Basalt
Bluestone
Beaumont basalt is a hard, dense stone, cut from hand selected volcanic rock. Our Blue Moon Basalt comes in both a honed finish for a dark, refined interior look or sawn for a textured outdoor surface. Basalt can feature unique cat’s paw markings. These naturally occurring pitted holes in the surface are formed during the cooling of the molten volcanic rock and is highly sought after for external applications. Approximately 20% of the sawn tiles will show these unique markings. Basalt Blue Moon Sawn 300 x 600mm 14
Basalt Blue Moon Micro-Hole Blue Moon is a very dense, hard wearing stone and the honed finish lends itself to indoor applications. The honing process deepens the stone to a smooth rich charcoal.
BASALT SPECIAL LAYING INSTRUCTIONS Extra care needs to be taken when laying Basalt. Here is a short rundown on the installation advice: > It is recommended that Basalt is sealed on 5 sides before it is laid (the face and edges, but not the back). > A rapid setting adhesive for moisture sensitive stone should be used. We recommend CTA Opticure. > When laying basalt, use a back butter technique to cover the entire surface. If glue is applied in blobs it may seep through and alter the colour on the front. BLUE MOON Honed
> Dark grout should be applied to the grout lines plus a thin application across the whole tile. If it is only applied to the edges, a picture frame effect will occur.

Basalt Blue Moon Cats-Paw Blue Moon Sawn is the perfect base for an outdoor landscape. The mid grey tone allows plants to shine. Approximately 20% of the sawn tiles are selected to have a ‘cat’s paw’ marking – as it looks like a cat has dipped its paw into the stone. These markings are unique and desirable as they add subtle interest to the stone. 600 x 300

Sealing Natural Stone We insist that all natural stone is sealed to protect and extend the life of the stone. Sealing stone gives it the absolute best protection against stains and dirt and makes cleaning much easier.

When sealing, the surface must be clean and dry. Never seal outdoors if rain is predicted within 12 hours. Never seal in extreme heat or windy conditions. It’s a great idea to always test the sealer in a corner before applying to large areas.
Beaumonts stock a range of top quality penetrating sealers. Please ask our friendly staff who will recommend the right sealer for the stone you have chosen. Sealing lasts up to 15 years.

Cleaning tips Tips to keep your stone looking good for the long term. Outdoors > Regular dirt and grime can be removed by sweeping then hosing the surface > Apply a pH neutral cleaner and water with a stiff broom to remove heavy dirt > Special purpose stone cleaner will help keep algae at bay
Indoors > Frequently dust mop interior floor finishes using clean, non treated micro-fibre wipes. Prompt removal of dirt, sand and other abrasive material will protect your stone from scratching > Clean up any spills, such as red wine, as soon as possible
Keep in mind that cleaning products which contain lemon, vinegar or other acidic products may dull or etch the surface of calcareous stones. It’s a good idea to first conduct a trial on a sample piece of the stone, or in an inconspicuous area of the finished tiling before using cleaning products.
> NEVER use acidic products on your stone
We recommend Miracle Tile and Stone Cleaner Available in 3.8Ltr (ID 553531) and 946ml (ID 553532) The Miracle Tile and Stone Cleaner available from Beaumont Tiles is a pH neutral cleaner designed for all tile, stone, grout and masonry surfaces.

Installation of stone tiles and pavers
Stone tiles Installation tips Blend from different boxes Stone is a natural product and variations in colour and surface finish are common. Variation is part of the beauty of stone. When laying stone, never work from just one crate or pallet. Open several crates or pallets and work from each to blend variations to achieve a pleasing result.
cracking due to movement. Any stone laid against a pool edge or house must also have an expansion joint at this point. Drainage, appropriate to your particular application, is an important consideration to prevent moisture related issues. Please refer to the Australian Standards.
Pre-Seal Many stones will benefit from pre-sealing prior to laying, especially light coloured stones, more porous stones and in dirty working environments.
Select the correct adhesive Selection of the correct adhesive depends upon both the tile and the substrate. All our stone has been tested by our adhesive manufacturers. Ask a Beaumont staff member for their recommendation on the most suitable adhesive. Adhesive should be applied to the back of the tile with a notched trowel and ideally back-buttered for even coverage.
Prepare the substrate Stone tiles must be laid on a solid substrate, such as a concrete slab, that is both level and free from movement. Allow for expansion joints Expansion joints for both the substrate and the tiles are necessary to prevent
Cut the Stone It is likely that cuts will need to be made and we recommend the use of a wet saw for high quality edges. Grout Grout should be chosen to blend with the colour of the stone. Apply so that no voids are created and sponge off residue with water as you work. Final clean Once the grout has set, clean again with a pH neutral cleaner prior to sealing. Sealing Sealing with a penetrating sealer is essential to assist future cleaning and longevity. Beaumont Tiles recommends Miracle premium sealers. See page 17.
Stone pavers Installation tips The substrate Stone pavers may be laid as above or can be laid on a bed of compacted road base plus washed bedding sand. Blend from different boxes Stone is a natural product and variations in colour and surface finish are common. Variation is part of the beauty of stone. When laying stone, never work from just one crate or pallet. Open several crates or pallets and work from each to blend variations to achieve a pleasing result.
Pre-Seal Many stones will benefit from pre-sealing prior to laying, especially light coloured stones, more porous stones and in dirty working environments. Drainage Drainage, appropriate to your particular application, is an important consideration to prevent moisture related issues. Please refer to the Australian Standards. Leave space between the pavers to allow for expansion.
Please Note: Brick Bond / Subway laying style is not recommended for large format tiles. 18
The gaps Once laid and dry, sweep jointing sand into the gaps. Sealing Sealing with a penetrating sealer is essential to assist future cleaning and longevity. Beaumont Tiles recommends Miracle premium sealers. See page 17. Note: There are special instructions, which must be followed when laying Basalt. See page 15.

Frequently Asked Questions Is stone suitable around a salt water or chlorine pool? All our outdoor stone is suitable around a chlorine pool. For salt water pools, all stone, except sandstone is suitable. Salt water environments may degrade the structure of sandstone over time. Can you help me find a tiler or landscaper? Yes we can help you get in touch with one, your store can provide a list of local tradespeople. It’s important that you ask to see their work before making a decision. Are there different grades of stone? YES! Stone is graded on considerations such as colour variation, size of holes, consistency and calibration. At Beaumonts we only import first grade materials.
What is the difference between stone tiles and stone pavers? Stone tiles are between 10mm and 20mm thick and are much thinner than our 30mm stone pavers. Tiles must be laid on a solid substrate such as a concrete slab while the pavers can be laid on road base and sand. Is stone slippery around a pool? Many stones are suitable around a pool, especially those with a textured finish. See “Slip Ratings” section. What is the difference between Basalt and Bluestone? Basalt is the correct name for this classification of stone and Bluestone is a description of a type of basalt.
Will all my tiles look exactly the same? No. One of the beautiful characteristics of a natural product is that no two pieces are the same. This will give your installation a unique look and in a practical sense, any variation will help to mask dirt. Do I have to seal the stone even if it is a dark colour? BT recommends sealing all stone as it makes cleaning much easier. Is stone flooring cold? There is a common misperception that a stone floor is colder than any other tile floor. This is not the case and we are confident you will find Stone is no different in temperature or holding warmth to any tile flooring. A Stone floor also will support a standard underfloor heating solution.
