Turkey Bowl 2011 ON THE RUN Winning in football is never easy, especially this time of year when the temperature drops and the ground begins to freeze. But if there’s one thing that separates the great teams from the good ones, it’s the ability to run the ball consistently under any circumstances. This Turkey Bowl section focuses on that facet of the game, running the ball, the single biggest key to success for every team in Warwick and Cranston. Whether it’s a playmaking running back, a confusing scheme or a strong offensive line that helps to keep the chains moving, Thanksgiving football wouldn’t be the same without running, running and more running, and these teams know how to do just that. Inside you’ll find breakdowns of the most important piece of your team’s ground game, as well as other team information and previews of the big Turkey Day match-ups. So enjoy the section, head out to the games and have fun watching your team run wild. Good luck to all six teams, and Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. - William Geoghegan and Kevin Pomeroy

KEY TO THE RUSH: WARWICK VETS

Boyajian shines as Vets’ big-play threat Until he was 11, T.J. Boyajian spent his fall seasons playing soccer. But when he saw some of his friends playing football with Warwick PAL, he thought he might want to join them. His parents gave him the green light, he signed up, and his teams started giving him the ball. They haven't stopped. Boyajian, now a junior at Vets, has become the Hurricanes' top offensive weapon. He's pretty happy - and so is Vets - that he traded in his soccer uniform for shoulder pads. "My brothers played flag football and I was watching some of the guys on this team when they were in PAL," Boyajian said. "I said I wanted to try it out and my parents let me play. I've loved it ever since. Much better than soccer." Vets coaches saw Boyajian's football potential immediately. His freshman year, he even got a chance to play in the Thanksgiving game. As a sophomore last year, he flashed bigplay ability, and this year, that ability has grown. The 'Canes have had their struggles, but when things have gone right, Boyajian has usually had a big hand in it. He's a threat to break a big run at any time, and that's a threat Vets hasn't had in several years. "His work ethic is really second to none, and he's humble about it," said assistant coach Brian Nappa. "He knows he's a bigplay threat and he knows he has a lot of abil-

ity, but he works hard getting other players on the team to work hard along with him. I think his leadership ability and the intangibles he has are what make him a big play guy." Those qualities also make Boyajian a team player. He gives the offensive line all the credit for his success. "When the line blocks, they're tremendous," Boyajian said. "I just hit the hole and I go. I just go as the line goes. When they're having a bad game, I'm having a bad game." The bad has still out-weighed the good for Vets this season, but the team did get a win against Coventry and the players are still believing. Boyajian helps lead the charge. "We've progressed tremendously since the last two years," he said. "We went from not being a team at all - just a bunch of individuals - to being a team. Our record might not be the greatest, but we've come so much further. It's just going to go right into next year. We're going to get the program back rolling." And Boyajian will keep running. He's hoping to lead Vets to something big on Thanksgiving. "If we play the game I know we can, we're going to surprise a lot of people," he said. "I believe we're a lot better than our record shows. If we can win in the trenches, we're going to be right there." -William Geoghegan

KEY TO THE RUSH: PILGRIM

Leddys continue Pats’ unique tradition When Tom O'Connor took over as Pilgrim head coach last season, he found himself without a big player to carry the load from the backfield. So he made one. O'Connor moved former lineman Jon Stevens to the fullback spot, and the results spoke for themselves. Stevens became the Pats’ leading rusher and culminated his senior season with a huge 172-yard performance in Pilgrim's 20-13

win over Vets on Thanksgiving. "Stevens is a freak of nature," O'Connor said. "He's athletic. He can do anything. With Stevens lost to graduation, though, O'Connor had the same dilemma heading into this year. He knew where to turn. O'Connor moved former offensive linemen Andrew and Alex Leddy into the fullback spot, and it's again been a

ALEX LEDDY

success. While neither Leddy has been a tremendous big play threat, they have both fit perfectly into O'Connor's grindit-out style. "Ball control," O'Connor said. "Keep the other offense off the field and wear them out. To grind and grind away. We're hoping for three, four yards a carry." The Pats have prided themselves on not changing their playing style, regardless of the opponent. Because they are essentially trotting out an extra lineman, albeit in the backfield, that style can get old quickly for opposing defenses. Whoever is on the other side of the line finds out right away that the Leddys and Stevens before them - aren't typical backs. "Being on the offensive line kind of helps you." Andrew Leddy said. "The blocking schemes and pushing the sled helps. Gives you better strength in your legs." Both Alex and Andrew have adjusted to fullback without much of a problem. O'Connor said Alex had initial troubles finding the holes, while Andrew saw them but wasn't hitting them with speed, but that all changed quickly. The two of them have each learned the position so well that it makes no difference to O'Connor who is in the game.

THE

GREENWOOD INN Family Restaurant • Est. 1954

They switch out for each other on their own, and the extra rest has helped them keep the chains moving. "I didn't foresee the Leddys being as dominant as they have been," O'Connor said. "They've gotten better as the year's gone on." They've also gotten more comfortable, without losing their lineman mindset. "I actually gained a lot of respect for the running back position, too, because before I felt like the linemen were the ones who did all the work," Alex Leddy said. "Now I realize that if you're a running back you get banged up too. It's not an easy position to play." Being successful in two straight seasons has made the idea of moving another lineman next season a distinct possibility, but O'Connor isn't willing to say that just yet. He knew he had special talents in Stevens and the Leddys. A player of that caliber would have to emerge for O'Connor to continue the trend. If he does, O'Connor will have no problem going back to the well. He'll have no shortage of linemen who are hoping for the opportunity. "There are linemen this year that are juniors who are dreaming of running the ball," O'Connor joked. "It might stay a dream." - Kevin Pomeroy

TURKEY BOWL

When Pilgrim and Vets met last year on Thanksgiving Day, both were starving for a win. The 'Canes were winless for the second consecutive season, and the Pats hadn't won since a nonleague game in September. That set the stage for an intense showdown that ended with a 20-13 Pilgrim win. The circumstances are a little bit different now - Vets got into the win column against Coventry in October and the Pats won three games during the regular season - but the game's meaning hasn't changed. It's as big as it gets. "If you don't win the championship at Pilgrim or Vets, this is the only game that matters," Pilgrim head coach Tom O'Connor said. "If you get in the playoffs, that's great, but you're judged by how you do on the Thanksgiving Day game." Both teams have reason to believe they'll be judged pretty positively. The Pats narrowly missed out on the playoffs after a strong season, losing their final game against Mt. Hope in what was essentially a play-in game. Vets, on the other hand, has played its best football in three seasons, and was on the cusp of grabbing a few more wins than the one it ended up with. Believing they can win won't be a problem, and playing like it shouldn't be one either "I can see it coming that we're going to come out of the gate fired up," Vets head coach Brian Nappa said. "The kids are really looking forward to this game to end their season on a high note." The 'Canes will come into the game with an air of uncertainty around them, as they have used three starting quarterbacks this season and no one has yet been declared the starter for Thanksgiving. Two weeks ago, in a 14-9 loss to Woonsocket, Vets played Diego Martinez under center and ran an option-based offense. Prior to that, it had used both Danny Greaves and Jessie Sedoma as the starter. "They've got three quarterbacks rolling in, so it's a matter of who's hot that day," O'Connor said. "The option quarterback will probably be our biggest worry at quarterback, because we haven't seen a lot of option teams." Pilgrim, on the other hand, should be pretty cut and dry offensively. The Pats have been steadily handing the ball to Alex Leddy, with brother Andrew Leddy getting some work as well, and letting them control the game with their power running. It might not be much of a surprise when Pilgrim lines up and does what everyone expects, but that doesn't make it easy to stop. "They have a good, strong running back," Nappa said. "Leddy runs hard. He's definitely one that we're concerned about. They can throw the ball, too. We have to get pressure on the quarterback, and we have to stop their run. If we can do that, we're looking good." At this point, it's clear that both teams are gearing up for a battle. With rain pouring down last Wednesday, both teams elected to head outside for practice. The focus is there. "They're here every day and they're working hard," Nappa said. "We thought about staying inside (Wednesday) because of the rain, but the kids said, 'Absolutely not.'" Everyone knows the significance of a win on Thanksgiving. "It's one of the last true rivalries left, where both teams come in and they're both competitive year after year," O'Connor said. "As opposed to some of the others that have turned lopsided over time. The importance of this game is monumental to both of our programs." Our Pick: Pilgrim 22, Vets 15 - K.P.

11

TURKEY BOWL

Neither team will be gearing up for the playoffs once the final whistle blows on Thanksgiving, but Cranston East and Cranston West don't need a game with playoff implications to make it mean something. The two teams proved that last year, when they put on one of the most exciting games in series history. East won 14-13 on a late Rob Reardon touchdown run and the ensuing Ahmed Barro extra point, giving the 'Bolts their second straight win over the Falcons With West sitting at 3-4 and East at 2-5, the circumstances are pretty similar to last year's game when West was 2-5 and East was 3-4. And the stakes are still huge. "I don't think it matters if we're both 0-9 or we're both making the playoffs," East head coach Tom Centore. "It's always big because it's Thanksgiving." The Falcons have lost four consecutive Division I games after opening the season 3-0, while the 'Bolts have won two of their last three after beginning 0-4. Yet, with East having won the last two match-ups, West head coach Steve Stoehr is hoping his team can put its

Hendricken will be trying to stretch its Thanksgiving winning streak to 20 this year. The Hawks will once again be favored, but they need only look to last year's game to know that there are no guarantees. Hendricken was on its way to the playoffs and would eventually win the Super Bowl. Toll Gate was just playing out the string. And the game was a good one. The Hawks won 19-0, but it was 6-0 at halftime. "Last year, we went in as favorites, and I thought Toll Gate played a phenomenal game," said Hendricken coach Keith Croft. "Physically, they came out and they hit. The team's profiles this season are similar to last year. The Hawks are 6-2 and ranked second in the state. Toll Gate finished league play 0-7. It won't be easy for the Titans to pull off the upset, but they'll give it a shot. "We want to come out and compete," said Toll Gate coach Matt Mancuso. The Titans are feeling better about themselves thanks to a non-league victory over Coventry last week. They scored a season-high 38 points and got big days from seniors Derick Durand, Nick Carr and Mitch Howkins. They'll be trying

recent struggles in the past and put its best foot forward for one more game. "It would be big for these kids," Stoehr said. "(Running back) Bryan Stetson was the only one who played as a freshman when we beat East. We haven't beaten East the last two years, and they've got a good team." The 'Bolts are led by a balanced offensive attack that has both consistent running from E.J. and Nate Isom and a passing threat with quarterback Kyle Tracy. West's defense has been its calling card, as it has kept the team in games amid some offensive struggles. And on Thanksgiving Day, both coaches expect their opponent's best shot, on both sides of the ball. "I can't explain why they've had a tough time, but I don't think that's who they are," Centore said of West. "I think they're still more typical of what they showed in the first couple of games." "They do a lot of nice things," Stoehr said. "They're very athletic. They're a very good football team." Our Pick: East 20-14 - K.P.

for one more Thursday. "I want them to have fun," Mancuso said. "The last two weeks, especially against Coventry, I think we went out there not worrying about a win or a loss. It was more just going out there and playing." The Titans will have their hands full against the Hawks, though. Hendricken has been playing its best football of late and is bigger than anybody Toll Gate has played. "I don't think they're as fast as they were last year, but they're definitely big up front and it's going to be tough for our young guys," Mancuso said. The Hawks also have their eye on a first-round playoff game, which will be played Tuesday. But when the sun comes up Thanksgiving morning, Croft knows what his team will be focused on. "When you get here the morning of the game and the excitement starts setting in, it takes over," Croft said. "There's a big crowd, there's alumni back. It's a game we want to play well." Our Pick: Hendricken 34, Toll Gate 12 -W.G.

KEY TO THE RUSH: CRANSTON EAST

Isom brothers quite a combo for ’Bolts Nate and E.J. Isom started playing football at an early age. They were in the same league and wearing the same uniforms, but because of their age difference, they were never on the same team. That finally changed this season. Nate, a senior at Cranston East, and E.J., a junior, are both suiting up for the 'Bolts. They've shared the backfield, they've carried the bulk of the load in the running game, and together, they've enjoyed every minute of it. "I love it," Nate said. "I love blocking for him, doing everything for him. I love playing with him. It's the best time of my life." It was a long time coming. E.J. started his high-school career at Hendricken, but he transferred to East early in his sophomore year. Nate was just starting to come into his own with the varsity squad, and the two got a chance to play together briefly in last year's Thanksgiving game. This year, they've been together every step of the way. "I was always looking forward to it," E.J. said. "It didn't come out like I expected it to be this year - I thought it was going to be touchdown after touchdown. But it's been fun. I was always asking to play with him and this year I finally got to." It's been a good thing for all involved. "They were excited," said East head

coach Tom Centore. "I think E.J.'s heart was always here. These are the kids he grew up with, and his brother's here. He's been happy. He's doing well in school and he's grown up tremendously since he's been here. Nate needed to learn to be a team guy and he's done that. They've both done really well. They've grown into their roles." Throughout Centore's tenure, East has had talented runners, but that identity had to change a little bit last year. East relied heavily on quarterback Rob Reardon to get its running game going. This year, with the Isoms leading the way, East has been able to get back to its roots. "They're typical of what we used to have," Centore said. "Those two at any time have a chance to score. Maybe they haven't had everything come together this year in terms of blocking and getting all the chances, but they're very good backs. They're as good as we've had." Nate is the bigger back, listed at 6-feet, 180 pounds. E.J. is 5-feet-8, 170. It makes for a thunder-and-lightning combo, and East hasn't been afraid to use it. If the 'Bolts are running the ball, an Isom is probably carrying it. "They've done well," Centore said. "They've both had good seasons and they've been an integral part of everything, offense and defense."

NATE ISOM (4) and E.J. ISOM (8) With Nate set to finish up his career, the brothers will only have one more game together. They'd like to make the most of it.

"I feel like we're going to shock the world," Nate said. "We've gotten a lot better. I think we're going to bust them." -W.G.

TURKEY BOWL KEY TO THE RUSH: CRANSTON WEST

Three wheels always keep West rolling The wing-T formation isn't anything out of the ordinary for high school football, especially in Rhode Island. Teams all over the state rely on it, utilizing the three-back set to give them more options and to keep the defenses guessing. But few teams have made it work with the regularity that Cranston West has. And this season, though somewhat of a grind, has fit the same blueprint. The Falcons have used senior Joe Manni at the fullback spot, while senior Bryan Stetson and junior Joe Ceraldi have occupied the wing spots. Those three have given West the options it looks for - whether that's utilizing Manni up the middle, running jet sweeps with either wing-back or any of the other possibilities the formation offers. "I've been running the system since I started coaching," Stoehr said. "It's a wing-T, just basically a hybrid wing-T system. It's based on not just having one good back, it's based on having three good backs." Over his years at West, Stoehr has had his share of good backs. Last season, Stetson was in the backfield along with Victor Castriotta and Brent Champagne, and the group consistently gave opposing defenses fits. Years before that, Stoehr had a domi-

nant fullback in Anthony Ferrer, and that opened things up for the wing backs. The Falcons rode that effort to a Super Bowl title in 2004. "The Super Bowl year was great," Stoehr said. "When you have the players like we had back then, you have a fullback that everyone has to stop. Those other guys, they get eight to 10 carries a game and they're going for 100 yards a game." That, more than anything is the theory behind the offense. If a team decides to key on one player, there is somebody else there to handle the load. In this year's version, Stetson has served as the biggest threat, and Manni and Ceraldi are the beneficiaries. "It's no secret - all the defenses know Bryan is one of the fastest guys in the league," Manni said. "To think that we have two other guys that can run decently, I'm sure it puts a little stress on the defense." The distribution of carries is another benefit, as it keeps the Falcons from relying on one player too much and simply burning him out. Just about everybody gets an equal share. "If we're doing good and Manni's running for five yards a pop or (Ceraldi) makes a good run, I look at it like I'm doing that," Stetson said. "We're all one.

JOE MANNI We're not just individual backs. I look at it as one backfield." The biggest drawback is that with three runners on the field, West typically only has one wide receiver on the field. That problem is minimized, however, by trying to incorporate at least one of the backs into the passing game. "What you hope is that one of those backs is a good receiver," Stoehr said, As a whole, the system can lead to big offensive outputs, although that hasn't

exactly been the case for West so far this season. The Falcons have lost four consecutive Division I games. But that won't stop them from keeping with the system that has been effective year after year. The hope is that, on Thanksgiving, it will prove effective once more. "In our offense, you stop one, two, we try to come back with the other," Stoehr said. - K.P.

KEY TO THE RUSH: TOLL GATE

Tough year hasn’t slowed down Durand Nearly every game has been a struggle offensively for the Toll Gate football team this season, but those issues have been minor compared to what they could have been without the presence of Derick Durand. Durand, the Titans' senior fullback, has been their go-to guy since the very first game, and he has been the one consistent performer on a team that has been shut out four times in 10 games. "If it wasn't for him, it would be a lot tougher on offense," Toll Gate head coach Matt Mancuso said. Mancuso, in his first year as coach, knew who Durand was from Mancuso's days as Johnston's defensive coordinator. He saw Durand during summer passing leagues, and when Mancuso took over the Toll Gate job, he was happy to have someone he knew he could rely on while he tried to build up the supporting cast. Durand hasn't disappointed. He's rushed for over 1,000 yards on the season, and has topped the 200-yard mark three times. In Toll Gate's most recent game, a 38-22 win over Coventry, Durand ran for 202 yards on just 16 carries. And he's accomplished all of that while running behind a depleted offensive line that is now starting three sophomores and a freshman. Even with all the issues

DERICK DURAND that the inexperience up front has caused - Durand has frequently found himself getting hit in the backfield - he's done nothing but stay productive while helping the line try to get better. "He just runs hard," Mancuso said. "He never quits. He'll make a mistake, and he'll be the first one to say that it's his fault, not the line's. If he has a big run, he's the first one back there to tell the line good job. He makes those guys want to play for him."

It's all in an effort to help the team improve. "Going through practice every day, we work on the offensive line, trying to pick up yards," Durand said. "Trying to see what can make them better so I can make more yards in the backfield. Like we say, every week we have to get better." The learning curve has been difficult, but it's made easier by the skill set that Durand brings to the table. For instance, the line doesn't need to be

American U

inc. U

CUSTOM FRAMING • MIRRORS & MORE

perfect for him to break a big run. It just needs to give him enough space to operate, and he's proven that he can do the rest. In that Coventry game, he had touchdown runs of 37 and 64 yards. "He's fast, but it's not your natural like 4.2 speed," Mancuso said. "He's football quick. After he hits the hole, once he gets to the next level, that's when his speed shows itself." Everything Durand has accomplished this year has also come with a target on his back. He's played on the varsity team at Toll Gate since his sophomore year, and he's steadily improved. That fact isn't lost on opposing coaches. Though the Titans have a few other options offensively - quarterback Mitch Howkins, running back Jose Javier and running back/receiver Nick Carr, to name a few - everyone knows where Toll Gate is turning if it needs to make a play. "Teams know, when they watch the film, who to gameplan to stop," Mancuso said. "And he's still getting a lot of yards." That hardnosed running has been enough to keep Toll Gate's offense viable during an otherwise difficult season. "At times its tough," Durand said. "But I like taking on the challenge. I like being the go-to guy." - K.P.

KEY TO THE RUSH: HENDRICKEN

Offensive line paves Hendricken’s way The Bishop Hendricken football team hasn't passed the ball much this year. The Hawks' offensive line is perfectly fine with that. "We hear pass and we get mad," joked senior Andrew Breting. Who could blame them? The Hendricken line - Breting, Nick DeCiantis, Max Heintzelman, Billy Stewart and Joe Vincent - has turned into a force this year and has paved the way for a highly successful smashmouth attack. They're okay with a little pass blocking every now and then, but they know the ground game is what makes their team go. And they've gone full speed. The Hawks finished league play with a 6-2 record and clinched the No. 2 seed for the playoffs. The line might be the biggest reason why. Hendricken lost the majority of its starters from last year's state championship team, but with a rapidly improving line as the foundation, the rebuilding process went quickly. "We knew our O-line could be a strength for us this year," said Hendricken head coach Keith Croft. "It took a little while and we were patient with them. They're starting to pay dividends." The line wasn't a finished product right off the bat. They were big and they

were eager, but Heintzelman - an AllStater last year - was the only returning starter. "We had a pretty rocky start," said Stewart, a senior. "Most of us are in classes together so it wasn't difficult to get to know each other, but the transition to varsity was pretty tough." But every step of the way, the unit got better. And they had plenty of opportunities to prove themselves. With Ryan Brannigan, a former running back, moving to quarterback, the Hawks knew their

ground attack would be a key. As soon as the season got underway, Croft challenged the offensive line to make it work. Whenever Hendricken had a lead to protect and whenever it needed to seize control, Croft and his coaches put it on the line. It was their game. "They take pride in that," Croft said. "We tell them we need to control the line of scrimmage, and they go out and do it." They've done it time and again. In a September game against Cranston East, the Hawks put together two long

third-quarter drives that put the game completely out of reach. One went nine plays, the other 15. East had the ball for three plays the entire quarter. In their final league game against Barrington, the Hawks started the second half with an amazing 18-play drive that took almost 10 minutes off the clock. The linemen were loving every minute. "That's the smashmouth football we play," Stewart said. The play of the line has helped Brannigan and running back Louis Falcone have big years. Fullbacks Jullion Pope, McKinley Berriman and Erik Olson have also played well. "It's worked in unison," Croft said. "Not only have the lines improved, but the running backs have gotten better." And the backs don't mind sharing the spotlight. "It's been great this year how much we've been recognized," Breting said. "Those guys are always giving us credit." It's been well-deserved, and the Hendricken line is hoping to keep earning praise. "We really think of each other as a family," said Vincent, a junior. "Blood, sweat and tears, we're in it together. We just push and we don't give up, and we're going to continue to do that until we get to where we want to be." - W.G.
