Meet Emer McGillian
Exclusive Interview With The Founder Of Skin Kandy My name is Emer Mc McGillion and I have worked in the beauty industry for over 15 years and have extensive experience in different areas of beauty and skin care. I am the founder of Skin Kandy one of Dublin’s leading mobile beauty companies. We offer clients beauty and skin care treatments in the comfort of their own home or office. 1.When and how did your career in the beauty sector begin? I trained in Beauty in 2002 when I was straight out of school. I loved it and had a passion for skin. I went on to work in beauty salons from Ireland to Canada. I specialised in beauty, skin care and laser treatments for several years which greatly developed my knowledge and experience. In 2012 I saw a gap in the market as I didn’t see anyone offering treatments to homes & offices to a 5 star salon standard. I invested in excellent products and a medically graded cosmeceutical skin care line to be able to offer result driven treatments. So over 7 years ago I started my mobile beauty business as I felt I could offer clients something different, the whole package. 2.Explain what is unique about your business? We provide salon treatments in homes and offices all over Dublin. Our clients love the convenience of having treatments done in their home or office. This means they can get professional treatments with a salon feel carried out in a relaxed environment. Companies bring us in to promote well-being to the employees and it always proves to be the most popular event in their calendar year. 3.What are the benefits for therapists starting a career with Skin Kandy? Therapists get the variety of working on their own and also with a team. They have the independence of working flexible hours and in a nice, diverse atmosphere. It can involve people’s homes, one on one, groups of girls having pamper parties, or at corporate events. Everything is supplied, from a branded car to their own kit. 4.What are your future plans for your business? My future plans for Skin Kandy is to keep growing to a larger scale. People’s lives are busier than ever, and they want their beauty treatments to be as accessible as possible without sacrificing time spent in traffic and family time. We’ll be in more companies, which allows staff to have to some very much appreciated, time-out
5.If you could do anything differently in your career life, what would it be? Well, I believe everything happens for a reason and I am where I should be so I don’t look back and wish I could change anything as such but if I had to answer….. it would be to have set up my own business sooner and to have invested in a coach/ mentor at an earlier stage. 6.What is the most important thing you have learned in business? Stay focused on your goal, but be flexible in your approach. Not everything will work out but to believe without doubt that everything is working for me, rather than against me and always take something positive away from your mistakes 7.How do you balance your career and personal life? Always very challenging! I have only recently stopped feeling guilty when I take time off. Having your own business isn’t a job, it’s a way of life! I meditate daily, I read affirmations and motivational books. I exercise and have a business coach/mentor who helps me to stay on track and keep moving forward.

WHERE SEA MEETS SCIENCE Sea Ór present you with an innovative range of dietary supplements, enhancing your beauty and wellbeing from within.
LAUNCHING FEBRUARY 2019 A PREMIUM RANGE OF INNOVATIVE SEAWEED SUPPLEMENTS LAUNCHED BY VOYA’S SISTER COMPANY, SEA ÓR.
THE BRAND
Our sister company VOYA, has been hand harvesting organic seaweed on the west coast of Ireland for over two decades. After witnessing the holistic benefits of seaweed first hand and being passionate about its benefits, Mark and Kira Walton wanted to take our belief in the powers of seaweed to the next level. The Sea Ór concept was born in summer 2014. We knew the power of including seaweed in our diets, however, with its unique taste and texture, we knew not everyone would include it in their diet. The next clear step was to launch a seaweed based supplements range. Our lives today are much more hectic than ever before, enhancing a good diet with supplements can help us on a path to achieve complete wellness. Harnessing the raw powers of the ocean combined with the latest scientific research, Sea Ór is set to be a trail blazer in the global supplements market.
SEA ÓR RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
By the close of 2014 we were working with scientists and nutrition experts to create a range of supplements. These would contain a trademarked seaweed complex using hand harvested seaweed from the west coast of Ireland. In 2017 we employed a resident scientist and nutrition expert to drive Sea Ór’s development forward. Working closely with the world-renowned Nutrition Innovation Centre for Food and Health (NICHE) at Ulster University, Coleraine, our cutting edge R&D focused on reviewing in-depth studies on the various types of seaweeds. This 18-month study reviewed over 300 scientific papers, resulting in one of the most comprehensive reviews ever completed on seaweed and health. We are proud to say this study will be published in a scientific journal in early 2019. To further validate and scientifically test our formulation, we are undergoing a series of double-blind randomised placebo-controlled human intervention studies in conjunction with researchers at NICHE. Preliminary results will be launched summer 2019.
For more information on Sea Ór, please contact the press office at pr@sea-or.com. Product samples and images of each product are available upon request. Owners of Sea Ór Mark and Kira Walton are also available for interview. www.sea-or.com

New Year New You 2019 - Time to get booking in for your Wedding Makeup Trail or just looking to try out a new Glam look? 1. Always start off with a fresh clean face that is cleansed and moisturized really well to keep it fresh and dewy looking from underneath your makeup. 2. I would generally start off with the eyes first- But before I do It’s all about the brows !! Define the brows by using a brow pencil similar colour to the natural brow you are working on then Highlight it underneath to define its shape and if you have fuller brows slightly highlight at the top and brush down into the brow to make it more natural. On my bride she has gorgeous brown almond shaped eyes so I wanted not only to enhance them but to bring the colour of her eye out too so: -. I used gorgeous Mac -Swiss Chocolate across the whole lid to give a warm undertone, -.In the outter corner of the eye I used Tom Ford -Deep Bark Brown to contour the edge. -I used a softer colour of golden bronze on the ball of the eye that added a little sparkle -.To bring out the colour in her eyes and make them bigger I highlighted the inner corner with Mac- Champagne colour- Amber Lights -. I swept across the lash line then with Inglot Black Gel Liner and gave the edge a slight feline flick -. I then added Karaja Lash Design Mascara & finished with Mac individual eyelashes -. Dust and clean away any shadow that has fallen to start your clean base for foundation. 2. I always use a primer/ highlighter depending on the skin type. My bride in this photograph had beautiful olive tone skin so I used MAC Oil Free primer & used Mac Strobe cream to illuminate her skin underneath her foundation. 3.Moving on to her foundation I used one of my favourite foundations from Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk no.7.5 to suit her fabulous sallow complexion. I then used a yellow base lightweight loose powder to set. 4.We all love our contouring and highlighting but on our wedding day and bridal makeup we pull it back a little to give it a more natural effect. So I used a beautiful warm soft peachy Mac- Peaches Blusher to give her cheeks a glow and highlighted above with Mac Mineralize Skinfinish- Soft & Gentle. Then finished overall the face with a dust of Nars Laguna Bronzer. 5.For the classic red lip I used Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Lip Liner & her classic Red Matte Revolution. I then gave a gentle touch of clear gloss to finish. 6. Finish with a fixing spray - one of my favourites is the Mineral Fixing Spray from Mac. YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY MD TRAINER, KRISTINA VISKONTAITE IMAGE SKINCARE VS. IMAGE MD - What is the difference? It’s a minefield out there. Between figuring out not only the best products for your skin but the best skincare line to go with. Here at Image Skincare we have our core skincare line and have recently developed a brand-new skincare line called IMAGE MD. So, what is the difference between the two? IMAGE MD is a skincare line developed by team of plastic surgeons. This is very exciting skin care range that is formulated to correct and prevent all signs of ageing as well as deliver essential nutrition to your skin cells. The advanced delivery systems that are unique to the IMAGE MD line make these products superior. I want very simple routine that prevents aging? IMAGE MD follows our core philosophy of simplicity. We know you are all busy out there. Sometimes we don’t have the time or the disposable income for all the products and treatments under the sun. So, we have the answer for you. Our IMAGE MD core system includes 4 products for an easy and effective 3 step regimen for both morning and night. We believe everyone should have access to affordable and easy to use programmes to feel good in their skin. Vitamin C and Vitamin A – What’s the big deal? Vitamins C and A are your skincare’s dream team. Both vitamins protect your skin from the effects of aging. Vitamin C is an absolute essential for your skincare regime, because as well as being a potent natural antioxidant, it has anti-inflammatory properties, can act as a depigmenting agent and is vital for collagen biosynthesis. Vitamin A in skin care products works by normalising skin functions which equals a correction of all skin conditions, following are just some of the benefits: • Normalises blood flow – taking nutrients and oxygen to the cells. • Helps to reduce the symptoms of rosacea • Increases the rate of wound healing – treats acne scarring • Exfoliates – making skin smooth and even-toned • Repairs the cellular structure of the epidermis – optimising your UV protection • Decreases clustering of melanin granules – so reducing brown spots or pigmentation • Decreases sebum production and thus treats acne brilliantly • Promotes a healthy cellular membrane – improving hydration • Improves hydration both in and around the cell by doing all of the above – decreasing wrinkles!
Explain Retinol and the difference between a professional product to vitamin A you buy in a shop? Incorporating Vitamin, A into your skincare routine is one of the best things you can do for your skin. This is one ingredient with solid re search and proven results behind it. But it can be confusing with all the different forms and uses. There are different forms of Vitamin A raging from retinoic acid (prescrip tion only) to retinol and retinyl pal mitate that can be found in prod ucts over the counter, but the best option is Cosmeceutical retinoids. Vitamin A in cosmeceuticals such as retinol and retinyl palmitate are more concentrated forms with much higher bioavailability, hence greater skin results then from any vitamin A purchased in over the counter products. What are the best products and treatments for acne scarring? Before considering treatment for scaring you first must get rid of any active acne since new breakouts can lead to new acne scars. The best advice we can give to you is to visit clinic that would provide you with in depth skin consultation and based on that, a comprehensive treatment and homecare plan. There are different post acne scars that may need different plan of action but usually multimodalities (chemical peels, IPL, Microneedling) plus home care products containing keratolytic and collagen stimulating ingredients such as salicylic and retinol are a must to achieve best results. Dehydrate skin vs dry skin - what is the difference? Dehydrated skin lacks water and dry skin lacks oil. Dry is a skin type where is dehydrated is a skin condition so even very oily skin can be dehydrated. Dehydrated skin tends to look dull and feel tight. To hydrate something means to increase its water content. In relation to skin care, hydration means increasing the amount of water in your skin cells, which results in a healthy, smooth and plump complexion. Hyaluronic is the best ingredient for achieving this hydrated plump result. Dry skin lacks oil production. If you have a dry skin type you will have small, refined often invisible pores. Your skin produces less oil, which means it can often feel tight and look dry especially if it’s not taken care of. You will need more moisturizing products – heavier creams and non-stripping cleansers. The best advice we can give to you is to NOT self – diagnose. Visit an approved Image Skincare trained professional to receive the best advice for proven results. You can see a list of all our Image Skincare trained.

REFLECT TO PROGESS Sometimes we look towards the future and a radical change is what we want. To shake things up, we look for and explore the latest trends in the hope that the answer lies there. New things always grab our attention and now more than ever new products are being launched and marketing is constantly re-inventing itself. In a very busy world and a highly competitive industry, that can be what it takes to get noticed and stand out, but regarding our career it can be of benefit to re-visit why we chose it in the first place? Remind ourselves of the times when we looked forward to what we are maybe doing right now or some version of what we are doing now. What once excited you, motivated you and pushed you to get to where you are now? By pausing for a moment and putting time aside to reflect on the past, we can gather clues and have a clearer understanding about our personality traits and what we find enjoyable. I meet many people who can often be so caught up about achieving their future goals that they fail to stop and reflect on what they have achieved so far. It’s important to celebrate these moments and enjoy the process along the way. This is quite valuable for how we advance our career, as we become clearer about what motivates and excites us. We don’t always have to constantly re-invent ourselves. To be successful in your career, find out what you are good at, identify your skills, personality and strengths and spend time on developing these key areas. If you need professional career advice, please email careers@beautifuljobs.ie to arrange a consultation with Maria.

What is your Exit Strategy? Every salon owner needs an exit strategy, because at some point, for whatever reason, it will be time to move on from your business. When thinking about and planning your exit strategy, the two most fundamental questions to ask yourself are: 1. How am I going to get my money out of the business? 2. How much money will I get? It is advisable to plan your preferred exit strategy well in advance, as it can be a lengthy process. Here are some options to consider: Liquidation: This is the ‘close up shop and sell all the assets’ exit strategy. For a very small salon, especially those that are dependent on the performance of a single individual, liquidation is sometimes the only option, as there’s really nothing else to sell. It might be advisable to restructure the salon so it can be operated by somebody else – turning it into a salon for sale. Keeping your Business in the Family: This is the dream of many salon owners, as keeping your business in the family ensures that your legacy lives on and provides a living for your heirs. The advantages to this are you may be able to keep a hand in the business in an advisory capacity. However, you need to know that the family members have the skill, interest and commitment to take over. Sell your Business to Manager/Employees: This is ideal, as the employee gets an established business that they are familiar with and enthusiastic about. It’s possible to arrange a long-term buyout, which can increase loyalty and greatly motivate staff to work hard to make the business succeed. Again, this arrangement may allow for you to stay on in an advisory capacity. Handled carefully, this option should have very little impact on clients. Sell your Business on the Open Market: This is the most popular exit strategy option for salon businesses. The business owner puts the salon up for sale for a certain price – and hopefully walks away with the amount of money they want to get for it. A profitable, well run salon should be attractive to buyers and sell quickly. Assets, database, salon name, and good will can be incorporated when valuing the business for sale, maximising the return to the owner. However, salon businesses can be difficult to value and the selling price may be much lower than expected.
If this is your preferred exit strategy, spend time grooming your salon for sale, making it as attractive as possible to potential buyers. To Get the Best Price when Selling a Salon: ●Sell at the right time, for the right reasons – otherwise a buyer will use your circumstances to leverage against you. ●Determine what your salon is actually worth – invest in a professional valuation, while accepting that your salon is worth as much as it will fetch in the market place. ●Make sure your house is in order – people want to buy a thriving salon business, not a neglected one. ●Keep all business records up to date ●Make sure the premises is well maintained and attractive to potential buyers Whichever exit strategy you choose, planning in advance gives you time to do it right – and maximise your return on investment.

Establish a new pattern with gentle office yoga Denise Conway is a Yoga teacher (ERYT500, YACEP), based in Stockholm, Sweden. She teaches both studio and corporate classes and helps her students to identify and change negative postural patterns through yoga and functional movement. Her passion for female pelvic health led her to creating The Flower Empowered, a comprehensive web portal to help women to deal with pelvic floor problems. Her first book, The Flower Empowered is due to be published in 2019. At the dawn of each new year, fitness businesses experience their busiest time. We start the year strong with goals focused on improving health and fitness. Gyms are busy, yoga classes filled to capacity and determination reigns. This spike in attendance is short lived as many over-shoot what is realistic from a time perspective, trying to change too many things all at once. By February, many have returned the monotony of their usual routine, which often involves sitting at a desk eight hours per day, five days a week. The shape your body takes is held by your connective tissue (fascia) which is the organ of posture. If you sit every day, your gluteal muscles atrophy (waste away) while your connective tissue adapts to hold the shape you are creating while sitting. Over time, this can result in stiffness along your spine, tightness in your hips and tension in your shoulders. Change happens slowly over time. Many consistent small steps accumulate to become transformative. The choices you make dictate whether this transformation will improve or decline your health. Simple changes like taking the stairs, parking in the furthest space from the door, and taking a walk after lunch can have a positive effect. But what about the eight hours a day spent sitting in the office? What you do during these hours can have a big impact, so we’ve compiled a list of five steps that, if taken daily, can contribute to positive change:
Neck rolls - you can do these sitting or standing. Start gently bringing your chin towards your chest then slowly roll your head so your right ear moves towards your shoulder. Keep rolling until you are looking up, then left ear to left shoulder before coming back to having chin towards your chest. Make sure to keep your shoulders relaxed and in a neutral position as you make these movements. Repeat three times then change direction. Shoulder rolls - start with some shoulder shrugs where you draw your shoulders up to your ears then drop them down. After three shrugs, start to roll the shoulders forwards making three or four rotations. Then change direction rolling backwards. To finish, stretch your hands up over your head and take a nice long stretch. Reach to the right feeling a stretch on the right side of the body, then to the left. Heart opening - grab the back of your seat behind your butt with both hands and gently open your chest while lifting your heart upwards as you look towards the ceiling. This nice heart opener helps to stretch the muscles across the front of your chest - muscles which typically shorten when you sit working at a computer. This is a stretch you should really enjoy! Spinal twist - while sitting squarely in your chair with your feet and legs facing forwards, gently lengthen your spine and twist from the middle of your back to look behind you. You can hold one hand on the desk and one on the chair as you twist. Repeat on the opposite side. Forward fold - starting standing with your hands on your desk, Hinge forward from your hips while keeping your legs straight. The focus is on stretching your hamstrings. Try to keep your spine long and neutral while maintaining an open chest. If your hamstrings are comfortable, you can release the hands from your desk and fold forward. Allow your body to dangle as you grab opposite elbows then slowly roll up one vertebrae at a time until you are back to standing. (Careful not to bang your head on the desk coming up!) Sitting ankle circles - sit back down and start to do ankle circles rotating your feet. Rotate both feet in the same direction, then try opposite directions. Then flex your feet forwards and backwards. If you’ve been wearing heels, it can be nice to curl your toes under and gently press the front of your foot onto the floor. It’s also nice to roll a tennis ball under your foot if you have one. Wrist release - lastly, make two fists and rotate your wrists onwards repeating three or four times before changing direction. Then flap your hands forwards, flap them backwards and shake them side to side. You can finish by taking hold of your right wrist with your left thumb and middle. Gently draw your elbows away from each other (as though you are trying to pull your hand off!). Repeat this on the opposite hand. This will create a little space in the joint whilst helping to relieve any tension in your hands and wrists. Try to get up every 30 minutes. If you have a height adjustable desk, you can stand for 30 then sit for 30. If not, just get up and walk one lap around the office before sitting again. You also have the option of doing 5 sets of chair squats before you sit down - this will help to breathe some life into your gluteal muscles. Little by little, these small practices will help to establish a new pattern in your life that will contribute towards an improvement in your health. Persistence is key. Good luck!

The Care For Skin Foundation Founded in 2011, The Care for Skin Foundation is a non-profit organization created by IMAGE Skincare to support people who have suffered loss of skin due to accidents, tumours, burns, scars or genetic abnormalities. The goal of our organization is to restore normal facial and body appearance with plastic and reconstructive techniques to those who could not otherwise afford these types of surgeries. We help wherever skin is needed in the form of skin transplantations, scar corrections, contraction releases and other plastic surgical techniques. Care for Skin has a Medical Board of Advisors who organize, coordinate and lead trips to third world countries to help patients with the need of skin replacement. We also give physicians a platform on our website, who are willing to perform surgeries without financial reimbursement for people in need. Please contact us to learn more about becoming a physician. Care for Skin is a public charity with 501(c) (3) status. We accept donations to support our current and future activities. 100% of these donations will be utilized to support patients and not for administrative work. All expenses related to administration are provided for by Image Skincare. Care for Skin Foundation Visits Mandalay, Myanmar (Burma) From February 1 – February 15, 2018, the Care for Skin Foundation travelled to Mandalay, Myanmar to operate on children with cleft lip and palates, skin deformities, burn contractions and burn scars. The Care for Skin team was able to operate on up to eight patients a day. Surgeries were performed at the Mandalay General Hospital, while the team was supported by local hospital staff members, nurses and anaesthesiologists. “We were excited to put the money we raised over the last nine months to good use,” said Dr. Marc Ronert. “Our mission is to help children in need wherever skin is missing or needed, who do not have the financial means to pay for these sometimes simple and short procedures. Our goal is not only to help these little kids in need, but also to educate local physicians so that they can eventually do these procedures on their own.” Visit http://www.careforskin.org/ to donate.
‘’IF YOU DON’T LOOK THE PART YOU WILL LOSE IT’’ PLASTIC SURGERY OBSESSION IN NEW YORK CITY!…Meet Patti, the New Yorker who’s witnessed it all…..
My name is Patti and I am a 29-year-old Clinic Manager who has spent the past 6 years working in the Big Apple within the plastic surgery and dermatology field. In the USA and especially New York City, the need to look younger and have the features of a “Kardashian” has become a national phenomenon. Many of the top plastic surgeons in the world all have offices in New York City where people from all over the country and the world will come here to meet with the best of the best, so I am sure you can imagine how competitive our doctors can become. I have worked closely with a plastic surgeon on the upper east side for many years and can confirm from my experiences, that unless a doctor is extremely popular on ‘Instagram’ their hard work and years of school may not get them the patients they deserve. It can be extremely competitive and difficult to get patients to come to your specific practice unless you are keep up to date with your social media accounts. That being said due to social media, we have had visitors from the age of 15- 85 enquiring about the latest cosmetic procedure, from ‘plumped lips’ to full blown ‘mommy make-overs’ and face lifts. Our doctors are constantly booked up!. The most popular non surgical trends in our aesthetic industry are definitely Botox and fillers followed by laser hair removal, derma planning, and cool sculpting. A lot of patients are commonly booked for these procedures because they tend to cost slightly less than going under the knife. I have even had enquiries from young girls in high school who want their lips like ‘Kylie Jenner’! Many women and men as young as 20 will start getting Botox because here we believe it to be a preventative procedure that will help you always look younger and that’s if you keep up with the injections every 4-6 months. Patients will usually combine this procedure with filler which last for up to 8 months or laser skin resurfacing. Our most popular surgical procedures are liposuction, breast augmentation, blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), mommy make-overs, and rhinoplasties. Patients are commonly going under the knife to achieve the looks they desire. Plastic surgery or any cosmetic procedure is not always covered by insurance in the United States and these procedures can cost anything between 10-50 thousand dollars and more. As part of my role here, we introduced payment plans for those patients who really wanted the surgery but couldn’t afford it all upfront. It seems that even if you don’t have a well-paying job, people will still absolutely make sure to put money aside to look good. Our treatments are equally as popular among men, who get skin treatments, Botox, Liposuction and fillers to enhance their looks. Many of the guys here who work on Wall Street believe that having a certain type of image will help them succeed in such a competitive job market. Everyone in New York wants to look their best to impress top executives and build up their careers. They all have the “look good, feel good” attitude. This pressure in New York City can be very stressful, we all ‘live to work’ instead of ‘working to live’. Many of us work ridiculous and grueling hours, we are constantly challenged by our competitors and work colleagues, who WILL come and replace you in a second! This is another reason why the cosmetic industry is booming in this city. If you don’t look the part, you will lose it. Form me, New York City is a very fast paced and amazing city to work in, earning over $100k dollars per year, the salary is attractive and perks are amazing. I have gained huge experience both administrative and clinically and am privelledged to have worked alongside the best plastic surgeons in the world who have treated celebrities and I have made connections that will help me the rest of my career. In my sector you learn to work fast, be extremely productive and it’s a necessity to keep up with the latest trends. The cosmetic trends in NYC may seem drastic for some but the demand for aesthetic procedures is very high and not going to slow down in the United States any time soon. I truly believe that anyone who wants to work in NYC will come out of their experience and be an overall asset to any employer. After all it is true what they say, “If you can make it here you can make it anywhere.”
