welcome This time last year when I took up my position at Beatson Cancer Charity, I could never have imagined a pandemic would hit, which would see every single aspect of our lives affected. It has been a challenging year for most, but more so for people living with cancer and their families.

Martin Cawley, CEO @martin_cawley13

Despite such difficult times, we remain determined to help support people and their families in the most positive ways we can. Like many in the sector, our charity has been through some turbulent months but with your support we have continued to raise funds and invest in providing much loved and valued services, funding research and innovation and supporting clinical excellence.

Our annual Bauble campaign focusses on Celebrating, Thanking and Remembering and this year, which seems fitting, we have introduced Hope. We hope you continue supporting our bauble appeal and get the chance to attend and join in with some of our events, albeit virtually.

Fundraising over the past year has been particularly difficult but as always you reached out and continued to support us. Your support to this Charity is truly valued.

I hope you enjoy reading this update and allows you to look forward to the events and activities we have planned for the months ahead.

We want the new year to represent a fresh start for those that need it.

Best wishes We’re with you

meet lynsey haggarty Last year, at only 37, Lynsey Haggarty found out she had Breast Cancer. Here’s her story… Last April, just after my 36th birthday, I found out I had Breast Cancer. I had two young kids to look after, a career to maintain and a busy life to manage. My life was turned upside down and I really wasn’t sure how I was going to cope. I was terrified. I never thought I would be the person telling my children – Eilidh, 10 and Ruaraidh, 8 – that their mum had cancer. Eilidh immediately broke into tears and asked “Mummy, are you going to die?” I felt awful that I had worried my kids and my husband. I put on a brave face and reassured them, “Mummy will be fine.”

“Beatson Cancer Charity were there with support and love, just when I needed it most.”

6

Inside though, I was so afraid, I knew I had a challenging journey ahead of me. I needed chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy and a variety of targeted treatments, which would be ongoing over the next few years. The doctors and nurses were lovely and so reassuring, but naturally, I had very anxious moments – worrying about myself, my kids, my husband and the rest of my family. Then I was introduced to Beatson Cancer Charity. Beatson Cancer Charity’s Wellbeing Centre was a total oasis for me, it was a space where I could escape and completely switch off from all my worries. The Wellbeing staff are hugely caring and were always on hand with a cup of tea and words of advice when I needed it most. At times when cancer was on the forefront of my mind, I could pop into the centre, get stuck into a puzzle and get some breathing space from reality. It really is a sanctuary for thousands of people like me. www.beatsoncancercharity.org

“So this year, I will be hanging my Beatson Bauble to say thank you to everyone at The Beatson and Beatson Cancer Charity, for providing support and love, just when I needed it most.” Thanks to The Beatson and the support of Beatson Cancer Charity, I found out in December that my body had responded to treatment and my cancer has now gone. This was such a special moment for my entire family, it really was the best Christmas gift ever. I will always remember the relief on both the kids and Gary’s face; they didn’t need to worry anymore. I now face a few years of targeted treatment to keep my cancer at bay, which means monthly visits to The Beatson and hopefully, when Covid-19 restrictions ease, plenty more trips to the Wellbeing Centre.

café Our much loved Beatson Café is open and serving delicious coffee, cakes and meals to patients, families and staff within The Beatson. Government measures are in place and Bella is ‘buzzing’ to be sharing her favourite recipe of 2020 with you! Bella’s Bites The perfect Christmas treat – grab your ingredients, line 2 muffin trays, pre-heat your oven to 200C/ 180C fan/gas 6 and you’re ready to BAKE.

“I’m hanging my Beatson Bauble this year to celebrate all of our amazing supporters who have carried us through a tricky year! It’s thanks to you that Beatson Cancer Charity can continue to provide care, love and hope to those affected by cancer right now.” – Bella, representing #TeamBeatson

Bella’s Christmas Honey Muffins Ingredients • 2 medium eggs • 125ml vegetable oil • 250ml semi-skimmed milk • 250g golden caster sugar • 400g self-raising flour • 1 tsp salt • 3 tablespoons honey • 100g choc chips (optional) Method 1. Add 125ml vegetable oil and 250ml semi-skimmed milk and beat until just combined. Add 250g golden caster sugar and whisk until you have a smooth batter. 2. Sift in 400g self-raising flour and 1 tsp salt and mix until smooth. Be careful not to over-mix the batter as this will make the muffins tough. 3. Stir in honey & choc chips (optional) 4. Fill muffin cases two-thirds full and bake for 20-25 mins, until risen, firm to the touch and a skewer inserted in the middle comes out clean. If the trays do not fit on one shelf, swap the shelves around after 15 mins of cooking. Enjoy!
