Greetings from Beacons W

Welcome to Beacons, the first of what will become an annual festival of arts and innovative sounds for the Yorkshire Dales! It is with genuine excitement that we bring you this celebration, the product of 12 months preparation, which we know will have been well worth it. We have tried to realise our vision of a festival that supports off-the-wall and new music while bringing a choice selection of legendary acts to the stage. We’ve also brought together the installation art, fancy-dress tomfoolery, décor and leftfield performance encounters we feel are key to the proper festival experience; and that’s not forgetting the heart-warming and quality nosh, real ales and tasty cocktails to keep you going for three days. We have been humbled by the level of support we have been shown following the floods that sadly caused us to cancel last years event. We wish to thank all those who offered kind words, helping hands and voluntary contributions, because you’ve helped us pull together something bigger, better, more colourful and more imaginative for 2012. Let the vision of an intimately sized yet forward-thinking festival for the North materialize this weekend…. Because we’d love to share it with you! Now grab yourself a beer and have an unforgettable Beacons 2012. Contents Page Page Page Page Page Page Page Page Page Page Page

Artists A – Z 2:54 2:54 incorporates a rock and punk lineage influenced by Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss. With exciting, hooky, melodic songs there is plenty of substance under all that style. AARTEKT Their vibe can be loosely described as a unique blend of House and Electronica, infused with organic elements. Their dynamic and exciting sets include live vocals, synths and percussion. A RAVE CALLED SHARON This collective preaches the word of house music, demonstrating the beauty of nostrings attached partying. If you haven’t already, it’s time to join the fast-growing Sharon family. ABIE PHILBIN BOWMAN Sex, Lies & The KKK: The night Barack Obama was elected US President, Abie Philbin Bowman exclusively interviewed the Ku Klux Klan. The controversial comedian asks: wasn’t Jesus mixed-race? When does promiscuity become romantic multitasking? ADMIRAL FALLOW Having built an impressive following in Scotland with their typically rousing and epic folk music, Admiral Fallow are now bringing their Elbow-esque anthems south of the border with their second album ‘Tree Bursts In Snow’. ANDREW WEATHERALL PRESENTS A LOVE FROM OUTER SPACE (pictured) Presenting his latest project in conjunction with Sean Johnston, Andrew Weatherall’s ‘A Love From Outer Space’ is a disco journey that will take Beacons on a dizzying ride with a selection of coldblooded narco-disco and dark-hearted rockabilly. ANTIBANG Antibang are animals, enough said.

APROSODIA BY ED CARTER Inspired by his fascination with composition, Ed Carter’s recent project Aprosodia will offer a new piece of instrumental music for Beacons Festival using written text relating to the festival as the ‘notation’. Stamped into the score of a mechanical music box, the text will generate the central melodies of the performance. ARTHUR BEATRICE Arthur Beatrice are a London-based quartet who are about as far removed from such visceral viciousness as you can get. In fact, they sound irredeemably prim and we say ‘irredeemably’ but we don’t necessarily mean it as a bad thing. AU PALAIS Hailing from London this duo’s compositions are mini-soundtracks for wistful moments. Sharing a similar soundscape to Canadian Grimes, this music is a touch more brooding and melancholy, cinematic and bold. B>E>A>K> With a fearsome reputation for energetic live shows, expect lively compositions from these sons of Sunderland’s rich music scene. BANGARANG Bangarang purvey the sounds of vintage Jamaica from Ska to Rocksteady, Reggae and Roots all played from authentic vinyl. BEN PIKE With his incredible and intricate guitar skills and deep blue vocals, Ben is hugely admired singer songwriter on the Leeds music scene. BEST FRIENDS Under-fed, shred till you’re dead! Pork life! BLACKLISTERS There’s a darkly comic edge to the Blacklisters sound, but you probably won’t find yourself laughing when Billy MasonWood is prowling around the crowd with

his thousand-yard stare, as his band churn away behind him. BOBALICIOUS Hugely respected by all of us at Beacons as a fine selector and DJ to boot, Bobalicious will be here this year to lay down the law. BOK BOK Bok Bok (aka Alex Sushon) likes a challenge. He’s set up the Night Slugs label and last year released his first solo EP on the label, the Southside EP. He’s also shared vinyl space with the likes of Modeselektor, SBTRKT and Ramadanman. CASINO TIMES It is hard to pigeon hole the Casino Times sound with such varied backgrounds in music and taste, Nick and Joe both want to bring a real amalgamation to their productions and the dance-floor. CASS MCCOMBS With the musical heritage of his Californian upbringing threaded through his majestic compositions, Cass McCombs’ inviting and comforting folk songs thoroughly defy the aloofness with which he presents himself to the world. CLOCK OPERA Weaving found sounds and field recordings into majestic, Elbow-like arrangements Clock Opera make grandeur and chestswelling emotion the order of the day. Coming on like orchestral maneuvers in the dark of the night, there’s also a nifty line in striking videos, like the urban gloom of ‘Lesson No. 7,’ a somber accompaniment to a soaring anthem. CLOUD NOTHINGS Whilst Cloud Nothings have always been a vehicle for its core member, Dylan Baldi, lately they are evolving into more of a solid unit, with a heavier take on the lo-fi pop of their debut last year. D/R/U/G/S (pictured) Live sampling makes this show a hallucinating ride, D/R/U/G/S have been gathering praise and plaudits in clubland at an alarming rate and 2012 should see more releases for those still hungry after last year’s ‘Love/Lust’ and ‘Connected’ EPs.

DANCING YEARS (FORMERLY JOSEPH & DAVID) These boyhood friends write breathtaking songs of friendship, family, love and loss. Along the way they have gathered an army of fans from their live performances that have left audiences speechless. DANIEL AVERY With a musical taste that spans far and wide beyond dance genres, a melting pot of influences has been poured into the production work of Daniel Avery. Expect to hear remixing and reworking to the likes of The 2 Bears, Joakim, Metronomy and Hercules & Love Affair. DANIEL BYE How much is beauty worth? What will people pay for an air guitar on eBay? Can I have a glass of milk? These urgent questions and others are answered in The Price of Everything, a performance lecture/ stand-up storytelling show about value. DEAD SONS Dead Sons continue to grow as one, exploring all dimensions of songwriting and noise making. Not afraid to push the limits and always striving for the perfect sound. DEAN ATKINS Expect only the choicest cuts of soul, the rawest R&B and the downright funkiest of funk, served up with Dean’s own inimitable style, honed whilst travelling Europe and DJing as part of the Soul Jazz Records Sound System. DISCLOSURE They effortlessly combine the 2-step rhythms of garage and basslines of dubstep with their own rich musical heritage including soul, jazz and 90’s hip hop. Their music is set to erupt on dance floors across the globe. DONGA Donga plays our Greendales stage on Saturday. DOUBLE MUSCLE Three-piece, loud band from Leeds, UK. Big fans of Japanese footballers, science, WuTang Clan and Dinosaur Jr.

an interview with ghostpoet We caught up with Oboru Ejimiwe, aka Ghostpoet, in the early throes of the summer festival season. While he was cooking up a post-run dinner at home, we chatted to him about new material and how his life has changed since last summer. He was ‘blissfully’ unaware of this year’s Beacons line-up but when we enlightened him, he was particularly excited to hear his pal Jessie Ware’s name on the honour roll… Do you approach festival sets differently to your own gigs? “Not really. I guess there’s a different atmosphere. The majority of people may not know who you are. I always used to be of the mind that I had to try and entice people in… but now I just enjoy it. People at festivals are always out to have a fun time, so it’s always good.” We caught your set at Glastonbury last year. That was just before things really blew up for you, right? Before the Mercury nomination? How much have things changed for you since then?

“I think it was, yeah… Yeah, I guess people are more into my music and people recognise it a bit more. I mean, thinking back to Glastonbury, I think it’s been a natural progression since then really.” What’s been inspiring your writing for the next album? “Same as always – life, really. Though it’s slightly different from when I wrote the first album. I’m trying to evolve, musically and see what happens musically.” On last year’s album, the songs seemed to portray someone who was searching for direction. Would you agree with that? Would you say you’ve found that direction now? “Yeah, to a certain extent. I think life is a constant pursuit of direction. Well, I can only talk for myself, but I don’t really want to find my direction, if that makes sense. Because then life would be boring. Because then I’d just be following one route for the rest of my life and that’s not really something that I want to do. I mean, the first album, a lot of those songs were written before I was making music professionally. I’m definitely happier, more at ease with my existence, still got things I want to improve. I’m sure it’s the same for a lot of people.”

greetingsfrombeacons.com : page 10

And how are you evolving, musically? “Well, that first album, it was rudimentary (laughs)! I’ve got more life experience, more experience of music production, where I am musically and mentally now… if I knew then what I knew now, I’d have changed lots of things.” Do you write on the road? “I write whenever it catches me really – it could be at home, it could be on the road. I try and get stuff down any which way I can, really, on scraps of paper, whatever.” What do you have in store for the rest of the summer? “Focusing on being happy. As much as possible. What makes me happy? Just having the freedom to be doing what I want to do, really. Be it going to a nice restaurant, or getting a new tattoo, meeting new people, or reading something inspirational.” Words: Hayley Avron.

EAGULLS Eagulls are absolutely brutal, managing to be both ramshackle and ridiculously tight in the same breath. Labelled as hardcore and punk, both have had influence on their sound but the band embellish upon both. ERRORS With their latest album ‘Have Some Faith in Magic’, Errors have taken a step away from the banging Justice-style beats of their earlier records and a step towards the chill-wave sound that has everybody riled right now. EZY RYDER DJ Ezy Ryder breaks off from his current tour of the Norfolk broads to join us for what can only be described as an utterly shambolic display of what he thinks is quality entertainment. Watch this space! FACTORY FLOOR (pictured) The last year or so has really seen Factory Floor raising eyebrows and heart rates in the UK. With the glassy vocals of Nik Void over cool Germanic beats, their live shows are fast becoming the stuff of underground folklore. FAWN SPOTS Manic, fuzzy, lo-fi pop. For fans of No Age, Black Flag and feedback. FILTHY DUKES Heading down to Beacons with their DJ hats on, Filthy Dukes are no strangers to a party running the ‘Kill ‘Em All’ club night and label in London and a reputation for bringing bands such as Digitalism, Crystal Castles and Metronomy to wider attention. FRANCESCA PIDGEON 2011 was quite a year for this 17-year-old emerging Leeds artist. After joining ELFM’s Next Generation training programme in April she hasn’t looked back and the year culminated in playing to an audience of 15,000 people at the Leeds Lights switch on. FRANK CHICKENS A pop performance group founded in 1982, who had an independent chart hit with ‘We Are Ninja’, released 5 albums and toured worldwide including Glastonbury Festival’s second stage, NY’s Limelight Club, Sydney Trade Union Club, The Rock Festival in

Kazakhstan and Club Duckie at Royal Vauxhall Tavern. FRANKIE & THE HEARTSTRINGS Frankie & The Heartstrings, a 5-piece band from Sunderland, have spent the last two years touring endlessly, this is evident in their incredible live performances, so look forward to a fun and entertaining set. FREAKIN York’s premier house crew have been pushing the sound of underground house to the highest order for 15 years now, FREAKIN is a Beacons favorite. Head down to the social any time of day or night to get your groove on! FUN ADULTS As the year turned 2012 Tough Love Records were suggesting that Fun Adults might be the band to take the ‘esoteric rock’ mantle from Wild Beasts. With a captivating blend of electronica and introverted pop, they certainly have the material to match the demands, with offbeat vocals, layered over rich instrumentation. GEORGE MAHOOD AND GUMBO Mahood has a reputation for breaking funk records to the northern soul scene whilst Gumbo is making waves on the Rare Soul/ Funk scene more than ever. Together they run the highly acclaimed SOUL CITY event. GET FUNKED Playing a part in every former Moor Music Festival, York based duo Get Funked now bring their hip-hop, soul and funk vibe to Beacons. Expect some cuts of the very finest order as they are joined by special guest Dan Watts of the Brighton Gogglez collective. GHOSTPOET Last year the softly spoken rapper found himself in the company of PJ Harvey and Elbow when his debut album Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam was nominated for a Mercury Music Prize. Ghostpoet has a gentle presence, muddling through the treacle of modern life. GOODNIGHT LENIN Goodnight Lenin sit firmly in the current crop of folk music that’s convincing everyone that it’s 1965 and electricity

greetingsfrombeacons.com : page 11

hasn’t been invented yet. Historical accuracy aside, Goodnight Lenin released ‘The Wenceslas Square EP,’ through Static Caravan, where they are labelmates with Laura J Martin, Tunng and Beth Jeans Houghton. GRASS HOUSE Good time enthusiasts! GREAT WAVES The group plays a unique blend of alternative rock and folk, that has been likened to everything from Allison Krauss to The Pixies. GROSS MAGIC Sitting somewhere between the grungepop of Yuck and the glam rock of T-Rex, Gross Magic has a tendency towards invention and theatrics; while his love of ELO is also unabashed and played out for all to see. HAWK EYES These rockers have undergone a serious transformation. Their recent shift in sound is ambitious and powerful, definitely steering them towards bigger venues, bigger crowds and reviews that go up to 11. HAYLEY GAFTARNICK Through her continued support of young, local artists Hayley has become one of Leeds best loved and most respected performers. She has a unique, soulful voice making the jazz, folk and blues she performs her very own. HEY SHOLAY Every ounce as blisteringly dense with musical sunshine as you would imagine a band named Hey Sholay might be. Add in the sensibilities of a sixties girl group, imbued with heavy Northern cynicism and you’re part way there. HOLOGRAMS (pictured) With their low-slung post punk sound, Holograms ring out a desolate youth and squalid existence. They have taken the essence of early British punk and spun it into the fabric of 2012. HOOKWORMS A hypnotic rumble of bass and guitars that truly howl, they do psychedelia on a razor’s edge, in a world where melodrama and

delay pedals collide. HUXLEY Raised on a diet of UK & US Garage, House and early rave music, Huxley has moulded his music into what can only be called his own distinctive brand of house. ILGHAZI Ilghazi joins our line up to play the Greendales stage on Saturday. IMP With a sense of adventure running through their exuberant songs, IMP draw their inspiration from American bands that like things scuzzy and lo-fi, but aren’t scared of a melody or two. IRIE VIBES The Irie Vibes Soundsystem is York’s biggest underground soundsystem weighing in at a chest rumbling 10kW, bringing a regular dose of the Caribbean culture to the city and now to Beacons 2012. JACOBEAN RUFF A brand new band with a whole heap of history: Jacobean Ruff mix up blues, soul, indie and anything else they can get their hands on, here is a band that will very soon have the words ‘ones to watch’ attached to them. Let’s just say we told you so. JACQUES ADDA Jacques Adda plays the Greendales stage on Saturday. JACUZZI BOYS Drawing their influence from the landmark shopping malls of Miami, the end result for you, the listener, is a raft of primal punk. They’re the sound of youth fading fast and glamour fading faster. JAM CITY The man behind Jam City’s something of a genre-avoider: the slovenly bounce of dubstep is often there, but fused with silken techno and house influences. JAMIE FLETCHER BAND Jamie has gathered together a group of talented musicians that show off his engaging and immediate songs to their full strength. A blast of pure pop goodness!

JAPANDROIDS This Vancouver duo have gotten themselves a reputation for somehow performing the work of twice as many men and creating stadium-proof rock anthems, they sure know how to cut the fat off their joints. JAPANESE FIGHTING FISH Japanese Fighting Fish are a mysterious lot: ringmaster, funeral director, tree lopper and frightening, brooding, shadow beating drums to it all. Likened to Queens of the Stone Age and Captain Beefheart. JESSIE WARE (pictured) After collaborations with some of the most respected producers on the electronic spectrum including the fantastic SBTRKT Jessie has fast cemented herself as one of the freshest talents to emerge from the UK underground. JODEAN SUMNER – IT STARTS LIKE THIS ‘It Starts Like This’ was developed out of Jodean’s interest in the fluidity of meaning and the development of languages. This is a humorous look at our relationship to texts, in terms of the spoken, heard and visual. JON K (HOYA HOYA) Now a Hoya:Hoya resident, Jon K moves from genre to genre with absolute ease, as well as a genuine passion and a deep knowledge of whatever he plays – just ask anyone who knows him or has seen him play. JONNY CRAWSHAW Principally a 45 collector, Jonny Crawshaw is known for his eclectic dance-floor friendly sets, covering all bases from funk, soul & jazz, though reggae into hip hop and beyond. JUFFAGE This is a one-man band specializing in thumping drums and loop pedals. Juffage has been on the road and now he brings his larger-than-life performance style to Beacons. JULIO BASHMORE A product of the Bristol bass scene, the king of deep house comes to Beacons with a bag full of his finest soulful vibes.

JUNIOR BOYS Junior Boys make cerebral soul, born for the dance floor, gathering shards of dubstep and electronica along the way. Melancholy and uplifting at once. KEFAYA Kefaya (previously called Kalimero) are an exciting new UK-based collaboration with a totally unique sound. KING KRULE With a voice that belies his teenage years, King Krule is a dreamer, making the kind of music that could soundtrack your most languid thoughts. With a Cockney twang that recalls Joe Strummer, his lyrics are pure poetry, guitar playing sophisticated. KORELESS Cutting up vocals over spacious beats, he’s been compared to James Blake but is equally aligned with fellow heart-stringtuggers Submerse and Resketch. Come to dance, prepare to weep. KRL His take on house music plays heavily around recycling audio; vocals, samples, recordings and rhythms. Tracks like Chase, Machine Code and There Is Nothin’ You Can Teach Me exemplify his soul injected house music, with deep basslines and an original ear for vocals and samples. KWES Kwes makes gentle, art-felt electronica that manages to sound both piecemeal and wholesome, all at once. LAB MEAT An enlightened ham hoc of absurdist Cabaret splendor. A mashup of substandard ideas blended into an exacting viscosity of thick boiled stew. Be prepared to take up your meaty wings as conspirators to the seeds of mischief and mayhem. LAKOSA Lakosa will be joining our lineup of DJs to play the Greendales stage on Saturday. LANTERNS ON THE LAKE A gentle representation of the bleak spirit of the North East, the languishing folk of Lanterns on the Lake will be the perfect antidote for your two-day hangover.

LIZ REYNOLDS One of Leeds’ best-loved secrets, this duo never fails to leave their audience captivated. LOUISE DISTRAS The personification of great punk rock, outlaw spirit and renegade soul, Louise Distras sings of desperate situations, dodging bullets, final stands and hostile towns. LUNICE Mixing up hip-hop and electro in a manner that suggests he’s trying to translate schizophrenia into sound. Lunice has been working with girl-of-the-moment Azealia Banks, as well as remixing Thunderheist and The Touch. Hold on to your straitjackets. LUV JAM Luv*Jam – the only biog we can see for him is the bizarre… 58% Rabbit / 16.1% Hedgehog / 4% Squirrel / 3.7% Fox / 3.4% Badger / 1.6% Rat / 1% Deer / 1% Stoat, Weasel, Polecat, Mink. But we know he is Andrew Cole and signed to bespoke vinyl labels such as: We Play House and Throne of Blood. LYLEY Lyley was a founding member of Underground Solushn, Scotland’s leading record shop in specialist music, where hip-hop and funk were his forte. As well as DJing Lyley also runs a vinyl night at the Hackney Picturehouse called Wax Off! Bring on the beats! MAGNETIC NORTH Their mix of refreshingly honest rhymes and organic beats has since become the duo’s trademark as they went on to rock stages and move hearts at hundreds of venues across the nation. MARCUS WORGULL Easing partygoers with his passion for deep house, his DJing style has been described as ‘venue appropriate’. Wonder if he’s ever been to the Yorkshire Dales before…? MARK WADDELL More at home in a bar than a library, Mark Waddell brings his gloriously twisted poems to the masses. A regular performer at The Torriano, the legendary London

venue known for performances by the likes of Pete Doherty and Noel Fielding, it’s no surprise he will be popping up in the most unlikely places at this year’s Beacons Festival. MARTIN SMITH A mixture of live music and spoken word, exploring the connection between jazz and political resistance in America, Martin Smith is a leading British activist, writer and speaker; his talk is interspersed with performances from exciting jazz musicians. MATT BENTLEY Matt Bentley has carved out a reputation in Leeds as a delicate and intricate performer, while also recording four albums and running his own nights. MAYA JANE COLES MJC has made her name both as a talented DJ and as a producer, with her compositions being a slick mix of late-night funk, polished house and bassline. MAZES Falling on the melodic side of grunge, Mazes churn out brief but tuneful scuzzed up pop and you’d be forgiven for assuming that Mazes had arrived on these shores via the beaches of California rather than the streets of London. MOUNT KIMBIE (pictured) Another stellar addition to the Beacons line-up, Mount Kimbie (London duo Kai Campos and Dominic Maker) are the leaders of the minimal dubstep sound. Last year’s Carbonated EP saw the duo praised for sticking to their guns and not bowing to commercialising their sound. NOPE A group that surpasses the sum of its parts, Nope recently pressed their doubledrumming, proggy, krautrock assault into vinyl discs for the album ‘Revision’ and it’s one of the boldest records we have heard in some time. Go see. Get lost in it. ONEMAN Undeniably one of London’s most important and influential DJs, credited by many as re-inventing old school garage with his high-level DJing skills. ‘I just wanna make people dance and people dance to good beats’, he says. Amen, we say.

OUTFIT Outfit are a romantic blend of Postcard Records pop and synth-laden disco. They’re gentle and melodic, melding futurism and nostalgia at once. This is indie pop at its grandest; sweeping, majestic and refined. PALE SEAS With a neat line in swooning harmonies, Pale Seas emerged from Southampton, though they are imbued with the kind of melodic ingenuity usually distilled in the polar opposite end of the British Isles. PAWS PAWS bash out infectious, lo-fi, garage pop-rock that can quickly shift from cute melancholia to an unnerving territorial roar. On top of the pulsating fuzzy noise the three piece produce, sit dreamy melodies that bare the bones of their author. PATRICK WOLF (ACOUSTIC) Patrick Wolf is one of the world’s born performers and his latest album, ‘Lupercalia’, brings us Wolf at his most resplendent, bold and ambitious. Since the release of the album, Patrick’s live shows have been bombastic and celebratory, like an entire festival condensed into one set. PEARSON SOUND Pearson Sound has been a leading light in bass music of late. The material nods to soulful rave, but with clipped percussion and bassy synths that rattle deep enough to unsettle your core. PINS Listen to Pins and you’ll find layers of reverb and fuzz by the bucketload. Beyond that are Warpaint style harmonies, subdued melodrama and some gutsy substance under all that style. PLANK! Think Battles. Think Errors. Think good Electronic, instrumental, fuzzy rock from Manchester. POST WAR GLAMOUR GIRLS Styled on C86 charm and self-deprecation, their songs pick up where Morrissey left off with the sarcastic self-reflection and melodies.

ROB GALLOWAY Rob Galloway will be opening the show with his brilliant blend of folk and punk. ROOTS MANUVA Roots Manuva has one of the most colourful voices around and the music speaks as bold as he does. With last year’s ‘4everevolution’, Roots Manuva produced his greatest body of work since ‘Run Come Save Me’, shining a light on the dark shadows of modern life. RUNAROUND KIDS Runaround Kids play fast infectious DIY indie pop. Hailing all the way from Wakefield they play our Vice/Noisey stage on Friday. RUNNERS Runners are an analogue-rich dance band. Check out their debut ‘12 ‘Starting Line’ on Dummy Records and bring your dancing shoes. SABRINA PIGGOTT Taking her rich traditional music background Sabrina’s songs are full of a sense of open spaces and possibility. SAM THORNTON Sam never fails to leave audiences stunned with his smoky blues voice and tales of wine, women and song that transport listeners back to the good ol’ days. SANDRANI DUO Sandrani duo is an ensemble fusing together classical Indian Raag and folk song with Western-style grooves and improvisations. SAVAGES (pictured) Unfurling from a fog of mystery and intrigue, Savages came crashing into the world earlier this year. Recalling the likes of ESG, Effi Briest and Joy Division, Savages have embraced the darker sound of life. SEAS-OF-GREEN Seas-of-Green are positively genre schizophrenic, an ever changing, mutating, disbanding, reforming band, priding themselves on their pop hooks and being a little odd.

SECRET SIRENS Describing themselves as ‘Dramatic Pop’ Secret Sirens have an ability to switch from epic to intimate in a heartbeat. SEVEN Join Seven in the Greendales Tent, Saturday afternoon, 2pm, sharp! SOUL CIRCUS Soul Circus will be known by most people who follow the Leeds music scene, having played Leeds Festival, Reading and the Isle of Wight. Their recent single released May 10th was the latest Soul Circus offering of wholesome rock n roll. SOUL JAZZ SOUNDSYSTEM The Soul Jazz Sound System is a DJ collective, they’ve been travelling the world for nearly twenty years, gathering the freshest of sounds as they go. Expect to hear everything from reggae, punk, Latin, disco, dubstep, Brazilian, jungle and more. SPIRIT OF JOHN This folk-punk Americana outfit can cause a raucous outbreak of stomping and hollering just about anywhere. SPLASHH Here in the Beacons office we can’t stop listening to their instant lo-fi classic ‘Need it’. Watch this space - these young lads are gonna blow up. STALKING HORSE Stalking Horse came into being after the breakup of main protagonist, Wu’s, previous band This Et Al in late 2008. Heading to the East Coast of England, recording began in earnest in August 2009 with producer James Kenosha at The Lodge, Bridlington. The result of these sessions was an album entitled ‘Specters’ and the Too Pure single, ‘Heathen Head, Howling Heart’. Stalking Horse makes music to dream to. STAR SLINGER Manchester’s Darren Williams tears the likes of Rihanna, Drake and Mount Kimbie apart and pieces them back together like he’s lost the rulebook. STAY+ This Manchester duo is committed to making soulful, glitchy electro-house and

is easily identified by their rave-tinted cuts and inventive videography. STILL CORNERS Still Corners make atmospheric music that wouldn’t sound out of place on a movie of its own. Tessa barely whispers the lyrics over delicate, but driving tracks, giving them a seriously ethereal air. STUART MCCALLUM Embracing simple, memorable melodies, Stuart creates a sound that is concentrated and distinctive. A new hybrid of composition, production and performance. SUBMOTION ORCHESTRA (pictured) Ruby Wood’s vocals pierce the soundtrack provided by the rest of the Submotion Orchestra gang, as they bridge the gap between modern jazz and dubstep. A fine collective of talented musicians, with their laid-back fusion of funk, hip-hop and soul. SUNLESS ’97 Spiritual brethren of artists like Gang Gang Dance, Young Magic and Grimes, Sunless ’97 mix bold drumbeats with hazy synthesizers and washed out vocals. SWIM DEEP Swim Deep is a four piece band from Birmingham UK. Their music has been described as “Beach grunge”. The band often get mentioned in the same sentence as fellow Birmingham bands Peace and Troumaca who also make slacker beach rock. TALK TO ANGELS Mickey and Craig met at a house party. After discussing a mutual love of certain bands such as Fugazi, Biffy Clyro and Weezer they figured out they should start one. With a new album on the way Talk To Angels are a band on the up. TALL SHIPS Their ranging, spidery songs veer between gentle, layered melody and a raucous knees-up, with bass lines that threaten to shatter the bones of those in attendance at their gigs. Tall Ships weave a rich tapestry of sound that is every bit as emotive as it is cerebral. THAT FUCKING TANK There is a real depth to their brutally

hypnotic math-rock, TFT seem to have proven that their enduring appeal lies in their riffs and not in their trousers. THE ARTISTS The Artists bring a bright new sound to the indie music scene, uniting the texture of captivating melodies, strong lyrics and swaggering riffs to produce a huge sound. THE BLACK SEA Albert Ross (formerly of Albert Ross and the Otters) is back leading a new band of lovers, skeptics, dreamers and hopeless romantics down a ragged path of righteousness and rock and roll. THE FELICE BROTHERS Sitting somewhere between country, folk and rock, The Felice Brothers take the age-old notion of wine, women, whiskey and song, then take it up a notch. Their last album, Celebration, Florida, was a top 5 hit in the US. THE FINNLYS Mixing honest, gritty musicianship with upfront and memorable song writing, this band has developed a hardcore of loyal and devoted fans. THE HOUSEKEEPING SOCIETY The Housekeeping Society are a West Yorkshire-based folk-pop trio whose new album ‘Postcards’ is a song cycle that takes as its central theme the rise and fall of the English seaside. THE HORN AND THE HUNT The Horn and the Hunt are a pop band from Leeds, England, comprising of Clare Carter and Joseph Osborne. On stage they are joined by Conor Lawrence on the drums and Alice Miller on guitar. Characterised by powerful female vocals with rock and electronic influences, The Horn and the Hunt consider themselves largely unfaithful to any specific musical style or genre, settling with the term ‘pop’ to describe their desire to connect with people through storytelling. THE MAGNETIC NORTH The result of their album ‘Orkney: Symphony of the Magnetic North’ is an accomplished blend of folk music and classical compositions that slays with its beauty.

THE WAVE PICTURES They’re the kind of band for whom the words ‘quintessential’ and ‘British’ are well married, with songs that are gawky and awkward, witty and fun. They have song titles like ‘We Dress Up Like Showmen’ and ‘Stay Here And Look After The Chickens’. THE WONDERFUL SOUND OF THE CINEMA ORGAN With an all-live setup comprising string, vocal, horn and rhythm sections, The Wonderful Sound of the Cinema Organ presents a unique sonic and visual experience, bringing the nostalgic warmth of vintage jazz up to date with a captivating presentation and a highly danceable contemporary edge. THEME PARK Masters of a percussive groove and a satisfying guitar hook, Theme Park always know when to run with it as they roll from enjoyable verses to delicious choruses. For fans of Metronomy, Friendly Fires and Maccabees. THIS AINT VEGAS After splitting a few years ago This Ain’t Vegas reunited in April for a low-key gig in Leeds. Who knows how long they’ll be with us; enjoy the resurrection of these Sunderland-dwelling post-punk anthem makers. THOMAS TRUAX Straight outta Wowtown via New York City, armed with an array of bizarre homemade instruments, Truax gives captivating live performances, crafting some very potent songs, evocative and rich with melancholy. TOOTS & THE MAYTALS (pictured) Sunday headliners Toots and the Maytals are legends in the world of roots music. Their influence is cast far and wide, beyond the immediate world of reggae and ska, through to modern songwriters like the late Amy Winehouse. Not to be missed. TIBETAN YOUTH Tibetan Youth are a dynamic duo who mix ambient soundscapes and dreamy melodies, backed by organic yet electronic influenced beats. This blend, created from looping guitars, MPC triggered samples and mellifluous baritone vocals, morphs into a sonic form of its own, gracefully

twisting into the consciousness of its listeners. VERONICA FALLS Veronica Falls are a must see for fans of the C86 sound. Presenting a heady mix of the Velvet Underground and Warpaint, these Londoners create harmonies to die for. Please check the pulse of anyone not seen weeping slightly if they play ‘Teenage.’ VISIONS OF TREES Joni was winging it when he booked the first Visions of Trees gig. He knew the vocals were going to be a key element but he didn’t meet Sara until two days before. Thankfully, the chemistry balanced and the resulting sound is something like Sarah Cracknell fronting for The Weekend. WACHS LYRICAL Wachs Lyrical is a producer and DJ of underground dance music. He also composes bespoke music for adverts, corporate videos, television and films. Wachs Lyrical has received DJ support from N-Type, Kissy Sell Out, Goth-Trad, MRK1 and many others. WEIRD DREAMS Believe the hype! This band have practically ripped J. Mascis’ melodic tendencies from his throat and drenched them in surf-pop harmony, stolen the jangle from every 80s indie band that ever existed and created their own blissed-out, reverb-heavy wonderland. WILD BEASTS (pictured) Wild Beasts possess a sound that has grown ever richer since their 2006 debut and is now augmented by the addition of Katie Harkin (Sky Larkin) on keys and backing vocals. Wild beasts will be bringing their operatic grandeur to the wilds of the Yorkshire Dales with the headline slot for Beacons on the Saturday night.

WILLIS EARL Willis Earl Beal is one of life’s born performers and his live shows are characterised by a serious intensity and unpredictability. You never know quite what he’s going to do; though you can be fairly certain that it will involve copious amounts of whiskey and some of the most impassioned, rawest a cappella / lo-fi folk that you are likely to hear. He’s become known for the time that he dedicates to his fans and even publicly dished out his phone number for people to give him a call so he could sing them a song. WILLY MASON Presenting Folk at its finest, Mason is one of life’s troubadours and with his gentle, gruff voice sings tales of dustbowl heartache, played out slow, strings howling in the distance, the crackle of campfires and old vinyl jostling to be heard. The passion and frustration of human relations cuts through the guitar lines until it’s palpable, like the sting of a fresh wound. WOT GORILLA Masters of math rock they write songs like creeping vines, with Mat Haigh’s taut vocals clambering up the twisted guitar lines. XXXY One of Manchester’s finest label-hopping, genre-chopping producers XXXY has developed an aggressive, accomplished and atmospheric sound for himself. A combination of teen influences and a skill that he’s honed over the years has resulted in a sound that layers tech-house sounds over drum & bass rhythms.

Costume interpretation is entirely up to you, but make sure you pick something suitably bedazzling. Limited time? Site Etiquette: Leave No Trace John Howard, the farmer who kindly lets us use this beautiful site handed it over to us in pristine condition. Part of this year’s mission is to preserve the land during the event and return it to Mr Howard in the same state as he handed it to us. We are doing this in several ways this year and most involve your help. 1)

When you arrive at the box office you will be issued with a black bin bag, please use this to clear around your camping area when you leave. If everyone fills a bag this will go a long way towards leaving the site clean.

2)

When travelling around the festival site, PLEASE use the bins provided. Attached to the bins you will see some cigarette bins, these are massively important as these fields are often the home to cows and sheep. Farm animals are most likely to die on a green field site used for an event space after the ingestion of cigarette filters. THEY DO NOT BIO DEGRADE they are made from nylon and are very harmful to livestock.

3)

Please under no circumstances leave any tents on the site, unfortunately this is fast becoming a trend at festivals and we don’t want it to be one at Beacons. Obviously the cheapness of tents and camping equipment sold by the nations big chain stores make these items somewhat of a throwaway item for some people, but please respect the festival, its staff and the landowner by not doing this.

4)

We have a team of expert cleaners and litter pickers to help us keep the site clean before, during and after the event. Please respect them and help them in their job by following our requests.

5)

We aim to recycle as much of the waste the festival produces as possible. This is done off site by state of the art machinery. Keep an eye out on the Beacons website after the event where we will inform you what percentage of rubbish was recycled.

6)

Common sense: on a safety note, if you see anyone doing anything particularly silly like bringing a lit disposable barbeque into a tent to stay warm, please stop them! There have been a number of incidents this year: just don’t go there!

Many thanks for your cooperation. The Beacons Team & John Howard
