On the Radar ░ SPOTLIGHT

We love your style! How do you define fashion? I define fashion as a statement of your personality. It’s your individuality and it speaks to who you are before you ever say a word. I was always taught that first impressions are lasting impressions and that is so true. My company motto is “Fabulous is a Feeling”; so it’s what you exude inside that shows on the outside in your image and dress. Its how you’re defined in today’s society. How would you describe your personal style? Kind of hard to say. I rock so many different styles it just depends on how I’m feeling or what I have planned for the day. Of course I do the trendy styles, boho chic, street style, and professional with my own twist of course. I always want my personality to show in my style, so I don’t do boring looks. I like to be me and I like to make a statement in my dress.

Shawn Chenelle Preston CEO & Lead Consultant at Shawn Chenelle Fashion Consultants What services do you provide for your clients? We offer several complete packages. We discuss a client’s present lifestyle, career, budget, and other factors that contribute to their personal style needs. From there, we determine which package is most suitable. With our “Closet Overhaul” we go through the client’s present wardrobe (clothing, accessories, shoes, handbags) and teach them ways to make the most of what they already own, we determine which pieces are just taking up space, and what staple pieces need to be added to the wardrobe. For the client that likes to shop we have a package called “Shopping with the Stylist” where we will go together to shop for the best items to bring their wardrobe to the next level and help them realize their style potential. This client learns which silhouettes, colors, and styles work best and where to find them. For the client that just despises shopping or doesn’t have the time they need a “Personal Shopper”. I use my expertise to select items on their behalf and have them held at the store. Clothes will be ready for the client to try on when they arrive and together we’ll select the best items for their purchase. We also do styling for special occasions, events, and photo shoots. What inspires you when styling a client? Each client is different so I get my inspiration from the stories they tell me and their personality. Once we have a consultation and they tell me the goal they want to achieve or the reason they have not been concerned with their image or style, the inspiration is in making sure I meet every need and that I have a satisfied client in the end.

How big of a role does confidence play in fashion? Confidence is huge! To step outside the box, to wear different styles, or even wear the classic styles you have to be confident that you can carry the style no matter what. The confidence you possess is what will set you apart if you enter the room wearing the same dress as the next lady. You will either rock it or be intimidated. Confidence allows you to set yourself apart, to take chances in what you wear, to be trendy

How do you encourage your clients to step outside of their comfort zone to try new colors and clothing styles? It’s all about building trust. I don’t believe you can ask anyone to do anything if they don’t trust you and feel comfortable with you. Once that trust is gained, they understand I’m there to work for them and we are working towards the same goal, it makes the resistance to change easier. What’s been the most rewarding part of your career? The most rewarding moments are when I see the sparkle in my client’s eyes when they look at themselves after a session. To hear a client say “I look pretty” or “I feel pretty”. To get texts that say “my look was a hit” or “my husband loved it” those are the rewarding moments for me. I love when my clients are happy!

░ INSPIRATION

The Power of Mindfulness Resolving to be a Better You By Shareefah Muhammad

W

ith the advent of a New Year upon us, many are preparing their lists of resolutions. However, in order to resolve something, one must make a decision to make up one's mind or to change. It is the key to being successful in making a change for the better. Though we say the greatest gift bestowed upon us is life itself, the way we steward it sometimes does not reflect that. We must ask ourselves this question, "How am I taking care of it? What am I doing to show forth my appreciation for such a wonderfully divine gift?" By addressing the needs of the mind that directs the physical body, we have the power to overcome any obstacle stifling our resolve. In a book titled “The Force and Power of Being“ by Dr. Ava Muhammad, she emphasizes the significance of the mind with these words; "Since the body houses the spirit and the mind, the body is also a treasure overlooked. It is the most valuable, most elegant creation we possess in the physical world. It cannot be ignored, because it is the embodiment of all that is in our consciousness."

In essence, whatever works you produce originated with a thought in your mind. What are we feeding our minds so that our resolves in our endeavors will be guaranteed success? Remember when we fail to accomplish a task we set for ourselves, it is not because someone else interfered, it is because we allowed ourselves to get in the way and denied the power within to master that moment.

In essence, whatever works you produce originated with a thought in your mind. Let's take the time this season to reflect on what we need to strengthen our internal essence. Let's not get caught up in the latest gossip, reality shows, and other energy draining activities that we may take better notice of that inner voice and manifest our greatest triumph of living the best life we could ever imagine. Why not start today! You don't have to wait for tomorrow. Take off the old mind-set and put on the new!

░ EMPOWERMENT

Featured Blogger Connie Gomez The Total Beauty Expo

I

say this all the time. I love meeting new people. A lot of the people who I have met in recent years are a direct result of this blog. I never know what to expect of people who you meet online because well there are not so good stories about the world wide web. Fortunately, I have met not only extremely nice people but more importantly, women who have made great impacts in my life and mind.

Society has set standards and clothes size that we have, for the most part, allowed to define what total beauty means or how it’s represented.

I attended the Total Beauty Expo created and run by the beautiful Shunte Davis of Total Beauty Ladies Events. She is also the creator of Beautifully Being U Magazine.

What does total beauty mean to me and how I choose to view it?

As I sat and took in the show I also started to think; what does it mean to have "Total Beauty"?

As women we tend to be very hard on ourselves, I know that personally I tend to be very hard on myself. Especially now as a Momma. Growing into who I am and owning my style, body image and who I truly want to be has been a process.

I believe that the following characteristics create total beauty.

::Attitude:: Who we are is represented by our attitude. How we carry ourselves and interact with others. Being confident and knowing that no matter what size or skin color we are, we are all beautiful.

All photos by Connie Gomez

Attitude is not only a feeling deep inside of us but it’s also seen when we go out in public, the way we dress, how we own our body image, and feel. If I feel confident about my size, my hair, and my skin color, then others will perceive me as a beautiful and confident woman. On the other hand, if I act as if I am not important and doubt myself, that too will show and people can see that. 36 Visit BBUmagazine.com | January-March 2015

::Strength:: As women, we are somehow given some of the most difficult jobs and tasks in life. We build not only courage and character but also strength. That strength is notable in our actions, our words, and who we choose to be around. Usually, it is other strong women who can encourage us and build us up. It's that inner strength that grows as the difficult days pile upon us, that we learn to push forward and rise above the deepest obstacles. Strength has been a force and a propeller in my life. Just when I think I am weakest, something happens within me that allows me to prove to myself that I am not only growing in strength daily but stronger now than I have ever been.

::Self Love /Respect:: I cannot tell you enough how much we should love and respect ourselves. These are two other characteristics that also shine through our being; how we chose to live our lives, and how we carry ourselves. Most importantly, the more we love ourselves the more our confidence grows. When we are confident we respect ourselves and in return others will respect us as well. Ladies love yourself, respect yourself. How does this transcend into Latina Empowerment or Women Empowerment as a whole, no matter what race you are? I think that we can all be personally responsible as a momma, a friend, an aunt, a cousin, and so much more. We are role models for the young ladies and women around us. We can teach them these characteristics that will empower them to constantly know that they too can learn to be strong, independent women. That they can be confident women who can achieve anything they set their mind to. That we believe in them and their dreams!

░ COUNSELOR’S CORNER

Seasons Change By Faye Carter

W

inter, spring, summer, and fall are marked by their particular seasonal change. Likewise, life can be marked by particular seasonal changes. Whether new seasons arrive or seasons fade away, they are both times of change. Friendships change, relationships change, and careers change. Ten time Grammy Award winning American musician and singer-songwriter George Benson expressed it best with his song “Everything Must Change”. In Texas we get crazy weather. I’ve experienced multiple weather conditions in a single day. In the midst of December, I’ve awaken to hot summer like weather, at noon cool spring like weather, then at night frosty winter weather. Our crazy weather reminds me of some friendships I’ve had in the past. Today, I’m their “ boo”, but tomorrow I’m their enemy. Why? Was it because of jealousy, pride, or for control? I’ve learned that friends are planted for a season and when that season is over it’s a done deal. Out of season friends are like carrying dead weight which can hinder one from moving forward. Now, I’m not talking about genuine and authentic friendships, I’m talking about those who are planted with their own agendas. Think about it this way, have you ever tried to carry around a hundred and fifty-five pound person? The load is heavy and the same can be said carrying around friends past their season. Relationships are often times seasonal too although many fail to realize it. It’s not uncommon for women to have insecurities both emotionally and financially in relationships. Insecurities that whisper unhealthy thoughts that they cannot live or breathe without a man. I know because I had that same unhealthy mentality. The truth was, I was insecure with an intense longing to be loved and validated by a man. I didn’t realize this about myself until I received a telephone call one night. After I turned down an invitation to a party from a man who was given my number, he grew very rude and proceeded to curse me out. I was so mad and humiliated. Is this how men perceived me; as a party girl? Ultimately, God hit the switch and exposed me to the truth that a relationship with him is fulfilling, unending, and so many more wonderful things.

Sometimes as women, we believe we cannot survive financially without a man. Here’s a tip; it’s never too late to improve your skills. At the age of fifty-six I went back to college and my friend, Ms. L. , was sixty-four. Upon graduation we both marched with high honors. If you feel you don’t have the time or funds to go back to school, there are many online universities, community colleges, and trade schools around. They’ve made attending school so easy. You can take courses on-line in the comfort of your own home. Grants, scholarships, financial aid, and loans are available at your fingertips. Take advantage of new seasons and explore all the doors of opportunity that are opening for you in 2015. Continue to step out in faith because you have what it takes to be successful. For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord,

“plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). 39
