LETTERS to Boomer
Hey, Boomer!
I think it is important that we continune to explore space because we should know what is in space.
Sincerely, K.E. Boomer Bear, do t thi it s i o t t fo s to keep sending humans into space because we have more advanced technology.
Your friend, A.B. I appreciate your thoughts, K.E. & A.B.! With NASA’s new Artemis missions, plans are to return a crew of astronauts to the moon by 2025. And this may be an important step for stepping onto Mars! But space travel is risky, requiring a ton of teamwork, science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). And it is imagination and STEM that enable us to look and go much deeper into space with unmanned spacecraft.
Your space fan, Boomer Bear

Your friend, B.E.
Happy Valentine’s Day to you and all my other friends & Young Reporters, B.E.! Thank you for your interesting stories. So much is happening this time of year, from the Super Bowl in Glendale to the Tucson Festival of Books with hundreds of authors, kid activities and tens of thousands of books! And for those who love building things and doing experiments, the Arizona SciTech Festival has events across the state slated for the next few months. Check out its Pullout Guide in this issue.
You rock! Boomer Bear e Boomer, h t s o f o ite oo
Your friend, F.F.
Good question, F.F.
Three authors who have won the biggest award for American youth literature, the Newbery Medal, are coming to town for the Festival of Books, March 4 & 5. Katherine Applegate for “The One & Only Ivan,” Donna Barba Higuera for “The Last Cuentista” and two-time winner Lois Lowry for “Number the Stars” and “The Giver.”
I recommend any of these remarkable
stories. My favorite book is almost always the one I’m currently reading. You can also ask your school librarian or children’s librarian at your neighborhood library what books you might start calling your favorites.
Readers are winners! Boomer Bear
Hi, Boomer! The things I love most about your newspaper are the f d e ti it

That’s so good to hear. We try to make Bear Essential News fun and informative for young readers like you. Not only do we bring you news that kids can use, there are all sorts of activities like the Seek-nFind on the front cover, contests and word games. Thanks for the encouraging words.
Enjoy! Boomer Bear Boomer Bear, e t to the i i d e Museum.
Your Young Reporter, L.B.
You did GREAT, L.B.!
Interviewing World War II veteran Walter Ram must have felt like such an honor. Since you’re a big aviation and space exploration fan, I bet you enjoyed the fact that Ram was part of a B-17 crew for the Army Air Corps. If kids want to read about this American hero, go to BearEssentialNews.com and search for Walter Ram in the upper right of my home page.
Kids can write for Bear!
Love, Boomer
Hi, Boomer, e of f il s f o ite l es to o is the hild e s se because there are so many activities! Your friend, P.H. e oo e e f il e o s the i o o o ese t se t s e t because you get to see desert animals.
Bye, A.W.
Great Museums, P.H. & A.W.!
Not only does the Children’s Museum have its fun-filled facilities Downtown, it just moved its awesome Oro Valley museum to Tohono Chul at 7366 N. Paseo del Norte. The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is one of the top zoos in the country. If you want to learn all about desert wildlife and our desert’s very special biomes (living spaces for animals) you’ll love spending a day there.
These are excellent places for STEM learning, and the Children’s Museum Tucson (Downtown) has its free, hands-on Family Sci-Fest on Saturday, Feb. 18. It’s part of the Arizona SciTech Festival, which includes tons of events statewide now through April. Visit scitechinstitute.org/2023-festival.

CSO Works to Spread STEM Awareness
by CSO Chiara Scornavacca, ASPIRE Academyello e de s hief ie e ffi e hi f o ASPIRE Academy at Connolly Middle School in Tempe. As a CSO, I have been able to spread STEM awareness throughout the community and inspire an interest in STEM possibilities.
I joined CSO when I was in seventh grade. It was a fantastic opportunity to explore and connect with others who have similar i te ests d o i fields of fi st e e ted Codes & Ciphers with my team for all learning levels.
This was presented at events such as Geeks Night Out and Southwest Maker Fest. We also presented the codes at my school for grades 6–8 and to our disabled, general education, and honors students. I joined the CSO Arizona Leadership Council, East Valley STEM Alliance, and DEI in STEM (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in STEM) Working Group.
As ambassadors of STEM, CSOs create action plans, which are projects that the CSOs create to spread awareness of STEM in their community, whether it be at their school, a public event or throughout the state. My action plan for this year is to present odes i he s to fifth de s th o ho t the e e ist i t and to present at elementary schools along with the team of
CSOs from ASPIRE.
Part of my action plan to spread STEM awareness has been done with an electronics display for our disabled students at Connolly Middle School. My team and I collaborated with the electronics students to create an interactive showcase to include ll o st de ts s it is i o t t to i e e e o e o o t i ty in STEM no matter what.
CSO is a program for students in grades 6–12, giving them many ways to make a difference in their lives and others. This program has given me many resources and opportunities to make dreams come true. CSOs do not just hope it happens— we make it happen!
