Glendale Firefighters Save Elderly Female from House Fire Dangerous Hoarding at Home Caused Firefighters to Spend 52 Minutes to Knockdown Flames

On Friday, November 30, 2012 at 1:03 p.m., the Glendale Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire in the 1300 block of N. Jackson Street. 34 firefighters under the direction of Battalion Chief Greg Fish attacked the fire. Glendale Engine 24, first to arrive on-scene, discovered a two story, single-family residence with smoke showing from the attic. A second alarm was declared. An immediate search for occupants was conducted that resulted in the safe evacuation of an elderly female from the home.

Firefighters deployed an aggressive attack on the fire located in the kitchen and attic of the structure. Due to dangerous hoarding conditions within the home, it took firefighters 52 minutes to declare knockdown. The evacuated resident was treated by Glendale Fire Department Paramedics and transported to Glendale Adventist Hospital for medical evaluation due to exposure to products of combustion. There are no reported injuries to firefighters. Damage to the structure is estimated to be $200,000 and an additional $60,000

in damage to the contents. Incident duration was 4 hour and 8 minutes. Fire Investigators concluded that the fire originated in the kitchen. A plastic container was left on the stove when a burner was ignited for cooking. Glendale received support from the Burbank Fire Department. The mission of the Glendale Fire Department is to protect life and property by providing the highest level of service to the community. The California Office of Traffic Safety has awarded Glendale a $225,000 grant to provide additional enforcement measures to combat impaired driving. This is the second traffic safety grant for an AntiDUI program awarded to Glendale in two months. The Glendale Police Department is dedicated to keeping our streets safe through both enforcement and education. “A DUI collision resulting in injury or death is no way to start the holidays. During the excitement and festivities of this season, it is crucial to have a desig-

nated driver to maintain safety on our roadways,” said Glendale Police Chief Ron De Pompa. The DUI Checkpoint grant supports our efforts to reduce the number of persons injured or killed in alcohol and drug related collisions. The grant will specifically target impaired driving offenders as well as educating the public on the dangers of impaired driving through the use of DUI/ driver’s license checkpoints. Specially trained officers will evaluate those suspected of driving under Please see page 3

SoCal Law Enforcement Agencies Prepares for Battle Chiefs and Officers Face Off; Join Red Cross for 7th Annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive Dozens of public safety and law enforcement leaders will join the American Red Cross to launch the 7th Annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive – a spirited competition amongst more than 200 different Southern California law enforcement agencies, each vying to recruit healthy blood donors at a time when donations are scarce. The Battle of the Badges kick-off reception will bring together agency chiefs from

local, state, and federal agencies to collectively encourage their badge-carrying officers to become heroes of a different capacity by helping save lives through blood donations. Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion and Southern California’s community blood supply typically drops to concerning levels following the holiday crunch. Through the Battle of the Badges, our police officers, sheriff deputies, and firefight-

ers across the Southland will go head-to-head to ensure blood is available for local hospital patients, showing that Socal law enforcement Officers and First Responders are committed to giving back to the communities in which they live and serve. Baca Won’t Turn Illegal Immigrants Over to ICE In a report Wednesday by The Los Angles Times, County Sheriff Lee Baca says he will no longer hand over illegal immigrants arrested for minor crimes to the feds. The newspaper said that Baca overturned his position on participating in the federal Secure Communities Program. The program calls for local law enforcement to send all arrestees’ fingerprints to ICE.. If the person is a suspected illegal immigrant, authorities can request the local agency hold the person for 48 hours until a transfer to federal custody.

Supervisor Antonovich emphasized the need to work with the input and cooperation of all our cities and unincorporated communities. “We must stop undermining communities including the San Fernando Valley, by sending their tax dollars over the hill to the Subway and Expo Line projects. Barricaded El Monte Murder Suspect Taken into Custody by LASD in Upland

-Photo Courtesy of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stabbing death of a man which occurred on October 28, 2012 at approximately 4:00 A.M. in the 11000 block of Dodson Avenue, El Monte. Street, Upland. The suspect barricaded himself in an apartment building resulting in the evacuation of the apartment complex for hours on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012. After a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Special Weapons Team (Special Enforcement Bureau) responded to the location and deployed ordinance and a K-9 unit, Suspect Tamayo was ultimately taken into custody for Murder at about 7:30PM Thursday.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Assemblyman Mike Gatto Initiates Federal Constitutional Amendment to Overturn Citizens United Decision Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Los Angeles) has introduced Assembly Joint Resolution (AJR) 1, a measure that begins the process to amend the United States Constitution to nullify the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. In Citizens United, a deeply divided Supreme Court held that corporations are due the same free-speech rights enjoyed by natural persons. The decision spawned “Super PACs,” which have flooded unlimited corporate money into federal elections, and has provided fodder for comedian Stephen Colbert and others who have lampooned the notion that “corporations are people too.” AJR 1 features a rarely used process for amending the federal Constitution. Typically, amendments must start in Congress and then must be ratified by 3/4 of the states. AJR 1, however, takes advantage of a procedure, outlined in Article V of the Constitution, whereby states may demand that Congress act. If just 2/3 of the states make such a demand, Congress must call a constitutional convention on the topic. Several states and

municipalities have passed informal resolutions condemning the Citizens United decision, but they have all been informal requests asking Congress to act. AJR 1, on the other hand, could eventually force Congress to act. “I felt real action is essential now. Instead of issuing a resolution condemning the decision, why not start the process to actually amend the Constitution?” commented Assemblyman Gatto, “Voters are fed up with the notion that money is speech and that big money can drown out the speech of average citizens.” Super PACs have been the source of much controversy since the Citizens United decision. Recent reports indicate that casino magnate Sheldon Adelson spent close to $150 million this election cycle alone, in an effort to defeat President Barack Obama and elect Republicans to Congress. Adelson contributed $15 million to the Super PAC “Winning Our Future” with the hopes of winning former House Speaker Newt Gingrich the Republican presidential nomination, and after those efforts proved futile, he gave $20 million to

“Restore Our Future,” the primary Super PAC supporting presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s run at the White House. “I doubt our Founding Fathers had corporations in mind when they drafted the First Amendment,” said Gatto. “But the Founding Fathers did anticipate that every once in a while, the states would need to prod Congress to act, to amend the Constitution.” To pass in California, AJR 1 requires consideration and adoption by the State Assembly and Senate. Upon approval, a copy of the Resolution will be delivered to the presiding officers of several state legislatures for consideration and to federal officials. AJR 1 calls for a convention that would be limited to consider the Citizens United decision only. The state-initiated process has been tried before, and has fallen short of success by one or two states a few times, with the earliest being in 1893 and the most recent being 1939. “The U.S. Constitution should be amended to invalidate the Citizens United decision, and with this, we initiate the national effort to do so,” said Gatto.

Thai Airways Launches New Boeing 777 Service from LAX By Greg Aragon I’ve always been intrigued and fascinated by Thailand. With its beautiful beaches and landscape, ancient temples, exotic cuisine and culture, and all around great bang-for-the-buck, the tiny country is on my short list of Asian countries to visit. So when I heard that Thai Airways recently began flying a new luxurious Boeing jet from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Bangkok, I had to learn more. My investigation took me to Boeing headquarters in Seattle last month, where the company was holding a special delivery ceremony for the B777-300ER, one of Boeing’s most modern and popular new aircrafts. At headquarters, we toured an incredible showroom of Boeing’s top line of new jets. Similar to a new car showroom, the facility is where Airline executives and billionaires come to see the latest planes and shop. The building features 3-D

movies of new aircraft and exact mockups of the interior cabins. During my visit, I got to climb inside mockups of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a 737, and the 777. The 787 is a long-range, mid-size wide-body, twinengine plane that seats about passengers, that Boeing says consumes 20% less fuel than the similarly-sized 767 aircraft. The 737 is a short- to medium-range twin-engine, narrow body plane with passenger capacity between 85 and 215. And then there is the 777, which Thai Airways introduced into their line-up. The world’s largest twin-engine jet, the Boeing 777 has a capacity of over 300 passengers and a range of more than 9,300 miles, depending on the model. The aircraft was created with the help of eight different airlines to replace older wide-body planes and fit in the middle of the 767 and 747 jets. It is also one of the most modern and safe planes around. “The 777 takes luxury to new heights,” says Steve Haro, cabin interior brand design, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “The Boeing Signature Interior on the 777 is the most spacious passenger

cabin ever developed making flying productive for business travelers, restful for leisure travelers, and enjoyable for all on board.” In the 777 model designed for Thai Airways, business class passengers will have seats that recline into fully flat beds. In economy class, travelers will have 18.5inch wide seats, the widest in the industry. “The 777-300ER’s interior provides a wealth of space and opportunity to highlight our unique brand of service,” says Teerapol Chotichanapibal, an executive customer service rep with Thai Airways. “Boeing continuously develops new ways to increase passenger comfort, helping passengers rediscover the joy of flight.” Thai Airways has customized their 777-300ER with a state-of-the-art in-flight entertainment system. With larger screens and touchcontrol commands, passengers can learn the basics of a new language, browse a wide selection of music and movie choices, play interactive games, and even practice meditation. Highlights of the new Thai Airlways 777 include

42 Royal Silk Class (business class) seats that become beds, and come with 15” personal TV screens; 304 economy seats with a seat pitch of 32” and a 10.6” personal TV screen; Internet access via GPRS; and award-winning Thai Airlines in-flight service. Thai Airways began flying the B777-300ER from

Los Angeles to Bangkok in October. The flight includes a stopover in Seoul (SEL). The new aircraft will bring an extended range of passenger comfort. The airline provides four weekly flights departing from LAX on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Fares start as low as $1,109* and can be booked via your lo-

cal travel agent or through (877) THAI AIR or www. ThaiAirwaysUSA.com. THAI is the national carrier of Thailand with services to more than 74 destinations in 36 countries and five continents. For more information on THAI, please call 800-426-5204 or visit www.ThaiAirwaysUSA. com.

132 Arrested and 56 Weapons Confiscated in October DISARM Sweeps During the month of October, Los Angeles County D.I.S.A.R.M. officers arrested 132 probationers and confiscated 56 firearms and over $7 million in illegal drugs and drug money, announced Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich. In conjunction with local law enforcement, 1308 searches were conducted of probationers who, as a condi-

tion of probation, are subject to unannounced searches targeting guns, drugs and other contraband. Since its implementation in February of 2000, the D.I.S.A.R.M. program has seized over 8,800 weapons and more than $396 million in illegal drugs and drug money and resulted in nearly 18,000 arrests. Nearly 10 percent of probationers searched in this

program have been found to be out of compliance with the terms of their probation. D.I.S.A.R.M was initiated by Supervisor Antonovich following the tragic August 1999 shootings at the North Valley Jewish Community Center and the murder of a postal worker by Buford Furrow, an armed felon on probation from Washington State.

Twinkies, Ding Dongs, and Wonder Bread Children with Special Needs Not Recommended by William Dufty and Enjoy 19th Annual United Airlines the Iconic Gloria Swanson in 1977 Fantasy Flight to North Pole By Harry Sneider My career as a professional fitness trainer, coach of Olympians and friend of celebrities included the iconic Gloria Swanson. Do you remember the movie “Sunset Boulevard” where Gloria was the famous Norma Desmond with the great William Holden? This 4’11” bombshell was walking on the Ambassador College track where I was coaching Olympians for the 1980 Games. The tiny lady came to me and said, “What are you feeding that Olympian?” She warned me not to give these great athletes too much sugar. At the time she was married to the award winning author William Dufty who had written the best seller “Sugar Blues”, available on Amazon.com. She told me that she had found sugar to be a dangerous ingredient to all of us for our overall health. She told me “Eat whole grains. Drink pure water. Start the morning with a banana. When hungry eat fruits and vegetables, occasionally some fish.” Gloria had survived major illnesses because of her health regime. With her husband she had discovered some interesting techniques that food producers are using to get our nation addicted to sugar. She paralleled the addiction to sugar like it was a drug. She even mentioned that cigarette manufacturers put sugar in tobacco to increase the desire for this very dangerous habit. Where does this all fit in with the current talk and debate about Twinkies,

Ding Dongs, and Wonder Bread? I’m sure we’ve all had these treats growing up. I still remember in the school lunches many of the children had these sugary addictive treats. Sugar is good in moderation, but has an addictive component that can lead to diabetes, obesity, decayed teeth, alcoholism and possibly even cancer. There are reported major mood swings with sugar addiction and one can get very hyper and in a few hours be in the depths of depression. So you are encouraged to keep eating those Twinkies, Zingers, and Ding Dongs throughout the day. This is not good for overall health. Gloria Swanson warned me not to let the Olympic athletes as well as my family and friends get into these negative addictive habits. Now for a solution to this sugar addiction: Can you change little by little to fruits like bananas, water-

melon, cantaloupe, strawberries, blueberries, apples, oranges, grapes, pears, and other natural fruits? They contain natural sugars and are good for your overall health. Start the morning with a whole grain cereal like oats, millet, and wheat. This will give you energy and give you muscle building nutrition if you include some protein like eggs, yogurt, and fish. Your lunch can include vegetable soups with whole grain bread turkey or tuna sandwiches. About 120 children with special needs participated in the 19th Annual United Airlines Fantasy Flight Program at Los Angeles International Airport on December 1. In an event sponsored by United Airlines, employees working with the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) joined together with children who are wards of the court, special needs, and children with life threatening illnesses. The day began with a trip to the Los Angeles International Airport. Once there, all the children, social workers, and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s personnel, boarded a 747 Airliner for a 1 ½ hour trip

to the “North Pole.” At the conclusion of the flight, they returned to LAX and landed at a closed terminal that was decorated as “Santa’s Village” for a holiday celebration. Once at Santa’s Village, the kids sat with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus and received gifts. For many of these participants this is the only opportunity they will have to experience a holiday celebration. United Airlines and their staff donated their time and the 747 airplane for this special event. Sheriff’s reserve and regular deputies and other personnel volunteered their time to assist, provide security, and give the kids an opportunity to interact with law enforcement.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department became involved in the Fantasy Flight Program 19 years ago when a United Airlines employee, who was also a Reserve Deputy Sheriff, suggested that United Airlines join with the Sheriff’s Department to provide security for the event and the kids. Each year this special event has grown and brings holiday cheer to many deserving children in need. If you are feeling the holiday spirit, you are welcome to donate a toy to the LASD 2012 Toy Drive. Inspire A Child: Donate a new unwrapped toy valued at $10. or more by dropping it off at your local Sheriff’s Station.

for the leading man, Jim, a WWII hero who gives Maria the Nutcracker doll which kicks off a whirlwind journey of Christmas Wonder. Under the artistic direction and founded by former American Ballet Theatre dancer and Los Angeles native Robyn Gardenhire, CBLA began as a school in 2000 and then as a professional company in 2001. CBLA has worked since its inception to become a dance institution of and for Los Angeles - offering training at low or no cost to children from the economically depressed Pico Union District, introducing ballet to thousands of elementary school students throughout Los Angeles, and developing a company that reflects the diversity of its city and bringing ballet to new audiences. Devoted to bringing ballet training to underpriv-

ileged children, Gardenhire has formed a relationship with the prestigious Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts, allowing her older students to study at the school on Saturdays, while CBLA provides training for students seeking a solid ballet background before they enter the high school. Providing Los Angeles with its own ballet company unique and representative of its multicultural community, CBLA presents work that is a mixture of classical and contemporary dance theater, examining untraditional themes and blending music from all over the world. In keeping with the tradition of classical dance, CBLA preserves the standards of excellence in its presentation of art of dance and presents quality artistic programming and training to all dancers and audience members from different cultural and ethic

ICE Deports Two Korean Criminal Wisconsin and Stanford Set to Play in the 99th Rose Bowl Game® Suspects Captured in Los Angeles Area The Wisconsin Badgers, champions of the Big Ten Conference, and the No. 6 BCS-ranked Stanford Cardinal, champions of the Pac-12 Conference, have earned berths to play in the 99th Rose Bowl Game presented by VIZIO at 1:30 p.m. PT (5:30 p.m. ET) on Tuesday, January 1, 2013, at the Rose Bowl Stadium. “The Tournament of Roses is honored to host the University of Wisconsin and Stanford University to play in The Granddaddy of Them All®,” Tournament of Roses President Sally Bixby said. “As home of the Big Ten and Pac-12 Conference champions, we are proud of our long standing partnership and look forward to a terrific match-up.” Wisconsin finished the year with an 8-5 overall record (4-4 in conference). The Badgers earned the Big Ten Conference BCS automatic qualifier after defeating the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Big Ten Football Championship Game, 70-31. They are making their third consecutive and ninth appearance all-time in the Rose Bowl Game. Head coach Bret Bielema becomes the first Badger coach in history to achieve the accomplishment and first Big Ten coach to do so since Bo Schembechler in the late 1970’s. Wisconsin is 3-5 in its Rose Bowl Game appearances. Stanford closed out the regular season at 11-2, (8-1 in conference) and defeated the UCLA Bruins in the Pac-12 Football Championship Game to earn

the Pac-12 BCS automatic qualifier. The Cardinal is making its third consecutive BCS bowl appearance in as many years and its 13th appearance all-time in the Rose Bowl Game. Head coach David Shaw became the fifth coach in conference history to win back-to-back Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors. Stanford is 5-6-1 in its Rose Bowl Game appearances with its last coming in 2000. January 1 will mark the sixth meeting all-time between the Badgers and Cardinal and second Rose Bowl Game match-up; the last contest took place in Pasadena for the 2000 Rose Bowl Game in which Wisconsin went on to win, 17-9. Pregame festivities for the 99th Rose Bowl Game presented by VIZIO begin at 1:30 p.m. PT (4:30 p.m. ET) and include musical performances by the

university bands as well as the official coin toss by 2013 Rose Parade Grand Marshal, Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN with Brent Musburger, Kirk Herbstreit and Heather Cox calling the action. Prior to kickoff, the B-2 Spirit based at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri will fly over the stadium in honor of the men and women serving our country in the armed forces, and in tribute to The Granddaddy of Them All. The B-2 Spirit is a multi-role aircraft in service to the United States Air Force and is capable of delivering its array of tools anywhere on the globe through previously impenetrable defenses. The 99th Rose Bowl Game presented by VIZIO is sold out. For more information please visit www. tournamentofroses.com.

Fugitives Sought By Korea for Sex Trafficking and Financial Fraud

Two South Korean women - one wanted in her native country for sex trafficking, the other for large scale financial fraud - were turned over to South Korean law enforcement representatives at the airport in Seoul Thursday by officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Kyung Hwa Choi, 39, and Sun Hee Kim, 42, were returned to South Korea by commercial aircraft, accompanied by officers from ICE’s Office of Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO). Choi is the subject of a South Korean arrest warrant issued in March 2008 charging her with financial fraud. According to the warrant, between 2000 and 2008, Choi and a partner operated a trading business that duped investors out of the equivalent of $8 million. One month after that warrant was issued, Choi entered the U.S. on a tourist visa, which authorized her to remain in the country for no

more than six months. Last month, Choi was arrested at her Adelanto home by ERO officers, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. An immigration judge subsequently granted Choi voluntary departure under safeguards to South Korea. Kim, meanwhile, faces charges of sex trafficking in her native country. Earlier this year, the South Korean consulate in Los Angeles alerted ERO about the outstanding criminal warrant. The warrant accuses Kim of “buying” three Korean women for $20,000 in 2005 and forcing them to work as prostitutes in Los Angeles. ERO officers took Kim into custody in August and she was ordered removed by an immigration judge last month. “Foreign criminal fugitives who seek to escape responsibility for their actions by fleeing to the United States will find no sanctuary in Southern California,” said Timothy S. Robbins, field

office director for ERO Los Angeles. “As these two cases make clear, ICE is working closely with law enforcement agencies here and abroad to protect public safety and hold criminals accountable --- no matter where they commit their crimes.” Robbins noted that the capture and repatriation of growing numbers of foreign criminal fugitives shows the significant public safety benefits of expanded cooperation and communication between the Department of Homeland Security and foreign law enforcement agencies. Since Oct. 1, 2009, ERO has removed more than 500 foreign fugitives from the United States who were being sought in their native countries for serious crimes, including kidnapping, rape and murder. ERO works with ICE’s Office of International Affairs, foreign consular offices in the United States, and Interpol to identify foreign fugitives illegally present in the country.
