The Miracle Prayer Dear Heart of Jesus: In the past, I have asked many favors. This time, I ask you this very special one. Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your father sees it. Then, in your merciful eyes, it will become your favor, not mine. Say this prayer for 3 days, promise publication and your favor will be granted no matter how impossible. Thank you also to the Divine Mercy.

drawn in from the outdoor chill by the aroma of warm, freshly baked pumpkin bread served on trays in the dining room. Looking back, I now wonder if people came for the pumpkin bread as much as for the art being sold. This updated, foolproof recipe is moist, full of enticing autumn spices we love, and it’s super-easy to make and bake with kids. No mixers or tricky steps. Just measure, whisk, stir and bake. Of course, you may put
1/2 cup vegetable oil 1½ cups sugar 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1 cup canned pumpkin 1¾ cups all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 1/2 teaspoon allspice 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 cup water To prepare oven: Heat oven to 350 F. To prepare pan: Place a piece of parchment or wax paper on the bottom of a greased 9-by-5-by-3-inch loaf pan. To prepare batter: Whisk together oil, sugar, eggs and pumpkin in a mixing bowl. Meanwhile, in a separate bowl, sift together flour, cinnamon, cloves, allspice, nutmeg, salt, baking soda and baking powder. Stir dry ingredients into wet ingredients alternatively with the water. (Avoid overmixing.) Pour into pan. To bake: Bake in middle of oven for 60 minutes or until wooden pick or knife inserted in center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes and turn out onto a cooling rack to cool completely. Makes one loaf. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. The motto of the service is Semper Fidelis, meaning “Always Faithful” in Latin. • On Nov. 7, 1914, while World War I rages in Europe, a new weekly magazine, The New Republic, is first published in the United States. Though its first issue sold only 875 copies, after a year the circulation reached 15,000. The New Republic still operates today as a weekly journal of opinion. • On Nov. 8, 1951, Yankees catcher Yogi Berra is voted the American League’s most valuable player. He went on to be the league MVP twice more, in 1954 and 1955. • On Nov. 5, 1968, in one of the closest elections in U.S. history, Republican challenger Richard Nixon defeats Vice President Hubert Humphrey. Because of third-party candidate George Wallace, neither Nixon nor Humphrey received 50% of the vote. • On Nov. 4, 1979, student followers of the Ayatollah Khomeini send shock waves across America when they storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran. The radical Islamic fundamentalists took 90 hostages. • On Nov. 9, 1989, East German officials open the Berlin Wall, allowing free travel from East to West Berlin for the first time since 1961. The next day, celebrating Germans began to tear down one of the ugliest and most infamous symbols of the Cold War. The moment you walk into a To The Pointe Dance Studio, you realize that this “world of dance” is different than any other. The reception area is open and bright with white walls that are decorated with the smiling faces of the studio’s beautiful dancers. You are greeted by TTP staff members who are pleasant and welcoming. Music accompanied by laughter and joyful voices can be heard from afar. The hustle and bustle of the studio is fueled by positive energy and excitement. Dancers at To The Pointe maintain a healthy balance of working hard and being focused on becoming better dancers while enjoying themselves and having fun achieving their goals. They are extremely dedicated to both their craft and the performances that are produced by TTP. Senior dancers at TTP have been seen performing numbers from CATS, ALICE IN WONDERLAND, THE NUTCRACKER, The WOODEN SOLDIER DANCE & many more. They have also performed in Walt Disney World and on cruise ships multiple times. Being able to include fun into their learning process is enhanced by the fact that TTP dancers do not participate in competitions. Rather, they focus on the quality of their theatrical performances as an art form and the expression of their love of dance and of individuality. Dancers begin their journey as young as 18 months of age. “Mommy & Me” classes provide a safe and
inviting environment for these budding ballerinas. Children of any age may begin dancing at any time in their lives. Dancers are encouraged to continue dancing right through their adulthood. To The Pointe offers classes broken down into appropriate age groups. A carefully planned curriculum is designed by TTP’s Director Sheri Masiello who has spent over 25 years cultivating a fun, professional and educational learning plan. This curriculum allows for each level to learn and grow into the dancers and individuals they are meant to become. A variety of dance classes are offered in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Pointe, Lyrical, Contemporary and Hip Hop. Classes are offered to girls and boys, young and wise). To The Pointe is currently in rehearsals for its annual Holiday Spectacular Performance & Toy Drive, held at

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have severe lower back pain and can’t stand up straight or walk very well. I saw a back specialist, and he took X-rays and reviewed an MRI. He informed me nothing could be done for me because I have diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). I would like to know what this is and why nothing can be done for me. — Anon. ANSWER: DISH is essentially a disease of bone spurs. The ligaments and their attachments to bone themselves become calcified and bonelike. The cause is unknown. Symptoms are commonly back pain (more often, middle or upper back, not the lower back pain you have), but pain also may occur in the neck. Problems with walking are not common, but can happen if a nerve is being compressed. Surgery is not a usual treatment for DISH. It is occasionally necessary if the bone spurs press on nerves or if the bone spurs are so large that they interfere with eating. That doesn’t mean nothing can be done for you. Physical therapy may be very beneficial; judicious pain medication and regular gentle exercise are the other effective treatments. If the difficulty standing straight and walking persist, you should get re-evaluated. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your take on the benefits versus risks of DMSO? — W.R. ANSWER: DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) has only one use approved by

the Food and Drug Administration, in people with interstitial cystitis, where it is directly instilled into the bladder. It is also used (off-label, meaning without an official FDA indication) as a recovery treatment when the tube delivering some types of chemotherapy comes out of the vein. DMSO may have a pain-relieving effect, both topically when applied, as well as in the brain, though the mechanism for this is unclear. DMSO is an antioxidant and opens pores in lipid membranes, but again it’s unclear how this relates to its possible effects on people’s symptoms. It is an interesting and difficult-to-study compound. It is exceedingly permeable: Within five minutes of being applied to skin, it is detectable in the blood. It has a distinct flavor and odor that can be noticed after application to the skin, which makes doing a controlled trial difficult; subjects in a study find it very easy to know whether or not they have been given DMSO. It’s estimated that people have spent billions of dollars on DMSO for other conditions, especially arthritis and inflammatory diseases. However, the evidence that it is effective is poor, largely because of the difficulty in doing good studies on this compound, but also because large-scale studies are very expensive and there is little enthusiasm on performing such studies on a cheap compound. The risks appear to be small. Apart from the taste and smell changes, there are rare reports of allergies, discomfort in the bladder after instillation there and possible damage to the eye lens (at least in animals). You didn’t tell me what condition you are considering DMSO for, but except in the case of interstitial cystitis (where there are other therapies more likely to be effective), given uncertain benefits, I don’t recommend DMSO despite the low risk of harm. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu.

How to Choose a Skilled Nursing Facility Selecting a Skilled Nursing Facility for a loved one can be a very stressful and often very overwhelming experience, as well as relieving one once the right facility is found. Most importantly, when doing so make a list of what needs your loved one has that will provide them happiness and longevity. Skilled Nursing Facilities can provide Short-Term Rehabilitation as well as Long Term, Dementia, Hospice, and Respite Care. Depending on the needs of your loved one would help to determine what facility can best provide the most accurate and appropriate care. Take a tour of the potential facility. You should intuitively feel warmth and safety in this environment. This visit will provide you the opportunity to view the atmosphere and the morale of residents and staff. Is the facility clean and without odor? Are the residents socially engaged and appropriately dressed? Is the ratio between staff and residents suitable for needs to be met? Ask for a consultation with the admission staff member to have questions answered on the facility. Some significant questions would involve the financial aspect on what insurance would cover and for how long, private pay rates, and if the facility is Medicaid certified. Inquire who the medi-
cal director is and what the nearest hospital is affiliated with the facility. Ask about outside services available within the facility such as hair care, banking, phone/television, laundry, and ancillary services of dental, podiatry, and optometry. Request information on visiting hours, availability to go to outside appointments and outings, as well as social activities and dining services. Remember this facility will become your loved ones home and all the comforts need to be accessible. Do your research! The Department of Health provides national quality information on nursing homes and allows you to compare the ranking of all nursing homes. Ask your physicians, senior centers, neighbors, family and friends for recommendations. Solicit outside input and impressions on whether a facility would be a good fit for your loved one. Most importantly, trust your intuition once you have gathered all your facts and made all your visits. Choosing a nursing home is never easy when you love someone. It is often harder for the caregiver than the person in need of placement. Let that nursing home help to take care of your love one and in the end that nursing home will also being taking of you.

• You can rewrap a scratching post with sisal rope fairly easily. The rope usually costs only a couple of dollars, and you can use a drop of hot glue to get started and another at the end. Your cat (and your couch) will thank you. • “I’ve been trying to make better choices about the packaging on items I purchase, and I’ve stopped using plastic wrap and baggies for the most part. But there are some items that wax paper or parchment bags can’t handle. But I found a solution: beeswax wrap. It works just like cling wrap, and you can wash it easily. It’s pretty cool and reusable over and over.” — K.G. in Florida • Add a few tablespoons of milk to water that you use to cook cauliflower. It will help it retain its whiteness. • Remove a lettuce core with this swift trick: Set the head of lettuce core side down on a hard surface. Bring the lettuce up and then down swiftly, crushing the core. Turn it over and the core should be easy to remove. Slice as needed. • “I use the wide rubber band from a head of broccoli to keep my dusting cloth attached to my bottle of furniture polish. I have a microfiber cloth that I use several times before washing. I tuck it under the band, and the two items stay together under the sink.” — B. in Oklahoma • “Someone brought a bag of temporary tattoos to a tailgate and the kids (and some of the adults, if I’m being honest) went overboard. We used baby oil to get the residue off the next day. It came off without a fight, thank goodness.” — J.J. in Georgia Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

Halloween is the second most popular holiday among collectors of holiday memorabilia. Christmas comes first. But Halloween decorations are in such demand today that there are even mail-order catalogs and pop-up stores that feature nothing but Halloween. The idea behind Halloween goes back centuries, but the first Halloween parties that resembled modern celebrations were costume parties for adults in the 1880s and 1890s. Costumes from those parties — some of the earliest Halloween collectibles — were almost always homemade. Pressed-paper “veggie people,” jack-o-lanterns and other Halloween decorations were being made by the 1900s, mostly in Germany. By the 1920s, jack-o-lanterns were made of a composition material, holes were made for the eyes and mouth, and a hand-painted piece of paper was glued inside to create a finished face. By the 1950s, Halloween decorations were being made of hard plastic, and in the 1990s a strange sponge-like plastic was popular for soft jack-o-lanterns. Pre-1950 Halloween memorabilia is scarce, so prices are high. But beware: Many reproductions of early paper jack-o-lanterns and Halloween candy containers have been made in Japan. New mail order catalogs sell copies of old pieces along with new life-size witches, ghosts, skeletons and zombies, as well as tombstones, black cats and huge blow-up monsters and spiders. These too will be popular collectibles in a few years. *** I have my grandfather’s black hat. The name in the hat is “Sheldon & Co., London.” It was in a hat box that says “Mallory Hats, Fifth Ave., New York, N.Y.” I think he had the hat when he was a member of the Shriners. Can you give me any information? Both Sheldon & Co. and Mallory were hat makers listed in the 1908 “American Hatter.” G.W. Sheldon & Co. was a maker of felt in 1823. It was the first hat maker in the U.S. and was one of the largest by the early 1900s. E.A. Mallory & Sons became a division of the John B. Stetson Hat Co. in 1946. Production of Mallory hats ceased by 1965. Maybe Mallory sold

Eisenberg’s belt, “The Art of Self-Defense” centers around an aggressively macho karate dojo to which extreme beta male Casey (Eisenberg) turns after being bullied and brutally beaten in the streets. At the dojo, Casey’s confidence increases, and he steps up to attend the rawer, more violent night classes. Here, he is enveloped in a downward spiral of belligerence and mayhem alongside other students, including Imogene Poots as the lone female fighter, Anna.

Stuber (R) — How far would you go for a five-star rating? Stu (Kumail Nanjani) — an Uber driver, hence the “Stuber” — will go pretty dang far. He’s a timid, keepthe-boat steady type who’s desperate to keep his rating in the clear. Stu picks up a fare in the form of physically intimidating but unfortunately visually impaired cop Vic (Dave Bautista). He’s furiously running down a killer, but can’t do the driving himself. • On Nov. 6, 1528, the Spanish conquistador Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca is shipwrecked on a low sandy island off the coast of Texas. Starving, dehydrated and desperate, he is the first European to set foot on the soil of the future Lone Star state. • On Nov. 10, 1775, a resolution, drafted by future U.S. president John Adams, creates the Continental Marines and is now observed as the birth date of the United States Marine Corps. The wall was built to keep a flood of refugees from fleeing Communist East Germany to the West. © 2019 Hearst Communications, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Thanksgiving Novena to
ST. JUDE
O Holy St. Jude Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ. Faithful intercessor of all who invoke this special patronage in time of need. To you I have recourse from the depth of my heart and humbly beg you, to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return, I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. Say three Our Fathers, three Hail Marys and three Glory Be’s. Publication must be promised. St Jude pray for us and all who invoke your aid. Amen. This novena has never been known to fail. It helped me. Thank you St. Jude for answering my prayers.

HOLLYWOOD — Brandon Routh, star of “Superman Returns” (2006), will return again to play the Man of Steel in The CW’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event, which unites some famous DC comic book superheroes — a la “Avengers: Endgame.” Routh’s Superman, now graying at the temples, will fly through “Supergirl” (Sunday, Dec. 8), “Batwoman” (Dec. 9), “The Flash” (Dec. 10) and “Arrow” (Jan. 14), followed by the finale, “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” (also Jan. 14). Along the way, Tom Welling (“Smallville”) and Tyler Hoechlin (“Arrow”) also will appear. *** At long last, Glenn Close will re-create her 1994 Tony Award-winning performance as Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical “Sunset Boulevard.” Close was 47 when she first played the forgotten film star, and 69 when it was revived on Broadway in 2016. Now 72, Close has grown into the role and is “Ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMille.” Prior to starting “Sunset Boulevard,” Close has completed “Four Good Days,” with Mila Kunis, and Ron Howard’s Netflix film “Hillbilly Elegy,” with Amy Adams. *** Mel Gibson’s sequel, “The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection,” with Jim Caviezel again as Christ, is due December 2020. Mel should reconsider his release date because director Terrence Malick is shooting “The Last Planet,” also about the life of Christ, with Geza Rohrig (of “Son of Saul”) as Jesus and Mark Rylance as four versions of Satan, plus Ben Kingsley, Joseph Fiennes and Douglas Booth. Mel has completed shooting the sci-fi thriller “Boss Level,” with Frank Grillo and Naomi Watts, playing a man trapped in a never ending time loop, and “Waldo,” with Charlie Hunnam. Clint Eastwood’s latest directorial effort is “Richard Jewell,” about the security guard at the Centennial Olympic Park who discovered a plot to bomb the 1996 Olympics. Despite trying to evacuate civilians, he was considered a prime suspect. In the title

role is Paul Walter Hauser, an actor and stand-up comedian best known as Shawn in “I, Tonya,” Ivanhoe in “BlacKkKlansman” and the TV series “Kingdom.” Hauser is aided and abetted by Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates, Olivia Wilde and Jon Hamm. “Richard Jewell” drops Dec. 13. *** Tom Hanks, already receiving Oscar nomination talk for playing Mr. (Fred) Rogers in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” (out Nov. 22), also has completed the war film “Greyhound,” with Elisabeth Shue (due May 8); “BIOS,” a sci-fi film with Hanks as the last man on Earth, who builds a robot for company; and the Wild West drama “News of the World” (opening Dec. 25, 2020). Hanks has starred in 62 films, produced 26 films, written five films, directed three films, won two Oscars, eight Emmys, four Golden Globes, a Kennedy Center Honors, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the French Legion of Honor. 1. Weird Al Yankovic did a parody of the Kinks’ “Lola.” What did he call it? 2. Sam the Sham (of the Pharaohs) changed one of his songs halfway through writing it and instead named it after his cat. Which song? 3. Name the Heart album that came out in 2010. 4. Who penned and released “Just When I Needed You Most”? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “Take these broken wings and learn to fly, All your life you were only waiting for this moment to arise.” Answers 1. “Yoda.” He based it on “The Empire Strikes Back” film. It took five years to get Star Wars creator George Lucas to give permission for its release. 2. “Wooly Bully,” started out as a re-do of “Hully Gully Now.” Sam riffed his way through multiple versions, including the English-Spanish intro. 3. “Red Velvet Car.” The album contained 10 tracks in the U.S., 12 tracks in Europe, and 13 in Japan. 4. Randy VanWarmer, in 1979. One of the most underrated songwriters of all time, he later moved to Nashville and penned a string of country hits. 5. “Blackbird,” by the Beatles in 1968. Paul McCartney has given multiple reasons over the years for writing the song, one being as a comment on U.S. race relations in the 1960s. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q:
I recently saw some episodes of “The Day I Picked My Parents” on the A&E channel about the foster care system. Will it be returning? If so, when? — B.H. I hadn’t heard of this series until just now, but I’m going to have to put it on my must-see list. For those who don’t know, “The Day I Picked My Parents” is a documentary series about 10 foster kids who are given the chance to choose their forever families through an organization called Kidsave. Older children, ages 9 through 18, statistically are harder to place, and many age out of the foster care system without ever having been adopted. Partnering up with the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services, Kidsave aims to “turn the adoption process on its head” by giving these kids the chance to find parents who are the right fit for them. I would imagine you have to keep a box of Kleenex handy while watching this show. Since there has been only one season so far, I’ll keep my fingers crossed that there will be a second, but as of yet an official renewal hasn’t been announced. If you can’t find episodes in your local guide, be sure to check them out online at www.aetv.com/ shows/the-day-I-picked-my-parents. *** Has “Criminal Minds” been canceled? I haven’t seen any new episodes since the fall season premiered. — M.M. CBS’ “Criminal Minds” has had a very successful run. It began in 2005 with Mandy Patinkin in the lead, but he left after two seasons due to creative differences. He famously stated at one time: “CBS is very clear about their formula for success with these kinds of shows. One doesn’t want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. But it is important for this baby to have a certain kind of food to make me stay interested.” The crime series survived for a long time with several cast changes over the years. However, last season CBS decided to renew “Criminal Minds” for one final season of 10 episodes. It’s not on the fall schedule but will return some-

time during the winter or spring of 2020. In the meantime, “S.W.A.T.” currently occupies the 10 p.m. timeslot on Wednesday nights and stars another former “Criminal Minds” cast member, Shemar Moore. *** What is Alison Sweeney doing now that she’s not hosting “The Biggest Loser”? — T.B. Sweeney still pops up occasionally on “Days of Our Lives” as Sami, the role she grew up playing on the NBC soap. She became known outside of the daytime soap world for hosting “The Biggest Loser” for eight years, but stepped down in 2015. The busy star also has done many TV movies over the years, and next up she’ll play a widow opposite Lucas Bryant in “Time for You to Come Home for Christmas” on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. TO OUR READERS And Advertisers... We’d like to thank you for your ongoing support. “The Reminder”.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Financial matters once again figure in any major action you might take regarding career, travel or other endeavors. You’ll want a ready reserve to help you back up those moves. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Trying to resolve a problem in a personal relationship could be more difficult than you’d expected. Look into the possibility that someone might be interfering for his or her own reasons. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A project you once rejected might be more attractive because of changes that you feel you can now work with. The weekend is especially favorable to family matters. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a good week for the gregarious Goat to enjoy being with people you care for. You might even want to show off those creative kitchen skills you’re so adept at. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A colleague might think your attitude is patronizing or even outright insulting. True. That might be his or her problem. But you might want to take some reassuring steps anyway. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to jettison those old concepts about a family matter you might have been holding on to. This will help make room for a new and more enlightened way of dealing with it. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to analyze a puzzling situation before you try to resolve it. This makes you excel at getting things done the right way. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Rams and Ewes might want to shear their big spending plans until a more favorable financial picture begins to emerge by week’s end. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Thrift counts both at home and at work. So you might want to rethink major purchases or investments. Also, be wary of a so-called revelation about a previous decision. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Both household budgets and workplace accounts might benefit from some judicious trimming of unnecessary expenses. A partnership could lead to an unexpected challenge. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A previously overlooked opportunity could re-emerge with a new travel-related matter. Check this out carefully to see if it’s what you really want before you decide one way or another.
