ExerciseEquipmentForTheHome.

Benchmarkisaluxuryworkoutbench designedforthehome.Withhomeworkouts andfitnessstreamingservicesincreasingin marketsize,existingequipmentstillusesthe samecolourschemesandmaterialsusedin thegym-lookingoutofplaceinthehome. Benchmarksdifferentiatesitselfwithits furniturefocuseddesign,whilstretainingthe performanceofexistingworkoutequipment.

Benchmarkisdesignedtocomplimentyour home’sinteriordesign,withninecolour combinations,acompactdesignandunique storagesolutions,makingittheoneplacefor allhomeexercise.Nowrecognisedbythe FurnitureMakersCompanyforitsdesign-it wasexhibitedattheUK’slargestfurniture showinBirmingham2023.

Equippedwithamatchingsetof adjustabledumbbellsandafirm cushiontop,Benchmarkprovides aspacetoeasilystartaworkout.

Multipurposehandles allowforeasyhome manoeuvrabilityand awayofattaching resistancebands, allowingforabroad rangeofexercises.

Thebackhousesastoragearea, providingusersaplacetostore theirexistingexerciseequipment, suchasyogamatsandfoamrollers, alongwithunuseddumbbellplates.

Thisprocessstartedwithestablishingthe clientpersona.Whowerethey?Whatdid theylike?Whatweretheirmotives?This processinvolvedtalkingtotheusergroup todefinewhattheywerelookingtousethe

deviceforandexpertsaboutwhat exerciseswereappropriatetoperformat home.Thiswascontinuedthroughoutthe designjourney,providingconstantuser feedback-alteringeverypartofthedesign.

ConceptRefinement.

Afterthetargetaudienceselectedfour favouritedesigns,adecisionmatrixwas createdtodeterminewhichdesignwould bethemostsuitabletopursue.The winningdesignwasthenprototypedintoa

scalemodeltotestuserinteraction, proposedheightandgetasenseofthe spaceitwouldutilise.Materialsampling wasconductedtofindabalancebetween performanceandaesthetics.

UserFeedback.

Anessentialpartofthedesignprocesswas gaininguserfeedback.Anthropometricdata wasevaluatedtodefineallinteractiveparts ofthedesign,withfocusgroupstestingthe results.

Modelling&Sampling.

Asthefinalproductwastoolargeto prototype,scalemodelswereneededto gainavisualunderstandingofthefinal assemblyandbeusedinroleplaysgaininginsightintohowtheenduser

wouldinteractwithit.ARmodelswere usedtotesthowthefinalproductwouldfit intoahomeenvironmentandintroducea senseofscalewhenshowingtofocus groups.

Taking15daystomanufacture,thisfully functionalprototypecansupportover 180kgandiscurrentlyreplacingmyneed forthegym.Madefromveneeredplywood, itspiecescanbewaterjetcut,withthe

curvedbasebeingsteambentusingaJIG. Eachpieceisconnectedwithdowelsfor easeofmanufacture,andtheupholstered topusesthesamefoamasKaratemats.To discovermore,pleasevisitmywebsite.

PODPortable. DesignedForUseAnywhere.

PODPortableisthesecondlightinthePOD familyofproducts.It’sacylindricallight designedtobeusedanywhere.Createdtobe usedwhenacarbreaksdownatnight,this lightwasdesignedtoberuggedandcompact soitwouldfitinagloveboxoraboot’sclosed storage.

Over2.5millioncarsareattendedtobythe RACalone,withoverafifthofthesebeingat night.Somedriverscarrytorches,butthis requiresthemholdthetorchwithonehand, becominginconvenientwhenyouneedboth handstofixtheproblem.Existingbreakdown lightsareeitherdesignedformechanicsor breakdownservicesanddon'ttakeinto accounttheaveragedriver.

Withmultiplebrightnesssettings,PODcan adapttolightingconditionswithasimple press.Featuringfourneodymiummagnets,it canbeattachedtoanymagneticsurface.

Formideationwasexploredtofindtheideal shapetobebothcomfortabletopickupand

enclosetheelectronics.CADmodels exploredtheseideasina3Dlandscapeand thefinalselectionswerethenmadeintofoam

modelswerethenmadetogainaphysical senseofscaleandinteractivitywiththeuser.

Developmentofthespringmechanism

lookedatuniquewaysofusingacompression springtotriggertheswitch.Afinalselection ofafour-springsystemallowedforeven pressuretobeappliedacrossthetop,sothe switchwasalwaystriggered.

This3Dprintedprototypewasabletotest themechanicalelementsofthedesignand theeaseofrepair.Theproductionedition swapsoutthecoincellbatteryforaLi-ion andfeaturesthinnerwallsforinjection

moulding.Theorangebandaroundthe middleistoindicatetotheuserwhenthe springshavefullycompressed,causingthe bandtodisappear.

TheOneWardrobeEssential.

Siennaisanewtakeonthewardrobe organisationapp.DesignedusingApple’s UserInterfaceGuidelinesforiOS,iPadOS &macOS,Sienna’sUXwasdesignedtobe assimpleaspossibleforanindividualto use.Siennausesthesametechniqueasart galleriesbyusingaminimalcolourpalette ofcharcoalandoff-whitetoshowoffthe user'sclothesratherthantheUI.

SiennausesMLtocoordinatesuggested outfitsfromtheuser'sitemlibrary, recommendsoutfitchangesdependingon theweather,suggestsitemsthatwould enhancetheirwardrobeaccordingtotheir styleandoffersadiscoverpagefor businessestopromotetheirclothing.

mockupwascreated.UtopiaSTD.was selectedasthefontduetoitsreadability andluxuryaesthetic.Photosizeswere optimisedfornewerphonesandsearch wasinfluencedbyAppleBooks.

DetailDevelopment.

Themockupwasexpandedtocreatea basicwireframe.Theschedulepagewas thenredesignedtohaveactiveweather notificationsandadapttoApple’sHIG accessibilityrecommendations.Afterfully

prototypingtheBetaappandintroducing motiondesignforanimations,usertesting wasconductedtofinditsflawsandgive feedbackonitsoveralldesign.

PODTask.

ANewLevelOfInteraction.

PODTaskwasdesignedtochangethewayan individualinteractswithatasklight. Traditionally,userswouldmovethearmto changewherethelightispositioned.POD Taskfocusesonmovingthelightsourceitself. IncludingthreemagneticPODs,ausercan moveeachPODalongthearmtochangethe lightingposition.Byrotatingthedialoneach POD,youcanadaptthebrightnessandcolour temperaturetoyourneeds.

Firstdesignedin2017,PODTaskhasseen somemajordesignchanges.Sincethefirst concept,manyoftheissuessurroundingits originaldesignweresolvedthroughCMF research,theintroductionofnewtechnology andafullIndustrialredesign.ThisshowsPOD Task’sdesignjourneyfrom2017,untiltodays concept.

PlaceaPODontheundersideofthearm anditmagneticallysnapsintoplacevia oneofthesixchargingzones.

PODTaskhasamonochromaticdualfinishdesign.Availableinmultiple colouroptions,eachvariantfocuseson representingtimelessnessandluxury.

DesignedusingDieterRams’10principles, PODTaskusesluxuryfinishesandmaterials toconveyanelegantappearance,whilstits shapeisfocusedonfunction.

EachPODfeaturesarotatingcrowntoadjust lightingsettings.Simplypressthecrownto switchbetweenbrightnessintensityand colourtemperature.

GenerationI-2017.

Firstdesignedin2017,PODTaskstartedas amorefunctionalconcept.However,many issuessurroundedthissolution,including; weightdistributionconcerns,PODsize issues,easeofmanufactureandthelackof deskspaceilluminated.

Thisprovidedastrongstartingpointfor thelightsredesign.

NewConcept-2022.

PODTaskwasredesignedusingthe learningsfromthefirstiteration,including introducinganewsupportstructureand increasedfunctionalityforeachPOD. Designformanufacturewasconsidered

earlyon.Thearmandbasehousingthe electronicswouldbepressedaluminium, withasiliconeunderlayandthePOD casingswouldbesimilar,butwitha polishedfinish.

PODFormExploration.

RefiningTheConcept.

TheintroductionofQI2wirelesscharging allowedPODTask’sdesigntochange massively.Theentireexteriorwouldfinally becomeuninterrupted,providinga minimalisticformthatallowedthePOD’s

toattachwithoutanyexteriorconnections. Thesupportwasoverhauledtointroduce rotationandPOD’swereredesignedto featurearotatingcrown.

NEWINDUSTRIALDESIGNDEVELOPMENTS EXPERIENCE&DESIGNFORMANUFACTUREREFINEMENTS

CMFDesign.

Thenewindustrialdesignallowedfor explorationintoCMF.Influencedby luxurygoods,Tasktakesinspirationfrom designersunglasses.Researchinghome interiortrendsalongwithfinishsamples

allowedforadualfinishmonochromatic design.Thenewdesignfocusesontimeless colourpalettes,withcolourselection beinginspiredbythe‘100YearsofAD’ colourtrendsand‘SoftElectronics’.

FinalConcept.

ThefinaldesignhasastrongCMFfocus. Beinganindustrialconcept,PODTaskis currentlybeingdesignedformanufacture, althoughtheprocessandmaterialshave alreadybeenconsidered.Intendedforthe

luxurymarket,PODTaskutilisespremium materialsandenhancedfeaturestobringa uniqueexperience.

Adapt. AReducedMobilityTrowel.

ThisisAdapt,anaccessibility-focusedtrowel designedforthosewithreducedhandgrip mobility.Itscurvedsupportisdesignedto reducewriststrainwhilstallowingenough pressuretobeusedwhendigging.

Originallydesignedforspinalunitpatients toaidrehabilitation,theoveralldesignwas inspiredbythecurvatureofthespineand varioustherapyequipmentonhandaround theSpinalUnit.

Thosewithspinalinjurieshaveavarying levelofseveritywiththeirinjuries,butmany dealwithreducedornogripstrength.Partof thetherapyistoimprovemovementofall limbsandgardeningisoneoftheirmore advancedtechniques.However,thisrequires restoredgripstrength.Adaptaimstobring gardeningtherapytothosewhoarestill workingontheirgripstrength,sotheycan rebuildmusclesintheirarmsandback.
