Dear Beagle Editor, What future for the so-called “Nature Coast’’?
Will it be a re rement village inhabited by ci zens who come here to escape the turmoil and crowding of the ci es and wish to live in harmony with nature? Perhaps “Suburbia by the Sea” with families, affordable housing, schools, hospitals, houses, parks, schools and shops. It could become a playground of the rich, with expensive restaurants, and grand holiday homes. Maybe a tourist des na on with ar ficial natural a rac ons enhanced by entertainment venues and souvenir shops. Or will it become a combina on of all things that results in the largely undeveloped region of the Dalmeny/Narooma region becoming another “Gold Coast” from which the conserva onists and small village lovers wish to escape? All this can be made possible by a local council which has responsibility for far more than roads, rates, bridges and taxes, and which has already made the decision to bulldoze large areas of bushland for housing development. Times have changed and our unique flora and fauna are at risk. Will the new council to be elected on the 4th December give more considera on to the natural world on which we all ul mately depend, and protect areas of natural bush that provide vital animal habitat and are good for the soul. Elect councillors who will protect our natural environment and SAVE THE TREES. Susan Cru enden

Norfolk Island Pine It was our first Christmas tree Measuring up to my knee I planted it long ago, Never expec ng it to grow To such a spectacular height, Guarding other trees from sight. Birds jump from branch to branch Chasing each other for a chance To find shelter and some bugs Among the leaves and be snug. Summer comes and leaves turn brown Dropping them to the ground But my Norfolk con nues to grow Standing steadfast, as winds blow. A boy climbs up with Christmas lights Every December, ligh ng the night With Christmas spirit to bring some smiles To family and neighbours for a while... And a er that it remains evergreen Ready to bring cheer, for yet, another year! By Mary Murray

Using the papermaking process, Mandy's work reflects a collec ve, personal or historical narra ve of a specific face. She harvests the plants from that place, then cuts, cooks, and some mes dyes the fibre, and then makes a pulp. South Coast Pastel Society ar sts meet the challenge to produce a Vol 16 September 15th 2017 Vol 28 December 7th, 2017 Vol 48 April 27th 2018 work based on the theme “Spring” By Alex Gower The members of South Coast Pastel Society have been busy throughout Spring. COVID lockdowns meant that the Society’s Spring exhibi on had to be cancelled. That wasn’t going to stop this group of keen ar sts from ge ng on with the ac vity they love – pain ng with pastels. The commi ee set a theme of “spring” and challenged members to create and submit their work based on this theme.

There were no limita ons. The ar st was encouraged to choose their own subject and style. The only guidance was “be crea ve”. Well, as you can see from the examples here, the challenge was met and exceeded. Some of these works may be on display at the society’s summer exhibi on en tled “An Explora on in Mixed Media and Pastels” to be held from 21 to 30 January 2022 at the Batemans Bay Surf Club, George Bass Drive, Malua Bay.
