Netflix series “The Witch er,” for the new four-part spy film fran chise “Argylle,” with Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, John Cena and Samuel L. Jackson. Cavill will also star in director Guy Ritchie and producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s next film “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” (opposite “Baby Driver’s” Eiza Gonzalez), which charts Win ston Churchill’s and “James Bond” creator Ian Fleming’s secret WWII combat organization. “Enola Holmes 2” also hit Netflix recently, and Cavill will be back to play Superman again.
***
“12 Years a Slave” Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, currently headlin ing “Black Panther: Wakanda Forev er,” has found “A Quiet Place” for her next film. Considered a spin-off, not a sequel to “A Quiet Place” and “A Qui et Place 2,” “A Quiet Place: Day One,” is based on an idea from creator, star and director of “A Quiet Place” John Krasinski — who won’t be starring in it when it opens in March 2024.
***
“The Fabulous Four” — Susan Sarandon Bette Midler Sissy Spacek and Megan Mullally — are lifelong friends who reunite in Key West for Midler’s wedding. Aussie director Jocelyn Moorhouse begins shooting next year in her home. Spacek currently stars with Dustin Hoffman in “Sam & Kate.”

International film superstar Cath erine Deneuve (age 79) is best remembered for “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” (1964), Roman Polans ki’s “Repulsion” (1965) and “Viva Maria!” (1965), with George Ham ilton and French mega-superstar Bri gitte Bardot. Even though she’s never stopped working in her native home of France, she’s making an interna tional comeback in “Bernadette” as former French first lady Bernadette Chirac, wife of 1995 French president Jacques Chirac. I met Deneuve when she and Bardot toured 26 theaters in New York with “Viva Maria!” in 1965.
Also making a comeback is Shelley Duvall, who won two Emmys, a Brit ish Academy Award, a Peabody and a top prize at the Cannes Film Festival. Duvall was unforgettable in two 1980 classics (Wendy in “The Shining” and Olive Oyl in “Popeye”). Now 73, she’s been absent since 2002, and her last film was “Manna from Heaven,” with Shirley Jones Louise Fletcher and Cloris Leachman. In 2016, a talk show host who calls himself “Dr.” did a hatchet job interviewing her. But in 2021, when the Hollywood Reporter profiled her in “Searching for Shelley Duvall,” it created renewed interest in her career.
After she completed her comeback werewolf film “The Forest Hills,” Duvall admitted, “It was a lot of fun, and I’m excited to be back!” The times I partied with her, she was sweet and funny. Guess werewolves like Olive Oyl, too?

• “I pick up extra coffee mugs from second-hand stores, then clean and fill them with hot chocolate packets, small coffees and wrapped tea bags and a few little chocolate bars. These make nice little gifts for friends and service people. I am on a fixed budget, but I find that I can be generous this way.” — T.L. in North Carolina
• When mailing packages, keep in mind that secure cargo is tight ly packed. You don’t have to buy expensive packing peanuts or bubble wrap; you can use what’s around. For instance, plastic grocery bags are always in abundance. They can be tucked into any spare room and they barely weigh a thing. Same with newspaper; fill all the available space so that nothing bounces around in transit. Save your bubble wrap for the following tip.
• “When mailing cookies, make sure they are packed well. Use an appro priate size container, and give layers some space by separating them with small sheets of bubble wrap. My cookies arrive intact every time.” — J.J. in Florida
• “I use a black permanent marker to ‘erase’ scuff marks on my black heels. I only wear them a couple of times a year, so I have to make them last. It works.” — R.E. in Minnesota

There is an oft-repeated phrase that says, “If walls could talk, what stories they would tell!” If this were true, and walls could talk, they would have so much to say about the new home of West Greenwich Grocery.
Today, this welcoming roadside stop on Nooseneck Hill Road is owned by Denise Slater, a native Rhode Islander whose husband is the longtime owner of Slater’s Exeter Auto Repair. Denise purchased the building in 2019 from Jean Johnson, the “J” in “T & J’s Hay & Grain Shop”.
The original building had been home to a host of former owners, from the more recent grain store all the way back to the 1950’s to a gas station run by the Rathbun family ~ why, even Hollywood came calling to use the building in a movie! If the walls of West Green-
wich Grocery could talk, what stories they would have to tell!
Three years ago, Denise, who is not only a small business owner but also a collector of antiques, a mother of two sons, a grandmother of two-yearold Sophia, a community leader, a caretaker, AND a former car mechanic, was up to the challenge of taking this old building and putting her own mark on it. Armed with a crew of able-bodied helpers, a new vision of what this space could become and a sensitive eye to its interesting past, Denise got to work.
Passersby who travel down Nooseneck Hill Road will hardly recognize West Greenwich Grocery today with its rustic wood exterior, friendly sign on the door, and front porch with comfy benches. The lumber, which was sourced
from Kenyon Mill, gives the store the appearance of a log cabin ~ you just can’t resist the temptation to go inside!
As soon as you walk inside the grocery, you see shelves lined with every convenience you can imagine, from the usual snack items to take on the road to the basics for any pantry to fresh, local vegetables and lots of frozen foods. There are household items including toiletries, cleaning products, pet food, cigarettes, and so much more ~ a little bit of this and a little bit of that!
Finally, Denise has made an extraordinary e ort to support local artists, farmers, beekeepers, and craftsmen. At this festive time of year, add a stop at the West Greenwich Grocery on your holiday “to do” list!
West
Greenwich Grocery is open seven days a week from 8:00am –
and is located at 789 Nooseneck Hill Road. Find them

Q:Who is the actress playing Princess Diana in the current season of “The Crown”? I know she’s different than the actor who played her the last two seasons. Both have done a fantastic job. — L.L.
A:Elizabeth Debicki, who is Aus tralian, began playing Princess Diana in season five of the Netflix series “The Crown,” opposite Dominic West as Prince Charles. Debicki is a statuesque 6 feet, 3 inches tall, and with her big blue eyes, she physically inhabits the tragic character of the Princess of Wales. Debicki’s first big role was a support ing one in Baz Lurhmann’s “The Great Gatsby,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio. In 2016, she starred alongside Tom Hid dleston and Hugh Laurie in the British miniseries “The Night Manager,” and before landing “The Crown,” she starred in acclaimed director Christopher Nolan’s twisty thriller “Tenet.”
Emma Corrin, who is British and whose pronouns are they/them, por trayed Diana in season four of “The Crown” and was nominated for an Emmy. They’re only 26, but their career has taken off quickly. Corrin played Esme in the first season of the HBO Max series “Pennyworth,” which is the origin story of Batman’s butler, and they can also be seen in “My Policeman,” a recent film starring Harry Styles. ***
Is the new movie directed by Steven Spielberg about his own life? Also, how many Oscars has he won as director? — S.P.
A:Steven Spielberg, one of Amer ica’s greatest directors, recently told Lesley Stahl on “60 Minutes” that every one of his movies is a person al movie. However, he admits that his new film, “The Fabelmans,” is semiautobiographical. It’s about a boy, like him, who was obsessed with making movies and whose mismatched parents divorce when he’s a teenager. Paul Dano plays the engineer dad in the movie and Michelle Williams his free-spirit mom, and their respective personalities mirror Spielberg’s own parents.
Spielberg has two Academy Awards as director for “Saving Private Ryan” and “Schindler’s List,” both released in the 1990s. He has a slew of nominations, how
A:Jennifer Lawrence’s career has slowed down the past few years, but for good reason. She fell in love and married Cooke Maroney, an art gallery owner, and gave birth to their son, Cy, earlier this year. Professionally, she was working on perfecting the deep voice necessary to play fallen tech tycoon Eliz abeth Holmes in an upcoming film “Bad Blood,” directed by Adam McKay.
However, Lawrence recently announced she’s exited the project after seeing how well Amanda Sey fried did in the same role for “The Dropout,” a limited series on Hulu.
Seyfried won an Emmy for her por trayal as well, and Lawrence felt “we don’t need to redo that.” It’s uncertain whether the role will be recast or if the project has been scrapped.

Avoiding Holiday Shopping Scams
It’s that time of year again when we do holiday shopping, much of it online. It’s also the time when more scammers come out. And what is it scammers want most? They want your personal information so they can turn it into cash and fraud ulent purchases.
Here are a few ways to avoid getting scammed online this holiday season: Beware sales emails that include links, even if the email is from a store you usually use. Thieves are very good at making their scam pages look gen uine. Instead of clicking a link, open a web browser and go directly to the website itself. Sometimes the email will request that you update your account information. Instead, call the store and ask if they’ve sent out that request.
Beware the tracking emails you get with updates about packages that you’re expecting. Remember that gen uine FedEx and UPS emails won’t ask for any personal information from you. Don’t click links. Go directly to the website.
Be careful where you shop online. Check reviews to see what others have to say. Avoid those with few or low rat ings.
Consider using Amazon for most of your online purchases and having a Prime membership. Amazon is good at protecting customers when it comes to you receiving damaged items or not receiving any items at all. A Prime membership now costs $139 a year, but it includes free shipping, free mov ies and videos, and more.
If you are scammed, report it. Call your bank and the police, and then notify the Elder Fraud Hotline at 833372-8311.
A goal for 2023: Go inside your bank to do your transaction now and then. Yes, it’s easier to just use the drive-up window for deposits and cash with drawals, but there is a lot to be said for letting them put a face to a name. Once they know you and your banking hab its, they’re more able to quickly identi fy anything that might be wrong.

Thanksgiving Fails and Easy Fixes
Making the Thanksgiving meal can be stressful because there are many things that can go wrong. So here are fixes to the most common fails.
But first, we’re going to make an emergency kit like an insurance pol icy in case of disaster. You’ll want a meat thermometer, lots of chicken broth, a packet of instant turkey gravy mix, a spray can of whipped top ping and a frozen pizza.
There are few kitchen disasters that can’t be fixed. But if every thing goes to heck in a cornuco pia, relax. You can always serve the pizza.
Now, I’ll anticipate your calls for help.
Help! My turkey is ...
Frozen! No big deal! You can cook it from frozen.
Remove plastic wrapping and place turkey on a rack in a bak ing pan. Cook frozen turkey at 325 F for 23 minutes per pound.
For example, an 18-pound turkey would take approximately 7 hours from frozen. After 2 hours, remove the partially cooked turkey to remove the bag of giblets from the cavity.
Now, brush the turkey with butter, season with salt and pepper and return to the oven. When it’s done, use the thermometer to check for a tempera ture of 175 F at the thigh and 165 F at the breast. Let it rest, covered, before slicing.
Raw! It’s still pink inside? Well, stick it back in the oven and use that thermometer! If you’re running out of wine and the biggest issue is time, cut the bird into pieces (whole breasts, legs and thighs) and pop them on a sheet pan and stick ’em back in the oven to quickly continue cooking.
Dry! Thickly slice the dry turkey and place into a baking dish. Add chicken broth to cover and stick it in the oven for about 10 minutes. And make extra gravy.
Help! My potatoes are ...
Lumpy! They’re probably under cooked. Stop mashing and find a lump and smoosh it, if it feels solid, put the pan back on low heat, cook until softened and mash again.
Gluey! Oh no! You over mashed the potatoes, releasing starch, resulting in wallpaper paste. So, never use your food processor or mixer to mash
The Miracle Prayer
Dear Heart of Jesus: In the past, I have asked many favors. This time, I ask you this very special one.
Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes, it will become your favor, not mine.
Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and your favor will be granted no matter how impossible. Thank you also to the Divine Mercy.
JLW
Help! My gravy is ... Lumpy! Easy fix. Pour your gravy through a fine mesh strainer and reheat.
Thin! Mix 3 to 4 tablespoons corn starch with enough cold water to make a smooth paste. Whisk this into the gravy a bit at a time, letting the gravy simmer until thickened to your liking. Or add some of that instant gravy packet from your insurance policy.
Bland! Most likely, it needs more salt. Add some chicken or vegeta ble bouillon. Or add that emergency gravy packet and some broth.
Help! My stuffing is ...
Dry! Melt a tablespoon of butter into a cup of warm chicken stock. Add to the stuffing and mix well. Cover and put it back in the oven for about 5 minutes to reheat. And make extra gravy.
Soggy! Spread your stuffing out on a rimmed baking sheet and put it in the oven to dry out a bit.
Help! My dessert has ... Burnt crust! Carefully remove the crust and either add a crumb topping. (Mix flour, oats, brown sugar, butter and cinnamon. Sprinkle it over the filling and bake until golden.) Or use the whipped topping in your emergency kit to pipe a pretty boarder.
Cracked! If your cheesecake or pumpkin pie has a cracked top, use the whipped topping to make a pretty design over the top.

potatoes. A good old-fashioned potato masher does the trick.
If it’s too late and you’ve got gluey potatoes, mix in a bunch of cheese and butter and season liberally. Put the potato mixture in a shallow cas serole dish and top with buttered breadcrumbs. Bake until your “potato casserole” is lightly browned on top. And make extra gravy.

“Drink Masters” (TV-MA) — Who doesn’t love food-based reality competitions? From “Cake Wars” to “The American Barbecue Show down,” there’s something out there for everyone’s food palette. But did everyone just forget about the drinks? Well, for those who like to end their days with a fun cocktail or enjoy an adult beverage to pair their meal with, Netflix presents “Drink Masters,” out now. In this series, an array of bar tenders from around the world face off in exciting challenges to earn the grand prize of $100,000 and become “The Ultimate Drink Master.” So, pour yourself a drink, sit back and relax as you watch these mixologists put their skills to the test. (Netflix)
“Nope” (R) — One of the most promising film releases of this year is now available to stream. Directed by Jordan Peele (“Get Out” and “Us”),
this sci-fi horror film takes place on the Haywood family ranch, where sib lings OJ (“Daniel Kaluuya”) and Em (“Keke Palmer”) raise horses that are used in film and TV. Shortly after their father’s death, OJ and Em start expe riencing power outages, with their horses reacting wildly to a mysterious object floating through the night sky. Once they realize that this object has the power to vacuum up anything in sight, the Haywoods deem it a UFO and hatch a plan to document proof — if they can out-maneuver it to sur vive, that is. Peele is quickly building himself a respectable and memora ble resume of films. You don’t want to skip this one; it’ll really stick with you. (Peacock)
Supplement With Good Potential Still Needs to Be Better Studied
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a friend with multiple health problems, mostly digestive and throat issues, who has recently discovered the supplement astaxanthin through his treatment with a nutritionist. He is extremely optimistic that this supplement is his ticket to better health. He said it was developed by a biochemical engineer. As a doctor, would you recommend this for your patients? He says it is a powerful antioxidant and reduces inflammation. He also believes it will destroy any cancer cells. — N.H.
The Food and Drug Administration categorizes astaxanthin as “generally regarded as safe.” As I have often said, since supplements are not tightly reg ulated in the United States, you must rely on the manufacturer providing you with what they say they are, and there have been many, many instanc es where that has not been the case (in general, not about astaxanthin in par ticular).
Being conservative, I would say this supplement has potential, but I can’t recommend it until it has been better studied.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My hair is falling out. What can be done about it? I take biotin and saw palmetto, but it hasn’t stopped the hair loss. The older a lady gets, the more her hair falls out! — L.
“Marry Me” (PG-13) — Released earlier this year, this rom-com star ring Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson is a movie that I had honestly dread ed watching. Produced by Lopez’s own production company, it follows a caricature of who Lopez is in real life, a superstar singer and dancer named Kat Valdez. Kat plans to marry her male counterpart in the industry, Bastian (Maluma), on stage during a concert, until she sees a leaked video of Bastian’s infidelity right before. In what can be described only as the most emotional reaction ever, she picks an audience member out from the crowd and decides to marry him instead. If you can brush past the lack of believability, the heart of this mov ie isn’t half-bad. (Prime Video)
ANSWER: Astaxanthin is a nat urally occurring pigment related to vitamin A that was first isolated from a lobster in 1938. It indeed has both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It has been used as a col oring agent in salmon, and is also nat urally found in salmon. Most astaxan thin sold commercially is synthesized from petroleum products.
As a supplement, astaxanthin has been best studied to treat and prevent skin damage from aging. Multiple small studies have shown that it can improve skin appearance and function when used orally or topically. There is also some evidence it can reduce DNA damage from ultraviolet light.
The ability to reduce the type of damage that may ultimately lead to skin cancer is a far cry from the ability to “destroy any cancer cell.” There is no secret or hidden cure to cancer.
ANSWER: I have learned not to underestimate the psychological effects of hair loss in women. Female pattern hair loss is a common problem affect ing older women. The diagnosis can be made for certain by your regular doctor or a dermatologist after an exam. The most common pattern is thinning of the hair, often initially in the midline and worse on the top of the scalp (vertex). There are other causes of hair loss, so it is important to get a correct diagnosis in order to choose the right treatment.
I have not seen much success with over-the-counter supplements. Topical minoxidil (Rogaine) is the most com mon treatment, but I have started to try very low-dose oral minoxidil in some of my women patients. Spironolactone (a blood pressure medicine that also blocks testosterone receptors) and finasteride (used in men both for enlarged prostate and for male pattern hair loss) are also used by experts for women. It takes months to see if these are working.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu.

Stickley Furniture
Gustav Stickley has created icons of American design. Inspired by John Ruskin and William Morris of the English Arts and Crafts movement, Stickley started the Craftsman work shop in 1900. He originated what was later called mission furniture, with its simple, sturdy shapes, iron and hammered copper hardware, and emphasis on skilled craftsmanship and practicality instead of decoration. He favored oak because it is strong and heavy. Like the movement in England, Stickley’s style went beyond a furni ture brand; it was an entire philosophy. He published a magazine called “The Craftsman.”
This early Stickley desk, made around 1900, sold for $3,900 at Cot tone Auctions in Geneseo, New York. It has a fall front that could be folded up when the writing surface wasn’t in use, taking up less space in the room. Other adjustable or multifunction Stickley designs include an adjustable recliner and a bookshelf that could also be used as a table.

Q:I recently bought a cut-glass decanter at an auction. It has a white residue on the very bottom. How can I remove this without dam aging the crystal?
A:The white residue is caused by calcium, lime and other min erals found in hard water. It can be removed by filling the decanter with warm water and adding white vinegar, vinegar and baking soda, or a denture tablet. Let it sit for several hours or overnight. Rinse out the solution and wash the decanter in a plastic tub or in a sink lined with a towel or rubber mat to prevent chipping. Turn the faucet to one side or put a rubber collar on the spout to avoid hitting the metal. Wash in warm (not hot) water and detergent, rinse and put upside down on a dish rack to dry. The inside of the decanter can be dried by inserting pieces of an old cotton sheet and using the handle of a wooden spoon or a wooden dowel to wipe it.

TIP: Never wear rubber gloves when cleaning or handling silver. The sulfur from the gloves tarnishes silver. *

Plan Now for the Cost of a New Pet
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: As the holiday season approaches, many people are thinking about adopting or purchasing a pet as a gift. Can you remind readers that the cost of owning a pet can be quite high? Unexpected pet care expenses are one reason that pets wind up at shel ters after the holidays. — Carl W., Indianapolis
DEAR CARL: You brought up this issue at the perfect time, as many families start thinking about and com mitting to getting a pet for Christmas. Potential owners have a lot of things to think about and discuss, and one big item is the cost of owning a pet.
Bringing home a cat or dog from the shelter can cost $1,200 to $1,800, a Geico Living post reports. Adoption fees, the initial vet visit and supplies are part of the upfront costs. Smaller pets like hamsters and goldfish will cost about $200 initially when a tank, cage and supplies are factored in.
Then there’s the cost of continuing care. A cat will cost at least $800 per year in litter, food, toys, medical care and more. Dogs can cost $1,500 per year or more, and if a professional trainer is needed, that adds to the cost. And if your pet gets sick, veterinary bills can be quite expensive.
This is not to talk people out of own ing a pet, but to make them aware that a pet will impact the household budget more than most new owners expect. Know the upfront cost of a new pet. Budget for the monthly and annu al costs of keeping a pet healthy and happy. Minimize financial surprises, and you can focus fully on your pet’s well-being.

As we enter this season of Thanksgiving, we would like to take an opportunity to say thank you to everyone who has embraced us in the Kent County area over the past 40 years. When we started our second location here in 1983 (with our original home in Providence since 1914), we were three funeral directors serving about 25 Kent County families in our first year.
As we prepare to enter our 40th year in Kent County in 2023, you have helped us grow to seven funeral direc tors serving more than 360 families per year over the past several years. We are so humbled by the honor and privilege of caring for your families and we are committed to continuing to do so with the most personalized, compassionate care we can possibly provide.
In case you haven’t had a chance to meet them, we’d like to introduce you to our directors, especially the most recent additions to our staff who have joined us over the past few years just prior to and during the pandemic. They bring decades of service to families throughout Rhode Island. We know these directors will continue to uphold the Carpenter-Jenks standard of care that you have come to know, expect and appreciate. We are deeply grateful for your continued confidence.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your honesty continues to impress every one who needs reassurance about a project. But be careful you don’t lose patience with those who are still not ready to act.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Pushing others too hard to do things your way could cause resentment and raise more doubts. Instead, take more time to explain why your methods will work.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be more considerate of those close to you before making a decision that could have a serious effect on their lives. Explain your intentions and ask for their advice.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might have to defend a workplace decision you plan to make. Colleagues might back you up on this, but it’s the facts that will ultimately win the day for you. Good luck!
LEO (July 23 to August 22) The Big Cat’s co-workers might not be doing enough to help get that project fin ished. Your roars might stir things up, but gentle purrr-suasion will prove to be more effective.
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone you care for needs help with a problem. Give it lovingly and without judging the situation. What ever you feel you should know will be revealed later.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) While you’re to be admired for how you handled recent workplace problems, be careful not to react the same way to a new situation until all the facts are in.
SCORPIO (October 23 to Novem ber 21) Rely on your keen instincts, as well as the facts at hand, when dealing with a troubling situation. Be patient. Take things one step at a time as you work through it.
SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your curiosity leads you to ask questions. However, the answers might not be what you hoped to hear. Don’t reject them without checking them out.
CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Be careful not to tackle a problem without sufficient facts. Even sure-footed Goats need to know where they’ll land before leaping off a mountain path.
AQUARIUS (January 20 to Febru ary 18) Appearances can be deceiv ing. You need to do more investigating before investing your time, let alone your money, in something that might have some hidden flaws.
PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your recent stand on an issue could make you the focus of more attention than you would like. But you’ll regain your privacy, as well as more time with loved ones, by week’s end.
BORN THIS WEEK: You’re a good friend and a trusted confidante. You would be a wonderful teacher or a respected member of the clergy.
