MORADIA A, QUELUZ

SCHEMATIC DESIGN AND RENOVATION SINGLE FAMILY HOUSE This project is about the refurbishment of a two-storey house in Queluz, on the outskirts of Lisbon. The residential building was heavily damaged and showed an obsolete subdivision of the spaces, not suitable to the new owners, which asked for a completely different layout of the interior an the exterior areas. The ground floor is composed by an entrance, a small bathroom for guests and an open space living and dining, facing both the entrance and the rear garden. on the first floor, a private bathroom has been added to a completely renovated master bedroom, consisting of two smaller ones in the existing version. the room opens to the south-east facing terrace. a smaller bedroom, a studio and a second bathroom complete the rest of the floor. All the spaces have been designed in order to be flexible and to give as much space as possible to storages and closets, due to the reduced areas of the house. The materials are inspired by the Portuguese traditional architecture, with the aim of recreating a minimal but cozy atmosphere. The external spaces have also been modified and rearranged according to the needs of the clients.

MARCO POLO, CYPRUS

ARCHITECTURE / CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION INTERIOR / DESIGN DEVELOPMENT WATERFRONT APARTMENT BUILDING With a privileged position directly facing the water, this eleven storey bulding in limassol, cyprus, is designed on the concept of maximising the views and the dedicated verandas. Constituted by twins 2 and 3 bedroom apartments and a twin penthouse on the top, the complex is mainly dedicated to holiday retreats. The ground floor offers to the occupants and their guests an iterior pool, a gym, a bar and a reception, beside the back garden and the main exterior pool, directly extending out to the beach. It is here represented an example of a 3 bedroom apartment from the interior design development phase. DRAWINGS: © 2020 UHA LONDON RENDERING: © 2020 JULIA ROMANOVA

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

DO CASTELO

OPEN AIR TIMBER AMPHITHEATRE

DE SÃO JORGE

This project is the missing part of an intervention that it’s already been built: the archeological museum of the praça nova do castelo de são jorge (2010). In spatial continuity with the archaeological site, this area, previously occupied with a parking, remains intact and full of potential. Because of its position, right on top of the hill, the amphitheatre, with his light and removable timber structure integrated with the existing maritime pine trees, is offering the spectators more than a simple view on the stage: on one side, the defensive walls and the castle, and on the other, a privileged view on the open air museum and the natural spectacle of the river Tejo. CAMPO DAS CEBOLAS

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION PUBLIC SQUARE AND UNDERGROUND PARKING, LISBON After the competition for the public parking is won (2010), during the excavation process, a lot of archaeological stones from the previous ancient dock are found. The idea is to reintegrate them in the drawing of the new pavement above the underground parking: a concrete slab is the element in which a mix of new and archaeological stones are immersed. TRAVESSA DA MEMÓRIA

CONSTRUCTION PERMIT / DOCUMENTATION APARTMENT BUILDING The challenge of this new construction building is to fit 4 apartments - one for each floor - in a quite modest and triangular site, respecting the even more restricted codes of construction typical of an historical area. Despite these difficulties, every apartment benefits a rational organization of the interior space, a vast amount of light and a useful patio or terrace.

CONSERVATOIRE DE PALAISEAU

INVITED COMPETITION, 3RD PLACE MUSIC, DANCE AND DRAMATIC ARTS CONSERVATORY The proposed solution maintains the existing buildings of the old conservatory, preserving their volume and historical importance in palaiseau. The process of excavating the ground allows to satisfy the requested area, and all the spaces are facing the generous patio below the street level. The stage of the main auditorium can also be used open to the exterior courtyard, giving a special twist to the project and emphasizing the importance of the new protected patio.

MUSEU DA RESISTÊNCIA E DA LIBERDADE

PUBLIC COMPETITION MUSEUM, PENICHE FORTRESS The proposed solution can be considered as a statement or manifesto: it underlines the fact that the whole building itself has to be seen as a memorial of the political prisoners of the Portuguese resistance, and not only has to host some exhibitions about the fascist era. The intervention is focused on two simple but neat processes: on one hand, the three buildings once being the political prison are all painted in black; on the other, part of their structure is literally cut out, like in a Gordon Matta-Clark’s work of art, making these black monoliths, once shut and guarded, now freely crossable. To underline its monumental character, the official list with the names of the prisoners is graven all along the exterior black walls.

CITÉ DE LA MUSIQUE DE GENÈVE

INVITED COMPETITION, 2ND PLACE THE MUSICBOX A light, simple volume of white glass is elevated on a dark basement. Due to the reflecting glass, during the day, the building is almost fading away; on the other way around, it stands out and night, underlining its presence in the new cultural scenario of the city. The main pedestrian access from Place des Nations extends itself inside the building, opening into a huge foyer, directly linked to the timber made and enveloping grande salle. The rational organization of the interior spaces and functions, with the help of a central patio, lets the natural light all over inside the volume.

CARRILHO

ITINERANT EXHIBITION

DA GRAÇA:

MUSEU DA CASA BRASILEIRA, SÃO PAULO

LISBOA

This is not an exhibition about João Luís Carrilho da Graça or his work: despite its anthological nature, the exhibition is, above all, a manifestation of a way of looking that Carrilho da Graça exemplified, something that has been present since the start of his career. This gaze is illustrated here using the city of Lisbon, with which he has worked for over 30 years. The materials presented in this retrospective enable us to draw closer to a theory of territory, expressed in a ground plan and model of Lisbon, and reiterated by the models of the individual projects. The proposal that architectural design ultimately depends on territorial analysis underpins the whole Carrilho da Graça’s oeuvre, and architecture becomes what might best be described as a territorial vocation. The selection of works presented in this exhibition thus corresponds to a catalogue raisonné of the works of Carrilho da Graça for the city of Lisbon – not a complete and definitive compilation, but rather those projects considered to be significant in this context.

STADIUM BRIDGING A RIVER

DIPLOMA GRAFTON ARCHITECTS “Stadium” is the assigned topic for the Diploma semester; after some reseaching, it comes out that Aarau is the only city in Switzerland hosting an important football club without having a proper stadium. Focusing on this country’s natural landscape and territorial marks, it was clear how rivers have a great impact in its urbanization. The flowing of water and the flowing of people going to a match, brought me to start thinking about a stadium bridging a river - the Aare. This way, the stadium itself becomes an opportunity of condensation and an infrastructure that can connect different parts of the territory, even when the match is not on. The project is conceived as a hollow structure, as the already existing metallic bridges spread all over the Swiss landscape, where four huge arches constitute the main entrances leading the spectators to the heart of the stadium and to their seatings, always allowing a view and a direct relationship with the river and its noise and the forestry landscape all around. Most of the people are reaching the stadium walking, or by buses coming from the railway station, in order to implement the ritual of going to a match, crossing the city and the parks, and in order to avoid the heavy private traffic produced by cars.

WOMEN

MAS I

CENTRE

FRANCIS KÉRÉ Burkina Faso: the key concept is to think about a different way of making architecture, without renouncing to the benefits that a building always has to offer to the occupants. In this case, the project is brought up for the local women, which, because of various cultural reasons, represent the active working strength of the country. To give shelter from the hard climate conditions, to grant people a comfortable place for working and selling their own products, to experiment with a new kind of constructive details are some of the goals of the semester. Rammed earth, easy to find, and straight concrete beams, easy to build, constitute the main structure, protected by a ventilated corrugated iron roof, underneath which life can happen, even in this climatically extreme scenario.
