Great Work

by the ccfd board.

THE CENTRAL COVENTRY FIRE DISTRICT IS COMPLETELY DEBT FREE They have replaced both fire trucks and the reserve truck. We now have two, brand new, fully equipped rescues and the boat on Johnson’s Pond has been replaced. The heating systems in our stations have been updated and our excess buildings and equipment have been sold. None of this was possible when Scott Guthrie was your State Rep. WHY? Because he kept introducing legislation to increase our taxes without upgrading the vital emergency services. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

ST. JUDE

O Holy St. Jude Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ. Faithful intercessor of all who invoke this special patronage in time of need. To you I have recourse from the depth of my heart and humbly beg you, to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return, I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. Say three Our Fathers, three Hail Marys and three Glory Be’s. Publication must be promised. St Jude pray for us and all who invoke your aid. Amen. This novena has never been known to fail. It helped me. Thank you St. Jude for answering my prayers.

rainy season. "C" reminds us to gather clothes to take to Goodwill, and "D" to deliver "Meals on Wheels." Scanning down the alphabet to "M," I've already released the monarch butterfly my 16-month-old granddaughter and I observed pop out of its chrysalis. Soon, I'll be shifting attention to "Z," a reminder to compose a colorful zinnia bouquet from our garden before the snow falls.

Fall Family Living A-Z

It's officially fall. Kids storm through the front door after school and toss their backpacks in the hallway; you're just home from work, and there's dinner to be made and maybe soccer practice or piano lessons to get to after the last bite. Sounds like a busy routine. How do you choose which extra family fun stuff to fit in on your calendar along with a few must-dos? I've discovered with my kids and friends in their bubble that the basic ABC's can provide a simple, creative framework for visually highlighting the essentials: family outings, household repairs, discoveries and activities. This year, my list includes not only must-do chores, but also fall excursions, new foods to try, service opportunities and family adventures. The only caveat is that you need to find an open alphabet letter to describe the event. That helps keep all the ideas and inspiration under control.

Here's how it works:

I listed all 26 alphabet letters on a medium-size white board hanging in our kitchen. Engage your child to make the A-Z list. Events and activities are described by their corresponding letter. Friends who drop by add ideas they would like to do with us, too. For example, our 8-year-old neighbor was eager for me to teach him how to make applesauce with the new crop of Honeycrisp apples that had arrived at our farmer's market last weekend. I brought out our peeler gadget for him to crank out slices for the kid-friendly recipe. Check off "A." The "B" is noted with "build a berm around our foundation," to prevent a wet basement during the continuing

"A" is for apple. An 8-year old peels, cores and slices Honeycrisp apples for making applesauce. No need to end a first round of A-Z activities when seasons change. Check off what has been accomplished and enjoyed, then erase or simply add a new event. Spelling out in detail from A-Z what has been done, and what is left to do, will continue to serve as a visual reminder to family of your active, giving and community-involved lifestyle. By the way, good luck finding ideas for Q's and U's! *** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide. don’t combine. Egg yolks provide a rich, creamy base, while adding lemon juice or vinegar to the mayonnaise emulsion also helps deter any bacteria growth. Using the highest quality eggs ensures that safety concerns are reduced to a minimum. All the ingredients for making mayonnaise, especially the eggs, need to be at room temperature. Take everything out at least 30 minutes before you begin. The lecithin in the egg yolks also helps to stabilize the emulsion ingredients, and lutein adds an important antioxidant that helps to maintain healthy vision. The key to making an emulsion is adding the oil in a slow, steady stream. The type of oil used in the emulsion changes the flavor of the mayonnaise.

Give Mayonnaise That Personal Touch I spend hours every day thinking about food. I’m the director of a non-profit health outreach organization and a certified health worker tasked with sourcing and distributing food and essential supplies to underserved neighborhoods impacted by COVID-19. I’m also a chef, healthy food product developer, food writer and cookbook author with a passion for using unique ingredients — produce, meats, herbs and spices — to create recipes as the focus of my work to use food as medicine. Sometimes, all those hours concentrating on food become a problem when it comes to figuring out what I want to eat. When that happens, I turn to a simple, satisfying solution — I make myself a sandwich. It’s the perfect, versatile, hand-held meal for any time of the day! Sandwiches range from slices of beef, turkey, chicken or seafood on whole-wheat bread to roasted vegetables stuffed in a pita. Dressings, spreads and sauces can add a delicious depth and complexity to a typical sandwich and completely change its flavor profile. A mealtime sandwich suddenly becomes more interesting with the addition of a beautifully flavored mayonnaise. Adding herbs, spices or fruit to homemade or a good-quality store-bought mayonnaise changes the flavor and can be made to complement a wide range of meats, seafood and vegetables. Mayonnaise is made by creating an emulsion, in this case oil and egg yolks, two ingredients that normally

Do not use unrefined oils containing monoglycerides or extra-virgin olive oil, as the flavor is too strong, and the emulsion will separate. For best results, use regular olive oil, or combine it with vegetable oil. Use this basic recipe for mayonnaise, and then add your favorite combination of herbs, spices and other ingredients to create a spread that will add a special zip to your sandwiches.

BASIC MAYONNAISE For best results, avoid making mayonnaise during wet or humid weather, as it will affect the emulsion and the mayonnaise will have a greasy texture. For a richer mayo, use only the egg yolks. 1 egg yolk 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard 1/4 teaspoon sugar 1/2 cup vegetable oil 1/2 cup olive oil

teaspoons lemon juice or white-wine vinegar 2 teaspoons hot water 1. Using a food processor, blender or mixer set on medium speed, combine the egg yolk, salt, dry mustard and sugar until well-blended and a pale yellow. 2. With the motor running, slowly drizzle the oils (1/4 cup at a time) into the yolk mixture in a slow, steady stream. Drizzle in 1 tablespoon of the lemon juice and a teaspoon of the hot water. Continue to alternate mixing in the oil and the lemon juice until all the ingredients have been combined. The finished mayonnaise will be thick. If a thinner consistency is desired, whisk in 1 or 2 teaspoons of hot water. 3. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour before using to let the flavors blend. The mayonnaise will keep about 4 to 5 days. Yield: 1 1/4 cups. The following additions add a unique flavor to this basic mayonnaise recipe: Spices: saffron, paprika, cumin, mustard, coriander, chilies, horseradish/wasabi, ground ginger, curry powder and nutmeg. Herbal Flavors: dill, parsley, basil, oregano, sage, cilantro, chives, chervil. Other Flavors: grated lemon or orange zest, chutney, sun-dried tomatoes, capers, anchovy paste, pureed avocado, roasted red peppers, lime juice, ground dried wild mushrooms, pesto sauce, barbeque sauce, hot sauce, pureed mango or crushed pineapple, soy or Worcestershire sauce, honey mustard, minced garlic, purple or green onions, olives, diced sweet or dill pickles. Oil Substitutions: Infused olive oils, sweet almond oil, canola oil, safflower oil, avocado oil. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian, and the author of seven cookbooks. How to remove mildew from your home’s exterior Homeowners want their residences to look inviting inside and out. Part of keeping an attractive property involves addressing issues that can compromise not only the appearance of a home, but even its integrity. People who live in regions with high humidity may find their homes are vulnerable to exterior mildew growth. Mildew is a kind of mold. Molds include all species of microscopic fungi that grow in the form of hyphae, which are multicellular filaments, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Mold thrives on any organic matter and surfaces with moisture management problems. Mildew, in particular, lives on shower walls, windowsills and other places where moisture levels are high. Mildew also can grow on home siding as well as fences and other exterior structures. While typically gray or white, mildew can be various colors. Experts recommend various cleansers to help combat the issue of mildew on a home. One of the first products that homeowners tend to reach for is sodium hypochlorite, which is a standard bleach used in laundry and pool sanitation. While sodium hypochlorite seems to make mildew vanish, those at This Old House say that chlorine evaporates too quickly to get to mildew’s roots on porous surfaces, such as wood or vinyl siding. Bleach also can stain clothing and damage foliage around the house. Hydrogen peroxide, or oxygen bleach, is less volatile, will not affect foliage

and can clean mildew, algae and dirt on and below the surface. Trisodium phosphate is another effective cleanser. Commonly known as TSP, it often succeeds where other solutions fail in regard to stubborn stains and mildew. TSP also works well on various exterior surfaces. TSP needs to be used with extreme caution. When using TSP, wear long sleeves, gloves, goggles, and a respiratory mask, says Today’s Homeowner. The product also requires adequate ventilation. There also are some environmental concerns, as TSP can damage foliage. In addition, if the product ends up in lakes and streams, it can trigger an overgrowth of algae that results in the depletion of oxygen levels in the water. Eco-conscious homeowners may want to try oxy cleansers before TSP. Mildew shies away from bright sunlight, so it tends to grow on the north side of homes. Removing trees or other foliage that can further block sunlight to areas of the house can help eradicate mildew growth and stop it before it starts. Another tactic is to clean out gutters regularly and thoroughly to reduce moisture and to prevent decomposing debris from running over the edge of the gutters. This runoff can drip down the home’s siding and spread the mildew to other areas. Mildew can be problematic any time of year. Clean up mildew when the weather cools down to spruce up the look of a home.

Improvement How home design trends are evolving for social distancing by Dan Kittredge COVID-19 has brought changes to everything, and home design is no exception. Experts are expecting to see lasting impacts on everything from the materials we use to the rooms we prioritize. Bob Gauthier of Yard Service Landscape Experts, whose business serves customers in Warwick, Cranston, Coventry and other communities, said many homeowners are seeing their properties in a new way during the pandemic. “With people being at home because of COVID … A lot of people are taking a look at their properties and seeing they want to do some improvements,” he said. For many clients, Gauthier said, that means adding functional or aesthetic features such as walkways or shrubs. For others who have found themselves “busier than ever” during the pandemic, he said, that means seeking the services of a professional to assist with tasks they might otherwise have undertaken themselves. Business remains “very steady,” Gauthier said: “It’s a tick up, it’s definitely not a tick down.” In particular, landscaping – the focus of his company – remains heavily in demand. Gauthier said many homeowners are seeking to add new features to their outdoor spaces, such as patios, fire pits or waterfalls. “They’re dedicated to their property,” he said. Gauthier, a native Rhode Islander who was born and raised in Warwick, employs about 17 people through Yard Service Landscape Experts. He has been doing landscaping work since he was 10 years old. The company can be reached at yardserviceexperts.com or by calling (401) 828-1202. Check out these and other noteworthy home design trends: Houses over apartments: Many people who live in condos or apartments do so to be closer to the action – work, entertainment and shops – and never planned on spending much time at home. But the pandemic has changed that, and more people are going to want a home that offers plenty of room and outdoor space in case they need to self-isolate again. Self-sufficiency: A hard lesson we’ve

learned is that things and services we thought we could count on aren’t necessarily a sure thing, so items that increase self-reliance will become very popular. Expect to see more homes with sources of energy like solar panels, sources of heat like fireplaces and stoves, and even urban and indoor gardens that allow you to grow your own produce. Outdoor living: Between playgrounds closing and parks becoming overcrowded, many of us are turning to our balconies, patios and backyards for fresh air and nature. This means we’re going to be investing more in our outdoor spaces, with functional kitchens, soothing water features, cozy firepits, and high-quality outdoor furniture to create a much-needed escape. Healthier spaces: Thanks to spending more time indoors and reprioritizing our health, we’ll turn to design to help ensure our homes are safe and healthy for our families. We’ll see a rise in products like water filtration systems as well as materials that improve indoor air quality. For new homes and additions, alternatives to wood-framing like insulated concrete forms from Nudura, which offer improved ventilation for healthier indoor air quality and an environment that’s less susceptible to mold, will be key. Home office space: Business experts are suggesting many companies will see that working from home is not only possible but offers tangible benefits, like saving money on office space rent. With working from home on the rise, creating a home office space that inspires productivity will be a major project many of us tackle. Luxury home office furniture that feels chic and blends into your décor as well as ergonomic chairs and desks will see a major boost. Custom and quality: With the hit to the economy, people are going to be buying less, but what they do buy will be better quality, while at the same time making an effort to support American businesses. When it comes to design, trends will shift to locally made furniture, custom-built homes and pieces and materials that stand the test of time. Find more information at nudura.com.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Although practical situations continue to dominate this week, there’s time for the Lamb to indulge in the fun things in life — like maybe taking a special someone out for a great evening. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This week favors relationships. Take time to renew old ones, and make time to go where new friends can be found. On a more practical note, expect news about a business deal. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should be seeing some progress on that new workplace situation. Meanwhile, family matters might demand more attention, and you’ll want to set aside time to deal with them. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A relationship suddenly might present some challenges you never expected. After talking things out, you might want to consider taking some time to assess what you’ve learned. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A disappointing response to a request might dampen the Lion’s spirits. But you might want to ask the reasons behind it. What you learn can be of great importance in a future undertaking. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A once-volatile situation should be settled by now, giving you a chance to refocus on a project you’ve been planning for. Look for an interested party to rally to your support.

CHURCH OF THE ANNUNCIATION HOLLYWOOD — Movie theaters are trying to figure out the best way to reopen. Will people still be afraid to go to a theater without knowing if the ventilation will filter out COVID-19? One way, of course, is drive-in movie theaters. However, it appears that moviemakers and studios think the way to get people back into theaters is with superhero films. Ben Affleck played Batman in “Batman v Superman (2016), in an unbilled appearance in “Suicide Squad (2016) and in “Justice League (2017). Between 2014 and 2015, he was set to direct, co-write and star in “The Batman, but he decided to bow out of the project. This year the reason came to light when Affleck admitted to having a drinking problem. “The Batman moved on without him, and Batman is now being played by Robert Pattinson. Filming began in January 2020, and they shot one quarter of the film before shooting was suspended March 25 due to COVID-19. Shooting recommenced this month. But Affleck isn’t done playing Batman; he’s before the cameras in the new “Flash film being directed by Matt Reeves. Michael Keaton, Batman in Tim Burton’s 1980 and 1992 films, also has been cast in the new “Flash flick. “The Flash is Ezra Miller, the 27-year-old co-star of “Perks of a Wallflower (2012), “Trainwreck (2015), the two “Fantastic Beasts films (2016, 2018) and “Justice League (2017). *** The sequel of “Suicide Squad (which grossed almost $1 billion), will have Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman and Jai Courtney returning, as well as new additions Idris Elba (originally cast to replace Will Smith as Dead Shot, but now in a new character instead), Alice Braga, Nathan Fillion, Pete Davidson, John Cena and former “Doctor Who Peter Capaldi. Another sequel coming is “Shazam!

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A business matter that unexpectedly turns into a personal situation could create complications. Best to resolve the matter now before too much harm can be done. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Emotions can run high when they involve personal matters that no one really wants to talk about. But this could be a good time to create the means to a workable outcome. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A positive response to a workplace request could lead the way to other long-sought changes. Congratulations. A personal situation also takes a welcome turn. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Patience pays off, as that once-overwhelming work situation continues to become easier to handle on a one-by-one basis. Look for positive news from a colleague. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It might be a good idea to take more time to reassess your next move in working out a complex situation. You could benefit from a new perspective on the matter. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might want to consider making time to discuss a change of plans with everyone concerned. Be prepared to explain your actions. Also be prepared to listen to alternatives. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a strong sense of what is right, and you try to work from that foundation. Friends see you as reliable.
