holidays and on weekends. Some nurses are even on-call like doctors. Nurses possess a distinct skill set that enables them to handle various tasks.
HOLLYWOOD — James Bond has met his match ... the coronavirus! The latest 007 film, “No Time to Die,” was to open April 2, but because producers felt people won’t want to congregate in theaters, they’ve moved the opening to the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Nov. 25. Meanwhile, Tom Cruise’s “Mission Impossible 7” has postponed a three-week shoot in Venice, Italy, and the CBS reality show “The Amazing Race” has suspended production until the threat has passed. *** William Shatner has said “no” to re-creating his Captain Kirk role in a film reboot of the original TV series that started the “Star Trek” revolution. Shatner says, “Kirk’s story is pretty well played out at this point, and besides, Kirk died in ‘Star Trek Generations,’ what’s really left?” *** Also not wanting to revisit his past success is Daniel Radcliffe, who, when asked if he would ever play Harry Potter in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise, explained, “I don’t like to say no to things, but it’s not something I’m rushing to do. I feel those films have moved on and they’re doing just fine without us. He then added, “I’m not saying I’ll never go back into any franchise, but I like the flexibility I have with my career now.” Many feel he’s made offbeat role choices to distance himself from Harry Potter, but he denies that. Still his variety of odd characters in the past and in upcoming films, such as “Guns Akimbo,” which opened March 5 in New Zealand, and the thriller “Escape From Pretoria,” which opened March 6 in the United Kingdom, are as un-Potter as you can get. Add the second season of his six-episode anthology TBS series “Miracle Workers, Dark Ages” and you got a pretty good argument for anti-Potterism! *** Fans of “The Saint” — the 1962-

69 TV series with Roger Moore the 1970-72 series with Ian Ogilvy and the 1997 Val Kilmer film — can rejoice because Dexter Fletcher director of the Elton John biopic “Rocketman,” is directing a new film version. *** Justin Timberlake (now 39) scored big in his film debut with “The Socia Network” (2010), then “Friends With Benefits” (2011) and “Inside Llewyn Davis” (2013) before bombing with “Wonder Wheel” (2017). He now wil take on “Palmer,” playing a forme college footballer, just out of pris on, who faces conflicts from his pas while raising a young boy orphaned by his mother. The tabloids are scream ing there is discord in his marriage to Jessica Biel, but word is they’re jus going through the growing pains tha many showbiz couples do living in the spotlight. Thanks to technology, I now believe none of what I hear and non of what I see! © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

IMPROVEMENT Gorgeous Trends in Green Home Design An eco-friendly home offers many benefits. Besides reducing your carbon footprint and being better for the environment, you can save lots of money on your energy bills in the long run. Plus, many of the latest trends are simply beautiful. Here are some to consider for your next home or remodel: Bamboo materials: Bamboo is a renewable resource that can be harvested gently, without disturbing the surrounding environment. It’s also a great alternative to hardwood, since it can regenerate faster than trees. The timeless material is very popular for flooring and can also be used for bathroom and kitchen cabinets. When buying this material for your home, look for a high-quality, sustainable producer since cheaper versions can be less sturdy. Passive house: Go beyond efficient appliances with an entire house that uses little-to-no energy. Derived from the German Passivhaus, passive house is a movement that refers to a design process that creates buildings that have a small ecological footprint and require little heating or cooling. Use the philosophy to guide decisions for your home — from adding solar panels on your roof to boosting your insulation. Reclaimed pieces: One of the quickest and easiest ways to have a positive environmental impact is buying as little new as possible. The next time you need a piece of furniture, create something rustic by recycling or upcycling an old or vintage item with a new coat of paint or a fresh wood stain. If you’re planning a demolition, try deconstruction instead — “un-build” the structure and find elements you can sal-

vage or reclaim, like exposed brick and wood beams. Water conservation: With more parts of the world experiencing drought, saving water is one of the top concerns for environmentalists. Wasting water is also expensive and leads to higher utility bills. Upgrading your home with water conservation features can go a long way, and most are designed to look sleek and minimalist. Opt for low-flow showerheads, toilets and sink fixtures. Insulated concrete forms: Many homeowners now prefer to build with insulated concrete forms (ICFs) because the material offers better energy efficiency and performance than traditional wood. Homes built with Nudura ICFs also provide better fire protection and can help you save as much as 60 percent on heating and cooling costs. Your home is less likely to contain cold areas as the insulation is continuous around the entire house. Find more information about the benefits of building with eco-friendly ICFS at nudura.com.

Tips for planting blueberries A trip to the produce aisle at a local grocery store can unveil a host of healthy additions to anyone’s diet. Such a jaunt also can raise eyebrows, as produce, particularly organic fruits and vegetables, can be very expensive. Consumers may feel helpless to corral the cost of healthy foods like fruits and vegetables, but all hope should not be lost. That’s especially so for people willing to give gardening a try. Blueberries are one of the healthiest foods people can eat. The USDA National Nutrient Database notes that blueberries, which are low in calories and high in fiber, are great sources of the vitamins C, K and B6. However, organic blueberries can be among the most expensive foods in the produce aisle. Various factors, including where blueberries come from and whether or not they’re organic, dictate their cost. But it’s not uncommon to pay roughly $4 for a six-ounce package of organic blueberries. For some, such costs are prohibitive. Growing blueberries in a home garden can save blueberry lovers substantial amounts of money while ensuring they reap all of the benefits of this highly nutritious and edible berry. The following are some tips novices can employ as they plant their first batch of blueberries. • Consult a local garden center. The U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council recommends consulting a local garden center before planting blueberries. The professionals at such centers can recommend the best variety of blueberry to plant. That’s an important first step, as the USHBC notes that farmers cultivate dozens of varieties of highbush blueberries across North America. Lowbush varieties also may be a gardener’s best option depending on where he or she lives. A local garden center can help you determine which variety best suits your local climate.
•
Plant where there is ample sun and well-drained soil. The roots of blueberry plants should remain moist throughout the growing season, so choose an area where the soil drains well. If that’s hard to find, consider planting in raised beds or patio containers. In addition, the University of Minnesota Extension notes that blueberries require full sun, so plant in a spot where the blueberries will not be denied daily sunlight. • Prepare the soil. Blueberries require acidic soil, so running a soil test prior to planting is a good idea. Speak with a local garden center about soil adjustments if the soil is unlikely to promote growth. • Fertilize carefully. The USHBC notes that established blueberry plants will respond well to acid fertilizers. However, it’s important not to overdo it, as blueberries are sensitive to overfertilization. Follow fertilization instructions and speak with local garden center professionals for advice. • Be patient. The UME notes that plants won’t bear much fruit in their first two to three years, and that harvests are bigger after five years. So patience is a virtue blueberry planters must embrace. Planting blueberries can be a rewarding hobby that also can save gardeners money at the grocery store.
