% 2.00 APY*
JOURNE REWARDS CHECKING 1. Just make 12 debit purchases a month 2. One direct deposit or auto payment per month 3. Sign up for e-statements
How do we do it? Well, it’s the kind of thing you can do when your customers are your owners. Visit us online or call 401-233-4700
*APY is annual percentage yield and is accurate as of 07/16/2020. Must maintain a minimum daily balance of $10.00 in your account to obtain the disclosed APY. Meet 3 Journe reward rate criteria: 1) 12 Debit Card Purchases must post and settle each qualification cycle 2) Have 1 Direct Deposit or Automatic Payment post and settle per qualification cycle 3) Access Online Banking and Enroll to Receive Electronic Statements. ATM-processed transactions do not count towards qualifying debit card transactions. Balances between $10-$20,000 receive APY of 2.00% if each cycle the minimum criteria is met. Tier examples - Tier 1 - balances between $10-$20,000 receive APY of 2.00%; and Tier 2 - balances over $20,000 earn .345% interest rate on portion of balance over $20,000, resulting in 0.68% -2.00% APY depending on the balance. See an MSR for details on blended rates above $20,000. Rate is subject to change at any time after account opening. If you do not meet the criteria per qualification cycle, your account will still function as a Journe checking account earning an APY of .05%; however, it will not receive ATM fee refunds for that time period. Fees may reduce earnings. ATM fee refunds up to $25 per qualification cycle. New checking account relationships only. Federally insured by NCUA.
By Lucie Winborne • It’s illegal to kill Bigfoot in British Columbia. That is, if you ever actually run across him. • In March 2019, the Roosevelt Hotel in New Orleans celebrated its 125th anniversary by offering a free seven-night stay in the presidential suite, along with complimentary private dinners and spa treatments worth $15,000. But this wasn’t your everyday giveaway — the prize was only available to the person who returned the “most outrageous” item ever stolen from the hotel! • The earliest toothpaste was made in ancient Egypt from crushed pepper, rock salt and dried flowers. No, it wasn’t particularly effective. • Speaking of toothpaste, that blob on your toothbrush is called a nurdle. • Enjoy the smell of fresh-cut grass after mowing your lawn? Researchers have determined the scent is a chemical compound given off by plants in distress. They emit a similar odor when attacked by caterpillars or other predatory insects. • Grooves in the road on Route 66 play “America the Beautiful.” • In 1979, Elvita Adams, jobless and facing eviction, attempted suicide by jumping off the 86th floor of the Empire State Building but survived with just a fractured pelvis when she was blown back to the 85th floor by a strong gust of wind. • When the first Spanish explorers arrived at the Yucatan peninsula, they naturally asked what the area was called. The response, “Yucatan,” was a Yucatec Maya word meaning “I don’t understand what you’re saying.” • Chimpanzees can identify each other from pictures of their butts. • The average male becomes bored with a shopping trip in about 26 minutes. His female companion typically lasts two hours. • Almost 163,000 pints of Guinness beer are wasted in facial hair each year. *** Thought for the Day: “The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.” — Dolly Parton © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

Steps to achieve a better worklife balance
Many people face the challenge of balancing work and family. Workloads may be hefty on both fronts, and the pursuit of a healthy balance between home and career may seem like an unattainable goal. Stress can build from feelings of being pulled in too many directions. According to Mental Health America, stress can compromise a person’s ability to concentrate, lead to feelings of irritability or depression, negatively affect personal relationships, and weaken immune systems, increasing a person’s susceptibility to a variety of ailments. Research even indicates chronic stress may double a person’s risk of having a heart attack. The desire to have a fulfilling career and a full life at home is a goal shared by millions of people across the globe. But it’s important that one’s pursuit of such goals not come at the expense of personal health. Living a fulfilling life often involves finding the right work-life balance, and the following tips can help make that possible. • Establish your priorities. Make a list of the things that are most important to you. Having this list put on paper can make goals more attainable. Think about the main things you want to focus on in life and go from there. • Learn to manage your time. One of the keys to creating a work-life balance is to hone your time management skills. Effective time management can help you fit more in without feeling rushed or anxious. Start by determining just how much time you need to perform certain tasks. Then divide up the day accordingly. You may find that by waking up an hour earlier each day, you achieve a lot more without affecting your well-being. Quiet time at home in the morning can be a prime time to fit in a workout or catch up on paperwork. • Don’t procrastinate. Stick to your schedule so you don’t feel stressed and as if you are constantly rushing around. Complete one item before you move on to the next. • Communicate effectively with your bosses. Be honest with your bosses or colleagues if you feel like work is negatively impacting your home life. Supervisors may be flexible and receptive to feedback if it

When is the “Dune” trailer going to be released? Timothee Chalamet said it would be before September. — J.K. Hopefully, by the time you read this, a trailer (otherwise known as a movie preview) will be available online. Timothee Chalamet, who stars in the remake of “Dune,” said on social media that we could expect a trailer before September. “Dune” is a classic science-fiction novel set on a desert planet that was first turned into a movie back in 1984 by director David Lynch and starred Kyle MacLachlan, pre-”Twin Peaks” fame, and Virginia Madsen. It was not well-received, but with the resurgence in popularity of the sci-fi genre, it’s not surprising that someone out there would remake it. That someone is director Denis Villeneuve, who was also behind the remake of the classic “Blade Runner” titled “Blade Runner 2049.” The new “Dune” has star power going for it with the Oscar-nominated Chalamet (“Call Me by Your Name”) and Jason Momoa (“Aquaman”). With the dearth of new movies in theaters because of the pandemic, when it does hit cinemas, it’s bound to be a smashing success. In the meantime, enjoy the trailer. You can stay up-to-date on all things “Dune” through its official website, www.warnerbros.com/movies/dune. *** How are the “Married at First Sight” and “Teen Mom OG” reality-show stars being paid? My friends and I love these shows. Is the marriage and honeymoon paid for? — M.D. It depends on whom you ask. Chris Coelen, executive producer of Lifetime network’s “Married at First Sight,” told “The Wrap” that the couples are paid “almost nothing.” He said this is to ensure that the participants have pure intentions in their search for love and not just greed. According to “In Touch Weekly,” though, an anonymous production assistant stated that what Coelen deems a low wage is actually $1,500 per episode. Since the show’s inception in 2014, the percentage of couples who have stayed together has dipped to as low as 20%.

means keeping good employees happy and productive. Bosses may allow you to work from home or be willing to arrange a flex schedule. • Unplug at home. When spending time at home with your loved ones, disconnect from your devices, especially those that connect you to work. Making yourself too available for work can be a detriment to your health and family. • Divide your responsibilities. Allow family members to tackle some chores or other household duties so it will free up more time to spend together. • Schedule a mental break each day. Give yourself time to perform one activity per day that you really enjoy. This will help you recharge and manage stress even further. Activities may include sports, hobbies or exercise. Finding the right balance between work and family requires some maneuvering and practice, but it can be achieved with planning, organization and communication.

Timothee Chalamet
As for MTV’s “Teen Mom OG,” it’s a spinoff of its first teen pregnancy show “16 and Pregnant,” which debuted in 2009. These women have a large following and reportedly get paid anywhere from $25,000 per episode to $500,000 per season. I would imagine that the stars of both reality shows make extra money through their social-media accounts, like Instagram, if they advertise products. There are a lot of perks to being a reality show star! *** Will the new “Penny Dreadful” series that takes place in the 1930s be back for another season soon, or at least in 2021? I liked it even more than the original show. — S.F. Unfortunately, “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,” starring Natalie Dormer and Nathan Lane, has been canceled by Showtime after just one season. Despite earning good reviews, the numbers must not have been up to the cable channel’s expectations, and so the show ended for good on June 28. How to transform a fixer-upper The real estate market will always have its ups and downs, but real estate is an oft-profitable investment. Real estate investors do their investing for various reasons. Some see a house as a place to hang their hats for years and years, while others look at properties as nothing more than investments. Buying a home with the intent to fix it up and resell it is called a “fix and flip.” In such situations, investors buy homes at below-market prices before refurbishing the homes with the goal of recouping their initial investment and then some when the homes are ultimately put back on the market. Flipping has become popular for both expert remodelers and novice investors. RealtyTrac®, the nation’s leading source for comprehensive housing data, noted in its “Year-End and Q4 2015 U.S. Home Flipping” report that 5.5 percent of all single family home and condo sales during the year were flipped properties. This marked an increase from the same time the previous year. Investing in a fixer-upper requires a leap of faith and a vision of what the home can look like in the future. Turning a real estate lemon into lemonade requires certain skills and a good measure of patience. The following are some guidelines to get anyone started. • Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Make an honest assessment of your abilities and which renovations, if any, you can handle. If you are unskilled or inexperienced working with your hands, then it can be easy for an investment property to quickly become a money pit. Before purchasing a property, hire a trained home inspector to tour the home with you and point out all of the areas that will need renovation. With this list, begin getting estimates on how much money the work will entail. Determine if this fits with your budget or not. You do not want to invest so much that it exceeds what you could feasibly recoup when it comes time to sell. • Overlook cosmetic things when visiting properties. Cosmetic issues include all of the easily replaceable items in a home, such as carpeting, appliances, interior paint colors and cabinetry. Focus on the bones of the house — the architectural integrity and those little touches that you envision having a “wow” factor. • Seek the help of experts. Some flippers think they’ll save the most money by doing all of the work themselves. This isn’t always the case. Professional architects, designers and contractors may help you save money. Contractors have an intimate knowledge of where to buy materials and may be able to negotiate prices based on wholesale or trade costs. In addition, experts can help you avoid common pitfalls because they’ve already done this type of work time and again. It’s smart to rely on expert advice, even if it means investing a little bit more. • Save money by doing some work yourself. While the pros may tackle the more complex parts of a given project, such as rewiring electricity or changing the footprint of a home, you can still be in-
volved. Ask to participate in demolition, such as taking down walls or removing old materials from the home. Such participation may be fun, and it can save you substantial amounts of money on labor. • Recognize that not everything must be completely redone. Realize that, in some instances, a coat of paint and some new accents may be all you need to transform a space. For example, if kitchen cabinets are in good condition, see if they can be refaced or painted instead of replaced entirely. Install new door pulls/handles to add visual interest. Look for some readymade items, such as bookshelves, instead of installing custom carpentry. • Think about what the buyer wants and not what you want. Renovate with an eye toward prospective buyers’ needs. Keep things neutral and accommodating. Research the latest trends to understand what buyers might be seeking in a home. You want potential buyers to envision themselves moving right in. Renovating a fixer-upper takes time, but it can be a worthwhile project, and one that can help anyone turn a profit in a booming real estate market.

The importance of free play
The National Education Association notes that recess and free play are critical to the development of students in grades pre-K through eighth grade. According to the NEA, recess and free play during the school day encourages interpersonal interactions and problem-solving skills, and such opportunities also can prove beneficial for older students. Despite these benefits, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that 40 percent of schools have reduced or eliminated recess over the last 20 years in an attempt to increase instructional time for students. While that may be understandable, it ignores the many benefits of recess and free play, which the American Academy of Pediatrics says are crucial to students’ mental, emotional, physical, and social development. In addition, the AAP notes that research has shown a connection between recess/free play and improved performance in the classroom. This is true even for older students, including high schoolers. Regular breaks from the rigors of the classroom provide adolescent students with opportunities to mentally decompress, potentially improving their focus when classroom sessions resume. Such benefits highlight the important role of free play in the development of students, including older students whose school schedules may no longer include time for free play or recess.

Welcoming all our long time customers and new ones as well! We hope to see you soon! by Jennifer Coates
When Carissa Campanini and Rosie Moreau met five years ago, it was as if they had known each other all their lives. They soon became the closest of friends, often completing each other’s sentences and always supporting each other’s life goals. Rosie describes Carissa as warm, welcoming and “everyone’s best friend!” Carissa describes Rosie as driven, hard-working, kind-hearted, and generous. Not only did Rosie and Carissa become fast friends, but they quickly discovered that they shared a lifelong passion for styling and cutting hair, so when a recent opportunity arose that allowed them to advance their careers, they took a “leap of faith” and ventured from a former salon to a new one, together. It is easy to see what “lights a fire” under these two stylist’s feet ~ it is working with people and making them look and feel their very best. Both Rosie and Carissa look back over the course of their lives and see how this love of hair styling and beauty began when they were still young girls. Both Rosie and Carissa had family members who worked in the industry and share how they would do anything just to be around those relatives, whether it was sweeping up hair in one salon, playing with the manikins or just hanging around and watching the whole process unfold. Carissa describes creating beautiful hair designs on her Barbie dolls ~ clearly she knew from the start what her future career would look like! Rosie and Carissa are now both experienced and talented hair stylists: Rosie has been in the business for eight years, and Carissa, for ten. They BRILLIANT

are current, on-trend, creative and adventurous but also classic in their styles and techniques. They are professionally trained, though both would say much of what they do is instinctual. Both have different strengths – Rosie is best at highlighting and “blonding”; she likes “up-do’s” and “blowouts,” especially if it means a special occasion is being planned for! Carissa has honed her skills as a colorist, mastering the increasing popular world of “fantasy colors.” Both love to cut, color, style, wax, deep condition hair, and follow all the latest trends. Rosie and Carissa can now be found at Krystal Rose Salon on Sandy Bottom Road in Coventry. The salon is tucked into the far corner of Century Plaza

Congested roadways and hectic schedules can anger drivers in a hurry to get from point A to point B. While it’s easy to grow frustrated on the road, the growing number of incidents of road rage and driver aggression is a significant concern that should make drivers think twice before venting their frustrations when behind the wheel. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the number of fatal accidents involving enraged drivers has increased tenfold since 2004. Between 2010 and 2013, the percentage of drivers in the Washington, D.C. who said they often felt “uncontrollable anger toward another driver on the road doubled, from 6 percent to 12 percent. Aggression on the part of drivers is routinely cited as a major contributor to many fatal crashes and other accidents. According to the American Psychological Association, some people may be predisposed to road rage. Risk-takers, individuals who tend to anger more easily and people who identify as being generally aggressive or take-charge types may have a higher propensity to get angry behind the wheel. The term “road rage was coined by a local Los Angeles, Calif., news station after shootings occurred on several freeways in that city. NHTSA defines road rage as a driver “committing moving traffic offenses so as to endanger other persons or property; an assault with a motor vehicle or other dangerous weapon by the operator or passenger of one motor vehicle on the operator or passengers of another motor vehicle. Road rage and aggressive driving are similar, but in the eyes of the law, road rage may result in a criminal charge while aggression may lead to a traffic citation. While few drivers can say they have never become heated while driving, routine rage or aggressiveness is a cause for concern. The following are some ways

drivers can tame their aggressive driving. • Allow for ample time to get to your destination. Feeling rushed on the way to an appointment or event may encourage risky road behavior or make you more likely to quickly lose your patience with fellow motorists. Allow for plenty of time to get where you need to go and you may feel calmer and more in control should traffic spring up. Even calling a party at your destination and explaining the traffic situation can alleviate tension. • Share your commute. Commuters are more likely to experience road rage than non-commuters, simply because they tend to be on the roads each day in the heart of busy traffic. Carpool with another person to break up the driving responsibilities. Sitting in the passenger seat a few times per week may help keep your aggression levels in check. • Think before reacting. It’s tempting to yell or signal to a driver that you are angered by his or her reckless driving. But take a few deep breaths before reacting, and you may feel more relaxed and more willing to let things go. • Practice safe driving habits. Set an example on the roadways by following the speed limit, driving courteously and yielding to drivers when necessary. It’s better to drive defensively at all times than risk getting into an accident by driving aggressively. Aggressive driving has the potential to be dangerous. Curbing driver anger is one of the keys to keeping the roadways safe.

A fireplace is a cozy and warm spot around which a family can gather. The home and real estate resource HomeGuides.com indicates that 60 percent of new homes have a fireplace, which is up from 36 percent in the 1970s. Naturally, fueling a fireplace for the season may require homeowners with wood-burning units to keep an ample supply of wood at the ready. How that wood is stored is important, as properly stored firewood can prevent waste and other issues around the house. Wood that is freshly cut has a water content of 60 percent or more. Yet, for best burning ability, wood should be near 20 percent in water content. Green wood is hard to ignite and will not burn nearly as well or efficiently as seasoned wood. Another concern associated with green wood is that it can contribute more to creosote accumulation in the flue of a fireplace. Creosote is a combustible material that may lead to fires if left unchecked. According to BioAdvanced®, a science-based lawn, garden and home improvement innovator, seasoning wood typically takes six months to a year. Homeowners may opt to purchase seasoned wood that already has sat and dried. Homeowners who have an abundance of firewood have to store it somewhere. Log Splitters Direct suggests choosing a dry, breezy area of the property that is about 20 feet from the nearest door to the house. This helps avoid hitchhiker pests from coming inside with the wood, such as termites, ants, spiders, and mice. Do not stack the wood flush against
a structure. It should be at least a few inches away to allow airflow behind the stack. Stick to organized rows of wood no more than four feet high. Log racks and pallets and posts will keep the wood up and off of the ground where moisture and rotting can develop. Placing the logs in an unorganized pile will impede air flow and cause the wood to rot rather than continue to dry and season even more. Homeowners also should use a cover to protect seasoned firewood from the elements. Position a tarp or plastic sheeting so it blankets the top of the stack and extends a few inches down the sides. Keep the sides mostly exposed to air. Others prefer to stack it in a barn or shed or under an overhang. Green wood is less expensive than seasoned wood. Those who prefer this method should do so in the early spring and let it season over the next several months. Bankrate says that the cost of a cord of wood varies across the country, but in general one can expect to pay between $120 and $180 for a cord of hardwood that is split and seasoned. This price may be higher in mid-winter when demand increases.

Basements may not be go-to hangouts during spring, summer and fall, when many homeowners spend more time on their patios and decks enjoying the great outdoors. But as winter approaches and the great outdoors becomes less welcoming, basements once again become popular places to relax and spend time with loved ones. That’s why fall is such an ideal time to address mold issues in a basement. According to WebMD, exposure to mold can irritate a person’s eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. That’s true whether a person is allergic to mold or not. Even people who are merely sensitive to mold can experience sneezing and runny nose, and some may even develop red eyes and skin rash if exposed to mold. Reactions are much more severe for people with mold aller-
gies, who may experience shortness of breath or suffer from asthma attacks if exposed to mold. Molds require moisture to grow, and basements may provide ideal growing conditions for mold. Mold spores cannot grow without moisture, so dehumidifiers can help homeowners effectively reduce the risk of mold growth in their basements. WebMD advises homeowners keep indoor humidity levels, which can be measured with an inexpensive instrument known as a hygrometer, below 60 percent. In lieu of wall-to-wall carpeting in basements, install concrete floors and area rugs to make mold growth less likely. Basement floors also should be routinely inspected for leaks, as leaks can promote mold growth. Address leaks promptly if any are found.

Pallet projects can be a handy hobby In recent years, the trend of upcycling, or transforming unneeded or unwanted materials into new items or products, has become more popular. Unlike recycling, which is taking consumer materials like plastic, paper, metal, and glass and breaking them down so base materials can be remade into new, lower-quality consumer products, upcycling produces items of a higher quality than the original materials. Wood pallet projects are an excellent example of upcycling. Such projects involve taking wood pallets, which tend to be used to stack, move and store stock, and turning them into amazing wood products. Often free for the taking, pallet wood has become a popular building material for do-it-yourselfers. This rustic wood already has an aged look and decorative appeal. Pallets are often made from leftover wood, and using them anew is an eco-friendly endeavor that can add flair to any project. The following are just a handful of pallet project ideas. • Christmas trees: Start thinking ahead to the holiday season. Cut pallet planks into sizes that incrementally get larger and attach to form a triangular Christmas tree shape. Decorate with paint or other accents, and don’t forget to place a star on top. • Pallet planter: Make a planter box as big or as small as you like to grow flowers, vegetables or herbs. A narrow planter also can be hung on a wall to add flair to spaces indoors or outside. • Swing chair: A pallet, a supportive back and some cushions can be used to make a swing that is fastened to the ceiling of a porch or even a tree. • Wine rack: Turn pallet wood into a wine rack that also has a space to store wine
glasses below it. • Outdoor table: Top a disused table with pallet boards nailed or screwed to the top. Stain or clear coat them, and the result is a brand new table for gardening use or outdoor entertaining. • Platform bed: Pallets can be sanded, painted and placed to form the base of a platform bed. Utilize more pallets to serve as a headboard attached to the wall or bed frame. • Bench: Make a pallet bench that can be crafted child- or adult-sized. Use it inside the house or outdoors on a patio. • Garbage container: Instead of generic plastic garbage pails, make a pallet kitchen garbage container that has rustic appeal. • Backsplash: Give a kitchen some rustic appeal with a pallet backsplash. Cut boards into desired lengths and stagger on the wall. Leave the wood raw or seal it for protection against moisture. Pallet wood can be transformed into many different projects, helping do-it-yourselfers stay busy at minimal cost. Go online to search for plans for building an array of pallet projects.

Protect your home (and more) from winter’s freeze Freezing temperatures may be good for ice skating or building snowmen, but sub-freezing temperatures can be dangerous for the average person and his or her home. Cold weather often leaves people scurrying to do whatever is necessary to safeguard themselves from the big chill. But it’s important homeowners also protect their homes in cold weather. Plumbing Plumbing and pipes may be vulnerable to cold weather. Frozen pipes may burst and cause substantial damage to a home, potentially causing flooding and structural damage. Homeowners should disconnect and drain garden hoses before winter arrives. Water to outdoor hose bibs should be turned off, though the valves on these outdoor faucets should be left open to drain. Also, outdoor faucets can be covered with insulating foam covers. The Red Cross says pipes that freeze most frequently include pipes in unheated areas, such as basements, attics, garages, and crawl spaces. Close vents to the outside in areas like attics and basements to limit the amount of cold air that gets indoors. Think about insulating unheated areas, as well as using pipe sleeves, heat tape or wraps on exposed pipes. By opening kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors, homeowners can allow warm air from a home to reach pipes under the sink. During extreme freezes, keep cold water dripping from a sink to prevent pipes from freezing. Service HVAC systems It’s important to ensure that heating systems are working properly prior to the cold-weather season. It may only take hours for the interior of a home to reach

Have fuel ready Homeowners who heat their homes with oil, wood or coal should make sure they have plenty of fuel on hand in advance of winter. Shortages can occur, and it may take some time for new fuel to arrive in the midst of a cold snap. As a precaution, homeowners can rely on portable space heaters to fill in the heating gaps during freezing temperatures. Exercise extreme caution with these devices, turning them off when leaving the room and remembering to avoid overloading outlets. Protect outside Drain birdbaths, clean out downspouts and remove water from other items where water can freeze and cause damage. Inspect roofing prior to the snowy season, but stay off roofs during freezing weather. Remove snow shovels and other winter gear from storage and make sure the items are easily accessible during snowstorms. Winter’s bite can be severe. Homeowners can protect themselves and their properties when the freeze sets in.

What do these Beatles songs have in common: “Love Me Do,” “Please Please Me” and “From Me to You”? 4. Which ‘50s group covered and released “If I Didn’t Care”? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: “And so we’re running just as fast as we can, Holding on to one another’s hand, Trying to get away into the night.” Answers 1. “Le Freak,” in 1978. Guitarist Nile Rodgers had been invited to the club by Grace Jones. The doorman refused to let him in, hence the song, except in the original version the word wasn’t “freak.” 2. Neil Diamond, in 1971. The African word has multiple meanings, such as “hello” and “peace be with you.” 3. They all feature John Lennon playing the harmonica. 4. The Platters. The song was written in 1939 and originally released by the Ink Spots that year. 5. “I Think We’re Alone Now,” by Tommy James and the Shondells, in 1967. It’s also a good idea to try out the peppers you plan to use in your salsa by trying half of a hot pepper first, stirring the salsa, letting it sit for a few minutes and tasting for heat. See if the temperature is what you expect and what you prefer. It’s easier to adjust the mix of peppers in the salsa to gradually make it a little hotter by adding more peppers than it is to deal with an excessively hot and spicy salsa after it’s prepared. If someone finds your salsa a bit too hot for their tastes, you might try serving it with some sour cream or salty chips to help calm that spicy flavor.
cherry tomatoes, cut into quarters 1 cup diced red onion 1–2 fresh jalapenos, stemmed and minced 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1 tablespoon honey 1½ teaspoons chili powder 1 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup finely chopped cilantro 1. In a large bowl, combine the mango, peaches, tomatoes, onion, jalapenos, lime juice, honey, chili powder and salt. Stir well to combine. 2. Cover and refrigerate for up to 1 hour, to blend the flavors. Just before serving, stir in the cilantro and adjust the seasoning. Serve with baked tortilla or pita chips. Makes about 2 cups.

Summer Salsa

178 WEAVER HILL ROAD, West Greenwich: September 12 & 13, 9AM-3PM.
When tomatoes and peppers are ripe and plentiful, folks will wonder what to do with all that produce. Salsa is one good option. How hot the salsa is depends on the kind of peppers that are used. Peppers are rated according to their hotness on a scale called the Scoville Organoleptic Test. Milder peppers tend to be larger (4-10 inches) and are “yellow-turning-red. Examples of milder peppers include bell peppers and sweet banana peppers, which rate at 0 Scoville Units, and so are very mild. More in the mid-range would be jalapeno peppers, which are rated at 5,000 Scoville Units and are tapered green or red chilies. The hottest variety is habanero, with a rating of 300,000 Scoville Units. The habanero resembles an orange lantern. Typically, the hotter peppers are smaller varieties (1-3 inches at maturity) and are colored “green-turning-red. When working with hot peppers, be sure to wear gloves to prevent burns. Just cutting a habanero open, for example, can make a person’s eyes water! Adjust the spiciness of the salsa by selecting the type of pepper added to the mix. For a very mild salsa, use milder peppers. For a very hot salsa, use a greater proportion of hotter peppers to milder ones. Regardless of the product’s spiciness, don’t just add more peppers to make it hotter. The total amount of peppers should be the amount recommended in the recipe. The proportions are calculated out so that the recipe will be safely preserved.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Cupid is strong in the Aries aspect this week, with the cherub opening romantic possibilities for single Lambs, and strengthening ties ‘twixt loving pairs already in a caring relationship. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your dramatic flair might make things more interesting as you recount an event to your colleagues. But be careful not to exaggerate reality to the point that facts and fancy combine to form fiction. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You love to talk, and this week you should get lots of chances to share your thoughts with people who will not only pay attention to what you have to say, but will want to hear more. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The pattern of recent changes could begin to shift from mostly workplace-related events to more personal matters. Continue to keep an open mind as you prepare to deal with them. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Reward yourself for what’s sure to be a dynamic week with a getaway to someplace wonderful, hopefully with a wonderful someone. You’ll return refreshed and ready for what’s ahead. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might want to suggest resolving an old disagreement before it can affect a matter expected to come up for discussion. It’s always best to start with a clean slate.
LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) The week favors combining dollops of creativity and practicality to work out both professional and personal problems. A longtime friend could have something of note to suggest. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Some surprising facts could come to light if you decide to probe deeper into an “opportunity than you might usually do. What you’ll learn could determine what you’ll earn. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Someone close to you might seek your counsel. Hear him/ her out, but hold the line at giving actual advice until you get credible answers to all your questions. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) What seems to be an overwhelming workplace project can be dealt with quite well if you handle one category at a time. Things will soon begin to fall into place. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A personal matter might need more of your time than you had expected. Try to prioritize between your many outside commitments and your domestic responsibilities. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A developing situation still needs more time to grow, and more time to study before you can plunge in and make some attention-getting waves. Patience is best for wise Pisceans. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for organization that would make you a fine archivist. (Are you listening out there, Library of Congress?)
