CONFESSIONS OF A FAMOUS FACE Article by Linda Pototzki
Google the letters V-O-G-U-E and you are met with a cool 433 million pages. Sure, these are attributed to the Madonna classic and of course, the beauty bible. But there is another Vogue in town at this side of the Atlantic that has well-earned a significant portion of those results. DJ, model, celebrity TV reality star, entrepreneur and is now adding “jockey” to her resumé, the one and only Vogue Williams reveals all to our beauty columnist, Linda Pototzki of how she juggles it all as well as her essential beauty secrets. “I do juggle a lot, and obviously my priorities have changed since I had Theodore – he always comes first,” says Vogue. “I’m training to be a jockey with Ladbrokes, which has me out a few times a week and is so exhausting but so much fun! “I’ve also been going to everything in the race calendar. Epsom is the next one up and I always have an absolute ball there. It’s such a fun race day, and I get to judge the Best Dressed and then DJ at the end of the day, so I’m really looking forward to that.” Vogue, a self-confessed skincare lover, like ourselves, marvels when she finds a good beauty bargain. Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse Or Dry Oil For Face, Body And Hair (Be and Care, €19.81) goes right to top the list as her Holy Grail wonder product for its multi-tasking abilities to treat her tresses and body. Another must-have is Nuxe Night Recovery Oil Balm Crème Prodigieuse® boost (Escentual, €38.38) touting it as “the most amazing moisturiser.” “I get quite obsessed with my skincare. I was always quite picky about my skincare
and thought you have to pay loads of money to get really good skincare, but I’ve been using Nuxe products for about 7 weeks and they’re incredible.” On top of that our leading lady enjoys Nude by Nature Radiant Loose Powder Foundation (Feel Unique, €30), hailing its convenience particularly when on the run with a little human waiting. The 33-year-old holds this pick in high regard for its foolproof application of simply rubbing the product all over the face and you’re good to go. The Nude by Nature Touch of Glow Highlighter Stick (Feel Unique, €21.60) is responsible for her staple glow. To tame the mane, the blonde bombshell swears by Kevin Murphy Shampoo (Kevin Murphy, €24.66) particularly to help keep her hair extensions in tip-top condition. Vogue reveals she doesn’t take supplements at the moment, opting for a healthy diet instead as well as reducing alcohol intake and drinking plenty of water. However, since she was 28 she swears by a good
facial choosing to have a Collagen Wave Facial once a month, claiming that it makes a really big difference to your skin. “I’d try anything! I’ve heard lasers is the new thing - maybe I’ll try lasers next.” It is refreshing to learn of the proud Howth native’s honesty, particularly when quizzed about her view on aesthetic surgery and fillers. Going under the knife certainly isn’t on the agenda anytime soon however, Vogue says it might be something she considers potentially when she is older. “I would’ve said yes before I had my knee operation… that was the first operation I’d ever had and it was not fun. They’re very difficult to get over. So I don’t think I would be interested in that… but who knows, when I’m 60 I might want a facelift!” Not giving in to the latest trend of cosmetic and aesthetic fillers scores as the number one piece of advice she would give to her 18-year-old self. “Don’t touch your face! You see people overdoing it with their lip filler and you just have to be so careful… you only get one face. One piece of advice my mom gave me is always wear SPF, even in the winter. Just look after your skin, particularly in the sun.” Speaking of glitz and glam, the mum of one has her own tanning range, just in time for summer. Vogue reveals her tanning ritual and how she protects her skin from the sun. “My tan lasts about a week, and I usually do it on a Tuesday. With Bare products, I wanted it to be really easy to apply, mainly because I’m so bad at applying fake tan. “The only thing I do is apply loads of moisturiser to my feet, ankles, knees, elbows, and hands, and then I just apply the tan as normal. Our tan is really moisturising, so it’s really easy to get it on streak-free and then it wears off gradually.
I always exfoliate in the shower anyway because your body feels really nice and soft so I always exfoliate once a week before tanning.” The wife of famed Made in Chelsea’s hero, Spencer Matthews reveals she was completely involved in the process of creating her new tan, taking seven or eight iterations of the tan before it reached her seal of approval, she says. “I was road testing the whole thing, and I didn’t want to put my name to something I wasn’t proud of. You only get to release a product once, so it has to be absolutely perfect.
I’m so glad we took the extra time doing everything because it’s all paying off now, and everyone’s feedback has been so amazing that I want to make my company grow and grow.” The hazel eyes star has some tips too for those beauties who are looking to break into the modelling/beauty industry. “Bring out a product because you love it and believe in it, and you use it all the time, then it will be easier for you to bring out the best product possible. “I use tan every week and I have since I was about 15, and it’s something I absolutely love and couldn’t live without.
Being able to bring out my own tan has been so brilliant and I’ve really enjoyed the whole process. There was a lot of hard work but it’s worth it.” So, what’s next for Vogue Williams, I hear you ask, dear reader. “I have a very busy diary until the end of September, with Epsom Ladies Day and my Ladbrokes charity race as a jockey. I’m also working on a few really exciting things which I can’t talk about just yet, but they will be announced soon... it’ll be a good year!” Watch this space. We think Google is about to multiply its search term results!

Future Beauty, the world’s first clinical and aesthetics show, created just for consumers, launches in the RDS this September 7th-8th .
WHAT IS FUTURE BEAUTY EXACTLY? It’s 2-day event, dedicated to educating consumers about the latest treatments and technologies in the fields of clinical beauty, cosmetic surgery and aesthetic dentistry. WHO IS BEHIND IT? The show is the brainchild of sisters, Liz and Nikki Dwyer, who’ve observed that aesthetic treatments, cosmetic dentistry and plastic surgery is no longer the preserve of the elite. These treatments have become very mainstream and are been used not just to treat aesthetic issues but physiological problems too, from obliterating veins to saving your back with a breast reduction, clearing adult acne to helping restore pelvic floor muscles. They are also about looking after your looks, and with an exponential rise in women having peels, laser treatments, injectables, cosmetic dentistry and even plastic surgery in the past few years, Liz and Niki this is the Future of Beauty. Liz, a stalwart of the beauty industry in Ireland (award-winning Beauty Editor and journalist, a regular contributor to TV and radio and Host of Extreme Beauty on TV3) feels there is a ginormous gap between the consumer and the medical side of the aesthetic market. “No one is properly educating women about these treatments. Be it information on the breath of treatment options available across a wide range of issues or the science, technology and ingredients behind them. Our aim with Future Beauty is to afford women an unbiased platform to educate the pros and cons all clinical aesthetic treatments – invasive of not. And we want to hammer home the message, if you are going to do it, do it right.” says Liz. WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT AT THE SHOW? The Mainstage, will host hourly panel talks, with a host of Ireland’s leading medical experts, on the most industry relevant topics from TWEAKments to cosmeceuticals, fat loss technology to Hollywood smiles, breast surgery to gynaecology concerns. Some of the experts include: Consultant Dermatologists: Dr Rosemary Coleman, Prof Catriona Ryan and Dr Niki Ralph, Consultant Surgeons: Ms Éilís Fitzgerald, Mr Fuan Chan, Mr Richard Hanson, Dr Siún Murphy Cosmetic Doctors and Nurses: Dr Jane & Katherine Mulrooney & Nurse Jeannette Dunne. Anna Gunning & Patricia Molloy. Dentists: Dr Aisling O’Mahony, Dr Audrey Dore Geraghty There will also be two exhibition halls, with a range of elite exhibitors predominantly from sectors such as cosmeceuticals, aesthetic clinics, surgical clinics, aesthetic dentists, aesthetic technology providers and pharma companies. Visitors can chat with many of the Consultants and medical experts on stand, try out new skincare technologies and treatments, learn more about all of the aesthetic option now available to them and road-test new body contouring treatments. They will also get to take home an exclusive goody bag, with vouchers samples and surprise treats . Future Beauty, RDS, Dublin on Sept 7-8th. Tickets from €30. OH MY GLAM MEET CLAIR
TELL US ABOUT YOU, YOUR TRAINING AND WORK EXPERIENCE? First and foremost, I am a full-time working mum, so my life is incredibly varied! I started my working life in the music business from the moment I left school. I had always wanted to work and earn money and I began in a small record shop in Belfast at the age of 13. Through this I learned to network and negotiate at very early age and developed a keen sense of commercial awareness from which I realized I could turn a profit out of nearly anything. I then moved into the film distribution industry which in turn led to becoming a divisional sales Director of Exertis UK, one of Europe’s top technology distributors. WHAT LED YOU TO SET UP YOUR OWN BUSINESS? After Exertis closed their Belfast office, I took the opportunity to start my own company, something I had always wanted to do. My company has evolved over the last 4 years from distribution to manufacture, and through my love of cosmetics and the enthusiasm of my partners that I work with our make-up ranges Oh My Glam and Glam Doll were developed and launched last July. I am blessed to have two amazingly creative partners who have much international experience in manufacturing and distribution, and who have the global contacts necessary. This was key to our start-up.
WHAT ARE YOUR LONG TERM GOALS FOR THE BUSINESS? Our long-term goal is to establish Oh My Glam and Glam Doll as household names covering a full demographic age group for all people who love cosmetics. Our key strategy is to combine what we call the thee “P’s” – Price, Pigmentation and Packaging between both ranges, and we have covered a wide age range with Glam Doll as our entry level product and Oh My Glam being at the higher end of the market. WHAT’ IS YOUR TYPICAL DAY LIKE? I imagine anyone heading up a business will say the same as I – in that no days are typical! I will move from design to commercials in a heartbeat from minute to minute. I can be in one day focusing on 5 different areas of the business, but I am fortunate to have a great team around me who can move as quickly as I do! They will undoubtedly say I never sit still and am hard to keep up with – and this would be true! Last week for example I travelled the UK meeting potential customers buyers and demonstrating products while simultaneously orchestrating our PR team and checking the packaging of the samples produced for our new ranges. I don’t think I could complain but I sometimes don’t know where the time goes. I’m sure we can all relate!
WHAT’ IS THE BEST SELLING PRODUCT IN YOUR COMPANY? Our Matte-tastic lip sets and our Metallicah eye palettes have had soar away success, but we have been delighted with the response we have received with the entire range. When I read feedback on our socials and on review sites like Trust Pilot I’m bowled over by some of the responses. We always knew we had designed a great range of products and to have our customers tell us that we were right was amazingly gratifying. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO SET UP AN ECOMMERCE/ ONLINE BUSINESS LIKE YOURS? Every e-commerce business will say the same thing, I guess. Build your website but look beyond traffic. Visits to your site will be a great source of comfort to your dream once it’s built, but the challenge will always be conversion to sales. This will be achieved but perhaps it will require more marketing than you first anticipated. Marketing is crucial to success – and there are some very clever ways to execute this without going overboard on your budget.
YOU PERSONALLY, WHAT IS THE MAIN BEAUTY PRODUCT YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT ? Well I am forever trying new things and my newest go-to beauty product is a set of 12 makeup brushes I bought designed by local Northern Ireland entrepreneur Grainne McCoy. The softness and finish on these brushes must be felt to be believed! WHAT ARE THE MAIN UPCOMING TRENDS IN MAKE UP THIS SUMMER? Festival season is something we are always mindful of with Oh my Glam and Glam Doll. Our Glam Doll range focuses on funky fresh festival looks that are designed to be affordable. Glossy cheeks, shimmers and glossy lips are part of that festival trend and our ranges focus on bright colourful eyes. Oh My Glam has a launch around the corner of some fantastic new products which will take your makeup look from day to night… but more of that will be revealed in the coming months!!

70% of the world’s oxygen comes from seaweed
It is estimated that algae and marine plants produce 70-80% of the oxygen in the atmosphere. We need seaweed a whole lot more than it needs us. The very air we breathe comes from algae. In Ireland, we are blessed with nutrient-rich sea water, an abundance of seaweed and fresh air to beat the band. If we don’t look after this precious resource, harvest it carefully and sustainably and work to actively reduce the pollution that enters our oceans, we will be cutting off our own vital life- line. Oxygenation is essential to your health and the maintenance of skin cells; healthy skin works to effectively process all the environmental factors that surrounds us. IN FLIGHT SKINCARE Your body is said to be deprived of up to 1.5 litres of water on a three-hour flight and humidity levels drop as low as 4%. She created the Bia Beauty brand originally on her kitchen table while still a student and a new mom in Cork and a ₏5000 loan from the credit union and grew and developed to being sold through more than 100 retailers nationwide, up until the Codex acquisition, Tracey ran Bia as a family business with no more than 5 people in its workforce in a small factory in Cork. As Bia Beauty has become part of Codex Beauty Europe, Ireland will be the hub for European operations. It will also continue doing R&D, development and technology transfer in Cork. Therefore, as the company grows, Codex Beauty will continue adding positions in these key functional areas, as well Codex Beauty is launching June as logistics and service support 27th 2019 and will be available to purchase from www.codexbeauty. functions for DTC sales in com and at select Meadows and Byrnes stores. Europe.
It is estimated that the project will increase the number of people from the current 6 to 20 over the next 2/3 years. “This is really new for me to be part of a global team and be able to have the experts that I’ve always wanted to have at my fingertips now, experts in regulations, sales and marketing,” said Tracey. “It’s absolutely a dream come true for a small brand like Bia. A benefit of teaming up with Codex is the ability to conduct clinical trials, which we previously couldn’t afford. The results of the first trial have been outstanding so far.” “Ireland has a sense of entrepreneurship, excellent educational institutions with one of the few European herbal sciences programs at CIT, very clean sources of both terrestrial and marine organic flora, and a great source of people with experience in biotechnology. This confluence of factors makes Ireland very unique” said Barbara Paldus, founder of Codex Beauty. Codex Beauty has chosen a production partner in Ireland, Europharma Concepts. “With 5 contract manufacturers audited in Europe (Ireland, Iceland, France and 2 in Switzerland), 1 supplier in Canada and 2 suppliers in the US – out of all 8 suppliers, Europharma Concepts in Offaly was the most cGMP and had the highest score in an audit. They were also audited by the FDA and EMEA and product regulated products and this is the reason we have chosen to produce here in Ireland” said Paldus. Codex Beauty is a global collective of clean beauty skincare brands that is responsibly revolutionisinghow the world views and maintains optimal skin health using ancient herbal traditions, innovative, vegan formulations, unprecedented quality standards and pharmaceutical-grade manufacturing, science, and transparency. By developing products using carefully selected ingredients, formulation innovation, and information transparency, Codex Beauty is empowering skin care customers with the products and peace of mind they deserve.
Diverse. Dedicated. Differentiated.
DIVERSE. DEDICATED. DIFFERENTIATED. Codex Beauty is a bioscience-led beauty company that is setting a new standard in organic luxury skincare. Founded in Silicon Valley, California, Codex Beauty is led by a global team of scientists, technologists, botanists, cosmetic chemists, dermatologists, and genuine problem solvers who believe in utilizing science to harness the power of nature in its purest, most potent forms. At the core of Codex Beauty is founder Barbara Paldus, a dynamic entrepreneur who earned her Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University. Afterward, Paldus spent the next two decades at the forefront of research and innovation at spectroscopy and biotechnology companies-eventually cofounding two Silicon Valley companies that, among many breakthroughs, helped bring intelligent sensors and state-of-theart control software to the market, paving the way for carbon cycle trading, food integrity testing, accessible vaccines, personalized medicine and cell therapy. Now Paldus-who has been awarded more than 30 U.S. patents and numerous honors for her achievements in optics and life sciencesis applying her knowledge to the botanical beauty space.
Naturally curious, Paldus learned that many go-to practices in the beauty industry do not yield the most effective results.
“I realised that natural ingredients hold so much more potential, but the extraction techniques, stabilizing methods and delivery systems are not on the same level with what we have in the biotechnology or food industry community here and around the world. Paldus
Inspired, Paldus traveled to places near and far from Ireland to Chile to Icelandand found a handful of under the radar beauty brands, all led by experts intensely dedicated to exceptionally pure, sustainable techniques, but largely unknown to the rest the world. “I knew that if we combined their on the ground knowledge with the latest technology we could take these beautiful lines to the next level of efficacy together,” Paldus says. The result is Codex Beauty: A collective of global brands built on science, organic and vegan ingredients, plant-based preservatives, pharmaceutical-grade processes, safety and efficacy trials, innovative and sustainable packaging, and third party certification. All products are submitted to the kind of rigorous testing found in biotechnology and a strict adherence to good manufacturing practices (GMP). “We are dedicated to telling you exactly why our products were created and how they will impact your skin and health,” explains Paldus. “To that end, nothing at Codex Beauty is ever ‘good enough.’ We are always searching for the next discovery or technical breakthrough,” says Paldus. “We will never stop innovating, refining and improving. That is engrained in our DNA.”
The name Codex draws inspiration from the ancient bound manuscripts that forever changed how knowledge was shared. In the first century AD, the “Codex” replaced the scroll. These early versions of the modern book many of which detailed the latest medical and scientific advances became the new universal standard. Codex will do the same for beauty. Information is the new luxury when it comes to skincare. And now is the time to take clean beauty to the next level.
“Our core mission is customer transparency and education. This is just the beginning,” Paldus
Our Code Only Plant Preservatives.
Our Code Quantifiable Scientific Data
Our bodies are constantly exposed to chemical environmental challenges. While it varies, the skin is able to absorb some portion of the products we apply to it. So we created exceptionally pure formulations that are organic, vegan and non-toxic, with only plant-based preservatives. Similarly, we leverage bio-plastic airless and recyclable glass containers that minimize our carbon footprint and reduce pollution in the context of our production systems.
We use state-of-the-art measurements to perform clinical trials to demonstrate the efficacy of our products. We harness cutting-edge science in search of skincare solutions to identify key active ingredients. Our bioscience-based skincare approach, together with our pharmaceutical–grade manufacturing methods-including extraction techniques that do not damage the intricate biological structures of the active compoundsallows us to create skincare that is both effective and safe.
Our Code Open-Source Transparency As scientists, we believe information must be shared with the customer. That’s why we publish clinical test data, apply for third party purity certification and put our formulas through quality testing multiple times to ensure every batch hits our high standards. We are committed to arming you with the best information to assess how our products will impact your skin and health-and we encourage you to share your feedback with us as we develop the next generation of clean, transparent skincare for all.
BIA COLLECTION Codex Beauty Introduces the
Originated in the forests and rocky shores of Ireland, Bia skincare blends ancient Irish herbal knowledge with modern science. Founded by Cork-based herbal scientist Tracey Ryan, Bia is powered with bio-actives sourced from native, hardy Irish plants—wild harvested from local, organic farmers and growersand developed with sustainable, pharmaceutical-grade manufacturing practices to ensure potent results. A collaboration among foragers, scientists and expert formulators, Bia is extremely effective and exceptionally pure skincare for all.
The Origin
Ireland is home to a rich and abundant range of indigenous herbs. These native plant species cover the region’s mountains, woods, and bogs, and are harvested by experienced growers across the country. Mild temperatures and heavy rainfall, coupled with the highest proportion of natural vegetation of any European country, give way to Ireland’s lush greenness. An optimal environment and low levels of pollution produce beautifully prodigious herbs, such as the nourishing meadowsweet, comfrey, nettle, elderflower, and bog myrtle found in Bia’s formulas. In Ireland, harvesting wild herbs for medicine has long been part of everyday life, and local cures are passed down through generations. With its traditional roots, Bia pays tribute to these local herbalists and their expert knowledge of therapeutic plants.
The Science
Bia utilizes the latest advancements in bio-technology and green chemistry to produce efficient formulas with quantifiable, scientific results. Bia leverages the patent-pending Codex Beauty plant-based preservative system which is free of chemicals and supports skin health. Bia also utilizes airless containers wherever possible as a secondary barrier to further maximize product safety and shelf life. In addition to carrying out extensive, third-party clinical trials, Bia follows current Good Manufacturing Processes (cGMP) and leverages a “clean room” for safe, pharmaceutical-grade production-a practice that’s more commonly implemented in the health and food world, than beauty. And in response to the beauty industry’s prevalent use of petrochemical-based plastics, Bia uses green polyurethane (PE) airless containers made with plant-based biofuels.

The Hero Complex
Unique to Bia is the patent-pending BiaComplex, a deeply nourishing and hydrating blend of macerated oil infusions that’s used as the base for products, instead of plain water. It features healing oil infusions of calendula officinalis, helichrysum italicum and symphytum officinale, as well as hydrating water infusions of viola tricolor and malva sylvestris. Foodgrade emulsifiers help combine these oil and water ingredients. Each plant extract addresses skin hydration in distinct yet complementary ways: Calendula officinalis oil infusions: Improves skin elasticity, firmness and density. Helichrysum italicum oil infusion: Creates a protective barrier to trap moisture and keep the skin hydrated. Symphytum officinale: Helps shed the drier outer layers of the epidermis. Viola tricolor: Uses polysaccharides to boost the skin’s capacity to retain water by improving osmotic function. Althea officinalis: Provides a soothing, protective gel that moisturizes dry, rough skin.

HOW CAN I MAXIMISE RETAIL ON SUMMER PRODUCTS? ARE YOU LETTING YOUR CLIENTS BUY THEIR SUN PRODUCTS FROM PHARMACIES AND DEPARTMENT STORES? LEARN HOW TO INCREASE SALES IN BEAUTY RETAIL WHILE OPTIMIZING THE SUMMER MARKET? Sun Protection is a ‘hot’ category of the cosmetics industry. But less than 5% of these sales are transacted in spas and beauty salons... Do you educate your clients about the importance of sun protection? According to the National Cancer Institute, 42% of adults don’t use sun protection. So immediately there is an untapped market for you, while offering good salon customer service. Educate your clients; ask them to consider this hard fact – of all cancers, skin cancer is the most common, making sun screens their number one skincare priority.
DOUBLE CHECK your product knowledge: know how to use the products, how long they will last, how your brand compares to others, how it can be used in conjunction with other TRAIN your beauty therapists to retail, when the client comes in for her appointment, introduce her holiday retail requirements. ASK for the retail sale, if you don’t, she will buy the products you have recommended, but from somebody else... CHANGE your window/ retail displays and merchandising for the summer months, making sun products very prominent. USE your product information; educate your clients, highlighting the unique selling points of your brand.
TO MAXIMISE YOUR SUMMER RETAIL PRODUCT OPPORTUNITIES:
RUN A COMPETITION, for example, whoever sells the most number of sun products over the summer months gets the prize.
INTRODUCE a ‘Holiday Package’ of treatments. Once a client mentions going on holiday, suggest she books the package.
And most important: STAY FOCUSED, Summer Product sales are too good an opportunity to miss!
A brain injury can be completely life-
altering and is certainly not something to be dismissed. Brain injuries can be so catastrophic that the victim is left entirely dependent on others and for this reason, many claims are actually made by their families and loved ones on their behalf. A brain injury can have a variety of consequences from the short-term to the long-term, ranging from a period of illness while the brain recovers, to lifelong that require complete changes to the victim’s way of life. This article aims to guide you as the victim and/or the claimant in the causes, types and consequences of brain injury, as well as the ways in which compensation can help.
Causes of Brain Injury This kind of personal injury can have a variety of causes, but they all tend to be serious accidents. The can include: • • • • • • •
Serious slips, trips or falls, Road traffic accidents Cycling accidents Accidents in the workplace Sports accidents Medical negligence Less serious head injuries such as concussion can be caused by more minor accidents but can still have their own particular consequences.
Types of Brain Injury There are many different types of brain injury that can arise from the above causes. Listed are some of the more usual ones: Concussion As mentioned, this is one of the less serious types of brain injury, although can become very serious if treated incorrectly. They can have ongoing symptoms that last long after such as
Making a B Compensa
Here’s everything
headaches, loss of memory and confusion, or balance, speech and vision problems. The symptoms of a concussion need to be closely monitored as they can also be symptoms of more serious brain injuries. Subdural haematoma. This is a condition where blood pools between the skull and the brain’s surface and the symptoms are similar to a very severe concussion. It can be considered a very serious injury and have ongoing consequences. Subarachnoid Haemorrhage This is caused by bleeding on the brain’s surface and, while it isn’t common, is the cause of around one out of every 20 strokes in the UK. If left untreated, it could cause a stroke which could bring about its own set of longterm health issues. Diffuse axonal injury This is a devastating brain injury often seen as a result of road traffic accidents where the head gets jolted and the brain moves back and forth inside the skull, resulting in the connections between brain cells being broken.
Brain Injury tion Claim?
g you need to know
Open-head injury or penetrating head injury. This is an easy-to-spot but horrendous injury, where someone has either hit their head violently enough to expose their brain, or an object has pierced the skull. The consequences of this can vary as it can depend on how badly and where the brain was exposed or penetrated.
Consequences of a brain injury The consequences of a brain injury can vary greatly depending on the severity and type of the injury. However, they can include: The need for ongoing hospital treatment over a long period – sometimes for the rest of the victim’s life. Loss of earnings. Even a minor brain injury will require a significant amount of time off work and, in the case of catastrophic brain injury, the victim may not be able to return to work at all. Reliance on family, friends or carers for day-to-day living. This often includes family members giving up work to become carers and can impact family income in a serious way.
A complete change of lifestyle where the victim has to give up hobbies and interests, adapt their home or move house, give up driving and so on. There can be further consequences unique to the individual too, depending on their particular brain injury and the lifestyle they carried out before.
Can Compensation help? Making a successful personal injury claim can’t turn the clock back and undo the injury, but it can make life easier by covering lost earnings, paying for any adaptations that need to be made to support the victim’s dayto-day life, paying for rehabilitation or carers and compensation for the emotional impact. With this type of devastating injury, compensation claims can be for large amounts, so it can be placed into a personal injury trust so as not to interfere with any benefit claims you may be entitled to make. Did you know beauty and spa therapists are among the happiest workers in the world? Research called ‘The Happiness Index’ has found those who choose a career in the beauty; spa and hair industry report higher job satisfaction than teachers; engineers; architects and bankers. But what if your current workplace is diminishing how happy you could feel in your career? No matter how much satisfaction you may get from your clients, if you do not feel valued by your employer with a good work-life balance your happiness will be limited. The corporate world is now placing a huge focus on ‘workplace wellness’ but ironically it is the practitioners of wellness that are dragging behind. Bob Coates, MANAGING DIRECTOR of City & Guilds which carried out the ‘Happiness Index’ research, said with a clear impact on the bottom line, improving workplace happiness is rising up the business agenda and employers cannot afford to ignore it. “Companies can no longer rely on those established reward and recognition policies that fail to resonate with employees and do little to combat stress levels in the workplace,” he said. Some beauty and wellness employers are leading the charge in creating a dynamic learning environment focussed on the employee’s wellness at the core of their business model. An unhappy stressed therapist cannot relieve the stress of their clients. One such company, Rainforest Spa in Enniskerry Co. Wicklow, has adopted a continuous learning model for all staff no matter how highly qualified the therapist and also a Graduate Training Programme. This means that highcalibre beauty and spa therapy graduates get the opportunity to move straight into a paid role without prior ‘on the job’ work experience. With a full induction and paid training modules provided by Rainforest Spa’s inhouse beauty trainer; recruits are given equal opportunity to excel in their roles at Ireland’s first integrated Aesthetic & Wellness Spa. Rainforest Spa also places a large emphasis on the wellness of its team by offering complimentary Yoga & Pilates classes before or after work at its purpose built Wellness Studio alongside the Spa. Staff also have access to a Rainforest’s Nutritiona & Lifestyle Coaching Programme to maximise their wellness at work and at home. Rainforest Spa is currently recruiting a Beauty Therapist with Front of House skills at its Enniskerry base.
