his issue is all about the professionals who are making their mark in Houston and surrounding communities. It is also all about our very first annual Woman 2 Woman Empowerment Conference& Awards Luncheon! It has been on my heart to expose ladies to the wealth of inspiration from women in the community committed to seeing their dreams come to pass and helping others do the same in the form of a workshop. In 2013, we had the honor to recognize and award 3 leading ladies at our Vendor Blender. With this experience, brought an urgent sense of doing more to empower women aspiring to reach their goals. As a result we added the Woman 2 Woman Empowerment Conference as an additional layer to our awards ceremony. Being an educator, I have the opportunity to see firsthand how information expands the minds of those learning and the positive effects and habits that follow. It is my mission to interject fun, hands on learning, and inspiration into each conference to see those learning engaged and enlightened. 2014's Woman 2 Woman Conference will be led by powerful women of the Houston and surrounding areas from diverse backgrounds and career fields. Our AM Conference will host 3 focus workshops as follows; Workshop 1 "Opening Conversations" led by Key Note Speaker Alexis Herron, Workshop 2 "Team Building" by myself TBLE founder Shunte Davis, and Workshop 3 “Vision Board Building" led by CEO Shana Naylor. This year we are so pleased to announce we will honor and recognize ladies with our Power 10 Award, Leaders of Hope Award, Woman on the Rise Award, and Woman of the Year Award. We will also host a panel session "Discussions over Lunch" with Dr. Shiree Berry, Fashion Blogger Shalanda Turner, CEO Arnaecia Alridge, Comedian Rayla Scott, and myself as moderator. So many great topics, laughter, support, and fun all in one event! It is my hope that each woman walks away with both intangible and tangible treasures that will take them to the next level or encourage them to take the next step to achieving their goals. Get ready for a fun filled day of learning, leading, and winning. Tickets are available online at http:// www.totalbeautyladiesevent.com/w2w-conference-tickets See you there! Do

you want to know a way to jump back into the fashion world in Houston? Go to an event like this! Total Beauty Ladies Events (TBLE) can put on a party and I am totally glad I went. The theme for this party was hats and heels and well I had to show up only looking my summer-y best. Wouldn’t you? Of course my hat was immediately outdone by the other women; big, beautiful, Sunday best was on the menu and I was humbled upon entering the LAMIK studio located off Greenbriar.

Of course the star of the show was the hostess and MC for the event Shunte Gamble-Davis. She knew how to greet you as soon as she saw you; with a smile and a hug of course. She orientated myself and my friend and was always full of compliments for every lady in the room. The event was a lovely way to pamper yourself, your mother, or any special lady in your life and there were plenty of areas to pamper yourself.

There were vendors selling their great products (oils, jewelry, and make-up), a masseuse, brow waxing, eyelash extension application, and of course make-up artists to make you shine (the last three provided by LAMIK). There were also door prizes, a fashion “walk off”, and music to round out the event. Although I did not dance, I was thoroughly entertained by the women who did get out on the dance floor to shake it.

The best part of the event though, was knowing that all this pampering and raffle ticket purchasing was helping a cause; breast cancer awareness. This had been my second charity event I attended that week, but by far my favorite due to the environment. I am glad to know that TBLE gives back to benefit such causes.

I want to thank Shunte and the other ladies of TBLE for inviting the Houston Fashion Bloggers to their event; it was beautifully put on and was a much needed pampering day for my friend and I. Photography by RL Studios 11

My Outfit I wore a lovely multi colored chevron bell-sleeved dress, with leggings, wedges, Chloe + Isabel jewelry (of course), and topped it off with my round hat. I chose this outfit to brighten up my mood and get me in better spirits. I just moved back to Houston that past Monday and needed to broaden my social circle; these women were the best to be around.

Stay beautiful lovelies!

Shunte Davis Team Building | Workshop 2

hrough my passion of event planning and hosting, I have had remarkable experiences and connections that have allowed me to give back to various communities in need. I love creating an atmosphere that encourages laughter, smiles, uplifted spirits, and joy.

My journey began in 2010 with the release of my first book “Therapy for Your Soul Book of Poetry”. I set out to share my personal testimony of finding my way as a young single mother back to God in through writing. I knew I wanted to do more than host book signings. I wanted to host events that empowered those attending, spotlight others, and gave back. In 2012, I debuted the first annual Total Beauty Ladies Event with purpose of fundraising for breast cancer awareness. With the success of this event, my husband and I, took a step to grow this event into an operating company with the mission to produce quality events and programs that offer consistent philanthropic support to families. In 2013, we launched our non-profit My Beautiful Family Inc. to provide programs and assistance for those in need, Beautifully Being U! Magazine as a voice of the community and our fundraising efforts, and the Total Beauty Ladies Group to serve the community through a variety of community outreach and networking opportunities. I enjoy the growth we have been able to see and the lives touched by our support. I am also the mother of three beautiful children, a full time educator, published author of a children’s book “The Day I Dressed the Big Boy Way”, and the CEO of All Twisted by Design, where I create and sell handmade jewelry. I love creating, whether it is an event, piece of jewelry, or story. Whatever I can envision, I replicate through attention to detail and focused passion.

Shana Naylor Vision Board Building | Workshop 3

C

harismatic, encouraging, giving, loyal, and inspiring, these are just a few words to describe Shana “the Control Freak” Naylor. This self-proclaimed “control freak” is a woman walking in her purpose, passionately carrying out her mission to empower single mothers worldwide. Shana is the founder of “The Real Single Moms Club,” an organization devoted to providing opportunities and experiences that educate, enlighten, and empower single moms to reach their full potential in spite of challenges they may face.

Shana understands firsthand the struggle with wearing multiple hats; trying to maintain balance as sole disciplinarian, provider and decision maker in the home, be the professional team member “expected” to over deliver at work, and be the “go to” girlfriend who is always available to her friends and never gets any ME TIME. And through all of this, she still has to maintain poise and look like she has it all under CONTROL.

In their daily lives to create peace, build confidence, move forward with hope. Shana’s life work arises from her desire to be an agent of change in the lives of others. Through her platform, The Real Single Moms Club, Shana hosts a variety of events and workshops in Houston designed especially for single moms, bringing them together where they have the opportunity connect, share, encourage, and grow with each other.

“My Setbacks are only a Setup for my Comeback.”

As a recognized empowerment catalyst, Shana is helping single moms redefine the way they live, work, and play, showing them how to proactively take control of their lives. She is committed to serving, coaching, and supporting single moms by making sure they are equipped with BASIC, which includes having at minimum a General Education Diploma (GED), in addition to other necessary tools and resources that

Once shattered by her own insecurities and low levels of self-worth as the result of being a teenage mother and having two failed marriages, Shana felt herself losing control and unintentionally allowing her life to be controlled by the opinions and expectations of her. Despite having an MBA, a daughter who is a model teenager and being a successful professional, her life was once “OUT OF CONTROL”.

Some of the amazing events this year include: a “Yoga Dr ea m Boa r d Pa rt y ,” “Keeping it Real with Single Moms” panel discussion, movie viewing and discussion of Tyler Perry’s The Single Moms Club,” and coming soon, the Kentucky Derby Houston. Shana is an example of how one can overcome any difficulties in life. Her favorite sayings are “God has turned my Mess into a Message” and “My Setbacks are only a Setup for my Comeback.” Refusing to be a product of her past, a statistic, or live by the labels and limits of oth-

other of 3, Business Owner, Comedian, President/Founder of Phenomenal Women Association and Networking for Vendors

Believe it or not I found my voice in 2006. After 2 near death experience. I was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure with 30% heart function, an enlarged heart, and a prolapsed heart valve. I was given the prognosis of death, without a time frame, as my illnesses were described as non-reversible or curable. That was enough for me. I medically retired from the Texas Department of Corrections as a Sgt. because working wasn't an option any

With that idea, I created my first business Mrs. Mandies Drinks and More. Shortly after, I was asked by a friend to compete in a woman only comedy battle for Cancer Foundation for her Aunt. I didn't hesitate to join! I was very surprised and excited I won, seeing as this was the first time I’ve ever participated in such an event. Once word spread, I was approached again to compete. I battled four more times against both men and women from Huntsville and Houston winning all of them with flying colors.

"“Life is not promised to any of us; live in the now."

longer.

I decided that I was not going to live unhappy under any circumstances; I was going to live life to the fullest. I had to change some vital things in my life, so I did. It took nearly 6 years to do it all, but I did. After medical ups and down I final became stable and regained 70% heart function. I said, “Life here I come!” I asked myself what was I good at and what would I enjoy? Then I had a light bulb moment. I love to talk, laugh, and have a cocktail in between.

Wanting to do more in the hospitality area, my sister and I created Two Sisters Creations specializing in gift baskets, table settings, and candy bars. Then if that wasn't enough I said I wanted to do more. I then created The Make-Up Bag specializing in the sell of brand name make-up products and classes for makeup application. I also manage Captured Memories Scrapbooking, Discreet Desires by Rayla, and now Creative Canvases & Cocktails. Yes sounds like a lot but when you enjoy what you do it isn't work it "Fun"! Life is not promised to any of us; live in the now. I am enjoying life to the fullest now. I dance to my own life’s music. I aspire to do all things I dream of and I encourage those around me to do the same.

Melanie Crowel

M

elanie Crowel is a native Texan, born and raised in Nacogdoches Texas. She currently lives in Magnolia, TX with her amazing husband Ronald Crowel and is the mother of two wonderful adult children; her daughter Amity and son Terry. She accepted the Lord at a very young age, was baptized in water at eight and baptized in the Holy Spirit at fifteen. Her faith in God was first ignited when she was seven years old and her father gave his heart to the Lord. Melanie had been praying for her alcoholic father every night since she was four. She remembers her prayers being answered and his day of redemption so vividly. In honor of her father, she wrote a song to commemorate this gift from God and titled it “Faith of a Child”. Melanie was a victim of domestic violence for sixteen years as a young adult. One day when she felt like she could no longer bear the burden any longer she cried out to the Lord in utter desperation. At that very moment God gave her a vision of a sunrise and she heard him say “Your sunrise is on the way”. Soon after, by the hand of God, Melanie was able to get her and her children out of the harmful environment that had entrapped them for so long. Her testimony coupled with her passion to help and encourage others led her to launch “Come Morning Ministries”, a ministry focusing on and ministering to women.

She has over twenty five years of ministry experience beginning with her volunteering in the children and youth ministries at her home town Assemblies of God church in Nacogdoches. Melanie has worked in a professional and ministry capacity for three internationally known ministries; Benny Hinn Ministries / World Healing Center Church, New Beginnings Church / Pastors Larry and Tiz Huch and Joel Osteen Ministries / Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas. During her time on staff in the Administrative Offices at Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas she was involved in ministry by teaching in weekend Compass Classes, leading staff bible studies, and speaking at the Wednesday Women of the Word and other events. Seeing her passion and her calling for ministry she was asked to join the Lakewood Church Women's Ministry staff where she is still actively involved volunteering her time as the Women's Encounter Coordinator. Melanie is an Ordained Minister, Public Speaker, and Vocalist and has been asked to minister at various conferences, churches and special events. She is currently furthering her education focusing on a Bachelor’s degree in Victim Studies.

Y

ears ago, I was in a very unhealthy relationship that ended with an argument. In that argument I was called a FAT A**. When I heard that it was like everything in me just wanted to ball up in a hole and die. Out the window went myself esteem. It was not until 2009 I found my self-esteem. I started dressing up, putting on makeup, exercising, and doing whatever I could to make myself

feel good.

Being that I really dislike that word { fat } I decided to turn it into something positive, something catchy, something that would build up the self esteem of the next plus size female. So for 2 years, I worked on the name and came up with Fashionable and Thick I put it on T-shirts just to see what type of response I would get from the public. Everyone seemed to welcome it with open arms, of course I had a few haters (laughs) . Since then I have started my website www.fashionableandthick.net. Personal Motto: Embrace your thickness. What inspires you? Being a plus size female there are many negative things we have to endure. So to bring about a change to the way the word FAT is used, is what inspires and motivates me. FAT is a very ugly word that speaks volumes. FASHIONABLE AND THICK...CHANGING THE WAY FAT IS USED. What is your personal goal for 2014? To be global!

W

hat inspires you? Seeing those who encounter obstacles or have had difficulties in life still push on, rise from ashes and become diamonds. I am deeply inspired from those who are rebels against the words "you can't do it" and make things happen. Those who have mastered the art of manifestation and strive to push their potential are those that demand my attention. How do you use your talents/ company to give back to the community? My giving back is fairly unique at this time and has shown me a different strength I possess. I have been fighting brain cancer for over three years and a year ago I had to stop working and start fighting for my life. Due to my nature of work and clients from previous contracts and trainings, I have still been able to freelance as needed and provide trainings online for clients and companies. While I cannot travel for trainings or go work in the community as I once did, I now look for ladies who have turned their lives around and are striving to go in business for themselves. I guess I have become an "empowerment mentor". Once I hear what a ladies' strength is and her dream, I lead her to pursue it.

I also find ladies and train them in the skills I possess. Even though I can't do what I once did, I can now provide someone else the tools, pave their way, and pass the torch. I find glory in seeing another woman well on her way to success. I realize now that my biggest success is the success of another. I have been at the top and now my job is ensuring all those I can empower, reach the top. I only ask of them to teach and empower another and to keep their communities enhanced. No matter what time of day, I am available, even on bad chemo days, a fellow woman, it is my inspiration as well as a joy to empower and teach. What is your personal goal for 2014? My personal goal for 2014 is to empower 10 women to learn new skills and/or open their own businesses. So far so good, I’m half way there. I also want to go into the homeless and low income areas and do some on site educational and personal trainings to prepare them for job searches. I am also an Army spouse and due to high statistics of homeless and displaced veterans in Houston area, in summer I plan to begin helping them apply to receive their VA and other benefits.

W

hat is your personal motto? I stand on the scripture Hosea 4:6 “Without knowledge I am just an empty vessel. Yet with knowledge and understanding, I'm an open book to help whom I've been placed here to help.

What inspires you? The next person who has been where I have been, who has gone where I am going and who has kicked down the doors whom others believe it could not been done. How do you use your talents/ company to give back to the community? I'm always giving back. I have two passions, one is to coach and the other is to teach. I've coached young ladies in volleyball for over 8 plus years and substitute taught for over 4 plus years. I love giving wisdom to the youth of today. When they hear that what they are going though is just a far cry from where they are going, their look at me in amazement makes it all worth doing. What is your personal goal for 2014? My personal goal for 2014 is to finish making Trailblazers In Motion a 501(c)3 company while working on finishing up my Masters degree in Psychology Counseling. I want to use my degree for ministry. I also want to have all three of my companies generating continuous revenue so that I can help provide scholarships for college and tech schools for those who are part of Trailblazers In Motion, in addition to completing my book to which I have been working on.

Kimberly Smith When I did that, I found purpose and healing from the scars that left me broken inside. I started becoming involved in organizations where I can sow seeds of healing and encouragement. Throughout my years at the University of Houston, I was involved with Star of Hope doing community service along with other community service activities throughout college. I used my writing talent to encourage and build others and speaking at various functions. After graduating, I began moving deeper into helping others. I initiated more community service and activities at Star of Hope conducting bible studies and encouraging those in the shelter.

P

ersevere until you get to the top is the quote that I live by. It would be nice to say I had a normal childhood and all was well, but that was not the case and I glad it wasn’t because I would not be as strong as I am. Growing up I did not know my father. I was rejected by him and never had a chance to experience the love of a natural father. My mother became ill when I was around the age of 7 and she was unable to care for me. With the events that happened with her, I was left pain that I carried all throughout my childhood which eventually lead to depression, suicidal attempts, self-mutilation, rage, low self-esteem, hospitalizations and me without a purpose not knowing the plan for my life. However; through the prayers of others, encouragement, and a God who loved and seen the purpose for my life, I was able to gradually come out of my dark pit and see light. I graduated from Milby High in 2002 and went on to graduate from the University of Houston in May 2007 with a Public Relations degree. This was just one of my big accomplishments. At 21, I fully gave my life to Christ and started building a relationship with the Lord.

I also worked with Covenant House Houston; working and mentoring youth ages 18 to 21, wanting to building and help the next generation. I also volunteered with the radio station KSBJ helping out at events. These activities along with God in my life pushed and helped me to become a better person and to achieve more and to really push through to be an example to others. I currently work for Metropolitan Transit Authority dedicating my time and planting more seeds of life and encouragement into others. I am also pursuing modeling and acting as a way to not only to use the talent that I have but be an example and a role model to the generation under me and those around me. As a model, I want not only to show beauty on the outside but beauty on the inside and I want others to see it. Many are broken, bruised, and hurt with no direction but that does not have to be so. Everyone possesses beauty and that beauty starts on the inside and then it can reflect on the outside and it can encourage and bless others. I have plans of starting a nonprofit geared towards helping those that are going to psychological and emotional issues because of their upbringings. The same healing I receive, I want to give to others. Many doors will open in other areas not only for me because it not about me at all. I have a purpose and that purpose is to help others and most importantly give glory to Jesus Christ because without Jesus, I didn’t want to live to see another day with all the pain. I have joy and peace and I am able to help others.

am a woman on a journey to remember, cultivate, and reclaim her feminine energy as it was truly meant to be embraced and lived. 13 years of marriage in 19 year relationship has gifted me with a dynamic husband, loving son, and ton of things to be worked out.

I've created a blog and Facebook group called 'Femininnergy: Nurture the Woman Within', where I and other women do the work of remembering, embracing, and honoring every aspect of ourselves, in relation to our femininity, with love, compassion, and authenticity. My focus is to remind women of how powerful they are, and that every aspect of who they are is necessary and vital. We are whole and we are enough. I encourage women to embrace their feminine essence and honor themselves to created synergy and balance their lives; to also share my awakenings, my lessons, and my journey in my blog www.femininnergy.blogspot.com. I embraced my natural hair over 12 years ago, before all the current support in social media became available. I learned to love my hair in its natural state, and became passionate about chemical-free, natural hair care. I developed every aspect of Allnaturallyou™ to support a natural lifestyle, not just for hair and body products, but for health and wellness enrichment. My products are composed of whole and naturally derived ingredients, each specifically chosen for its beneficial properties specific to each product. Melissa Gigante

M

elissa Gigante, author of missyg.com, can be summed up as a mother, wife, college student and fashion/personal style blogger.

Melissa comes from a big family where she is the eldest of five girls. Growing up, all Melissa ever wanted to do was teach. However, at the age of 16, she decided to try her hand at modeling and became certified at Mayo-Hill Centre for Modeling. However, Melissa decided that her passion for becoming a teacher was greater than modeling and pursued teaching instead. After graduating high school, Melissa worked for her local school district for 5 and a half years. After work hours, she attended Lonestar College part-time. During her time with the school district, Melissa married her high school sweetheart. At the age of 23, they welcomed their first and only baby to the world. After a semester of working and going to school full-time, she decided that being at home with her bundle of joy and finishing her degree was where she needed to be. Sad to leave her work family, she planned on returning with her degree, ready to teach when her son would become schoolage.

Of course, being a stay-at-home mommy and full-time student wasn’t enough to keep her busy. She started her own business selling clothes through the Poshmark app, where she now has over 11,000 followers. Last year, she was represented the Poshmark app on ABC’s Mirror Mirror, as one of the top sellers in the Houston area. Her passion for fashion was re-ignited by the fashionistas she met through her business and decided to begin fashion blogging. She hopes that by blogging, she can motivate women to use fashion and beauty as a way to enhance their natural beauty. Melissa works to empower women of various backgrounds to look, feel and ultimately do their best everyday. This past school year, Melissa earned her Associate of Arts in Teaching and will be attending the University of Houston - Downtown in the Fall. She will still be selling apparel on the Poshmark app, blogging on missyg.com and of course - taking care of her little family.

Jami Snider

I

have loved fashion ever since I was in elementary school. My mom taught me how to sew and it was up hill from there. I would stay up late at night working on an outfit so to have something new to wear for the next day. At fifteen I started asking my parents to purchase name brand clothing like the other kids at school.

I then met my husband. After we were married, we moved to Houston where I finished my fashion merchandising degree at Sam Houston in 2011. As a requirement of my degree I needed to do an internship. I chose Dillard’s and I have been working there for three years. I am currently a sales manager and love my job because everyday is different.

I was told if I wanted name brands I needed to get a job to pay for them. My first job was a hostess at a restaurant and I used every penny of each paycheck to fund my fashion obsession. That is when I realized that my passion was in is fashion and I would need to gain experience in the retail industry.

I get to dress mannequins, merchandise new collections, and my favorite, help customers find the perfect outfit for their special occasions. The reason I started my blog (Jstyleme) is because people were constantly asking me about my outfits, how to put certain things together, and commenting on how they love my style.

Out of high school I began working for Abercrombie & Fitch, which was amazing for me, not only because I got to spend all day changing mannequins and dressing customers, but because I also was fueling my passion for the fashion industry. This is what led me to choosing my college major. The choice was easy and started taking classes at Texas Tech. There I learned about merchandising, textiles, fashion history, fashion buying and retail.

My blog is a creative outlet for me and I enjoy pairing things together that most people wouldn’t normally think about. Whether it be mixing prints or layering a button-down under a dress. I hope my blog inspires others to not try and blend in but create their own fashion inspirations and try new things.

riginally from San Antonio, Texas, I moved to Houston, Texas after completing my Bachelor's degree in Health Education from Prairie View A&M University. I currently work in Marketing for Healthcare but aspire to have a career in Fash-

ion/PR in the near future. As a self- proclaimed fashionista and lover of all things fabulous, I started my blog, Urban Carrie, to fill the void of not currently working in the industry. It is a manifestation of my obsession with Fashion and Fun, and will one day become a lifestyle brand. Many ask where the name of my blog came from. Urban Carrie is a moniker I gave myself after noticing how much the character Carrie Bradshaw and I had in common and while also acknowledging our different backgrounds. The Urban Carrie Brand is about merging the person you have been your whole life with the person you aspire to become. My personal lifestyle goal is always about balance. I think many of my readers can relate to wanting to stay true to what made them who they are while creating and embracing new experiences that will shape their future.

Traci Lynn Fashion Jewelry has afforded me the opportunity to develop the leader in me which has given me the courage and strength to follow the path laid in front of me to open up other businesses soon. I would love for more women to look into Traci Lynn Fashion Jewelry, not only for the wonderful and affordable jewelry we offer but also for the wonderful leader development we offer as well. Candiss Spurlock By the age of 19, far from an expert but pretty good at hair braiding, Candiss realized she now had a sound side job. The extra money was always a bonus and that’s what kept her motivated. Realizing that she had an entrepreneurial spirit and after many hardships raising two kids on her own, Candiss decided to enroll into the local community college taking up Business Management in the year of 2005. While enrolled and still braiding (on the side) she also decided to attend Franklin Beauty College of Houston, Texas to obtain her braiding license because working out of her home and making house calls just wasn't cutting it.

C

andiss Spurlock, born Candiss Baker, was born on the island of Galveston, Texas. Growing up as a child she always had a love for hair, as she and her sister had a head full themselves. Candiss and her sister were responsible for maintaining their own hair for school because their mother would already be long gone for work by the time the alarm clock went off. Her mother couldn't afford to send them to the beauty salon, so she began to cut, style, and experiment with her own hair. This is when she realized, she actually may be good at it.

At the age of about 14 is when she really took an interest in hair braiding. Even though it was a frustrating and tedious process, Candiss began to visually take notes from her aunt Linda who has the gift of braiding hair. Not old enough to have a "real" job, Candiss would walk to a local salon after school and wash towels for a small paycheck of $50 every Friday for about 6 months. A year later Candiss found that she was expecting a child and became a mother to a beautiful baby girl, Chrishana, at the tender age of 15. But being a young teenage mom didn't stop her as she would find little odd end jobs and hustles to keep a little money in her pocket. At 16, as soon as she was old enough to legally work, Candiss got a job as a cashier at Popeye’s Chicken. After flipping between minimum wage pay, she realized that something had to give because she now had two young children to take care of.

At 17 she birthed yet another seed, this time a son, Chris Jr. She would book appointments for braid styles though she knew she had never tried half of them but her thoughts were you got to start somewhere (Smiles).

She thought that if she could get licensed she could work in a salon thus bringing in more money. She did just that! Soon after, she also took up Real Estate, becoming a Texas Realtor as well. She kept and still does keep many irons in the fire. She always says "If one hustle doesn't work, have another one to fall back on". By the year of 2012, she had worked in several salons already but that entrepreneur spirit in her reared its head again. With the help of her husband Cedrick, she opened her first salon Braids by Candiss, located at 1211 6th Street North in Texas City, Texas where she is a current resident. With business thriving things couldn't be better and with growing success Candiss is currently in the process of opening her second salon as there is no available space in her current location for established and up and coming stylist/ barbers that are ringing her phone with an interest of joining her growing team. With dedication, long dreadful work days, plenty of back aches and pains, giving back to the community by volunteering, hosting back to school supply drives and donations and also being an active member of the Career Technology Advisory Board (Cosmetology dept.) where her own daughter (now age 17) is a current cosmetology student, Candiss couldn't be in a better place in her life and career journey.

For her success, Candiss Spurlock, proud owner of Braids by Candiss and new salon Chos'n Handz Dual Salon, gives all the credit to her Father in Heaven, whom sits high and looks low. She is very, very grateful for the highs the lows, all lessons learned along the way and most of all her clients who've trusted and supported her talents, business and vision.

ethaniel Jefferson is a native of Huntsville, Texas. She has always dreamed of being a dentist since the eighth grade. To accomplish this mission; she studied hard throughout middle school, high school, & college. She was accepted into the University of Missouri-Kansas City during her junior year at Prairie View A& M University but chose to complete her undergraduate degree to have the "full college experience. Once graduating from UMKC in 2003, she returned back home to Texas & began her dental career. Dr. Jefferson knew that she always wanted to own a dental practice and to learn more about the business aspects of dentistry. She became an associate at multiple practices in the Conroe & Houston area. In 2007, the dream of becoming a business owner came true when an offer to purchase an existing practice was presented to her through an acquisition company. Diamond Dental changed the name of the dental office on March 1, 2007 and has been seeing patients from age 6 months and up. Diamond Dental became Diamond Dental & Fastbraces in 2009. Dr. Jefferson loves her career choice; especially the business aspects of running the company. With the help of her current manager, she plans to expand to include multiple locations in the Houston area. The mission of Diamond Dental & Fastbraces is "To provide all aspects of general dentistry to the public. Sheba Management, LLC also decorates for events at the theater and has a subsidiary company AWE. AWE was formed initially because Dr. Jefferson loves jewelry & feels that everyone should express themselves. She was looking for an economical way to make different types of jewels. She sold many of her pieces at the productions at Cranbrook Theater and has a site on facebook as well. In 2013, Transport Me, LLC was formed to offer patients a ride to medical & dental appointments but she has put that endeavor on hold. Dr. Jefferson has set up an endowment scholarship, The Vivian L. Jefferson Endowment Scholarship, in remembrance of her deceased sister who died of cancer at the age of 19 at her Alma mater, Prairie View A & M University, as well as contributes to her church ministry. Amongst all of her endeavors, dentistry is Dr. Jefferson's priority & she plans to form a nonprofit organization to assist those who need dental treatment but may not have all the means to receive it. Dr. Jefferson believes in hard work and knows that if you ask & believe, you shall receive.

She received the Distinguished Intern Award from the Honorable Judge Calvin Botley for her tenure as a Law Clerk in Houston, Texas; she worked for a large Texas Based law firm, Jackson Walker LLP; and clerked for Reliant Energy in the corporate legal department. Ms. Broussard is the author of "Ashcroft v. Free Speech Coalition: Legislators Push for Policy Direction to Protect the Age of Innocence While the Court Turns a Deaf Ear" and received numerous scholarships and awards during her law school tenure. In addition to operating a successful family law practice for the past eight years and raising a son who is a sophomore at a private college in the Northeast, Ms. Broussard is also an advocate for the rights of survivors of childhood sexual abuse. She has lent her voice to this terrifying issue to bring awareness to a topic that has lurked in the shadows of society and caused immeasurable damage to countless people.

Ms. Broussard joins her efforts with other survivors to dispel the myths surrounding childhood sexual abuse, encourage legislation that provides counseling and therapeutic services for victims, educates parents and caregivers to recognize the signs of sexual abuse, and that adequately punishes convicted offenders. The most controversial of Ms. Broussard's positions is her quest for legislative change, which entails No Statute of Limitations for Childhood Victims and No Second Chances for Convicted Pedophiles. She firmly believes the recidivism rate is too low and the risk to our children is too high. Ms. Broussard has authored her first novel titled, iComfortable Victim. The story is based on real events in her life, but told through a fictional lens. i-Comfortable Victim chronicles the life of Saxxine De La Croix, a young attorney destined for greatness who struggles with the soul stains caused by childhood sexual abuse. Ms. Broussard's book is published by Tate Publishing Company and will be available nationwide on September 9,2014. However, the book is available now at www.icomfortablevictim.com. Ms. Broussard's convictions and heart for survivors of childhood sexual abuse led her to create B'yond the Unveiling, a nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating childhood sexual abuse. The organization will provide comprehensive services for survivors whose lives have been derailed by undisclosed and unresolved childhood sexual abuse. B'yond the Unveiling seeks to provide a safe place for survivors to engage in open, continual, and nonjudgmental dialogue, which we believe is paramount to overall healing and restoration.

Jenn E. Having lost her father at 14, she had no choice but to start working to help her mother. This commitment to family is the same commitment that made her the 1st of her siblings to receive her Masters. When asked what she plans on accomplishing that she hasn’t, “Taking over the world!” She says in a playful way. I wouldn’t bet against her.

E

ntertainment should not have to be dirty to be fun, is the foundation on which Jennifer Ekeoba founded JEKEO Creativ. Not just a publishing company, not just a media entity but a movement! The daughter of a hard working mother and immigrant father Jennifer saw firsthand what it was like to be denied certain opportunities. Using her B.A in Media Relations and Global Business from the University of Houston and M.B.A in Strategic Management she plans on giving authors that haven’t had an opportunity a voice. The first release is the highly anticipated series My Funny Valentine. With a rare combination of a corporate mind, faith and a passion for writing Jennifer Ekeoba and JEKEO Creativ is poised to kick down doors. It may sound cliché to say success is what drives Jennifer Ekeoba but to frame it any other way wouldn’t do the talented 30yr old entrepreneur from Houston, TX justice. “When I experience challenges and I am at the point of giving in I remember that God doesn’t put more on us than we can bear and my faith is renewed.” J ennifer founded JEKEO Creativ with the concept that novels, movies and television shows can be entertaining, riveting and jaw dropping while still being wholesome. “It takes more talent to write without using excessive cursing and sex as a crutch. Myself and my writers will create stories that reinforce morals, values, inspire others and spread God’s word.”

Having a father from Lagos, Nigeria, his immigration status stopped him from reaching the American dream but that dream lives on in his daughter. “When I was 10 my father sat me down and told me I’d be the leader of my family. He made me promise to watch my three sisters and baby brother and look out for them. He saw how strong I was before I saw it in myself, that’s why everything I do is in honor of him.” Ask anyone about Jennifer they’ll tell you she’s shy, a little goofy but more than anything they’ll tell you she’s a great friend. “If God has allowed me to be able to help someone, no matter if it’s financially, an offer of spiritual encouragement or jut a hug, I’m willing to do that. I would definitely want someone to do that for me.” Jennifer Ekeoba didn’t wake up one day with a story to tell or decide she wanted to give writing a try. She wrote her first short story at five years old, having her sister’s act out her characters. In high school she won 1st place in the NAACP ACT-SO competition. For Jennifer starting JEKEO Creativ is the continuation of a journey that started when she was just a child. Knowing the importance of not just having a dream but financing it Jennifer put her publishing and writing aspirations to the side to climb the corporate ladder as an HR Professional at NOV Wilson. Learning the importance of managing personalities and budgets combined with pursuing her M.S in Publishing from the University of Houston- Victoria she felt now was the perfect time to put all that she’s learned together and live up the expectations her father saw in her so long ago.

Jessica Cooper

M

ommynization was birthed from lessons I learned through my own journey. After marrying, I became an instant mom to two wonderful boys and soon afterward had two wonderful children of my own. Though I had a stable job, lovely home, and great marriage, I still found myself one day saying "There's gotta be more!" After much contemplation, I discovered that the business of life--working, wifing, and mommying, and trying to balance the demands of work, home, and blending families-- caused me to sidetrack from some of the most important values and goals I had developed prior to motherhood. I sat down one day and created a revised vision for myself and family, and started setting goals in place to recapture what I let slip along the way. As I began joining my revived values with my current roles, I discovered that it was demanding work. It would have been much easier to remain in the routine of simply performing the responsibilities I loved, centered around my kids, job, and family, than to challenge myself to simultaneously go after my passions and goals. But after meaningful work with my life coach, I discovered that true fulfillment in my life would only come as a result of me not only fulfilling my roles, but by centering my life around my highest values, goals and passions. I set on a mission to ensure that our household was functioning according to our values, and began to set in place systems to get us more organized, so that I could use the free time organization created to pursue my passions! Out of those systems was birthed “Mommynization!” I knew that if these systems could be reduplicated, they would help countless other moms who feel they have lost touch with some part of themselves along their journey through motherhood. They have worked for me, and I know they will work for you too in finding fulfillment, organization, & entrepreneurial success! Take the leap of faith into your life’s passions and purpose with me, and I’ll help you on your own journey to Mommynization! For more information, visit www.mommynizat.com.

Elizabeth Dimopoulos

O

ne day I just decided I wanted to turn my childhood dreams into something real. Growing up I used to draw sketches and had aspirations of becoming a fashion designer. I never took advantage of pursuing a career so by opening my own boutique I created an outlet to disperse my vision on style and fashion. I believe beauty starts within oneself. When you feel good about yourself it reflects in your attitude. This can be contagious. When you do things out of the kindness of your heart, you inspire others. When you treat people with respect, those around you take notice. Don’t wait for permission to follow your dreams. You must first believe in and support yourself. Don’t let others discourage you, this is not their journey.

Alissa Jones

T

he S.W.V. Foundation was single-handedly pushed by its founder Alissa Rachelle Jones for a solid year before taking the next step in marketing. With the energy of just she and her husband Robbin Jones – the self-proclaimed biggest Alissa Jones fan – the Bonnie and Clyde pair have taken the country by storm; with a generated following that numbers into the tens of thousands. A support circuit that stretches across Texas into the upper Midwest (Ohio and Illinois), The S.W.V Foundation is taking names and changing lives with its declaration against mental and physical abuse – bar none. No other charity is doing what these guys are doing. Alissa Jones took all the pent up bitterness she had toward a mother who failed to protect her, a house guest who sexually assaulted her, and the men that subsequently lied, cheated and stole from her; and accomplished two things simultaneously. She wrote a controversial best seller, The Stones that Built Me Strong and started a foundation that allows women to give voice to their pain. Women can take part in support groups for mentoring and development skills, and become a legitimate author through the publishing company, Survivors with Voices Publishing. Alissa Jones not even realizing what she had done, created a ground breaking platform that allows women to bear the true mark of a survivor – the ability to effectively tell a story of survival. No other platform is allowing women to take back their authority through authorship. Alissa Jones is running a serious campaign to better society as a whole. The S.W.V. Foundation is partnering with municipalities, other non-profits that support battered women, rehab facilities, shelters, book stores and more to transform the victim into survivor. DON’T QUIT By Faye Carter

F

or the second time I failed a very important test that would increase my salary significantly. I was so discouraged that I decided not to ever retake this test again. Stick a fork in me and the whole wide world could see that I was done. I was done with the endless hours of studying and the long intensifying hours of testing (four to be exact). I had convinced myself with negative words and thoughts to move on and settle for less. In the meantime, family and friends were asking how did I do; did I pass the test? My facial expression alone answered that I had failed and was no way interested in taking the test again. Although I had given up on myself, my family had not. They believed in me and insisted that it was an absolute must that I retest. Friends followed suit with their unexpected calls and rebuilt my torn down confidence. Moreover, Sunday morning’s sermon spoke volumes of staying in the fight and not quitting because there’s an appointed time for victory. Life is full of failures, but I like to believe that there are far more victories. Family, friends, and church rekindled my faith not to quit rather take the test again even if it is for the third time. What’s causing you to quit today? Was it a bad date? Well, go on another one, there’s more fish in the sea. Your marriage on the brink? Go back to the basics and discover love again. Experiencing children drama? Love unconditionally and extend grace and more grace. Having problems on your job? Consider going back to school, it could open doors to a host of new opportunities. Struggling with finances? Simply put, spend less on wants. Whatever the case may be that’s causing you to quit, don’t. Although you’ve failed, hang tough, fight, and stay in the race. The race is not given to the swift or the strong but to those who endures to the end (Ecclesiastes 9:11). Surround yourself with good positive speaking people. Don’t hesitate to distant yourself from those who are filled with negativism. Family, friends and church are there to motivate you to never settle for less and to never quit. The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again (Proverbs 24:16).

My Funny Valentine Not Everything that Glitters is Gold

Today is Kenya Jones’ twenty-seventh birthday. Her family and friends are excited to celebrate her special day but Kenya would rather the day like any other day. The wholesome voluptuous baby-faced, psychology doctoral student, is excelling in her studies at Houston’s Baylor College of Medicine but her birthday is a reminder of another year as a unexciting medical student. Her big day is filled with a makeover given to her by her friends and a birthday dinner organized by her incessantly overprotective big brother Paul. Her family and friends’ motive for the celebration is to pull the introverted Kenya out of a perceived depressed mood. Her girlfriends also encourage dating again but Kenya is not interested. Her reluctance for a new beau is due to her horrific experience in an abusive relationship. She believed that there were no men worth giving her heart to. That is until she meets the man of her fantasies—Lawrence Washington. Lawrence Washington is one of her brother’s old college buddies. He is a high profile corporate attorney known for his charm and killer smile. He doesn’t intend to be in attendance at Kenya’s dinner but finds himself there after previous plans with one of his many meaningless liaisons falls through. When Lawrence sees the newly made over sexy Kenya, he is instantly taken with her. Kenya is enchanted with Lawrence but unbeknownst to her the manipulative and power hungry playboy has many well-hidden demons stemming from a fractured relationship with his father, failed relationships, excessive drinking and deteriorating spiritual faith.
