PROFILE
PROFILE_Beatriz S. Couto
I was born in Ponta Delgada in June 1990. I enrolled in Azores University in 2008 and finished the master´s degree in ISCTE-IUL in 2015. I attended the area of visual arts in high school. On 2012 i went abroad for Erasmus in Germany. It was a great experience, i uppercase, study and started to learn a new language. Meanwhile I’ve found myself being curious about the digital world and what I could do when joining architecture with technology. I also dedicate my free time to learn new programs and their applicability to architecture. That’s why I’ve started to learn about video mapping through workshops and doing some volunteer work for OCUBO in exhibitions of this sort.

FINAL PROJECT_08
01 Final Architectural Project and Thesis, un-
der the theme “Borealis sound: interactive wall to EMCN, Escola de Música do Conservatório Nacional” LISBON, BAIRRO ALTO 2014-2015
The final exercise involved the expansion and rehabilitation of an existing building, EMCN, music conservatory. Actually considered one of the best institutions dedicated to music education in Portugal and a reference school in Lisbon.
Final Project
All west buildings and studios were demolished in order to support the new spatial composition that is based on three fundamental aspects: -Reclassify the existing west wall, now including school public program along the street. Accesses are made directly from the street to allow independent operation of the school. These spaces such as the hall, concert coffee and library are also relate in the inside. -Allow the city enter directly in the school patio, this means that community people can access the library. -The criteria for its configuration and location was to raise up the private spaces of the school for example: practical classes. Those rooms represent the extension that clings to the existing building. As the building overcomes the lower level the west side contain mostly school public program.

Expansion of the Art Academy_20
Site Plan The area of intervention found in DĂźsseldorf between two pre-existing buildings. The proposal works as an expansion of the Arts Academy Kusntakademie, located on the same street. It is possible to sight the Oberkasseler bridge to the north and south to Rheinknie bridge and the emblematic Rhine Tower. Flurstudenten
Flurstudenten is the term given to the students who stayed one more year at the Academy of Arts improving their techniques before attending university.
Project
The exercise process began with three different approaches to the site. The base principles were: respect both pre-existing buildings, taking advantage of the view, benefit the natural light from the north and grow the building in height. Because of functionality issues towards the Kunstakademie, the main access is through Eiskeller street, this access automatically leads people to a vertical access that visually enjoys the back garden. At the entrance floor is the public program and the upper floors are for the painting and sculpture classes.

Master´s Thesis_46
05 Master´s Thesis: Borealis Sound: an Interactive wall Intervention for the National Conservatory of Music in Lisbon Lisbon, Portugal 2015
My Master’s Thesis was developed around the following problematic present on the External Evaluation Report of Schools (2011) - developed by the Ministry of Education -Z one of the weaknesses identified was the lack of a space where students could interact with each other.
Objectives and Methodology 1- Typify and characterize interactive multimedia surfaces used in architecture; 2- Set a methodology for the practical implementation of an interactive media wall proposal, based on existing methodologies; 3- Define and test an interactive installation for a renewal architectural design of a music school;

Step 1: Definition of initial conditions I. Initial conditions of the proposal compared to the overall design of the interactive system proposed. II. Criteria based on sound properties: amplitude and frequency. III. Concept of the proposed visual content. Step 2: Context analysis (scenarios, criteria and visual content) Step 3: System Specification - requirements Step 4: Usability testing - prototype for proof of concept Participants: 15 students from ISCTE architecture; 5 students of the Conservatory of Music; Step 5: Analysis of results Qualitative evaluation Quantitative evaluation • Understanding the transformation of the visual content; • Message Understanding the visual content for each scenario; • Relationship between the visual content and the sound properties; • intuition level of interactive experience; Model of the prototype
Composition scheme of screens
The aim was to control the volume of the sound in a place where silence and sound clarity is needed and noise reduction during the classes is mandatory. The proposal aims to explore the incorporation of digital multimedia surfaces enhancing new dynamics while users walk in the interior of the building. Visual content would be triggered and changed by the interaction with the sounds produce by people, devices and instruments. The performance criteria of the visual effects is defined regarding the amplitude and frequency of the sound. When the sound produced in the corridor exceeds a preset limit (85 dB, equivalent to a human scream) an alert message would be transmitted (visually and not accustically). This criteria was chosen in order to provide users with a sensory experience that entangles them with the combination of both sound and visual effects.
