Stand the test of time 5 Reasons why tiles
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/200313052728-23c6789d56ba272da4dfaddc6c461cab/v1/e6596718a8e041bd33947af8a59f6047.jpg?width=720&quality=85%2C50)
Why tiles?
They’re one of the most practical materials ever made and have proven their durability and beauty over thousands of years. The Romans used ceramics to create magnificent decorative effects in their palaces and public areas. Floors tiled in ancient Rome are still in use today. Tiles are used across the entire home; bathrooms, kitchens and laundries, bedrooms, walls and outdoors. With new manufacturing methods like digital printing and large format cutting, there are tiles for every style, design and space.
With an average lifespan that far exceeds most other flooring options, and even often pushes the 100-year mark, tiles are one of the most durable materials you can choose for your home. Tiles are among the most durable products around. In fact, tiles are so durable that there are hundreds of listings of pre1800 ceramic and porcelain tiles on sale throughout the world. The same can’t be said for other flooring products such as carpet, that needs replacing after as little as five years, or laminate timber flooring, with a lifespan that can be as short as 10 years. Rapid Renovation expert Naomi Findlay, who helps Australians maximise their property investment, says tiles are “a go-to-choice when you are looking for a long lasting and good-looking flooring option.” And because they’ve got so much staying power, tiles are a fantastic investment for your home.

1They are scratch resistant: Porcelain tiles shine bright like a diamond – and they’re almost as tough! As the highest-rated flooring material for hardness, tiles are remarkably difficult to scratch. Try with all your might, you’re going to struggle to scratch a gorgeous tile floor.

2Tiles are high-heel friendly: Love your heels but worried your floor won’t? You can trample over tiles in your tallest stilettos all day long with no fear. Tiles are the equivalent hardness of Topaz and Quartz on the Hardness Scale. That means tiles are pretty well immune to the harshest of treatment - including high heel pit marks.
3They are termite and wood-worm proof: A survey by CSIRO suggests that one in three dwellings have termites within the property boundary and many of those homes are at risk, particularly those with termite food available such as untreated wood and wood products. A benefit of tiles is that they are immune to these highly destructive pests which the Australian Institute of Architects suggests attacked 130,000 Australian homes in a year, with estimates of $1.5 billion in damage.
4They don’t absorb or emit odours: Flooring takes the brunt of food and liquid spills, muddy footy boots and animal accidents, resulting in uninvited odours despite the best cleaning efforts. For some flooring choices, such as wood, high humidity and water can produce a musty smell, particularly when the room receives no ventilation or natural sunlight. Carpet, timber and vinyl flooring are all like a big sponge – they absorb odour like a sponge absorbs water, even when sealed. Non-porous or impervious flooring such as glazed porcelain and ceramic tiles do not absorb soils or moisture.

They are water resistant:

5It is not just the wet areas of the home, such as bathrooms and kitchens that are likely to get liquid on them. Kids, pets and parties are among the spill inducing scenarios that can see the lounge room, dining room and bedroom floors become soaked – potentially having long term effect on the floor. Then there are always wet feet from a swim at the pool or beach, which are unavoidable during the summer months. Former Block-heads Simon and Shannon Vos, who, when not running their design and construction business, love getting out in the surf year-round. They say that while most flooring will absorb moisture, tiles are the ideal waterproof flooring. “The tile’s durable glaze on top of the surface does not let liquid seep through,” says Simon. “Tiles are virtually impenetrable and will not let liquids soak in, allowing for easy maintenance and worry-free cleaning,” says Shannon.

Each January, Beaumont Tiles is privileged to present ‘Trending’ to a range of media and design professionals. The yearly event is a snapshot of the hottest predicted tile and bathroomware trends, as well as technological advancements for the upcoming year. This year’s event was held at the Queen Victoria building, Sydney, a stunning backdrop with pastel pinks and marbles befitting the trending themes.
A result of carefully analysing industry and consumer insights from both local and global perspectives; together with attendance to the worlds largest tile design exhibitions, and in conjunction with style forecasts from industry trend leaders such as SCOUT, the Beaumonts team forecast the most relevant products for each of the retail, residential and commercial sectors.
This year was particularly significant for Beaumont Tiles celebrating 60 years. And so, the show began with a treat for guests, taking them down tile trend memory lane and the journey of Beaumonts over the past 60 years.

When R J Beaumont founded Beaumont Tiles with a single store in Adelaide, unglazed mosaic floor tiles were the Aussie go to for all bathroom design. Fast forward six decades and tile selections have notably shifted to embrace colour, texture, size and pattern. The styles and technologies that Beaumont’s has introduced to Australia has meant that everyone from mum and dad DIYers right through to commercial builders have had easy access to the latest advancements in products that make their dream projects simple to achieve. Recent examples of this are Beaumonts exclusive slab tiles sized up to 3-metre tiles, in-store Exclusive Visualiser, InstaLay underlay and Microtec tile technologies. And it is this continued push for innovation that you can see reflected in Beaumonts ‘trends to watch’ of 2020.
At the media event, the six styles to watch in 2020 were revealed. Expect to see your favourite tiles of the year inspired by some of these key elements:
Unearthed Life
Worn and treasured, Unearthed Life reflects people’s desire to explore the purity of objects. Think unfinished materials and rustic textures, misshapen ceramics and an open celebration of imperfection.
Referenced Life
Lovers of luxury from every era will be in their element with Referenced Life. Referenced motifs from art deco, Bauhaus, 40s, 70s and soul are all blurred to create a soft medley of iconic design notes that is warm and inviting in appearance.
Foraged Life
Eclectic and creative, Foraged Life takes elements from both Scandinavian and Russian design, blending them into an organic wood-like setting. Earthy tones, with a casual and relaxed aura that is eclectic and creative, are the best way to achieve this look.

Life Kind
Mass consumption is ebbing, and in its place is a paring back of our need to acquire unnecessary items and taking a more mindful approach. From this the term ‘slow-sumption’ has been coined, and Life Kind reflects this broader social consciousness towards responsible living.
Hybrid Life
Online and offline, urban and coastal – as Australians our lives have blurred, worlds collide and shift the way we engage with spaces and each other. These experiences, observations and interactions are creating forward-thinking spaces, and Hybrid Life is the design interpretation of this.
Life Agenda
Life Agenda is an incredible hierarchy of elements spanning handwoven cloth textures, romantic timber patinas, rich colour pallets of deep blues, burgundy and bronze. Then contrasted with pops of grey and green.
