In my most recent column, that was an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Most adults with an ascending TAA are recommended for surgical repair at a diameter of 5.5 cm. However, if the aneurysm is rapidly expanding, sur gery may be considered earlier. If a person has a medical illness, making surgery very risky, surgeons may wait until the size exceeds 6 cm. The deci sion on when to operate requires judgement from an experienced sur geon and cardiologist. This is a major surgery with potential for harm,

When we first started using them [at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center], we observed osteonecrosis of the jaw in about 10% of treated patients. We quickly realized we could reduce the risk by using them less frequently and by having our patients see dentists to ensure hygiene before we start. With these considerations, the inci dence of osteonecrosis of the jaw with bisphosphonates (or denos umab) has dropped to less than 1%. These medicines are very import ant for patients with cancers that have spread to bone, and we don’t want people afraid of these very effective agents that are safe when used correctly. — D.H.

One that you’ve worked so hard, for so many years to achieve – so why not plan for it and make your retirement one to enjoy?Sometimes life gets busy and retirement planning might not start as early as it could or should have. It’s never too late to get started, so let’s look at a quick retirement planning checklist to help you along the way.

Checklist for Retirement PART I

It is important to do a 12-month cycle to ensure capturing any annual expenses. Also, you should deduct any “one-time” expenses, and we encourage clients to include annual travel/ vacation amounts to help budget for an enjoyable retirement. Most of our clients tell us this takes about 15 to 20 minutes to advantage of

— Preschoolers: Set out a piece of paper, fold it in half and let your preschooler stamp or attach stick ers of images on the front side of the paper that are symbolic of things they enjoyed doing with the recipients, such as eating ice cream cones, going to the beach or catching fish off a dock. Prompt your child to dictate a thankyou message that you write inside.
