Confessions of a famous face… Rosanna Davison

By Linda Pototzki

This month’s Irish beauty queen has a picture-perfect smile and a Barbie doll silhouette that us mere mortals idolise. But don’t let her looks fool you, she is not just a pretty face. This 2003 Miss World heavyweight has not one but two cookery books under her belt and is patiently awaiting the results of her Master’s in Nutrition “The more letters I get after my name, the better,” she says, with a soft laugh. Our beauty columnist Linda Pototzki delves into Rosanna Davison’s beauty bag of tips and tricks and learns what goes into maintaining a model-worthy physique, glowing skin and how she keeps those staple golden locks in tip-top condition as well as getting the down low on her "hero" granny. At the time of writing this piece, this No.1 bestselling author Eat Yourself Beautiful and Eat Yourself Fit notes her recent return from accompanying her beau, Wesley, from his casino business trip in Latvia.

Morning The stunning Mrs Davison rises from her chambers and preps her skin for the day adopting an admirable buy-Irish mentality. She commences her beauty regimen with a “no-product” cleanse reaching for her trusty Cleanse Off Mitt (The Skin Nerd, €5.95), a Celtic hyaluronic serum with the Pestle and Mortar Pure Hyaluronic Serum (Cloud 10 Beauty, €42.95) as the flavour of the moment and then vows to faithfully using factor 50 or IMAGE Skincare Prevention+ Daily Matte Moisturiser SPF32 (The Skin Nerd, €46) each day. “My mum taught me years ago to use an SPF. So, I try and remember to put it down my neck and even on my chest if I am wearing a top that shows skin on my chest,” she confesses. In her car, Rosanna keeps La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Ultra Light Fluid SPF50+ (Look Fantastic, €19.45) on guard to shield her hands when driving in the summer months.

Night Before the day draws to a close for our leading lady, she double cleanses with Urban Decay Meltdown Makeup Remover (Debenhams, €30). This is followed by applying MD Formulations Facial Cleanser with Glycolic Acid (Amazon) and leaves for a few minutes before removing as a second cleanse. But it’s not all top shelf lotions and potions for this former Playboy pin-up, as she admits to using a supermarket branded exfoliator. “About three times a week I often use Simple Kind to Skin Smoothing Facial Scrub (Boots, €3.33 – reduced at the time of writing) and I would often add that to my cleanser so you get an exfoliating/cleansing, 2-in-1 kind of thing.” Rosanna completes her nightly regimen with either Pestle and Mortar Pure Hyaluronic Serum (Cloud 10 Beauty, €42.95) or Cosmedix Elite Serum 24 (Strawberrynet, €102.50) retinol cream, before luxuriating in a thick cream or a hydrating oil like the Trilogy Rosehip Oil (Cloud 10 Beauty, €22.95). But what about the peepers, I hear you say Dear Reader? “I don't really use an eye cream. I tend to cover the oil all over my face,” she says. Thus, she feels an eye cream is not required. Interesting.

Facial

Make Up

Rosanna’s facial workout consists of a trip to her nearby Killiney Health & Beauty Salon (at the Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel, €100) for an IPL Skin Rejuvenation facial every 6-8 weeks in the winter months.

Now that the skin is prepped and primed, we dig deeper into the bathroom cabinet to uncover Rosanna’s staple makeup items. She cautions that her routine varies depending on the day, if she is working then it’s always a full-face, going out on a Saturday night make-up vibe.

“I really, really like getting IPL. It really stimulates the collagen on your face, it minimises any source of pigmentation you might get in the sun, redness and blemishes,” she says. “So, despite wearing layers of factor 50, I will still get a bit of pigmentation if I am away [on sun holidays]. It's painful but it is over quite quickly." Then when the facade is feeling parched and in need of some extra TLC then a Hydra-facial (Beacon Face and Dermatology Clinic) is her go-to. “I go there when I feel like indulging myself or I feel like I want a treat,” she confides.

Beauty Supplements Rosanna is a strong believer in feeding the beauty regimen from the inside. She swears that by nourishing her body with wholesome foods, working out, drinking 3 litres of water per day, keeping stress levels at bay and ensuring to catch enough Z’s trumps the powers of any magical skincare emulsions or miracle supplements. “Skincare obviously has a place but I don't find it as effective as lifestyle measures for looking and feeling good.” However the Udo’s Choice advocate swears by taking Super8 Microbiotics (Nourish, €25.99), Altrient Liposomal Vitamin C (Nourish, €47.95), Better You’s Dlux Vitamin D 3000 (Nourish, €6.95) and Boost Vitamin B12 Oral Spray B12 (Nourish, €11.75), Nordic Naturals Algae Omega (Nourish, €28.99) followed by the Advanced Nutrition Programme’s Skin Vit A+ (Treat Your Skin, €9.90) and Skin Antioxidant (Zest Beauty, €31.32).

Currently varying between two primers with Rosanna chooses cult favourite MAC Strobe Cream (Brown Thomas, €34) as a primer/ shimmer under the make-up giving a healthy glow to the skin. She also likes the PS... Matte Primer (Penneys, €4) when in need of a matte finish before applying makeup. There is one foundation that’s guaranteed a longstanding spot in the Dublin native's make-up bag and confesses to using MAC Studio Fix Fluid Foundation SPF 15, shade NC40 (Brown Thomas, €32) for years due to its extraordinary staying power. On more laid back days of running errands, going to the shops or the gym, Rosanna enjoys Note Cosmetics BB Cream, shade BB02 (Meaghers Pharmacy, €11.95) She switches between BB creams depending on the seasons. “I am sure like a lot of people, my skin tends to be a bit dryer in the winter with the central heating on.” Rosanna sculpts her visage for the day using MAC Mineralize Skinfinish, cheeky bronze (Brown Thomas, €31.50) for day time but then for opts for a deeper bronzer for the night-time with the Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze Glow, fair to medium (Arnotts, €65). For a glow, the highlighter Sleek Highlighter Palette, Solstice (Littlewoods, €11.99) is a hot favourite. She also uses the JLOXINGLOT Livin The Highlight Illuminator, shade Radiant (Inglot, €24). “It's like an illuminator for your face, eyes and body. The pigment is really nice so I use that and the highlighter when I am going out. You can use it on your body or in the corners of your eyes as well.” With taming and applying a full set of Russian eyelash extensions, “as curly, long and thick as possible” every five weeks (Up to My Eyes in Greystones, €120) our brown eyed girl tends to use Urban Decay Troublemaker Mascara (Debenhams, €23.50) on her lower lashes. Rimmel Exaggerate (Boots, €5.49) has always been a favourite for the Queen of the cat-eyed liquid liner. On the smackers, Rosanna puckers-up to soft pinks and beige lipsticks and glosses, and at the moment, Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Bitch Perfect (Arnotts, €32) lipstick is the top favourite.

Workout The health guru’s workout regime keeps her body famously trim. And yes, each one of those abs are well-earned aiming for circa 5-6 days of sweat sessions per week. Rosanna enlists the help of Trainer Jessie Kavanagh (Bikini Body), 3 times a week for 30-minute weight training sessions. Then, heads to her local Pilates class (Pilates Classes Dublin: Pilates Plus Dublin, €11 per class) a couple of times a week to do some stretching and chisel away at those oblique’s. And that’s not all. She laughs: “We have a gym at home. It’s probably terrible that I don't use it that much. I like going somewhere and being told what to do for 30 minutes or an hour. But I do try and get up in the morning and do a bit of cardio about three or four times a week in the gym at home because I have no excuse when it's just downstairs.” Easy, peasy!

Hair The blonde beauty concedes that she has been going to Ceira Lambert Hair Consultancy in Shankill (Dublin) for years to tame her tresses. She insists on getting her colour done every five weeks and her Gold Fever extensions every three-four months. Admitting to washing her hair every two or three days using Keune or Pureology, Rosanna lashes on Pureology Hydrate Colour Care Shampoo (Look Fantastic, €14.45) once a week to banish any sign of brassiness and to keep her mane looking fresh. After showering, a Keune So Pure Natural Balance Moroccan Argan Oil (Amazon, approx. €28.10) is up, finishing with Redken Extreme Anti-Snap Treatment (Look Fantastic, €17.45) to prevent breakage.

Career The model-turned-nutritionist proves she has brains and beauty by the bucket-load and is a “huge” believer in education. The hard-working daughter of Lady in Red singer/songwriter Chris De Burgh devoted the last year studying for her Master’s Degree in Nutrition. “I am still waiting on the results so I am not completely there yet but hopefully,” she says. “ I am kind of superstitious on not wanting to say too much until I get over it,” she says laughing. “It was intense.” The course was full-time for a year and she found it “really, really maddening”. “But I think there's no better feeling than getting through something that is particularly maddening and takes you out of your comfort zone.” Rosanna offers advice for those hopefuls who want to break into the beauty industry. Perseverance, self-belief and selfconfidence are a must. Equality can be an issue, she advises. “As women, it is important to realise that not everything is equal,” she says. “I certainly found that coming from the beauty pageant industry years ago and the modelling industry it has become maybe more of a challenge to be taken seriously in more areas.” That is one of the reasons she was determined to get her master’s degree.

Inspiration Rather than naming the current 'it' celebrity icon, Rosanna a woman of family values tends to look closer to home for inspiration. The inspirational influence in her life is a former spy, jockey and hotelier. That is her 93-year-old granny from Wexford. Still driving and still telling stories, an avid rugby fan and closely following the career of Conor McGregor, Rosanna’s grandmother keeps the family entertained with tales of life throughout the decades, for almost a century. “She is my hero. She had an amazing life. The great thing is she still remembers all her stories from years ago. So, I just spend hours quizzing her about her favourite place to live or her favourite decade and all the things she has done.” That lady sounds like a true inspiration, indeed.

Meet Lisa Creative Stylist, Long Island New York Hi, my name is Lisa Mayo. I have been a licensed hair artist for 11 years in Long Island, New York , where I was born and raised. I specialize in creative color, balayage and styling. I am also a barber apprentice. I always had a passion for hair and through the years have also developed a love for educating. I have recently put a lot of work into branding myself especially on social media, which I’ve really enjoyed because I can see the growth in myself and also in other hair artists. In order for growth to happen, you have to step out of your comfort zone. Once you conquer those fears, new opportunities will open up and that is one of my favorite topics to share. Throughout my years behind the chair and also outside of work, I have constantly pushed myself to do things I’m not comfortable with and love sharing my journey in hopes to help inspire others. The beauty industry is continuously changing and thats what makes it such an exciting field to be in. I find keeping up with education, and also sharing your knowledge with others keeps a nice momentum of motivation and determination. It gives you the ability to move forward and never get stale. Lets face it every now and then we become bored and if we don’t try something new we won’t be able to deliver what our clients want and I know I personally love seeing my clients leave feeling happy, confident and beautiful! With that, I encourage whoever is reading this to really get out there and challenge yourself and watch how new opportunities will unfold for you!

The Fashion Edit Spring 2019 By Eider Leite, Personal & Professional Stylist Creating a capsule wardrobe for yourself is a very worthwhile exercise. To have a complete wardrobe full of versatile pieces, start with approximately 15 neutral pieces of clothing so that you are not limited by the seasons. If you are a fan of vibrant colours, try adding a splash of colour to your outfit through your choice of accessories. Since spring is on the horizon, you can try adding some lighter toned coloured accessories - think light blue, rose or any pastels to give your outfit a pop of freshness. Finally, layering is an underrated way to transform an outwardly simple outfit into something that is memorable, visually interesting, practical, and perfect for this wild weather we’ve been having!

To create your perfect capsule wardrobe, you should start with two dresses, three tops, three bottoms, one jacket, three pairs of shoes, and four accessories. I recommend you start from a base of neutrals and add one or two accent colours. The key is to have all the pieces in the capsule working in harmony with one another. From your 15 pieces you can always add more items, however the discipline of only adding pieces that work with existing pieces means that you will invest in pieces that work with your lifestyle. After all, putting together a capsule wardrobe is not about buying everything new, it is about working with existing pieces from your wardrobe and addressing any gaps that you might discover.

For a fresh summer workwear wardrobe, you must include soft shades with a few pops of colour to give that summer freshness. Lightweight jackets not only finish a work wear outfit, but provide much needed warmth in air-conditioned offices. Keep your accessories to a minimum.

If you combine compatible capsules, you get more outfit combinations. Two mini-capsules of 15 items each will create 78+ outfits combinations when styled correctly, so investing in good quality pieces that are versatile is key for a strong and sophisticated wardrobe.

Meet Nicola

Managing Director at Chleo Enterprises This month we caught up with Nicola Mealia, Managing Director of Chleo Enterprises to hear about her company, the brands she represents and particularly, focusing on one of the hottest make-up brands right now ARTDECO! The Company was founded by her Mum, Katharine Hurley, just over 30 years ago. They are a 2nd generation family business managed by Nicola and Richard her brother as Finance Director. They are a leading premium beauty distributor and supply into Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Great Britain. They offer their clients unparalleled expertise and a thoughtfully curated selection of the most exclusive brands. Nicola states ‘’We carefully assess every item we stock, and we only sell products that we truly believe in. The brands that we choose to carry are those that we, throughout our decades in the field, have remained most impressed with.’’ When and how did your career in the beauty sector begin? I grew up in this industry! Throughout my school years I spent holidays helping out in the business whenever and wherever I could. I remember coming back from Irish College to find I had to go back to sharing a room with my sister and my room had been turned into a mini stockroom. This was the very beginning! I clearly remember myself and my sister joining my Mum on a trip around the country with Dr Danne King. He always amazed me with his stories and knowledge. My parents always said if I wanted to be involved in the business I had to go and do my own thing first and bring something into the business. Nothing was handed to any of us on a plate. With a passion for art and design, I followed my dream and did a degree in Fashion Design. I spent a number of years in London after that as a Buyer with The Burton Group who at that time owned Debenhams and TopShop to name but a few. While I was in London a position came up in Chleo for a Sales Rep., I asked to be given a chance and I have never looked back. I covered the whole country for all of the brands and loved it. I worked with my Mum for a number of years before she retired. I took over from her as MD about 16 years ago and worked with my husband for about 10 years. He left the business a few years ago to follow his passion for sports science and my brother Richard joined the team about 5 years ago now.

What is unique about Chleo Enterprises? We are a family business and pride ourselves on our family values. We have a really close team with many of our staff with us for five to ten years. We have a hugely loyal customer base because we look after them. We know that we would not have a business without our customers. We have a fabulous portfolio of brands and we have been loyal to them from the beginning; Sothys, ARTDECO, Misslyn, DMK and Perron Rigot. They are all family businesses too with most of them now also 2nd generation. ARTDECO in particular has had a brand new image, tell us more. ARTDECO as a brand really evolved during 2018 with the new brand image really coming through towards the end of last year. Founded in 1985, the ARTDECO Group is 100% owned by Helmut Baurecht and his son Matthias Baurecht. The ARTDECO Group own seven brands, including Misslyn and Claudia Schiffer Makeup. ARTDECO is their no. 1 brand and is sold world-wide. ARTDECO celebrates luxury you can afford. The new brand image is based on inspiration and individuality and aligns the cosmetics label with its customers’ strong sense of self-confidence. The brand is staying true to its recipe for success, offering top-quality cosmetics at affordable prices. ARTDECO wants to integrate this affordable luxury into everyday use. With a new brand essence and new brand values, the company is adapting its entire image to identify with the latest trends. What do you love about this brand? I love the customisable system – our refillable magnetic palettes where you can create your own eyeshadow/blusher palette. It is economical, practical and you choose the shades that you want. I have so many palettes that are pre-filled and I have only used half of them. With this system, when one colour is finished you can pop it out and replace it with another colour, with 120 shades to choose from! ARTDECO were the first brand in the world to create this system and it has been copied by many brands since. It is a brand icon! ARTDECO offers amazing colour, luxurious textures in the best quality at affordable prices.

What type of business would take on ARTDECCO? ARTDECO is ideal for a Beauty Salon, Pharmacy or a Department store. The products are professional and ideal for the trained Beauty Therapist or Makeup Artist. We have special products like our Camouflage Cream for high coverage and we also have a unique range of different foundations and powders in numerous shades so that you can create a perfect complexion to suit all individual needs. ARTDECO is also a retail brand sold in some of the biggest perfumery chains in the world. Our special products can offer real added value and an additional finishing touch to other international premium brands.

Regarding our other brands, Misslyn has recently launched in 6 Primark stores in the Ireland and 11 in the UK. This is such an exciting opportunity for the brand. Sothys will always stay loyal to the Beauty Salon and Spa market and we are really excited to have partnered with Parknasilla Spa and Resort in 2018. DMK is one of our fastest growing brands at the minute with new Clinics opening every month. DMK is the world leader in Paramedical Skin Revision. DMK rebuilds skin and rebuilds lives. As you can see we are very busy with lots of exciting projects! What is the most important thing you have learned in business?

What support do you offer to your customers? We offer a tailored key account service to our customers. We offer a high level of training in product and sales. Training is key and the ones that keep themselves up to speed with the latest techniques and trends are the ones who are successful. The world of makeup is highly competitive, so training is essential. We can offer a unique individual assortment selection to our customers. Our displays are designed to be flexible, they are not pre-filled. A customer is 100% involved in the product and colour choice and opening orders can be adapted as required. This is a huge advantage we have over other brands. We have opening orders at all levels and opportunities to upgrade your stand as your business grows. We have our B2B on-line ordering system where only our customers have access. All product and new collections are displayed here and it is really easy to shop. We also support with a 360 degree approach to marketing. Through media campaigns, content marketing, POS material, events or social media – combining print and a high focus on digital – the brand experience for ARTDECO is built to create a long-term engagement with our customers.

To be fair and honest. I would never ask someone to do something I would never do myself. It is all about family values. We are a team in here and we all support each other. We pride ourselves in the way we treat our customers. You don’t have a business without your customers. What is your typical week like? Oh, where do I start! We start the day with a quick team meeting, this has proven invaluable in keeping things running smoothly in the office. Mondays are about catching up with my Sales Team in the UK and Ireland. After that, I could be working on a proposal for a new account, planning a new launch or event, dealing with our PR companies, and generally looking for new ways of growing the business. I do quite a bit of travel back and forth to the UK. My passion is sales, I love talking to our customers or potential customers. It is where I get the biggest buzz. I am lucky to do a job I love….well most of the time!

What are your future plans for your business? Our future plans are to continue to develop and build the brands we have. We were approached by the ARTDECO Group a few years ago and asked if we would consider taking over the distribution for ARTDECO into the UK. We were very proud to be offered this opportunity and have huge plans for ARTDECO in this market.

APPRENTICE STAR LAUNCHES NORTHERN IRELAND’S FIRST MAKEUP & BEAUTY AWARDS Apprentice star Grainne McCoy is gearing up for the launch of Northern Ireland’s first Makeup & Beauty Awards on Sunday 7 April. Nominations from the public have been received with the aim to recognise and applaud a new class of quality talent in Northern Ireland, celebrating the success and exemplary work within this thriving creative industry.

The Makeup & Beauty Awards wants to shed light on those creatives who work tirelessly behind the scenes, honouring the work of those in the forgotten sectors, including makeup artistry, beauticians, online influencers, nail technicians and much more. Hosted by Grainne, along with legendary Belfast Drag Queen Lady Portia, the awards will be taking place in the iconic Titanic Building, Belfast. The decadent blacktie awards will include a red-carpet champagne reception, formal dinner, awards ceremony and afterparty with an appearance from the popular Sugartown Road Band. Grainne explained her motivation for the awards ceremony saying: “We’ve had huge growth across Ireland in recent years, and there just isn’t enough opportunity for them to be recognised and acknowledged. There’s an abundance of talented creatives not being recognised in the NI Makeup and Beauty Community and I wanted to shine a light on those people. “The Makeup and Beauty industry is at its peak now. Professional work is often celebrated, but without recognition in the form awards. This is something that I am passionate about transforming – we need to ensure these artists and creatives are celebrated, just like those in other industries would be.” Finalists have now been announced and feature a range of categories including Bridal Makeup Artist of the Year, Online Influencer of The Year – Makeup & Beauty, Theatrical & Media Makeup Artist of The Year and Makeup & Beauty Business Person Of The Year. Claire Maree Walsh Beauty Therapist at Elysium, Day Spa & Laser Clinic, Moycullen, Galway. I have started my journey at Elysium as trainee therapist in October 2017. As part of my Beauty Therapy Course in Galway Technical Institute I was required to complete 4 weeks of work experience in a salon/ spa environment. I chose Elysium, because of its great reputation as being one of the best in the country and I had heard their emphasis on continually training and up-skilling their therapists was second to none. Initially I remember feeling a little intimidated at joining such a highly skilled team but after a few weeks I felt right a t home as all the girls were so lovely and took time to show me the ropes! During my work experience I observed how the other therapists spoke and dealt so professionally with their clients and my training started on perfecting the basics before I gradually worked my way up continually adding new treatments as my confidence and techniques improved. Valerie and the team really invested a lot of time teaching and showing me techniques to improve what I was learning in collage and allowed me the time to develop. This really helped to improve my confidence with clients and reduce any nerves during practical exams. Valerie rewarded my work ethic and commitment by sending me on training courses that I wanted to take part on – at this stage I was also delighted to be asked to become a full-time employee as soon as I completed my final exams. I also worked full time during my time off from collage and my wages increases with my new-found skills thanks to both in house and external training: Lycon Waxing Threading Spray Tanning Shellac / manis/ pedis Indian Head Massage Dermalux Yon Ka SkinCeuticals AlumierMD IMAGE Skincare Candela Laser Hair removal My first external training was a 3-day Level 1 Yon Ka training course I took part in Dublin. I adore the products and really enjoy performing the facials. All my travel, training and accommodation was paid for as a thank you for my work ethic and commitment to progressing my role within Elysium. Since then Valerie also organised a trainer to come from the UK to train us all in Candela Laser Hair removal and I was delighted to take part in that – as most therapists would have to wait years to do such advanced training. Valerie also had the head trainer from the UK travel to the clinic to do a 2-day in-house training session in AlumierMD, we have also had several training sessions with the SkinCeuticals rep. The most recent training session was probably my favourite with IMAGE Skincare, again Valerie shut the clinic down for 2 days so we could all be certified in Level 1 and Level 2… this really was the highlight of the year for me. Elysium therapists have a reputation of being the best in the business and I feel so lucky to have started my career here as I have learned so much;

I feel like I have achieved so much in such short period of time, my confidence has grown with my skill set and I feel I have become a professional therapist, but more importantly an ‘Elysium therapist’. I will finish my 2nd year course completing my Diploma in Beauty and Body Therapies CIDESCO, CIBTAC, ITEC in May 2019 and really looking forward to working at Elysium full time and developing my skills even further. Elysium and Valerie have given me once in a life time opportunity to develop my skills in a really lovely working environment. It has been hard work but so rewarding and Valerie and the team have been amazing to work with – I really feel privileged to be part of the Elysium team. Elysium Day Spa & Laser Clinic are now hiring Senior and Junior Beauty Therapists, Spa Therapists and Advanced Skincare Specialist. Legally Speaking WHAT DOES ADMINISTERING AN ESTATE MEAN?

If you make a will, your executors have the job of sorting out your estate. If there’s no will, usually your next of kin does this. They can instruct your solicitor to deal with matters on their behalf and to advise them correctly. 1. Extracting a grant of probate in order to share your estate out or letters of administration, if there is no will 2. Identifying your assets and your debts at the time of your death 3. Filing a return to HMRC or Revenue, claiming reliefs against Inheritance Tax or Capital Acquisition Tax 4. Identifying beneficiaries who will inherit 5. If necessary, arranging for the sale of assets such as property It can be helpful to keep all your financial documents in one safe place and tell someone where this is. This can make it easier for your executors to find all the information they need after you have died.

A grant of probate or letters of administration is a certificate which shows the amount you owned and owed when you died. Typically your estate can’t be given to your beneficiaries until a certificate has been granted. Your executors or personal representatives’ names will be on the certificate. The certificate allows them to sell or transfer your estate, so that it can be distributed according to your will. If you don’t have a will, your estate will be distributed according to the rules of intestacy. If the estate is straightforward, getting probate may only take a few weeks. But in more complicated cases it can take many months or longer. If the estate is straightforward, getting probate may only take a few months. But in more complicated cases it can take much longer. This might happen if: 1. The estate is made up of cash and personal belongings only (and the cash is below a certain limit) 2. Money or property are held jointly (as joint tenants or with a survivorship destination). 3. A pay out from life insurance held in trust for beneficiaries. 4. A lump sum or income from a pension scheme where you have chosen who should receive it 5. Up to £10,000 in your Credit Union account in the North of Ireland or €23,000 in the South of Ireland as long as you have completed a nomination form, these will go straight to your beneficiaries after your death. For help on sorting out an estate and dealing with inheritance tax or capital acquisition tax particularly where there are assets in both Northern and Southern Ireland, call Luke Curran & Co. 5 shower routines to have glowing skin Showering can be a very straightforward ordinary process, or you can employ a ritual that transports your skin and hair out of the ordinary to a fantastic place where you are positively radiant! Just follow these 5 simple steps and your skin will positively glow.

1.

Brush your body before showering – Did you know that your skin is your biggest organ? You might already brush your hair before showering, but if you haven’t been brushing your skin, you are missing out on a chance to boost your circulation whilst promoting lymph drainage. Use a brush with soft bristles that gives a very gentle pre-show exfoliation. Always brush towards your heart, starting from the extremities (feet, legs, hands, arms and then body).

2.

Exfoliate with oil-based sugar scrub – Give your body a quick wash with your favorite shower soap before using an oil-based sugar scrub to remove stubborn dead skin. We can recommend Rituals sugar scrubs. Again, remember to scrub in the direction of the heart, starting from your lower extremities and working your way upwards.

3.

Use a face cloth to polish - Once you have completed your all over scrub, use a facecloth to remove the residue of sugar scrub. This provides an additional gentle exfoliation that effectively polishes the skin, leaving you silky smooth.

4.

Turn down the temperature – This might sound like a bad idea at the end of a luxurious shower; however, your skin will thank you! Once the water is properly cold, start with rinsing your right leg, and then your left. Next, you should shower your right and left arms before bringing your body under the cold water. Cold showers temporarily tighten skin restricting blood flow. There are many health benefits to cold showers including boosted immunity and improved circulation.

5.

Pat yourself dry with a soft towel – Tumble drying your towels will make them really soft, perfect for patting yourself dry after your luxurious shower. Patting dry versus rubbing dry allows your skin to retain more of its natural oil giving you that beautifully radiant glow.

Cosmoprof 2019 Anita's Insights, MD at The Salon And Spa Co. Beauty expert and entrepreneur, Anita Murray is passionate about beauty, spa & wellness, Anita is an accomplished, entrepreneur, reflexologist, aromatherapist and veteran beauty therapist. Anita frequently brings her distinctive approach and expansive knowledge of beauty to various outlets within the industry. In addition to her role as a contributing beauty expert, Anita is the MD at the award winning Pink Beauty Group. Her roles have spanned from therapist and educator to business development consultant and supply chain manager for some of the world’s leading and most successful and desirable beauty brands, salons and spas. Anita can be reached at The Salon & Spa Co. anita.murray@caci.ie https://www.instagram.com/anitamurray00/ 0035312166693 Over 250,000 beauty spa and wellness professionals descended upon Bologna for Cosmoprof 2019 the world’s largest beauty exhibition for the beauty industry With over 3,000 exhibitors in attendance from over 70 countries! This year’s show was a journey into the cosmetic universe, between past traditions and future avant-garde. Cutting edge technologies, the most innovative products and the biggest trends were on display deriving from the most advanced industry research available.

There was 26 country and group pavilions representing Austria, Belgium, California, Chile, China, France, Germany, Greece, France, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Korea, Latvia, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and the United States. The big trends across all areas was beauty in technology, sustainable beauty, advanced skin diagnosis and advanced tools to achieve optimum skin consultation. My first stop was with ‘Hi Mirror’ the world’s first smart mirror, this is a new device for the professional salon or clinic, with home versions also available. The device will scan your face and assess what’s wrong! It will identify wrinkles, pores, broken capillaries and yes, the mirror is a harsh critic! The smart mirror will then make product recommendations according to the clinics product lines. I also love the professional skin diagnosis equipment from the new cosmeceutical brand we are working with; Skeyndor. The skin smart diagnosis system comes with a Samsung tablet and a portable diagnosis kit which was the most unique device I saw as the 7 essential parameters are incorporated into one single lens.

AWARDS The Cosmoprof awards reward the most innovative beauty products and projects across all sectors of the beauty industry, After a few fun tried and tested exercises my favourites on the shortlist were the Beauty Mask Stones Pret A Porter – Across the world of skincare and beauty products, brands and consumers are turning their attention to solid products that are easily transported, just as easily applied to the face, as well as helpful for reducing the risks of spills and messes. The mask comes in black heart shaped stones with a purifying action and a triangular white stone for hydration. Another winner was the Wabuki Serum an amazing postbiotic serum combining together three innovative concepts in one product: molecular drone technology, freeze dry processing and postbiotics actives. This one is exciting because it tackles the root cause of accelerating aging and other skin issues such as skin barrier function deficiency. COSMOTALKS Cosmotalks treated visitors to some amazing insights and exclusives, with the participation of over 150 international speakers and thought leaders I could write you a book but here are my key takeaways Sustainability is set to become increasingly crucial for consumers and for companies, it is no longer a possibility but an essential element in the salon and spa, green cosmetics and organic are also making a big impact. We have already moved many of our Spa clients onto Scrummi - sustainable and biodegradable towels, ethically made in Europe using certified wood fibres. This plush disposable towel system has actually halved some of my clients laundry bills so it’s a win win! Beauty Tech as we touched off earlier is growing, what is the future of retail? We need to get on board with development opportunities now like digital analytics and strengthen your consumer’s loyalty. Invest in the equipment for your business now. The first industrial revolution was manufacturing, then came technology, digital and we are on the brink of the 4th industrial revolution ‘robotics’ the user experience will be enhanced by augmented reality, we are talking phones and apps with sensors for personalised solutions and product recommendations. COSMOTRENDS Thanks to the prestige acquired in over 50 years of history, Cosmoprof is the trendsetter event for the beauty sector. It is at Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna that leading companies in the sector present their new products and the latest innovations which will influence market trends. Statistics tell us the beauty industry maintained a positive trend +2,1% with figures heading over 11.2 billion euros, impressive!

However like the fairy tale name suggests the results disappear at midnight, fun products to use and play with, they inspire self-expression and offer irresistible sensorial experiences.

Some of the trends included ‘The Cinderella Effect’ beauty products that deliver instant gratification whether that’s in the form of immediately visible skin care results or insta-glam.

My top pick was the self-beauty filler, a patch with crystallized microneedles in pure hyaluronic acid with growth factor, fills in wrinkles and after two hours and et voila; the face is lifted but alas the effect does wears off!

‘Intimate Care’ Ok the jury is out on this one but I couldn’t neglect how large this market had grown this year! Intimate care, up until now is a largely untapped market, it is now emerging as a new category in beauty and wellness, I found products designed for external and internal use, incorporating luxurious formulas, sensorial experiences, and high-quality natural ingredients. Areas included personal cleansing, intimate skin care, products to maintain healthy pH levels, and dedicated grooming regimens. Far from being a source of shame or stigma, intimate care, or ‘self-care’, occupied an elevated positioning on par with premium skin care, boasting elegant packaging and aesthetics that encourage display on bathroom shelves. One of the products that caught my attention was the Lovbod bum mask! Yes a bum mask, this was a product with high performance voluforming technology promoting skin contouring and enhancing the definition of the bottom! The founder Heidi Kim said she wants to break away from the narrow standards of beauty for ‘the perfect body’ and to celebrate and promote our unique beauty health and confidence! I hope I’ve provided you with an interesting overview for what’s set to move the dial this year & Spring herald’s some exciting new beginnings for your business ! Anita X

With a strong focus on holistic wellness, much of the product range available at Simplicité is oncology friendly. During 2018, Simplicité announced that its therapists received training in Cancer Touch Therapy with the Made for Life Foundation in the UK. The course is accredited by the Complementary Medical Association and was developed in association with trained oncology massage teachers and advisors from oncology teams in major UK hospitals. The Made for Life Foundation has supported over 10,000 cancer patients in the last 8 years, treating them with 100% certified organic products in specially designed treatments. The four treatments available in Simplicité in Straffan help cancer patients to disconnect from daily stress and reconnect the body and mind in a tranquil environment. Simplicité owner Emma Keogh said “Before I set up Simplicité, I did not know how difficult it is for cancer patients to access spa treatments. The Cancer Touch Therapy training course from the Made for Life Foundation is a fully accredited 3-day programme which enables qualified beauty and massage therapists to gain a deeper understanding of how to provide cancer patients with adapted, tailored treatments. My team feels very privileged to be able to help people going through and recovering from cancer, a disease which has touched all our lives.” 40,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer in Ireland this year. Many patients say that while happy with their medical treatment, they also need other supports to assist them during this very difficult time in their lives. Simplicité continues to support local cancer charities by supporting local fundraising activities and contributing to significant events such as Daffodil Day. Keeping the Right People in Your Business After you put in the time, effort and investment to hire the best employees possible, you need to retain that talent. Salary, holidays, perks are high on the list of why those great employees took the job, but they are not reasons enough to keep them in your employment for the long haul. Job Satisfaction will increase your employee retention rate. Here are my top 5 strategies you can use to keep the right people in your business: Always greet people by their name, letting them know that you know and value their contributions to the company. Get their input about rules or changes that need to be made on the salon floor. Encourage goal setting and let them make their own choices as often as possible. Make your expectations and goals for the company clear. Be sure you have job descriptions so your employees know what is required of them. If there are changes that need to be made, don’t expect them to learn that by osmosis: instead communicate directly, clearly and regularly. Good employees want to please you, but to do that, they need to know what it is they need to do to make that happen. Create and open and honest work environment. Give feedback on work performed and be willing to listen, really listen with empathy to the concerns of your employees. Chance meetings in the staff room where social greetings are exchanged are good, but do not take the place of actually sitting down face-to-face and discussing work related problems. Always be open and listen to new ideas. Accept suggestions for problem solving. Be available and open when your employees ask for guidance. Never ever let rumors take over – keep your top talent informed about what is happening with the salon. Whenever there are problems or set-backs, communicate this. Provide opportunities to grow and learn, letting your employees know there is room for advancement in your salon. Give challenging and stimulating work. Tap into their passion and allow them to focus their time and energy on exciting projects they can enjoy, as well as the day to day client work. Always let your team members know what career development plans you may have for them and what opportunities are available for them to grow with the salon. Recognise and reward good work. Monetary bonuses are always nice, but recognition of a job well done goes a long way to creating good will and loyalty. Recognition needs to be specific: “good job” is acceptable, but “good job with that colour correction” is better. In order to retain talent, you must make them feel appreciated, respected and worthwhile. Everyone needs to feel their contributions to the business are important. Feedback and praise must be sincere. There are 3 categories for motivating people: -Need for Power -Need for Achievement -Need for Relationships Power People enjoy being in charge. They have a sense of control over the salon and they enjoy making decisions and stepping up to difficult tasks and responsibilities. Achievement motivated people are excited by major goals. They enjoy working hard towards specific targets and feel a rush of success when they achieve them. They love having a sense of mission and purpose. Relationship Motivated People want everyone to get along with everyone else, wanting to be liked and respected. They dislike and avoid conflict. They are the glue that keeps the team together, they mediate, making sure everyone is comfortable and happy.
