HOLLYWOOD — Jennifer Lopez and her main squeeze, Alex Rodriguez, aka A-Rod, have joined forces with J.P. Morgan Chase Bank in bidding for a sizable ownership of The New York Mets baseball team. The catch is they’ll have to raise upwards of $2.6 billion to make the deal. Cameron Diaz made 43 films and is a major star. Yet in 2018 she walked away from it all. On Jan. 5, 2015, at age 47, she wed musician Benji Madden, of The Madden Brothers and the pop-rock band Good Charlotte. On Dec. 30, 2019, she gave birth to their daughter, Raddix Chloe Wildflower Madden. Her last film was the reboot of “Annie, starring Jamie Foxx. Bookies in Vegas are already laying odds as to how long she’ll be able to stick with just motherhood before being lured back to movie-making. If you were a fan of “The Saint, either the ‘60s TV series with Roger Moore or the 1997 film with Val Kilmer, get ready for Chris Pine to be Simon Templer in a reboot. *** When Doris Day passed away on May 13, 2019, at age 97, due to pneumonia, her net worth was $200 million. Quite an accomplishment when you learn that in April 1968, when longtime husband and manager Marty Melcher died, she was broke thanks to his bad investments and the embezzling ways of his partner, Jerome Rosenthal, who helped himself to her money. She sued and regained $22.8 million from him. A recent auction brought in $3 million, and among her treasures were her 1930 Ford Model A Rumble Seat Roadster, called “Buttercup, with 35,142 miles. It sold for $96,000. Her 1957 Golden Globe Award for World Film Favorite earned $25,600, while her “Pillow Talk Globe went for $22,400. Her Columbia Records gold

Warner Bros.

Cameron Diaz record for “Que Sera, Seraâ€? (1956) went for $15,625 and “Secret Loveâ€? (1959) sold for $16,000. A brooch worn when she put her footprints in Grauman’s Chinese Theatre’s exclusive Forecourt of the Stars went for $40,625, while her “Doris Day Showâ€? director’s chair set sold for $16,000. A 20-pound elephant jardiniere, a gift from Rock Hudson, garnered $15,625. Her overlook sign from her home took in $16,000, her mom’s 14k gold and gem set went for $21,875, while her 14k gold poodle charm bracelet sold for $15,625. One of her own original oil paintings sold for $31,250, while a Tony Bennett oil painting sold for $15,625. The heir to her estate was her grandson son, Ryan. All the proceeds from the auction went to The Doris Day Animal Foundation, which she established in 1978. The times I met and photographed her, she was an absolute delight, a sunny day! O Holy St. Jude, apostle and martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in time of need: To you I have recourse from the depth of my heart and humbly beg to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Should I give my dog CBD-infused pet treats to calm his anxiety? What other methods are available for giving CBD to pets? — Carlos in San Diego DEAR CARLOS: With an increasing number of products for pets containing cannabidiol (the non-psychoactive ingredient in marijuana), it can be hard for owners to figure out what is going to be safe and effective for their dog or cat. Many owners swear by CBD, noting that it has been effective in reducing their pets’ pain from arthritis or injuries, and in alleviating chronic anxiety that would otherwise have to be treated with medications that may have side effects over the long term. The smaller your dog, the lower the dose of CBD that’s recommended. Large dogs can usually take a larger dose. So check the treat’s package closely to find out how much CBD your dog will get with each treat. Many owners opt instead to purchase CBD oil or tincture so that they can control the exact dosage their pet gets. The liquid is added to a pet’s food using an eyedropper, which is usually included with the bottle. The American Kennel Club has even sounded off on CBD oil, and while they’re still unsure about its actual benefits to dogs, the AKC recommends that owners buy the highest quality CBD oil they can find, focusing on organic products as much as possible to ensure that no pesticides or fungicides find their way into the bottle. Always consider CBD treats as medicine, not food or a reward. Stay within the dose recommended for your pet. BREAKFAST IN BED If your children aren’t old enough to make homemade waffles for Mom’s special day, just pick up good frozen waffles. Hopefully you’ll be able to find organic frozen toaster waffles in boxes for a variety of tastes and dietary requirements, including gluten free and grain free, in the freezer section of your grocery store. Simply heat them in the oven, or pop in your toaster and top with her favorites. For a creative presentation on Mom’s breakfast plate, use clean scissors to cut three toaster waffles into letters to spell “MOM” before you bake them. For the “M,” make an M letter template with an index card to fit the size of one waffle. Set on top of the waffle and snip into shape with the scissors. Your child will discover that the little square pocket designs (like a honeycomb) are a handy guide. For the “O,” do the same, or if you are using a round toaster waffle, simply cut out and remove an inner circle shape 1/2 inch from the outside edge. After completing the letters, place on a baking tray and bake in toaster or regular oven. Set the plate on a tray with a bever-

It’s morning. You’ve opened the newspaper, or you are reading it online. Wouldn’t a fluffy, crisp waffle taste good right now? Keep that thought, and now think about Mother’s Day, coming up on Sunday, May 10. Mom would no doubt be delighted with breakfastin-bed waffles smothered with her favorite toppings. Dollops of whipped cream and strawberries on top, or real maple syrup flooding the plate. I could go for that! Here are two ways to celebrate Mom with delicious waffles and more on her plate.

• On May 20, 1506, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus dies in Spain. Columbus, and most others, underestimated the world’s size, calculating that East Asia must lie about where North America sits on the globe. • On May 23, 1701, at London’s Execution Dock, British privateer William Kidd, known as Captain Kidd, is hanged for piracy and murder. In 1695, Kidd was commissioned to defend English ships from pirates in the Red Sea. When arrested with a shipload of treasure, Kidd’s Whig sponsors failed to back his claims of legitimacy. • On May 19, 1715, the colony of New York passes a law making it illegal to “gather, rake, take up, or bring to the market, any oysters whatsoever” between the months of May and September. The regulation was intended to help preserve certain species. • On May 24, 1844, before members of Congress, American inventor Samuel F.B. Morse dispatches a telegraph message from the U.S. Capitol to a railroad station in Baltimore. The message — “What Hath God Wrought?” — was telegraphed back to the Capitol a moment later. • On May 18, 1917, six weeks after the United States formally entered World War I, Congress passes the Selective Service Act, giving the president the power to draft soldiers. Of the almost 4.8 million Americans who served in the war, some 2.8 million were drafted. • On May 21, 1901, Connecticut becomes the first state to limit the speed of motor vehicles to 12 mph in cities and 15 mph on country roads. As late as 1930, a dozen states had no speed limit, while 28 states did not even require a driver’s license. • On May 22, 1969, actor Paul Newman makes his onscreen racing debut in the film “Winning.” Newman played a struggling race car driver who must turn around his fortunes by winning the Indianapolis 500.

Simple strategies to meet the neighbors after moving A lot goes into building safe, strong communities. While no single factor can be highlighted as more important than another in regard to building strong communities, a willingness on the part of residents to connect with their neighbors can greatly benefit local neighborhoods and the people who call those communities home. According to Mental Health America®, a community-based nonprofit dedicated to promoting the mental health of all Americans, research has shown that social connections increase happiness and lead to improved overall health and even longer lives. Adults may find that establishing a connection with their communities, and maintaining that connection while juggling the responsibilities of work and a family, is not always so easy. That’s especially so for adults who have recently relocated to new areas. Reaching out to neighbors can be a great way for adults to build new relationships that can benefit them as individuals and strengthen their communities. • Don’t be shy. People often want to know who’s living next door, so adults who have recently moved need not be shy about introducing themselves to their new neighbors. Introduce yourself and share what inspired you to move to your new neighborhood. • Answer and ask questions. Neighbors will no doubt ask questions when you introduce yourself, so be ready to answer these questions. Questions may focus on your career and where you grew up. If you grew up in the area where you recently moved, some of your neighbors likely did as well. Sharing stories about your school days and/or local hotspots can be a great way to break the ice. Don’t hesitate to ask some questions of your own as well. Asking questions might reveal some common interests that can serve as strong

foundations for budding relationships. • Host a backyard barbecue. Backyard barbecues are laid back affairs, and that pressure-free atmosphere is perfect for meeting new neighbors. Once you have settled in, invite a handful of your neighbors over for the barbecue. If you have children, invite neighbors who also are parents, ideally ones whose children are the same age as your own. Kids have sparked many a conversation, and discussions about local schools, parks and programs for youngsters can be great ice breakers. • Volunteer. Volunteering with community-based organizations is another great way to meet new neighbors. Volunteering with an organization whose mission you identify with may be even better, as you’re likely to find like-minded neighbors who share your passions when working with such groups. Strong communities are built around people. When moving to a new community, adults can overcome the challenges such relocations present by taking various steps to connect with their new neighbors.

Strawberry Creams This pretty pink dessert works well as a celebratory sweet for the non-chocoholic in your life. 1 envelope unflavored gelatin 1/2 cup water 1 lime 1 pound strawberries 1 cup strawberries, for garnish 1/2 cup sugar 1 tablespoon sugar, for garnish 1/3 cup heavy or whipping cream 6 round sugar or shortbread cookies (about 3-inch diameter) Whipped cream (optional) 1. In 1-quart saucepan, sprinkle gelatin evenly over 1/4 cup cold water to soften gelatin slightly. Set aside. 2. From lime, grate 1/2 teaspoon peel and squeeze 1 tablespoon juice. Coarsely chop 1 pound of strawberries. 3. In blender, combine chopped strawberries, lime peel and juice, 1/2 cup sugar and remaining 1/4 cup water; blend until pureed. Transfer strawberry mixture to medium bowl. Place bowl in larger bowl of ice water. 4. Heat gelatin mixture over low heat about 5 minutes or until gelatin is completely dissolved, stirring frequently. Stir gelatin mixture into strawberry mixture. 5. With rubber spatula, stir straw-

berry mixture frequently just until it begins to mound, about 20 minutes. Remove bowl from ice bath. 6. In small bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat heavy cream until stiff peaks form; fold into strawberry mixture with rubber spatula until blended. 7. Spoon strawberry mixture into six 6-ounce ramekins; top each with cookie. Place ramekins on tray for easier handling; cover and refrigerate until set, at least 6 hours or overnight. 8. For garnish, about 15 minutes before serving, cut each strawberry, from 1 cup strawberries, into quarters. Place in bowl with 1 tablespoon sugar and toss well. Set aside. 9. Meanwhile, to unmold creams: Run tip of knife around inside of ramekin. Tap side sharply with hand to break seal; invert cream onto dessert plate. Garnish with strawberries with their juice. Serve with whipped cream, if you like. Serves 6. • Each serving: About 230 calories, 9g total fat (4g saturated), 18mg cholesterol, 55mg sodium, 35g total carbohydrate, 3g dietary fiber, 3g protein. Starter supplies for small pets Cats and dogs may get much of the attention, but small pets can bring just as much to a household as their larger counterparts. Diminutive in size but not personality, hamsters, guinea pigs, ferrets, reptiles, mice, and more may be just the right fit for those who desire a pet, but may not have the space or money for large animals. The American Pet Products Association’s 2017-2018 National Pet Owners Survey found that 7.9 million households had birds, 6.7 million had various small animals, and 4.7 million included assorted reptiles. The pet sitter company PetBacker says 9 percent of Canadians own pets such as fish; birds; small mammals, such as hamsters; and reptiles. They may be smaller in size, but these pets still need a variety of gear. Environment Most small pets will spend the majority of their time in a cage or a tank. In this environment, the pets will need bedding or some type of cage lining. Wood chips and shavings, shredded newspaper or hay are often used. Reptiles and amphibians may have special needs to help regulate temperature. Gravel, stones and rocks may be used. Always consult

with a veterinarian or a pet supply expert regarding the correct set-up for a small pet’s environment to ensure the animal’s health and well-being. Toys and other gear Small animals need items to provide mental stimulation and physical activity. These items do not need to be complicated or expensive. A gerbil or hamster may appreciate an empty toilet paper tube to run through. Some pets like to race around in plastic balls, while others will be satisfied digging and burrowing through bedding. Tube mazes or hiding places also may fit the bill. Birds like hanging mirrors and other colorful toys on which they can perch or peck.

other insects. Research which fresh foods can be mixed with commercially produced foods for optimal health. Feeding bowls, bottles or small dishes also will need to be purchased when addressing small pets’ dietary needs, offers the pet retailer Petco. Veterinarians can be a great resource in regard to how to care for small pets.

Nutrition Food is another consideration when starting out with small animals. They may not eat as much or as often as a dog or cat, but they, too, have specific dietary requirements. For example, Banfield Pet Hospital says overfeeding is a big issue with hamsters, so look for a quality hamster food and avoid snacks and treats. Hamsters tend to horde food, so they may take food they really do not need. Certain lizards will eat mealworms, crickets or

by Jennifer Coates Just because the country seems to be at a standstill, it does not mean that our lives do not go on. We still experience stress, chronic pain, anxiety and many other disorders that do not disappear in times of social distancing and stay-at-home orders. In fact, all these conditions are often heightened during times of such uncertainty and confusion. Michael Lanoue, the owner of The CBD Store on Post Road, is very aware of the needs of his customers at this time. He knows that what they need most of is relief - relief from pain, relief from sleeplessness, relief from worry and respite from the stress of a global pandemic that has far-reaching effects on a local, personal level. For Mike, who has dedicated the last few years of his life to helping others, the relief these customers are seeking can come from the broad range of CBD products he sells at his store in Warwick. The CBD Store is doing everything it can to provide the kind of consistent, dependable service that customers have come to depend on from Mike and his knowledgeable staff. They have even lowered the cost of their products to make them more affordable in this economic downturn. Furthermore, to thank mothers everywhere at this season of Mother’s Day, customers will find a “Buy one, get one 30% off of all CanamedŽ products, the triple-tested products sold uniquely at the store that Mike personally developed with professionals (until further notice). Guns Akimbo (R) — Deep in an internet culture that’s devoid of humanity and compassion lie the fans of a live-streamed, real-life, to-thedeath war game called Skizm. Maybe not so deep after all, since everyone is watching, including Miles (Daniel Radcliffe), a game developer with a Skizm-trolling pastime. But then Miles is drugged and dropped into the game, pitted against actual bad guys and girls. His hands have guns literally bolted to them and in order to right this mess he’ll have to battle to the bloody end against professional cold-blooded killers, chief among them an extraordinarily successful player named Madman Films Nix (Samara Weaving). Seed Tape Box It’s spring and time to plant the seeds that grow into vegetables and flowers that often are tasty salads for deer, rabbits, squirrels and other local wildlife. In 1790, a Shaker religious community started to sell packets filled with seeds saved from the previous year. It was a new idea. Seeds for farmers had only sold in bulk quantities. At first the packets held only vegetable seeds, but by the mid-1800s, flower seeds also were sold. Sometime before 1918, Shaker seed tape was invented and sold. Today, gardeners can buy seed tape for hundreds of plants or make their own. Just unroll some toilet paper and press one or two seeds into the paper at spaced intervals. Then roll up the paper utill it’s time to plant. The seed tape (toilet paper) can be stretched into a shallow line in the dirt, then covered with more dirt, watered and kept free of weeds. Rows of plants will come up in a few days. The American Seed Tape Company of Newark, New Jersey, had a seed tape brand called Pakro that advertised in farm publications from 1918 to at least the 1920s. Recently, a Wm Morford advertising auction offered an early cardboard Pakro seed tape display box that held 60 different types of seed tapes in original small boxes with color pictures like those on the packets. The 15- by 18-inch display sold for $1,033. *** I have a vintage hammered aluminum chafing dish with original glass bowl, but I believe the aluminum “cup placed in the space for the heating element isn’t original. The space is the perfect size for a tea light candle, but I hesitate to put a direct flame under the glass. What was used originally, and what would be safe to use now? Would Sterno be acceptable? Don’t use canned heat (Sterno) if the glass dish is directly over the heat. A tea candle will help keep

How to support local businesses during mandatory restrictions The outbreak of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 throughout the United States in March 2020 transformed American lives in ways many might never have imagined possible. Social distancing recommendations and restrictions on gatherings of more than a handful of people had a ripple effect on the economy that adversely affected many small businesses. Small businesses are the backbones of local communities. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses make up 99.9 percent of all businesses in the United States and employ 59.9 million employees. The SBA notes that the accommodation and food services sector is the second largest small business industry. Many of these businesses have been hit especially hard as more and more of their regular customers stay at home in the wake of government advisories promoting social distancing. But small businesses are vital to local communities, and there are ways to support them and help them stay afloat as they confront the challenges posed by the COVID-19 outbreak. • Order delivery. It’s still possible to enjoy foods from your favorite local restaurants. Many restaurants that had not previously done so have begun to offer delivery services, be it curbside or at-home, and this can provide a great respite for families who have had to cook three meals a day at home for their entire families for extended periods of time. Curbside delivery

has made it possible to get takeout meals without compromising social distancing recommendations. • Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19. • Purchase a gift card. Gift cards can help small

businesses generate revenue at a time when their doors are largely closed to the public. This can be vital to these businesses’ survival, and it gives consumers something to look forward when life returns to normal. • Help market local businesses. Spread the word when local businesses deliver in the wake of the restrictions put on them due to COVID-19. Share these experiences via social media or online reviews, and urge your neighbors to patronize these businesses. Local businesses are suffering during the COVID-19 outbreak. But communities can come together to support business owners and their employees to help these vital businesses stem the tide.

What can and cannot be composted Avid gardeners know that compost can add vital nutrients to soil used in gardens, container plants and lawns. The fact that compost is so versatile and nutrient-dense may not even be its most admirable quality. Made from items used in and around the house, compost costs just about nothing to produce. The raw materials that make up compost come from organic waste. These can be disposables from the garden and kitchen, as well as other areas around the house. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, yard trimmings and food scraps add up to 20 to 30 percent of the municipal solid waste in the United States. Turning waste into compost not only helps the landscape, but also the planet. Compost is relatively easy to make, and there are scores of materials that can be put into compost. But it is just as essential to know which ingredients cannot be used in compost. Okay for compost Most organic materials, or items that were once living, can be used in compost. Plant-based items used in cooking, such as potato peelings, carrot skins, banana peels, cocoa hulls, coffee grounds and filters, corn cobs, apple cores, egg shells, fruit peels, kelp, and nut shells, can be added to compost. Other items from around the house, like unused kitty litter, hair, shredded newspapers and cardboard, leaves, flowers, paper, pine needles, ashes, and sawdust, can be successfully added to compost. Stick to items that are not treated heavily with chemicals. Should not be used in compost Inorganic and non-biodegradable materials cannot go into compost. These are items like plastic, glass, aluminum foil, and metal. Pressuretreated lumber, although a natural material, is treated with preservatives and often pesticides that can be harmful if they leech into the garden. The small-gardening resource Balcony

Garden Web indicates coated or glossy printed papers, such as those from catalogs, magazines, wrapping paper, marketing materials, and business cards, should not be added to compost piles because of the chemicals and inks used in these pages. Planet Natural Research Center says to avoid pet droppings from dogs and cats. Animal products like bones, butter, milk, fish skins, and meat, may decompose and start to smell foul. Maggots, parasites, pathogens, and other microorganisms can form in the compost. These materials also may attract flies and scavenger animals. Plus, they decompose very slowly. Any personal hygiene products should be avoided because they are tainted by human fluids and that can pose a health risk. While weeds are not harmful in compost piles, there is the risk that seeds can germinate and then infiltrate garden beds when the compost is used. The same can be said for tomato plants and some other hardy fruits and vegetables. Compost is a winner in the garden and around the landscape. Learning which ingredients can and can’t be added to compost piles is useful for any gardener.

Container gardening tips Gardening is beneficial in various ways. The AARP states that some of the health perks associated with gardening include improved mood, increased vitamin D levels (which benefits bones and immune system) and reduced risk of dementia. In addition, if gardening efforts include growing herbs, fruits and vegetables, it can be a cost-effective way to eat healthy. For gardeners without sufficient space or for those with mobility issues, container gardening can be an ideal way to grow everything from flowers to vegetables. Better Homes & Gardens says most plants are not fussy about the containers in which they grow so long as some of their basic needs are met. This means watering correctly for the type of plant, and ensuring sufficient drainage. The following are some other ways container gardening efforts can prove successful. • Watch water. Planet Natural Research Center says plants with thin leaves typically need ample water, and plants with thick leaves need less. Use this as a guideline to gauge water needs. • Size correctly. Plants should be sized to the container. Consider dwarf varieties of certain plants if your containers are small. • Choose the right soil. Fill containers with a commercial potting soil rather than soil from the garden. Garden soil can dry into a solid mass, while commercial mixtures have amendments like peat moss, vermiculite, compost, and

other ingredients to help with soil texture and moisture retention. • Mix it up. When planting containers of flowers and other greenery, Good Housekeeping says to include “a thriller, a spiller and a fillerâ€? as a good rule of thumb. The thriller is the focal point, the spiller a trailing plant, and a filler has smaller leaves or flowers to add bulk and color. • Poke holes. Drainage holes are essential so that soil will not become waterlogged. Holes don’t need to be large, but there should be enough of them so that excess water can drain out readily. • Select the right container material. Container materials may be affected by gardeners’ budgets, personal taste and other factors. For those who live in hot climates, selecting a light-colored container can help prevent further soil heat absorption. Container gardening is a healthy and enjoyable activity that can pay dividends in various ways.
