Our hair always looks and feels its best when it’s moisturized. That’s why deep conditioning treatments have become a popular service for many people, regardless of their hair type or style.

If you’ve ever done anything to your hair, like tied it up, braided it, or used any styling product, you probably also need to do a deep conditioning treatment every now and then.

There are so many bene ts of deep conditioning treatments. The rst bene t is that they moisturize the individual strands of your hair. Which helps improve your hair texture keeping your hair healthy and nourished. They help prevent breakage by keeping your hair moisturized and healthy, which makes it less likely for you to have breakage. Deep conditioning treatments add a lot of shine to your hair. Not only can a good deep conditioning treatment help your hair from the inside, it also makes your hair’s appearance look and even feel much better.

Frizz can be greatly reduced from a deep conditioning. Dry hair and humid environments together are the perfection conditions for frizzy hair.

When your hair is dry and the air around it is not, your strands tend to get up and try to nd moisture around it, make them appear frizzy. By keeping

your hair well-moisturized, there’s no need for your strands to sought out moisture elsewhere.

Keratin treatments are di erent way to treat hair compared to a deep conditioning treatment. They are an in salon chemical process that aim to repair dry and damaged hair.

Results from a keratin can last anywhere from three to six months, provided that you follow all recommendations and use the proper products. Which is better a deep conditioning treatment or a keratin treatment?

Not all deep conditioning treatments are keratin

treatments, but all keratin treatments are deep conditioning treatments.

A keratin treatment will give you more of a smoothing and deep-conditioning e ect than just a deep conditioning treatment alone.

We o er both keratin and deep conditioning treatments. The month of October we will be o ering keratin treatments for $165.

Call 401-821-1181 to schedule an appointment for either service. Coventry.

How to prepare your car for winter

Summer and fall can stake their claim as road trip season, and even devoted drivers may admit that winter is generally a less desirable time to take to the open road. The elements factor heavily into that reputation, as fewer hours of daylight, snow and ice are just some of the variables that can make it less enjoyable, and potentially more dangerous, to drive in winter. In anticipation of adverse driving conditions, vehicle owners can take various steps to prepare their cars and trucks for winter.

• Upgrade your wiper blades. Perhaps nothing is compromised more than visibility when driving in winter compared to other times of year. Snow makes it hard to see when driving, but fewer hours of daylight also can a ect visibility. In fact, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that approximately half of all fatal crashes occur between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., even though the number of drivers on the road during those hours is considerably lower than it is during the daytime. The di culty of driving at night is even more signi cant when wiper blades are not up to the task of keeping rain and snow o drivers’ windshields. Prior to winter, inspect wiper blades and upgrade them, if necessary. Streaks left on a windshield are a telltale sign that blades need to be replaced.

• Purchase winter tires. Winter tires may not be necessary in regions with relatively mild winters. However, drivers accustomed to winters marked by heavy snowfall and/or icy roads should consider replacing their existing tires with

winter tires. Many newer vehicles are now equipped with all-season tires, which the tire experts at Bridgestone note provide great performance but are not designed to handle extreme winter conditions like snow and ice.

Winter tires are specially designed to handle such conditions, making them a worthy investment for drivers who live in regions where it’s not unusual to encounter snow and ice throughout the winter.

• Study up on your engine oil. Some vehicle manufacturers recommend di erent grades of oil depending on the range of temperatures a car or truck will be driven in. The owner’s manual will likely indicate if the manufacturer recommends using a di erent type of engine oil in especially cold temperatures. Even if the manual does not include such a suggestion, drivers can seek the advice of a local mechanic.

• Schedule a pre-winter tuneup. Even if a vehicle is not due for a tuneup, it can be wise to have it looked over by a local mechanic before the arrival of harsh winter weather. A mechanic can check the radiator, hoses and other components that could be a ected by especially cold weather in the months to come. If any issues are found, address them immediately. After all, it’s better to be proactive than leave yourself vulnerable to breakdowns or other issues once the mercury drops.

As fall gives way to winter, drivers can take steps to keep their cars running strong and safe in the months ahead.

7 uses for fallen leaves

By the time autumn hits full swing, many trees will have shed their leaves for the season, and the last vestiges of red, yellow and orange magic will have faded to brown. Raking, blowing and collecting leaves becomes the primary chores of lawn and yard maintenance, and presents most homeowners with large piles of gathered leaves to tend to.

It is impossible to count just how many leaves fall to the ground each year, or just how many pounds of leaves get collected curbside, but the numbers are substantial. Cleaning up leaves is considerable work, but not all of those leaves need to be carted away. In fact, there are several di erent uses of leaves that can be bene cial.

1. Spread leaves as a protective mulch to cover tender perennials or root crops/bulbs in the ground. The leaves will form a natural insulating cover that keeps the soil and the plants within a bit warmer over winter.

2. Create a pile of leaves that will break down and form a crumbly, compost-like material called leaf mold. Even though leaf mold may sound like a blight, it’s actually a good amendment to garden soil, improving its structure and ability to hold water. Leaf mold also attracts bene cial organisms that are vital in healthy soil.

3. Brown leaves can be added to green materials in compost piles to improve the health of the compost being formed. According to the healthy living resource Care2, the ideal ratio is 75 percent brown to 25 percent green materials in compost. Turn compost piles regularly to aerate them.

4. Store dried, mulched leaves in a dry spot so they can be used in the spring as a weed barrier for spring plantings. They will keep weeds at bay and help

retain soil moisture to ensure small sprouts have the resources to grow.

5. Use shredded leaves as a lawn supplement. Pass a lawn mower over leaves left on the lawn to break them down into pieces too small to rake. This will help keep the lawn healthy throughout the winter without blocking out needed sunlight.

6. Bag dried leaves and pack them tightly together in cold areas of the home, such as basements or garages. They can act as added insulation. Bags of leaves also can be placed around planting containers to protect them from frost.

7. Gather a few of the best-looking leaves and preserve them. Use an iron on a low setting and press leaves between two pieces of waxed paper until the waxed paper seals together. Or use clear contact paper to achieve the same e ect.

Fallen leaves can be used in many di erent ways throughout the year.

What’s new in Real Estate

With the Season changing so does the Real Estate market.

As we head into Fall and Holiday Season, we may think it isn’t a good time to buy or sell a home.

Statistically, residential listing activity tends to slow over the winter months. ………

According to data from State-Wide Multiple Listing Service, although there is a slight increase in single family listings coming out of the pandemic, we continue to show low inventory in residential home categories. Currently there are 1115 active and coming soon single family listings in MLS which is approximately 1.8 months of inventory. In a balanced market we’d have a 6 month supply

Home prices continue to increase, however at a lower pace over the past few months.

We’ve experienced several rate hikes and are anticipating more, causing affordability issues for prospective buyers. To combat the increase, buyers and their lenders are strategically working on ways to keep their monthly payments down by buying points at closing, putting more money down on the loans, getting assistance from family etc.

If you are a buyer in today’s market it is wise to have your “Ducks in a Row”. Be prepared with a pre approval from a reputable lender and meet with a Realtor to discuss what to expect with the purchase process and your financial responsibilities throughout the transaction.

If a new listing comes on the market in your price range, be prepared to get there quickly before it sells. As they say…he/she who hesitates is lost!

Once you find a home you’d love to purchase, make that offer with your Realtor.

Every transaction is situational, so there is no cookie cutter strategy to making a successful offering. Know the seller’s circumstances and plan accordingly with your Realtor.

The terms of your offer are as important as the number you are offering. How you are paying for the property…Type of loan, cash, etc. How soon can you close? Some sellers may want to close quickly; others may need to find suitable housing prior to closing. If you have time flexibility that the seller needs, perhaps a focus of that may make your offer attractive. Some

sellers, especially a senior seller transaction, may not have the ability to remove all contents from the home prior to closing. Maybe allowing the items to remain and you clean out after purchasing will be received well when the seller analyses offers. Not all sellers are looking for $20,000 over asking price. Although the number may be attractive, some will be concerned about appraisal value.

Be realistic with your offer, especially if the property is a “Hot” one and in multiple offer situation. Planning to lowball your offer when the seller has other options is not going to be a successful strategy. The seller will look at serious buyer offers instead of yours and you will be disappointed to lose the opportunity.

Avoid looking at properties outside your affordable price range. If a listing is new to the market and priced at fair market value, the seller will likely get

their price or perhaps more. It is best to keep your search within your price and concentrate on those you can comfortably make a strong offer having a better chance of getting it accepted.

If you are a seller, hopefully working with a professional, be prepared to sell and close when you list your home.

With low inventory and plentiful buyers out there, it is likely you will have early activity if your property is in good condition and priced within fair market value. Buyers are anxious, but also savvy to the market conditions.

If you have to purchase a property prior to closing on your current home, be prepared accordingly as discussed above. Your transaction on the sell side could be contingent upon you finding suitable housing, which is fine, but consider the buyer who will have to determine how long they can wait. They will have rate lock time constraints and may be concerned about rate increases which will affect their affordability.

Likewise, if you make an offer on a property to purchase contingent upon closing on your current home prior to closing the purchase, that seller will consider your time frame for closing ability as well. Your offer will be best received if your property is already on the market and preferably under contract.

If you are a Senior seller and hoping to avoid another Winter in your home, this is a great time to get started on you plan. Transitioning from your current home into a “Rightsized Lifestyle” for you will require planning. Contact a professional to assist with a solid plan to reach your goals. A Senior Real Estate Specialist can be a good resource for your specific needs.

As you can see from these various scenarios, it is important to seek professional help when either buying or selling in today’s environment. Going it alone may seem less restrictive but your success in reaching your goals is greater with assistance of a professional.

Thank you, good luck and Happy Fall!!!

How to spot mold in

METRO

Homes are safe havens and relaxing spaces for their residents. No one wants to imagine the place they call home putting their health in jeopardy, but that’s pre cisely the case for people who live in homes where mold is present.

The United States En vironmental Protection Agency notes that molds are not usually a prob lem indoors. However, when they are, molds produce allergens, ir ritants and potentially toxic substances. Molds can become problem atic when spores land on wet or damp surfaces and begin growing. If in haled, those spores can cause allergic reactions in people with asthma who have mold allergies. Even people without such allergies may suffer from irritated eyes, skin, nose, throat, or lungs

due to exposure to mold. Mold also can affect the home itself, as the EPA notes that mold gradu ally destroys the things it grows on, potentially leading to costly reme diation and renovation expenses.

Mold is sometimes vis ible in parts of a home. For example, mold prob lems in a bathroom may be recognizable when tiny black spots are pres ent on surfaces that fre quently get wet. Those areas may gradually ex pand from small spots and cover larger areas, such as windowsills and areas around the bath tub. Other signs indicat ing the presence of mold may be less recognizable though potentially just as harmful. That’s one reason why it makes sense for everyone to learn how to spot mold in a home.

• Learn what mold

looks like. Not all molds are black. Some are white and look like thread, but they also can have a gray-brown or gray-green tint. When peeling old wallpaper, some people may notice orange, pink or purple growth on the newly ex posed walls, and that’s likely mold.

• Identify problems with paint. If paint is peeling, bubbling or cracking, it’s likely indic ative of a mold issue. In such instances, contact a mold remediation spe cialist rather than simply painting over the affect ed areas with a fresh coat of paint.

• Conduct a smell test. Most molds will emit a damp, musty odor. However, a lack of this distinct and unpleasant smell should not lead individuals to conclude they don’t have a mold issue, as some molds do

Did you know?

Despite its reputation as the most formidable type of mold individuals can find in their homes, black mold is similar to other indoor molds in regard to its effects on human health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, black mold, or stachybotrys chartarum, isn’t any more harmful than other types of mold, including cladosporium, penicillium, aspergillus, and alternaria. The reputation of black mold, which can look black or greenish-black, likely has something to do with its appearance. But homeowners still have reason to be fearful of mold in their homes, regardless of what color the mold may be. That’s because mold can lead to a host of unwelcome health problems, including stuffy nose, sore throat, coughing or wheezing, burning eyes, or skin rash. Symptoms may be even worse for people with asthma and mold allergies.

not produce an odor. In addition, the EPA notes that the smell of indoor molds can differ depend ing on the type of mold present in the home. Homeowners who have experienced mold issues in the past should not ig nore a foul odor simply because it smells differ ent from a previous in festation. Contact a mold remediation profession al if you suspect an un pleasant smell could be a byproduct of mold. Mold can be harmful to homes and humans. Anyone who suspects their home has a mold problem is urged to contact a remediation specialist as soon as pos sible. TF229304

It has been 1 year since my father, Vincenzo Feroce, locked up his barber shop for the last time. Often referred to as simply“Vinny the Barber”, he was a staple in the Coventry community for over 50 years. Arriving here as an adolescent, he worked tirelessly to achieve the American dream. Which he did, one haircut at a time. And in doing so he became a part of so many lives. What I am grateful to have come to understand since his passing a year ago, is that his customers were such an important part of his life. The time they shared as lives unfolded and shifted over the years brought him joy, a deep sense of connection, and friendship. When he would say in his Italian accent that he had “just-a one more” customer, he was saying that his customers were important to him, that he enjoyed seeing them, enjoyed being their barber and wasn’t going to let them down.

Vinny took pride in being the best in his profession. He was especially proud to have had so many first responders, state troopers, police officers and police chiefs to count among his favorites. On this anniversary, I wanted to share with you the most beautiful eulogy that anyone could ask for, one that captures what was at the very essence of who Vinny was and how his hard work touched so many lives written by a name I heard many times over the years.

Thank you, Colonel John McDonald, Retired Chief of Police and current Colonel in the RI National Guard, Brigade Commander of 56th Troop Command and State Army Aviation Officer.

“Hello Vinny’s” are the familiar words I’ve heard at least a thousand times over the last twenty five years when I would call the barber shop to make an appointment for a haircut. Vinny suddenly left us this week and my sincere condolences go out to Vinny’s family and to the hundreds of people who called him a friend and their barber.

For many, Vinny the Barber has been part of the fabric of our lives. I started visiting Vinny in 1995 when I was 24 years old and fresh out of the Police Academy. As soon as he cut my hair once, I knew I had found my guy. And Vinny was “the guy” to so many people who knew what a talented, old school barber he was for so many decades. Once you discovered Vinny, there was no going back.

More than his precise haircut, I will miss him and the feeling of comfortable routine visiting for a haircut. A trip to Vinny’s Barber shop was visiting an Old Italian Uncle. Cosmo the old crazy dog would greet you at the door barking when you came in and barking even louder for some reason when you went to leave as if you disturbed him during nap time in the living room. Vinny would shout a greeting to you above his barking and the normal sounds of some Italian TV station playing in the background. Usually, either an international soccer game or an Italian cooking or game show.

I will miss hearing the familiar sound of his clippers, the sound of that old hot shaving cream machine, and smell of the alcohol cologne he would use at the end of a cut. Some say barbers are like our psychologists, they not only cut our hair, but also share life experiences with us. I am sure Vinny the Barber heard his fair share of stories over 50 years of cutting hair. We talked about our families, weddings, births, promotions, town gossip and all the heartbreaks with his customary eyebrow raised “hey” if a topic was a little controversial or funny. I brought my son in to see him for his long overdue first haircut. Not his first rodeo, Vinny’s first words, “Does his mom know” and was a little hesitant to go to short.

As he got older, he more often would tell me about someone he knew from town who passed away that he had known back in the day. Sometimes though, he would cut your hair in silence as if he knew the day had been long and you needed to just check out for a while. If it was near a holiday, he might say “how about a shot” as he walked you to the door. Vinny always has some good liqueurs or Italian candy at the ready on a special occasion. He would add an “alla salute” before and toast our health. I often wondered around Christmas time after a few how steady his hand was wielding that straight razor, but he rarely if ever left a nick or a hair out of place.

This week and next week I would bet that Vinny’s phone will be ringing off the hook. Many will have missed his passing just in the everyday busy pace of life. I will surely miss his haircuts, but more than anything I will miss him. Riposare in pace my friend.

Cosmo the Dog 2008-2021 Cosmo died peacefully one week after his father passed, lucky to be lovingly held by Erin, his Guardian Angel. How Cosmo came to live with Vinny is a classic tale. His mom ran off to marry a handsome stranger. Little did anyone know that the Barber Shop life was a great fit for this quirky dog. R.I.P.

“Sidney” (PG-13) — Produced by Oprah Winfrey, this documentary covers the life of the late legendary actor Sidney Poitier. With a humble beginning in the Bahamas, Poitier immigrated to Miami and found that he had a completely different per spective about race than those in the United States during the 1950s. When launching his acting career, Poitier refused to play roles that minimized or disrespected Black people because of the color of their skin. He instead chose roles that allowed him to main tain his power. In that choice, Poitier paved the way for others to follow in his footsteps, not just in a filmmaking capacity, but, in a societal capacity as well. “Sidney” premieres Sept. 23. (Apple TV+)

Home holiday decorating ideas

The holidays often involve purchas ing gifts for close friends and loved ones as well as making a delicious meal the entire family will love. But nothing sets the holiday scene and overall mood more so than beau tiful decorations and other seasonal accou trements.

Many people leave no room un touched for the holidays, meaning color schemes or trinkets may carry through from top to bottom. Decking the halls this season can be made even easier with some of these handy ideas.

Holiday timeline

GENERATORS: Transfer switches installed. Master Electrician. RI #A4602. Insured. Call Jay, 826-2826.

If you keep holiday photo cards each year, put them in chronological order and hang them from a piece of garland from the man tel or drape on a staircase banister. This can be a fun way to see how your own children or other members of the family have grown.

Make mini evergreen displays

Clip your favorite pieces of evergreen and push the stems into floral foam. Display in small vases or other containers and place in groupings to emulate an evergreen forest.

Plan the outside

Exterior illumination and other exterior dec orations share the holiday spirit with others. It can be overwhelming trying to visualize it all without a plan in place. Take a photo of the house and map out where you want lights and decorations to go. Then with your “map” in hand, you can more readily pur chase supplies and start decorating.

Go for a specific natural color scheme

If you desire an overall holiday feel but ar en’t interested in Santa figurines or kitschy

elements, decorating with color in mind can be key. It’s easy to tie things together with some natural elements in your desired pal ette. For example, white, gold and green may look beautiful. Put boxwood clippings and white amaryllis flowers together. Pine cones, twigs and holly pieces also can add touches to mantels, doorways and table centerpieces.

Ornaments elsewhere

Who says ornaments only have to go on a tree? Display antique or favorite ornaments by hanging them from beautiful ribbons throughout the home.

Scent the scene

Hang something aromatic on the tree to mingle with the pine. Fresh cinnamon sticks tied with twine or ribbon can be nestled among the boughs. Another scented idea is to make pine cone candles and use pine or cinnamon scents to make them smell just like the season.

Holiday decorating gets a hand from some creative ideas. Always follow safety precautions, especially when using candles, hanging lights and plugging in multiple items to electric sockets. With ingenuity and safety in mind, holiday decorations can be extra special.

Brownies

Comic characters are often used as models for toys, because they are already favorites of children. One group of toys was based on children’s books by Palmer Cox (1840-1924), an author who was born in Quebec, Canada, and lived in Panama and San Francisco as a railroad contractor and carpenter.

Around 1874, he began to study drawing and write and illustrate sto ries. Cox published his first Brownies in 1879. The Brownies were in many magazines, including Ladies’ Home Journal and a tobacco journal. Most Brownies were in books of humorous verse, comic strips, story books, and even on a cigar box label.

Each Brownie has a personality and trade, and was dressed appropriately for his job. You can see Uncle Sam, a policeman, Irish man, sailor and even a man in a top hat among the figures in the game of ten pins. Each figure is 12 inches high, made of lithographed paper over wood.

Brownies were so popular they were featured as paper dolls, trade cards, rubber stamps, card games, puzzles and cloth dolls. They were decorations on carpets, wallpaper, china, glass ware and tableware. This boxed game of Brownie ten pins was estimated at $300 to $400 at a recent Bertoia auc tion and sold for $354, while a set in excellent condition would sell for $700 to $1,000.

Q:A reader (T.K.) sent us an interesting answer to a ques tion we published previously: “Does the old liquor in an old mid-1800s whiskey bottle add to the value? Is it safe to drink? Is it legal to sell the whiskey in an old whiskey bottle if you are not licensed by your state?”

A:There are different rules about selling whiskey in the states. A long stay in a glass bottle should not change the whiskey the way storage in an oak barrel does, but if it is opened, it probably should not be served. But our reader says there are collectors who

pay lots of money for old, unopened, full whiskey bottles. They are called “dusties,” and some collectors hunt for them in liquor stores. The writer knows someone who sold filled bot tles of bourbon to a shop owner who sells “pours” to customers.

TIP: If you use valuable glass or pottery vases for flowers, use dried plants unless you protect the vase. Put a smaller glass vase inside to hold the water and the flowers. Hard water will leave a stain on pottery or glass.

Call the Roof Assistance Hotline at 401-954-9012 to learn how you may qualify to replace your old roof for $5,000-$6,000 of your own personal funds, regardless of roof size.

This is not a loan or a grant so there is no application to fill out and no home appraisal required. Qualifying is strictly based on a free assessment of your current roof.

Who this program is for:

1. Homeowners with medium, large or extra-large roofs

2. This program is not based on financial hardship. In fact, many homeowners that we assist are considered somewhat affluent

3. Homeowners with a roof that is between 10-35 years old are ideal

Who this program is NOT for:

1. Homeowners with smaller than average roofs

2. Homeowners that have replaced sections of their roof over the years, piece by piece

3. Homeowners with roofs that are less than 10 years old

4. Homeowners that a have a roof in absolutely terrible condition that probably needed to be replaced many, many years ago

“I received something indicating that it was possible to replace my roof for a fraction of the actual cost. Now, my roof was over 13 years old and I thought no way, but what the hell I’ll call and find out more. Best phone call I have ever made. These guys have a system that was a joy to watch. I could go on and on I mean these guys saved me $15,000. So do yourself a favor, if you need a new roof call them first.”
