THE NEWS OF TOMORROW ‘He Drew First’: Satire, hate speech, attacks It didn’t take long for critics to come after Charlie Hebdo for its being racist and inflammatory. After the rise of solidarity and the encapsulated by “Je suis Charlie”, we soon had “Je ne suis pas” Charlie Hebdo fight, when it goes too quick for a rush hard change by Sophia McClennen The question is whether or not Charlie Hebdo participated in hate speech/images by demonizing Islam. But there are two flaws to this line of thinking. We need to understand the cartoons in context--not just of the satire in general but of hate speech. In a piece I wrote shortly after the Paris attacks on Charlie Hebdo, I cautioned that it wouldn’t be long before critics came after the dead satirists. And I was right. Charlie Hebdo has been condemned for being racist, for not being good satire, for being inflammatory, for participating in French Islamophobia. Maybe even for contributing to the actual context of violence that caused a number of them to die. After the rise of solidarity encapsulated “Je suis Charlie” we had “Je ne suis pas Charlie.” The question is whether or not Charlie Hebdo participated in hate speech/images by demonizing Islam. The satirists themselves would certainly welcome this public debate. That’s what satire is all about: starting a conversation, questioning the status quo, and shaking things up so that we engage in controversial issues. Discussion of the cartoons is needed in the context of a French culture that has a complicated relationship to the Muslim community lives there. But to categorically dismiss the cartoons is to not understand them in context. For instance Arthur Chu writes in the Daily Beast that “Charlie Hebdo is also a crap publication and people need to stop celebrating it and making martyrs out of its staff.” R. Seymour concludes:

I think there’s a critical difference between solidarity with the journalists who were attacked, refusing to concede anything to the idea that journalists are somehow ‘legitimate targets,’ and solidarity with what is frankly a racist publication.” First, accusations don’t look at the complexity of Charlie Hebdo’s satire. They ignore any irony, nuance, or layered humor. While it may be true that some Charlie Hebdo cartoons seemed racist, it is wrong to dismiss the sum total of their work and to neglect the specific ways that they used satire productively and critically. None of the critics making negative comments, for instance, can account for thecover cartoonthey used after their offices were firebombed showing a man in Muslim garb embracing a man wearing a Charlie T-shirt, captioned like such as “L’Amour plus fort que la haine” , yes!

And certainly none have chosen to analyze their first post-massacre cover that depicts the Prophet Muhammad holding a “Je Suis Charlie” sign under a banner: “Tout est pardonné” . At the very least one has to admit that there is significant irony and grace in both of these responses. Those that dismiss the cartoons tend to dismiss the art of their satire. If they acknowledge the use of satire, irony, and puns in them at all it is only to suggest that their satire is too aggressive, too extreme, or too much mockery and not enough productive critique. In addition, some of what seem to be the most inflammatory cartoons have a complex context. For instance, “Muhammad: A Star is Born” depicting the Prophet Muhammad naked, bent over, with a star partially Charlie Hebdo out yes covering his buttocks was in response to the film “The Innocence of Muslims.

Mr. Trump is all but certain to roll into the Republican convention in July with the party establishment’s official but uneasy embrace. In the Democratic contest, Senator Bernie Sanders rebounded from a string of defeats to prevail in Indiana over Hillary Clinton, who largely abandoned the state after polls showed her faring poorly with the predominantly white electorate. But

the outcome was not expected to significantly change Clinton’s sizable lead in delegates needed to win the Democratic nomination. Mr. Trump’s victory was an extraordinary moment in American political history: He is now on course to be the first standard-bearer of a party or more. First question is: what is driving the story in Brazil, corruption or the media? Plus, there is a huge issue with how messaging apps are reshaping how news are shared. Audiences around the world have seen the images from the Brazilian streets - millions of demonstrators, for and against the president, in dozens of cities, in the biggest political protests in the country’s history. But is the story really about corruption, and the process of money laundering of those involved in the Petrobras scandal, because if it is - then how is the main opposition party, many of whose own members have been implicated, in a position to impeach President Dilma Rousseff? Or is this the story of a political power struggle? PANAMÁ PAPERS: How do Spanish offshore crookers respond? Panama ranks sixteenth on the list of countries where the Spaniards prefer to keep their assets, so individuals who failed to declare their offshore aacounts or companies could face hefty fines behind the Spanish Hacienda

An anonymous source handed the documents to the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, which shared it with the ICIJ, an umbrella group for 107 news organizations from 78 countries, among them there were the Spanish media ElConfidetial.com, LaSexta TV and eldiario.es, who have publisehd the information in Spain.

LAURA CARDOSO. Madrid

he Panama Papers are an unprecedented leak of 11.5m files from the database of the world’s fourth biggest offshore law firm, Mossack Fonseca. The records were obtained from an anonymous source by the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, which shared them with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). The ICIJ shared them with a large network of international partners, included LaSexta and ElConfidencial.

The Spanish revelations

What they reveal?

The documents show the myriad ways in which the rich can exploit secretive offshore tax regimes. Twelve national leaders are among 143 politicians, their families and close associates from around the world known to have been using offshore tax havens. A $2bn trail leads all the way to Vladimir Putin. The Russian president’s best friend – a new cellist called Sergei Roldugin – is at the centre of a scheme in which the money from some Russian state banks is hidden offshore. Some of it ends in a ski resort where in 2013 Putin’s daughter Katerina got married. An offshore investment fund run by the father of British prime minister David Cameron avoided ever having to pay tax in Britain by hiring a small army of Bahamas residents to sign its paperwork. The fund has been registered with HM Revenue and Customs since its inception and has filed detailed tax returns every year.

Why Spain not?

Mossack Fonseca is a law firm based mainly in Panamá, whose services include incorporating companies in offshore jurisdictions. It administers offshore firms for a yearly fee, even thought other services include wealth management. The firm is Panamanian but runs a worldwide operation. Its website boasts of a global network with 600 people working in 42 countries. It has franchises around the world, where separately owned affiliates sign up new customers and have exclusive rights to use its brand. It operates in tax havens including Switzerland, Cyprus and the dependencies of the British Crown such the ultraocean like

the British Virgin Islands. It is the world’s fourth biggest provider of offshore services. It has acted for more than 300 hundred companies. There is a strong UK connection. More than half of the companies are registered in British-administered tax havens, as well as in the United Kingdom in itslef. In a speech last year in Singapore, Cameron said “the corrupt, criminals and launderers”

There will always be some illicit moving of funds around” - stated Barack Obama take advantage of anonymous company structures. Current government is trying to do something about this. It wants to set up a central register that will reveal the beneficial owners.

Offshore are crookers

From June, Spanish companies will have to reveal their “significant” owners for the first time. Frims won’t discuss specific cases of alleged wrongdoing. But it

A lot. The leak is one of the biggest ever – larger than the US diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks in 2010, and the secret intelligence documents given to journalists by Edward Snowden in 2013. There are 11.5m documents and 2.6 terabytes of information drawn from Mossack Fonseca’s internal database. Among national leaders with offshore wealth are Pakistan’s PM, ex-interim PM of Iraq and PM of Iceland.

does robustly defend its conduct. Mossack Fonseca says it complies with anti-money-laundering laws and carries out thorough due diligence on all its clients. It says it regrets any misuse of its services and tries actively to prevent it. The firm says it cannot be blamed for failings by intermediaries, who include banks, law firms and accountants. The law firm acted for an Iranian oil company that had been blacklisted by the US, the documents reveal. Though the source of the leak is not known to El Confidencial, there can be no doubt as to the files’ authenticity. Some of the offshore industry may say were are good reasons for sheltering assets in tax havens. Big corporations often argue they have a duty to their shareholders to pay as little tax as is legal. But they are literally swimming against the tide. The Russian president’s best friend is at the centre of a scheme in which the money from some Russian hidden offshore. married. The known research group Global Financial Integrity puts the figure for illicit financial outflows from developing countries at $1tn a year and growing. No wonder then that some world leaders are now taking a stand. In June 2013, at the G8 summit in Northern Ireland, Britain’s prime minister, David Cameron, and world leaders, including the President of United States, Mister Barack Obama, signed up to the plan. In May, the United kingdom is planning to host an anti-corruption summit. Offshore tax havens are to be discussed – and after the Panama Papers disclosures they are likely to be top of the agenda.

On the list are the filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar and his brother Agustín, both of whom told the TV station La Sexta that they have already regularized their tax situation. Pilar de Borbón, sister to former Spanish King Juan Carlos, also showed up among the clients of Mossack Fonseca. Moreover, it appears ministers like José Manuel Soria or even the President of the former Spanish bank, Bankia, so called Rodrigo Rato. Pilar de Borbón, sister to former Spanish King Juan Carlos, also showed up among the clients of Mossack Fonseca. The Almodóvars borthers had power-of-attorney to handle the affairs of Glen Valley Corporation, a firm incorporated in the Virgin Islands and active between March 1991 and November 1994. Both men have denied any direct or indirect participation in an offshore company. Pilar de Borbón, aunt to Spanish King Felipe VI, had been director and president of the Panama-based Delantera Financiera SA since August 1974, a month before thenCrown Prince Juan Carlos took over as interim head of state in Spain due to the dictator Francisco Franco’s poor health. The company was dissolved only five days after Felipe VI’s coronation in June 2014. Concrete case, Popular Party spokesman Pablo Casado supported Mr. Soria in statements made after the revelation. “The most important thing is that he refutes it”, said Mr. Casado: “that he says he has no responsibility and that he is also ready to offer all the information that is asked for”. The Spanish Socialist Party called on Mr. Soria to resign and for an inquiry into the tax amnesty approved by the Popular Party. Spokesman Antonio Hernando said the PSOE wanted to know “if there are more members of the government with offshore companies to evade taxes”. Previosuly, PSOE: “Minister has to resign and leave the government”.

Industry Minister J. M. Soria resigns over Panama Papers

LAURA CARDOSO. Madrid The Spanish minister of industry, energy and tourism resigned Friday morning after documents in the Panama Papers linked him to offshore investments in the Bahamas, and news reports then connected him to a company in the tax haven of Jersey. José Manuel Soria is among the most high-profile figures to suffer politically since the release of the leaked papers, which identify companies and people suspected of using offshore bank accounts. The resignation of Mr. Soria, who has not been charged with wrongdoing, comes at a time of turmoil in Spanish politics. Spain’s acting industry minister, Soria, on Friday announced he was stepping down over his involvement in offshore companies.

Refuse responsibility

The move comes at the end of a week when his name was linked to the Panama Papers, a trove of 11.5 million internal documents from a Panama-based law firm that was leaked to the media. The politician also gave up his positions as congressional deputy and president of the Popular Party (PP) in the Canary Islands, his home region. After initially denying allegations of his involvement in a Bahamas firm and a mirror company in Britain, Soria had agreed to appear in Congress next week to provide explanations. But further emerging information about his alleged ties to a Jersey-based company put

Soria up against the ropes of Thursday. Both Soria and the PP had claimed that the acting minister was not present on the organization chart of any opaque company. But documents seen by EL PAÍS in the company register of Jersey show his signature confirming that he was director of a company named Mechanical Trading Limited.

Press Release of Soria

In a press release, Soria explained that he had held a conversation with acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and informed him of his decision to step down. “Following a conversation with the prime minister, I conveyed my irrevocable decision to resign from the functions that I was tasked with since December 21 as minister of industry, energy and tourism,” reads the statement. Soria said he made the decision on the basis of “the lack of precise information over events that took place over 20 years ago” and “out of consideration for the evident harm that this situation is causing the PP”.

I have nothing to do with any company based in Panama” - claims Soria

The company, UK Lines Limited, was incorporated on 23 September 1992 by Mossack Fonseca and appointed Tomás Poggio, Méndez Fernández de Lugo and José Manuel Soria as its directors. A letter was sent to the Panamanian law firm asking to remove Mr. Soria’s name—which had been included “by mistake”—from the register of directors, appointing his brother Luis Alberto in his place. El Confidencial reported the minister had denied the information, but on April 7, Mr. Soria said that anyone named in the Panama Papers—”a politician, a businessman, a sportsman”—”has to come out immediately to justify what is going on there”. “Those things need explaining straight away”, he insisted. UK Lines Limited was dissolved on March 6, 1995. On June 17 of the same year, Mr. Soria was elected Mayor of Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. Mr. Soria told a TV show on La Sexta on Monday morning that: “I can say to you that I totally and resoundingly refute that I might have anything to do with any company registered in Panama or in any other tax haven”. He said he has instructed his lawyers to make a formal request to the Panama government to determine if his name appeared “in any company registered in that country”. Soria said that he made his decision taking into account all and “out of consideration for the evident harm that this situation is causing the Popular Party (PP)”.

The data from the Labour Force Survey (EPA) for the first quarter 2016 published Thursday show that, beyond declarations and improvement in some indicators, the recovery of employment and unemployment is not yet consistent. The year started with 11,900 more unemployed, up to 4,791,400 unemployed people, and the destruction of 64,600 jobs. On the other hand, the first quarter tends to lead to job losses. 2016 has been no exception, with 64,600 fewer jobs, although the loss of employees is far from the hardest years of the crisis. In 2010, for example, busy and 237,600 disappeared last year were 114,300. He was very shy, and I could see something was amiss...” Navarro, a 38-year-old psychologist and mother of five, eventually found an article by a contributor from the Daniela Foundation. She got in touch with the association, which helped her to understand what was going on with her child, and to take the first steps. “One day, at dinner time, we said that we knew a girl with a penis, and there was a dialogue with my older daughters while the little one listened. I told all five of them that we were going to redecorate their rooms, and asked them to draw a self-portrait so we could print it out and hang it from the wall. And María drew herself the way she is: a girl with a dress, long hair and a girl’s name. I remember when he handed me the notebook I said ‘Oh, Mario, you look very nice with long hair,’ and he looked up and said very earnestly, ‘I’m going to be a girl, I really am.’ He was five years old.” María’s family began communicating this reality to the people around them. “On a Friday he left school as Mario, and the following Monday he showed up as María, wearing his uniform pinafore dress. There was no problem,” says Navarro.

TOMÁS MARÍN. Madrid. Spanish police officer fell to his death after he was apparently pushed into the path of an oncoming train. The officer, named as 28-year-old Francisco Javier Ortega, was talking to a group on the platform at Madrid’s Embajadores station, when it is alleged he asked to see identification papers of one of the men. Bystanders waiting for the train were filming on their mobile phones

as a minor scuffle broke out on the platform yesterday. Horrified onlookers in the station can then be heard screaming as the pair are both hit by the train. Mr Ortega was then rushed to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries of the boody. The man who is alleged to have pushed him on to the tracks has been named by Spanish newspaper El Pais as 28-yearold Yode Ali Raba from the Ivory Coast. The paper reports that he illegally entered Spain

in 2011 and after surviving the impact of being struck by the train, he is in hospital, where he is being treated for a severe head injury. Today, the Director General of Police in Spain, Ignacio Cosidó described Mr Ortega’s death as ‘murder’. He told El Pais: ‘It is clear that there is intent on taking the agent to the railway tracks and throwing him under when a train was approaching.’ His comments came after a ceremony took place.

JH: I realized four years ago that we were coming up to a hundred years since drugs were first banned, and I had a quite personal reason for wanting to think about this. We had addiction in my family, bad drug addiction. One of my earliest memories was of trying to wake up one of my relatives and not being able to, and as I got older realizing why; and I guess I started to think that there were just loads of really basic questions about this subject that I didn’t know the answer. My teachers had never told me; the culture had never told me; our governments never told me; and the more I looked into it, going on this big, long journey where I met a crazy range of people, from a transsexual crack dealer in Brooklyn to a scientist who spends his time feeding hallucinogens to mongooses to see what will happen, to the only country that’s ever decriminalized all drugs, from cannabis to crack, with incredible results; and I guess what really struck me is almost everything we think we know about the subject is wrong. LF: Going back 100 years before The Prohibition... JH: It’s fascinating. Drugs were legal in the United States, in Britain, everywhere in the world.

If you wanted to buy opiates, you go to a local store, the equivalent to CVS; it was mostly sold in the form of something called Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup, which was a kind of cough mixture. You could buy cocaine-based teas; you could buy cocaine-based drinks; and it’s important to understand there were some problems related to that. There was of course some addiction just like we have addiction to aak of a LF: If you say addiction is an adaptation to a really troubled society, is it even responsible to decriminalize without dealing with that deeper trouble? JH: Oh, I think you do need to deal with it; and I think the best way to talk about this is not in an abstract way, but to look at Portugal; so I spent time in Portugal, and 15 years ago Portugal had one of the worst drug problems in Europe. One percent of the population was addicted to heroin, it was crazy, and they decided to start up a scientific panel that would solve the issue. The scientific panel came back and said decriminalize everything, from cannabis to crack, but, and this is the crucial second point that speaks exactly to what you’re saying, take all the money we were spending on arresting drug users, imprisoning drug users, all of that, and spend it all on reconnecting addicts with society suddenly have to be terrifying; they start having fights; suddenly the price goes massively up . So addicts are driven into ever. The vast majority of addicts had jobs; they were no more likely to be poor than anyone else.

Cocaine addiction is like addiction to alcohol. All are drugs”

We live in a culture based on consmption. Addiction is a subset of that” JH: It’s fascinating. Drugs were legal in the United States, in Britain, everywhere in the world. There was of course some addiction just like we have addiction to alcohol; it was not that big a deal. The vast majority of addicts had jobs; they were no more likely to be poor than anyone else. LF: If things could change, how would it be ? There was of course some addiction just like we have addiction to alcohol; it was not that big a deal. The vast majority of addicts had jobs; they were no more likely to be poor than anyone else. And really what you see, I tell it through the story of this extraordinary doctor in California at the birth of the Drug War called Henry Smith Williams, who really saw that as soon as drugs were banned all sorts of problems started to metastasize. They’re transferred from pharmacies to armed, criminal gangs who suddenly have to be terrifying; they start having fights; suddenly the price goes massively up . So addicts are driven into everything from prostitution to property crime. You suddenly see this huge outbreak of all sorts of crime that wasn’t there when they were legal. We could be drinking vodka now, right? We’re not drunk because we’ve got stuff to do, you

The opposite of addiction is not sobriety, but true connection between humans” - Johann Hari

If you used to be a mechanic and you developed a drug problem, they’ll go to a garage and they’ll say employ this guy for a year and we’ll pay half his wages; and the results have been extraordinary. There’s this one layer, which is reconnecting addicts with society. There’s a much bigger social change that needs to happen, but that’s stuff that you and I believe needs to happen anyway. I mean we… Something has gone badly wrong in our culture. We’ve create a culture where really large numbers of the people around us can’t bear to be present in their lives. They need to medicate themselves to get through the day. Now, that’s an indictment of the whole consumerist world that we have built, and there’s all sorts of reasons we need to deal with that. Naomi Klein’s new book, This Changes Everything, which is an amazing book, explains why we need to deal with

it in order to prevent the climate unraveling. This is another reason why we need to deal with it. I think about this subject to feel powerless, and this is such a big thing, the War on Drugs. LF: I want to talk more about that, but before there were allegations of plagiarism, you apologized, you had to leave your position at The Independent. JH: What I did that was terribly wrong was that sometimes when I interviewed people I took things they had written elsewhere or said elsewhere, and acted like they’d been said directly to me. In order to show people that that hasn’t happened in this book, the audio is available. You can hear the people saying these things to me. That’s a cool thing, anyway, because there are so many amazing people that I interviewed, and I think to be able to

hear their voices is really a valuable thing. But, yeah, I deliberately didn’t think in those terms. why we need to deal with it in order to prevent the climate unraveling. This is another reason why we need to deal with it.er and that kind of thing; and I used that for a couple of years. I would advise people not to do it, but again I think you don’t want to use tholepsy drug; I’m not narcoleptic, you now notice, and I had read that er and that kind of thing; and I used that for a couple of years. I would advise people not to do it, but again I think you don’t want to use tholep LF: You do say you had a dependency, I sue yourself JH: Yeah, I used a lot of this drug called Provigil, which is a drug, a narcolepsy drug; I’m not narcoleptic, you now notice, and I had read that it makes you basically smarter and you can work harder and that kind of

Is Spain winning the battle against domestic violence abuse?

Despite lower fatal domestic abuse rates, Spain lacks of victim reporting. Last year rose the number of women killed at home by their husbands ANNA CUENCA. Barcelona

With the initial spark gone, her life deteriorated into a years-long nightmare, eventually forcing her to flee her home town for the shelter, just outside Madrid. “He would have killed me... and I would have let him kill me,” she says. Sixty women were murdered in Spain last year - beaten to death, stabbed or burnt by partners or ex-partners The figure, however, is down from 71 murders in 2003, the year before

Olga Aranda, who admits without the shelter, she would have remained with a husband who abused her “physically, sexually” for 16 years. “Where could I go with three babies and without a job?” says the 45 y/o, who took refuge in the shelter in 2005 with her children after sleeping for years with a knife under her pillow. “Men are violent by

La Liga is proving itself as the best in

the world after this weekend journey

Three teams fighting for the title race are going to the wire until last match of

the Spanish La Liga, since just one point separates the three Champions teams

J

LÚA PENA. Barcelona ust with two games remaining and three teams separated by a solitary point, the title race in La Liga is the most exciting around. Not for thirty years has the chase gone so close, but Barcelona remain in the driving seat, knowing if they win their remaining games, they will be celebrating a 24th title in all. The pressure is on though, with both Atletico Madrid, whom they lead solely on the head-to-head rule, and Real Madrid, a point further back, completely relentless. All three sides once again reached the summit on Saturday, clinching victories at different times in the folowwing days. The Wa-

les player and Real Madrid, Gareth Bale’s strike, in the absence of both Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema, first gave Los Blancos victory at Real Sociedad, before Antoine Griezmann saved Los Rojiblancos by sinking Rayo Vallecano. Luis Suarez then helped clinch a 2-0 victory for the Blaugrana against Real Betis. Perhaps Barcelona’s absence from the Champions League, having been knocked out by Atletico in the quarter-finals, will also play to their advantage, with both Madrid clubs having one eye on last four ties with Bayern Munich and Manchester City respectively. Gareth Bale used his head to strike the killer blow to Real Sociedad on Saturday.

BARCELONA

Luis Suarez has now taken a commanding lead in the race for the Pichichi, having scored four more La Liga goals than injured Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo. His 35th goal of the league campaign came after 81 minutes on Saturday night, as Barcelona returned to the summit with a 2-0 win after seeing both Real and Atletico Madrid pick up three points earlier in the day.Ronaldo’s continued absence with a hamstring problem has given the Uruguayan striker the opportunity to assert himself in the race for the the top-scorer awards both domestically and across Europe’s top five leagues, for which the Portuguese forward, Benfica’s Jonas and Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain are his main rivals.Suarez, who had scored eight goals in his previous two games, is currently enjoying his best season to date, having netted 54 goals in all competitions. He and his strike partners, Neymar and Lionel Messi, have surpassed their 122-strong combined total from last season. The Blaugrana are once again favourites to clinch a 24th league title, remaining just two games in last weeks of La Liga 2015/2016.

Leicester City miss chance to seal Premier League

Foxes must wait until next Monday to claim Premier League title after being held to an one to one draw with Manchester United in a pulsating clash at Old Trafford OLIVER YEW. they now sit eight points clear with Tottenham Hotspur having three games remaining However, that gap does allow the possibility for their position being guaranteed on Monday night when Spurs travel to existing holders Chelsea.

Anything but a win for Mauricio Pochetino’s will give the Foxes the title without even having to play on the night. At Old Trafford, Anthony Martial slammed the hosts in front early on, only for captain Wes Morgan to draw the game level with a close-range

header. Clear chances were few and far between late on, with exRed Devi ls midfielder Drinkwater was sent off with a yellow card in the second last halftime, which referee Michael Oliver decided was just outside the area. United, meanwhile, go fifth in

Needing victory on Sunday to claim the first top-flight title in their 132-year history, Claudio Ranieri’s side started nervously and they were behind in the eighth minute after Anthony Martial’s ninth league goal of the season. But the visitors showed the character that has underpinned their campaign so far, levelling the scores nine minutes later.

Victory meand confident

Both sides continued to push forward in search of a winner as both Leonardo Ulloa and Riyad Mahrez went close, before Chris Smalling’s header rattled the post with just over 10 minutes remaining. However, Ranieri’s men, who face Everton at the King Power Stadium next Saturday, could be crowned champions without kicking a ball if Tottenham fail to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday Night Football. With Jamie Vardy still suspended, Ranieri stuck with the same side that won 4-0 at home to Swansea, but the visitors made the worst possible start and were made to pay when Antonio Valencia’s cross reached Martial at the far post, and the Frenchman stroked the ball through the legs of Kasper Schmeichel.

Victory means confident

United were brimming with confidence and continued to dominate, nearly doubling their advantage in the 15th minute but for a superb save from Schmeichel, who got down well to parry away Jesse Lingard’s drilled shot after Marouane Fellaini’s knock down. It proved to be a crucial save as two minutes later, Leicester were back on level terms as Morgan muscled his way through the United defence to head Drinkwater’s free-kick

It was end-to-end stuff at Old Trafford but again it was United who looked the more likely to score with Wayne Rooney, playing again in a deeper role for the hosts, dragging a shot wide from 20 yards.

Time for Leicester’s title

In the 22nd minute, Robert Huth appeared to grab Fellaini’s hair and the Belgium international reacted by lashing out twice, once with his elbow and then with his hand. However, both escaped punishment after referee Michael Oliver missed the incident. He’s now three goals away from equalling his best goal tally in a Blanco shirt, 22 goals in a debut season that saw him win the Copa del Rey and Champions League. The 26 year-old’s stature has risen above the rest of his teammates when the team needs him the most, with three goals and six points during the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. The French striker hadn’t scored in four games, surprising considering his immaculate record this season, but was there when it counted as he came on and made his mark immediately. “On a personal level, I’m glad to have returned to scoring ways,

Nadal ready to fly Spain flag in Rio Rafael Nadal has been selected to be the Spain’s flag-bearer at the Olympics Games of Rio 2016

T

PAUL WILKERS. London

ennis star Rafael Nadal has been given the honour of carrying the Spanish flag at this summer’s Olympics in Rio. The competition opens on August 5 at the Estadio Olimpico Joao Havelange, with the man from the Balearic Islands leading the way.President of the Spanish Olympic Committee, Alejandro Blanco, made the announcement with 100 days to go until the start in Brazil. The decision was made public by the Board of Olympic federations, which gathered 30 presidents of sports at their headquarters and unanimously chose the best tennis player in Spain’s history. It’s not the first time that Nadal has been selected, but when he was given the accolade in 2012 he had to pull out of the tournament through injury. “The flag represents the best of Spanish sport and it’s difficult to choose one with such great results around the world, but in this case, the talk about Nadal

was easy,” said Blanco. The Spanish Tennis Federation believes that Nadal meets all the required standards of selection, although he missed a round of the Davis Cup held in July. pon him through injury, it’s expected that this could be disputed should a problem arise. Regulations dictate the flag bearer should be the athlete with the most Olympic participations, but this criterion was already bypassed in the 2012 election. The Spanish tennis player, Rafael Nadal has a gold medal, along with Taekwondo’s Joel Gonzalez and Sailing’s Marina Alabau. Rafael Nadal thanked the Spanish Olympic Committee (SOC) via social media for unanimously choosing him to carry Spain’s flag during this summer’s Olympics games. Alejandro Blanco, president of the SOC, notified the Spanish tennis player of the committee’s decision. ”I’s like to thank the Spanish Olympics Committee for the amazing chance to be the flag

“This honor

gives me immense pride” - thanks Nadal bearer during the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this summer 2016,” said Rafa Nadal. The, he added to his speech that: ”This great honor gives me immense pride and I hope Spain’s team can perform well to make this summer unforgettable.”

Response to France

Rafael Nadal has asked the ITF (International Tennis Federation) to make his Athlete Biological Passport to be made public, in response to accusations of doping.French ex-minister of sports, Roselyne Bachelot, has claimed that the tennis star’s absence from the game in 2012 was a method of avoiding suspension for substance abuse, rather than injury as Nadal has maintained. ”Please, make the data about me public. Please publish my Athlete Biological Passport, (ABP) all the anti-doping data about me,” the Spanish star said in an email sent to new ITF boss, David Ha-

ggerty.Recently the Spaniard re-emerged onto the scene by winning the Barcelona Open, tying Guillermo Vilas’ record for tournament wins on Clay, with 49. The Spaniard player, Rafael Nadal has issued a formal complaint and initiated a lawsuit against Roselyne Bachelot, the French ex-minister of sports who had previously accused the Spaniard of doping last March on live television. According to Bachelot’s accusation, Spanish Nadal’s absence in the first and in the second half of 2012 was a way to protect the player. “I’d ike to thank the Spanish Olympic Committee for this opportunity”.

Basketball rebels could be denied Olympic glory FIBA seeks stricted sanctions for the teams joining the rival Euroleague SARAH PARREL. London Top European basketball teams could miss out on the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro this summer, warns the International Basketball Federation. The only one item on FIBA’s is, after a meeting of more than threeand-a-half hours, the committee decided that the punishment will centre on their participation in future Olympic Games and World Cups, with Rio being the first where sanctions would apply. The row has broken out after some countries aligned themselves with the unsanctioned Euroleague. The federation will study each case and meet with federations before making its decision in the next weeks. This could be good news for the Spanish federation which is in favour of the rival Euroleague competition. Other countries which could be affected by a possible ban are Serbia and Italy, who are hosting two of

the Olympic qualifying rounds. FIBA - FIBA, the International Basketball Federation, is the world governing body for basketbal - decided to use the “nuclear solution” and banned the Slovenian and the Spanish men’s national team from Eurobasket 2017. A total of 14 teams is expected to be banned with only France from the moment staying out of this mess.

It can be the last decision

This is the saction that FIBA has decided to impose to every national federation which has a club playing in Eurocup. According to reports similar letters have been send to Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Montengro and FYROM, the countries which have teams in the Adriatic League. It’s also reported that Spain has received such a letter and next in line should be Spain, Russia, Greece, Turkey, Lithuania, Italy, Poland, Israel and every other country

with a team which has commited to play next season in Eurocup. The national federations can “explain themselves” until the 20th of April, which probably means putting more pressure to some of the local clubs, non lucratives. It remains to be seen how this will end, since Serbia, Croatia, Italy, Greece, Serbia, Israel, Lithuania, Spain and Turkey have already qualified to the 2017 tournament and FIBA with this move its practically hurting its own tournament. ““We are pleased to partner with FIBA and the NBL to bring the first Basketball without Borders camp“. The qualification games for the open spots start on the 31st of August. In theory, the national teamd of Spain and Lithuania are also in danger of being banned from the upcoming Olympic Games and that may mean also bans for other teams from the pre-Olympic tournaments this year in Rio de Janeiro, placed in Brazil.
