FRIENDLY GARBAGE PROJECT WARSAW, 2013-2015

Friendly Garbage Project Our objective is to have our students and teachers acquire a better knowledge of the European habits concerning recycling .

Our school Our school is located in Warsaw. Our district Bemowo is located in the west part of the city. Our school is not far away from the city center (9 km) and really close to the Kampinos National Park, which covers 407 square kilometres and was added to the UNESCO's list of biosphere reserves. Students in our school learn some school subjects in Polish and French. They not only have 8 French lessons every week. They also learn about culture, literature and geography of France. Each year they go for an educational trip to Paris, take part in French Theatre festivals, make movies in French. There are classes with 6 hours of English lessons per week. Students take part in a lot of projects. Organize Saint Patrick's Day, Egg Hunt, Christmas Parties, prepare presentations about Anglo-Saxon countries. We also have English Theatre Festival during which young actors from Warsaw schools compete on the stage performing in their English plays.

We want to make them build up a garden from a compost and recycled items from the canteen, develop their sense of responsibilities, their capacity in communicating in a common foreign language and use ICT through our twinspace. We expect them to feel European citizens. First the students have investigated at the school canteen (the waste origins, quantity). We have also made a mascot symbolizing their school garbage. Then students visited waste centres, interviewed people from local authorities. We started a comic strip, with our Mascot as a hero. Then, the students will lead an action plan in the school to reduce wastes. We have made commercials, showing what is done within the project. Each school will have to create a compost. Students will work on famous gardens in Europe and prepare a display. Then, they will have to imagine their own garden and build it inside the school, using their compost and recycled items.

Our school and Ireland Our school is connected with Ireland because Constance Markiewicz is our patron and she was born in Ireland. At the begining we want to tell you how we celebrate Irish holidays in our school. First holiday is St.Patrick’s Day. On this day all of the students wear green clothes, we organise quizes, competitions and games for example “ Find the pot of gold”. Another event is Constance Markiewicz Day. During this day many interesting people visit our school for example Patrick Quigley, an author of the book “Story of Constance Markiewicz”. In February as the next part of the Comenius project “Friendly Garbage” we are going to visit students in Ireland. We can’t wait to see Ireland and meet students from another countries.
