Hígia Beatriz Mateus (and group) | December 2013 Developed at University of Aveiro in the course Project in Design IV, for the “Toilet of The Future” competition by OLI, a Portuguese toilet manufacturer. Hígia is an inclusive public toilet which is environmentally friendly and discourages vandalism. The toilet seat uses a biodegradable plastic film that renovates at every use, making it possible to sit. No water is used while flushing. When not in use, Hígia’s glass walls turn transparent, promoting the trust from its future users and discouraging anyone of leaving it damaged. This project was recognized with the first place at the competition.

Overal Beatriz Mateus | April 2014 Developed at TU Delft in the course Design and Cultural Impact, for a competition by HEMA within the domain of dining. Research was performed to figure out problems faced while having meals nowadays, such as the lack of time. Overal emerges from the trend of eating anywhere, allowing its user to safely eat all over the house and working simultaneously. It is made up by a ceramic and a rubber part. The latter works both as heat protection and as a lid that keeps the dirt and smells after eating.

Plamp Beatriz Mateus (and group) | June 2013 Developed at University of Aveiro in the course Project in Design III, for a competition by LG that consisted on creatively using the new OLED technology (a flat sheet of LED light). A research was carried out regarding lightening, eating, and the influence one may have on the other. It was concluded that there is a significant effect of light on emotions. Plamp is a product aimed at restaurants, defining a dining concept on its own. It gives a new dining experience with stronger intensity. The different colours are meant to be adjusted according to the mood of the meal or specifically to the dish itself, allowing the cook to emphasize certain flavours.

Take On Me Beatriz Mateus | June 2012 A project carried out at University of Aveiro at the course Project in Design I, connected with the Fast Food Museum. The goal was to create a merchandising product specific to the museum. Take On Me is a portable rubber device to allow fast food to be eated faster. I wanted to give it a practical function but also make it easy to carry (both before and after the meal). The user is able to walk while eating, since only one hand is required. Rubber isolates the temperature of both the cold beverage and the hot meal. After the meal, the object can be turned inside out and it becomes a ball, keeping the dirty parts inside.

Lampquake Beatriz Mateus | December 2012 A project carried out at University of Aveiro in Project in Design II. The goal was to take a simple IKEA lamp and use it to visually portrait a natural disaster. With the theme of earthquakes, I decided to go beyond the visual portrait. Lampquake appears to be an unmodified IKEA lamp that once touched it bounces, causing shadows to oscillate all over the room. It is a fun interactive approach to a serious situation, a product intended to raise money for the victims of such catastrophes while raising awareness amongst its users.

Light Up Beatriz Mateus (and group) | October 2012 A project carried out at University of Aveiro in Project in Design II, for a competition by the Portuguese cable service company MEO. The task was to design a new router, satellite box and remote control that would make costumers happier with their service. Due to the amount of elderly users, focus was given to the remote control (that very often confuses them). The remote control has LED-lighted buttons, that appear and disappear according to the interface’s needs. Less buttons mean less confusion. However, discrete physical buttons remained so that the user is able to use the remote control without being required to look at it.

Suitch Beatriz Mateus (and group) | December 2012 A project carried out at University of Aveiro, related to the previous project for MEO. Now familiar with the challenges of interfaces and controllers, we were asked to develop a user-friendly concept (including graphic identity, interface and remote control). “Suitch is an interface that keeps its grid structure at all situations. The channels are no longer numbers, but a sequence organized automatically according to the user’s preferences. The remote control has a round touch surface that supports different scroll commands and also works as a button. The simplicity of the remote allows the user to focus on the screen.

And The Winner Is... Beatriz Mateus | March 2013 A poster developed for the award ceremony “And The Winner Is... taking place at the University of Aveiro, recognizing the best works done by design students each year. The poster portrays part of a designer’s work: the printing stage, where CMYK marks are visible. The camouflaged title allowed an interaction: from a far point of view, the title is visible but not the details of the event. As the person comes closer to read the details, the title fades and it is hardly readable. The visual aspect and the interaction were used to captivate. This poster was awarded the following year in the same ceremony.

Hire Me! Beatriz Mateus | September 2014 “Hire Me! is a Curriculum Vitae made out of my need for a job to survive while living in Antwerp. I wanted to practice Dutch at the same time I was learning it, so working as a waiteress seemed like the best way to exercise. This CV got me 3 different jobs: one in a hotel, one in a restaurant and one in a catering company!
