Q&A with Chris Schneider Managing Director, National Ceramic Industries Australia National Ceramic Industries Australia (NCIA) is located in the New South Wales Hunter Valley region. NCIA produced its first tile in March 2004 and is the largest producer of ceramic tiles in Australia. NCIA source all materials that go into making the tile body from Australia, with raw materials sourced from NSW and Victoria. They employ 60 staff directly and benefit many more indirectly. NCIA are especially passionate about giving back to the community. They partner with a number of community programs, which are valued by individuals working for NCIA or through relationships with suppliers and customers. In recent times they have contributed or partnered with: ◊ Allambi Care ◊ Ronald McDonald House ◊ Durri Aboriginal water appeal ◊ Mark Hughes Foundation ◊ Westpac Helicopter ◊ Women’s Walk for Cancer ◊ Cancer Council NCIA are also committed to lessening their manufacturing impacts on the environment, employing multiple sustainability initiatives such as recycling all water on site; A 1MW roof mounted solar system, which provides electricity to the factory during daytime, and recycling all waste tiles. Along with other innovative processes such as cahjpturing the steam released from the factory and converting it to water, and recycling exhaust heat from the kilns and transferring this heat to other areas to reduce carbon emissons. 10

Chris Schneider has been the Managing Director at NCIA for 8 years. We asked him about some of his favourites: What is your personal favourite product from your range? I am most proud of the Belga range we developed from a brief from Beaumont Tiles. It is a hybrid cement and stone look tile that comes in a variety of colours. It was designed specifically with the Australian market in mind, and it turned out to be a huge hit. In partnership with Beaumont Tiles we have made the Belga range the Number 1 selling tiles range in Australia, with Belga Grey currently the most popular. So it seems it is Australia’s favourite too! Favourite project you have seen NCIA products used in? Having just finished building a house I am going to be a bit biased and say my own home. It was important for me to use NCIA tiles in my home as I truly believe we make a great product in regard to design and quality. To complement the NCIA tiles I also used some subway tiles and penny tiles from the Beaumont Range. Favourite part about working with Beaumont Tiles? It’s nice to feel I can always rely on Beaumont Tiles for continued partnership and support. The relationship never strays and we are continually communicating. We have enjoyed some successful collaborations on ranges and successfully implemented initiatives to benefit both Beaumont Tiles and NCIA. Then there’s the conferences, store visits and seeing our tiles getting featured on TV shows and BT advertisements that still give us a thrill. What does the future hold for NCIA? The future is bright for NCIA. We have plans to be bigger and better, which includes increasing production capacity which would facilitate new tile sizes, new technology and increasing our range.

Sloped or uneven surfaces require the operational flexibility of pedestal supports to create an even foundation. Celebrating 60 years in surreal times As we all navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and global challenges associated

with it, it helps to remember that ebbs and flows occur throughout life and history. Beaumont Tiles founder, Ray Beaumont penned ‘Life’s Been Interesting: Memoirs and reflections on my life’. The following excerpts from his memoir recounts both his personal and professional life. The trials and tribulations, and the broader social, economic, political and technological developments that had to be overcome, to become Australia’s biggest and best tile retailer. It conveys inspiration for each of us to hang in there through the tough times to become stronger, smarter and better individuals and businesses.

However, looking further ahead, I can only do so with optimism because of the many opportunities available. Whilst to progress one must look to the future, it is wise to pause long enough to enjoy and appreciate the present and past. First and foremost, is my wonderful family. Verna has been a lovely wife and mother and after 48 years we are still lovers, and are both very proud of our boys and love each of them dearly. Our daughters-in-law are lovely too and each of the grandchildren is very special and as they grow up, we follow with keen interest their various activities and plans for the future.

I have had the pleasure of having several very nice cars in recent years which have been an added bonus and Verna has had her own car for many years (Jaguars are my favourite). During the last few years if not overseas, we have spent the worst of the winter months in Queensland to escape the cold in Adelaide. I am grateful, and I guess Verna shares my sentiments, to have enjoyed many happy times together and although like everyone, we had our hardships, our measures of success have contributed to some of our enjoyment. “Should anyone consider me to have been successful and asked for my recipe, the only one I could give would be – hard work, ambition, initiative and being prepared to ‘have a go’. Any special abilities? None!” The happenings of 75 years would fill many volumes if recorded in detail, but a few things that come to mind are: the great depression which meant hardship and destitution for many people for some years. The mechanical and electronic revolutions and the 2nd World War, which affected many people in different ways. Then there was the home shortage and building boom, the migration scheme, the industrial revolution, the beginning of the erection of high-rise buildings, the improved planes and cars, the introduction of double decker buses, television, tractors replacing horses, cars replacing carts and the demise of the steam train. Medical history was made in many ways including micro-surgery and new vaccines. Diesel fuel replaces steam power and one which may not even be repeated was landing a man on the moon. There was the bombing of Darwin, the midget submarine attack in Sydney Harbour, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Darwin cyclone, severe droughts and bushfires, the introduction of rock music and casual attitudes to dress and to life generally.

In the home things changed also. The drip safe was replaced by the ice chest which was replaced by the refrigerator. The wood copper was made redundant by the electric washing machine and the electric iron replaced the box iron. The chip bath-heater was superseded by gas or electricity, the clothes line gave way to the Hills Hoist, the hand lawn mower was replaced by a rotary, the treadle sewing machine was made redundant also, even the tea towel gave way to the dishwasher. Many other electrical devices came on to the market over a comparatively few years and were readily accepted. There have been political crises, including the dismissal of Whitlam, the drowning of Harold Holt and the Dunstan years. Then there have been sporting greats who brought honour and respect to our country such as Bradman, Laver, Rosewall, Sedgeman, Newcombe, Marjorie Jackson and Tracey Wickham. Recent times have seen the introduction of the metric conversion and the introduction of computers into most types of business has made a real impact in various ways.

While underfloor heating is readily available for most flooring choices, its effectiveness depends on the thermal conductivity of the flooring material. Good conductivity ensures the floor heats up quicker, gives off more heat and is more efficient to run. This makes tiles the best flooring to use with under tile heating.

It’s affordable It is cheaper than most people think – a kit suitable for a bathroom starts at around $499, all inclusive and for a large family room, it runs from about $1200 – but the system will pay for itself in energy savings.

Do-it-yourself and save Laying an under tile heating system can be a DIY job with an electrician only required for installation of the thermostat. Tiles must be laid with adequate expansion joints in-between to allow for expansion to prevent cracking. But it’s important to make a decision early if you’re building a new home or renovating because you need to lay the heating element underneath your tiles. The cable is covered by a 10-year warranty and in the unlikely event of a fault, the damage is easy to find and fixing it doesn’t require ripping up the floor.
