Welcome
WELCOME FROM THE EDITOR Dear Reader and Supporter, Welcome to the first special issue of BEAUTY, a publication launched by The Safety in Beauty Campaign, to mark our three year anniversary as a public safety campaign.
For those of you unfamiliar with Safety in Beauty, the campaign was launched in October 2013, as a response to the growing dissatisfaction and devastation caused by dubious beauty and cosmetic treatments and providers. As a campaign, our endeavour is to help raise awareness on social media, of unsafe practices and activities that may potentially pose harm or risk to members of the public. Our mission is to empower you to make safer and better informed choices. We all deserve to look and feel our best, but not at the price of unscrupulous practitioners or unsafe activities. We are proud to launch this first special issue in the centre of England, namely, the beautiful
West Midlands, home to a vast array of elite beauty, cosmetic, aesthetic, and surgical specialists, all dedicated to passionately helping you look and feel your best. Your body, your face, and your health, is the most precious investment you can make for yourself, so please, take your time and research before choosing any provider of any treatment or procedure. We truly welcome your support and feedback and look forward to connecting with you on twitter @SafetyinBeauty

About Safety In Beauty
ABOUT SAFETY IN BEAUTY l Launched
in 2013, The Safety in Beauty Campaign was created to protect those seeking and undergoing cosmetic and beauty procedures, by empowering safer and better-informed choices, and by giving the public a place to turn to if standards or services proved harmful. There is very little regulation currently in the UK to oversee the beauty and aesthetic industry. Everybody has the right to look and feel their best, but not at the cost of unscrupulous activities or individuals. Our campaign is working tirelessly to influence change, so that a safer, and more transparent industry can exist in the near future. We have worked hard to give the public access to legal, emotional and physical support. There is currently no other resource Botched Surgery Abroad
The People’s Voice
in the UK, that can offer the public such a pathway, and we are proud to have created one. The campaign is supported by volunteers, all of whom are professionals in their fields of respective expertise, ranging from medical, psychological, and legal specialty. We are proud to state that our organization is entirely self-funded; we do not rely on the public to sustain our work or endeavours. Our Campaign received 187 complaints between October Botched Cosmetic Injections
2014 and October 2015, with lip injections and dermal fillers being a primary area of concern. Complaints also covered a broad range of concerns, from unhygienic premises, fake machinery and devices, to substandard treatments, by under qualified individuals. If you know somebody that has been a victim to any of these complaints, please do contact us, there is support, We’d love to read your tweets about our publication: @SafetyInBeauty We look forward to celebrating another three years of fantastic work and support for the public.

n the ever growing beauty industry (Transparency Market Research) predicts that the market will reach over $7.1bn by 2020 alone), consumers are faced with more and more options when it comes to everything. From supplements to treatments, products to surgery, the options available are vast. With this in mind, it’s no surprise that consumers are becoming savvier and savvier - looking for more ways to enhance
their beauty routine with a skincare supplement - working from the inside out. However, with an already crowded market, many newcomers are confused about how these supplements work and which options are right for them. When it comes to collagen, the two most common delivery methods are either tablets or liquids - each working very differently to deliver collagen to the body. The main difference that separates liquids and tablets is the absorption rate of ingredients. The Physicians Desk Reference puts the absorption rate of tablets at between 1020% as opposed to liquids, which are listed at a much higher absorption rate of over 95%. The reason for this huge discrepancy is that, while nutrition drinks in solution can pass through the lining of the stomach and enter the bloodstream directly, pills and tablets must pass through

the digestive system where a great deal of the ingredients are simply passed through the body without being properly absorbed. Another key difference is the mode of absorption and how this affects the collagen you are trying to absorb. While collagen tablets are broken down into their base amino acids by the digestive system, in a drink like Skinade, the collagen avoids this fate by being directly absorbed into the bloodstream. In fact, this process happens from the second the liquid enters your mouth. An equally important consideration is ease of use and digestion. Tablets can often be difficult to digest, especially for those with sensitive stomachs or poor digestive systems. It is also significantly easier to drink your nutrition than try to swallow handfuls of hard pills. With the difference in absorption rates, you would need to take at least 20 large pills to match the same levels of collagen found in just one bottle of Skinade. “Research shows the difference in absorption rates mean 20 collagen pills equate to the levels of collagen found in one bottle of Skinade.” In conversation with Cosmetic Surgeon, Dr Paul Banwell said, “For improved efficacy, the skin supplement needs to be absorbed appropriately; this is dependent upon both its bioavailability of the supplement and molecular weight of the collagen. To maximise the bioavailability and benefits of collagen, it

is critical that the total product is completely in solution and that the molecular weight of collagen is as small as possible. The smaller the molecular weight, the more likely it is to be absorbed into the bloodstream. So there you have it, in a simple nutshell, research shows liquid skincare supplements are much more efficient at delivering their ingredients into the bloodstream, so, all that remains now is for you to try some out for yourself. e doubt Kylie Jenner herself could have imagined that the world would become obsessed with lip fillers after she decided to have her lips injected at the tender age of 17. Her pout is now so famous that it is coveted by women everywhere and has even resulted in her launching a range of uber successful lip kits. There is no denying that the teenager has considerable influence, in particular on young girls who admire her flawless appearance and glamorous lifestyle. Her lips even sparked the dangerous ‘shot glass’ craze, where those wanting the bee stung lips effect would place their mouth over the opening of a cup or glass and suck in until the air vacuum caused their lips to swell up. It could be said that her lips were the making of her - they certainly contributed to her being catapulted into the limelight. As a consequence of her lips she is now as widely followed on social media as her older sisters the Kardashians, and attracts almost as much press attention after previously being somewhat in their shadow. But what would make such a young girl want to alter her appearance in that way? Kylie was already beautiful, but seemed to want a more unnatural appearance to her lips. Her lip fillers were not subtle ones and yet for a year she denied she had undergone any injections at all until she finally admitted to the procedure on an episode of
Keeping up with the Kardashians. Although the shot glass craze was of course not Kylie’s fault, her denying she had lip-fillers possibly lead some to believe that her pout was achievable via less invasive methods. Kylie’s decision to have lip fillers no doubt left many parents despairing, as their similar- age daughters were desperate to emulate her. Lip fillers, as with any cosmetic intervention, are not without risk, and of course, her
decision to undergo them at such a young age was controversial. There was much debate as to whether Kylie was old enough to make the decision for herself and also much criticism of her new look. Kylie has since admitted that she went overboard when she first underwent fillers in 2014, admitting her pout was initially way over the top. That did not stop thousands of women wanting to replicate her look however.

THERE ARE SEVERAL OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO THOSE WANTING TO PLUMP UP THEIR POUTS.
LIP FILLERS n Fuller lips with more definition can be achieved in less than half an hour with lip fillers. At a cost of around £200 to £300 depending on how much filler is required, lip fillers can help restore natural fullness lost in the ageing process as well as give fuller lips to anyone wishing to add shape, structure and volume to their lips. Lip fillers are the most common type of lip augmentation and are most commonly made from Hyaluronic Acid. The effects of lip fillers typically last around six months. After that more injections are needed to keep the volume of lips. There are several hyaluronic acid fillers on the market, such as Restylane and Juvéderm, Teoysal Kiss. All hyaluronic acid fillers are injected the same way and give similar results, some also contain lignocaine, a local anesthetic. The benefits of Hyaluronic Acid Fillers are that once injected,
the gel in the filler supports and shapes the tissues of the lip enabling the practitioner to control the amount of lip volume that is created. These types of fillers can also be dissolved should something go wrong - using a special enzyme called Hyalase. This does not mean that there are no side effects: it is not unusual for those undergoing injections to suffer bruising and a degree of swelling, and some people find that lip fillers can be painful. It is imperative to check the credentials of anyone you allow to perform an aesthetic intervention. They must be skilled, qualified and experienced. Avoid the temptation to save money by opting for a special offer. It is possible that someone offering a too good to be true offer is not qualified or experienced to carry out the procedure. It is always better to opt for someone reputable. Saving a few pounds is not worth the risk of having your face permanently disfigured. And do not, however big the temptation, try and inject fillers yourself. A YouTube tutorial can never, ever be a substitute for a qualified professional.
WHAT THE EXPERT SAYS n After twenty years of experience in the medical industry and dermal fillers, Sandra Fishlock is Managing Director of Teoxane UK. Sandra gives her 5 top tips to help you achieve a safer experience when it comes to choosing quality filler products for lip enhancement treatments. 1. Ask what is in the syringe, hyaluronic acid is a natural component found in the body. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are widely recognised as being safe and predictable. 2. Ask your practitioner about longevity. Hyaluronic Acid dermal fillers are temporary and reversible, making them the safest option for lip volumisation. 3. Ask about the brand. Reputable companies manufacture at GMP standards and will have a history of millions of syringes injected worldwide. 4. Ask about the practitioners experience with the product, hyaluronic acid for the lips are usually designed specifically for this area. 5. Ask to see the box. As the product is a medical device, one syringe should be used per patient, if the syringe is not freshly unboxed in front of you, ask to have a new one. E

SURGERY n For a more permanent fix, implants made from saline or silicone can be injected into the lips, or alternatively fat can be grafted from elsewhere on the body and injected into the lips. Costing much more at around £2,000 - £3,000 these implants can be more problematic to remove should something go wrong. There is a possibility that the lip might become infected or that the graft may not take and may have to be removed. There is the possibility of infection, hardening and scarring with the silicone implants, and also the possibility of an allergic reaction leading to redness, itching and tenderness. This is rare and can be treated by removing the implant. Implants are beneficial to those who don’t want to spend few hundred pounds once or twice a year on fillers. Again, you must thoroughly research the procedure and your surgeon before undergoing any lip implant surgery. Recovery from surgery takes around a month. Although the implants are “permanent” some reabsorption will likely occur over time but it is likely that more than half of the implant will remain.
WHAT THE EXPERT SAYS DALVI HUMZAH Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeon Birmingham “Lip enhancement from a surgical standpoint – there are some options including autologous soft tissue grafting – fat transfer and dermafat grafting. The latter has been used in reconstructive procedures. Lip show and shortening can be performed by procedures such as lip lifts and vermillion lifts, which are suitable in the older population. Surgical lip implants (Permalip) is a silicone based implant that is easily inserted under local anaesthetic (and can be easily removed. The older Gortex implants are not used now.) For more information on lip enhancement surgery visit www.pdsurgery.co.uk
leading to a more pillowlike look, plumping products have come a long way in the last few years. Many contain peptides that boost the body’s ability to produce collagen that will plump up the lips over time; others contain products like menthol, which increases microcirculation leading to better blood flow to the lips. Many find these products to be effective, if short-lasting.
LIP PLUMPING DEVICES n There are many bizarrelooking contraptions on the market that claim to plump up lips. Most are suction type devices that claim to increase the blood flow to the area and subsequently a plumper effect. They can be quite effective in temporarily increasing the size of the lips thanks to the vacuum effect of the device, and have the added bonus of being available from only a few pounds. Examples are Fullips (www.fullips.com). These devices are certainly preferable to cups and glasses that can shatter and break.
LIP PLUMPING PRODUCTS n For those wanting less invasive means of plumping up their lips, there are several products on the market that will help do this. From lip plumping glosses available from around £10, to more expensive products claiming to plump out wrinkles

ICONIC POUTS P
re Kylie, it was the allnatural lips of Angelina Jolie that were coveted far and wide. With perhaps the most famous pout ever, the American beauty has never needed any surgical help and her pout is arguably the barometer by which all other pouts are measured. Seemingly a fan of lip-gloss rather than lipstick, Angelina’s full-lipped look has spawned thousands of You Tube tutorials teaching us lesser mortals how to replicate her famous full-lipped look. Actress and model Megan Fox also has enviable full lipped pout. She never misses an opportunity
to show it off and uses her lips’ potent power to the fullest. And who could forget actress Brigitte Bardot? In her 60s heyday, the actress’ lips attracted as
much attention as her films. Perpetual trendsetter Rihanna also has a perfect pout. Not shy of showcasing bright lipstick shades, Rihanna’s lips are always perfectly presented. She can rock gothic deep purples as well as girlie peach colours, and never puts a foot wrong. Her very own MAC shade is testament to the Barbadian star’s lusted after lips. Then there’s a definite mention needed for CubanAmerican beauty Eva Mendes. There are many things that men (and women!) adore about the actress, not least her full, kissable lips.

LIP FACTS u Did you know that lips are one of the most sensitive organs in the human body? They have more than a million nerve endings but they do not have any kind of defensive membrane for protection.
Did you know that your lips grow thinner as you grow old? This happens because with ageing, the collagen production of body decreases. Collagen is a vital protein and one of its functions is to give shape to the lips. Reduced production of collagen implies that lips start losing their plumpness. u
Did you know that lips do not sweat? That’s because lips do not possess sweat glands. Well, sweat glands play a crucial role of moisturising the skin and since lips don’t have sweat glands they dry out faster than any other part of the body. u

3 BEAUTY TREATMENTS CELEBRITIES LOVE! BEAUTY spent a day in the hectic schedule of Mac Aesthetics Clinic with Managing Director Rebecca McDermott. Rebecca’s fast growing empire now has two impressive clinic locations firmly notched under her belt, including Manchester and Birmingham. The energetic and dynamic cosmetic nurse and independent prescriber is a favourite amongst some celebrities. We asked Rebecca to give us the low down on what are hottest must-have aesthetic procedures on most celebrities shopping lists. Describe your typical working day A typical working day would consist of a very busy clinic, with between fifteen to twenty five clients being consulted with or being treated. In any given day we will carry out numerous different types of treatments, ranging from cosmetic injectables, to skin treatments, intravenous vitamin therapy or 3D Lipo. We try to make our clients feel as welcome and relaxed as possible despite the clinical environment. We have a large existing client base, and so our clinics are often full of lovely regulars, we do also get lots of new clients weekly, and of course some of our lovely celebrity clients too. Safety means a lot to me as a professional, so I am constantly reading, researching, attending conferences, and learning about the latest develops in the industry, to offer my clients, I want to give them the best, so I make
I like to offer my customers the latest procedures and treatments, here are three that seem to be very popular in my clinics especially amongst our lovely celebrity clients.

time to listen to what my clients are saying, and deliver each person a bespoke approach. It is so important for customers to take time to research a reputable medically qualified professional when undergoing any kind of invasive treatment. Price should never be the determining factor in any cosmetic treatment, and a good professional should know, when to say no to a client, sometimes we do get asked some very unrealistic demands, personally, I would rather say no, than risk a result that isn’t fresh, natural and safe for my clients.
What is it? A procedure involving the strategic injection of dermal fillers. How does it work? Hyaluronic acid is particularly placed into parts of the lips and surrounding areas to enhance, shape or add volume to the lips and reduce surrounding wrinkles. Who is it ideal for? People who want to enhance the appearance of thin, aged or asymmetrical lips. What are the benefits? Hyaluronic acid is a safe, natural product & the effects can be reversed if required. What are the possible risks or side effects? Swelling and bruising are common side effects, and can happen to the most skilled professional so be

aware. Vascular compromise, necrosis, and infection are less common risks and are the potential complications of such procedure. You should read all the risks, side effects and possible complications in your clinic consultation consent forms. Which celebrities like lip enhancement treatments? We have treated many celebrities including Katie Price, Marnie Simpson & Charlotte Crosby (Geordie Shore) along with a number of The Only Way is Essex cast members. What is the cost? Cost can vary, this is very much dependent upon how much product an individual may require. We recommend a natural enhancement using 1ml, which can usually range between £195-250.
2. LED FACIAL What is an LED facial? A new cutting-edge anti-ageing device for youthful looking skin. How does it work? The LED mask uses 145 LED’s (light emitting diodes) to stimulate the facial cells, which help to rejuvenate the skin. Who is it ideal for? The mask features three distinctive colours which all have their own proven and unique benefits. The mask is therefore ideal for people who have particular concerns regarding their skin (IE pigmentation, acne, scarring) or for anybody who is wanting general skin rejuvenation. What are the benefits? Alongside general skin rejuvenation, benefits of an LED mask treatment also include wrinkle reduction, increased
collagen, and large pores being reduced, LED facials can also prevent oily skin. What are the possible risks or side effects? The theory is extremely safe as it does not give harmful radiation and heat. It does not damage skin, has no known side effects and no recovery time. Which celebrities like this? We have treated Katie Price, Danielle Lloyd, Lillie Lexie, Chloe Ferry and Gaz Beadle (Geordie Shore). This treatment is also frequently used in America and is very popular with the Kardashians. What is the cost? One session may average around £75. We would recommend a course of at least 3 sessions
3. 3D LIPO What is 3D Lipo? A revolutionary, non-surgical alternative to traditional liposuction. How does it work? The machine we use in clinic is the new state of the art version called Lipo med. This has functions which are all completely safe and deliver a non-invasive methods of localised fat reduction. Who is it ideal for? This is ideal for individuals with stubborn fatty
pockets, loose skin and cellulite. What are the benefits? The lymphatic system in our body allows us to continue to naturally dispose of the dead fat cells over several weeks and months. The treatment is also pain free. The different methods can be used to tighten skin, remove fat cells and also for body contouring without the need for surgery. What are the possible risks or side effects? Although uncommon, redness of the skin can occur, as can a temporary change in skin temperature to the treated area, sometimes also tingling. Which celebrities like this? Katie Price, Danielle Lloyd, and Lillie Lexi, all had 3D Lipo at our Birmingham clinic with fabulous results. Cost? The cost of 3D Lipo can completely range from clinic to clinic across the UK, an individual treatment plan should ideally be tailored for the customer to benefit from the results, prices range from £150-900. THE FACIAL THAT FAMOUS FACES LOVE! Skin health doesn’t need to be complicated, just like many well known celebrities, your time is valuable, that’s why many well known famous faces turn to effective treatments that take up very little time and give maximum results. The BEAUTY team reveals one particular celebrity facial that is blazing a trail of flawless fresh beauties across the UK and worldwide.

here is one treatment that celebrities just cannot get enough of lately. Already a firm favourite for famous faces across the pond including Paris Hilton and Brittany Snow, it’s becoming the must-have for Brit stars to get red carpet ready. The HydraFacial treatment, available at MediZen in Sutton Coldfield, combines six essential skin care steps into one simple facial, so you can ensure you’re not just improving the appearance of the skin, but truly restoring youthful, healthy skin. The beauty of the treatment, and what makes it such a starstudded favourite, is that you can see immediate results that don’t require any downtime. Fans in the UK include Karren Brady, Tanya Burr, Suki Waterhouse, Emma Bunton, Sophie Anderton, Pasha Kovalev, Abbey Clancy, Tina Hobley and Claire Sweeney (to name a few!). Plus, Miss
Abby Clancy
Birmingham (of Miss Great Britain) is known to drop in to MediZen from time to time to get her skin pageant-ready! The facial uses advanced, patented vortex technology to deliver botanical ingredients with the most desirable nutrients to the skin, such as hyaluronic acid, green tea extract and red algae extract. It is also packed full of the most powerful antioxidants which work to counteract the damage of free radicals – caused by
pollution, sun and stress – which can damage the skin and accelerate the ageing process. All these ingredients penetrate deeply into the skin during a six step process (lymphatic drainage, cleansing and exfoliation, brightening agent, extraction, hydration and LED lighting), leaving you with a healthy radiance that is enhanced with every treatment. In a recent interview with Karren Brady CBE, Baroness of Knightsbridge and award-winning business woman, who is the official face of the brand, to find out why it’s her beauty staple, here’s what she had to say… “Weeks of filming, long hours and heavy studio make-up left my skin congested, dull and lack lustre. I choose to have a HydraFacial as I like the idea of the 6 steps. I also appreciate all this still only takes under an hour’s treatment time. It’s always good to find such an effective

into a busy lifestyle. Immediately following a HydraFacial treatment my skin is buffed, cleansed and glowing. It’s very rare that you see a great result after just one treatment, but the difference after a HydraFacial is incredible. My pores are tightened, the skin hydrated and the fine lines around my eyes softened. The following day, if it’s possible, my skin is even better. It actually improves the quality of my skin and makes me feel like I don’t have to cover my face with make-up. I like to have a HydraFacial regularly to keep my skin healthy and glowing. Being constantly in the public eye means I always have to look my best, especially down the red carpet with cameras flashing
in my face. Having regular HydraFacials and using their own home care products in between treatments really gives me lots of confidence - because I know my skin looks great, without the overdone effects of some treatments. This is a straightforward treatment that improves the skin’s texture, softens fine lines and gives amazing hydration, leaving you feeling that glow you had in the bloom of youth.” The treatment is available at MediZen, the Midlands’ premier cosmetic injectables and laser hair removal clinic based in Sutton Coldfield. Established in 1999, it is one of the first of its kind doctor-led and non-surgical medical aesthetic clinics ever opened in Birmingham. Over the years, they’ve helped literally thousands of clients to feel more confident in their appearance. You’ll probably be recommended to have a HydraFacial treatment once a month - ask MediZen about the courses they offer - and to use the dedicated home care products in between. These serums contain the same ingredients used during the facial, so you can essentially extend the results until you can get yourself booked in again. The HydraFacial treatment is available at MediZen in Sutton Coldfield. As a special offer for Beauty readers, we’re offering 50% off when you quote code ´MIDSBEAUTY´ before the end of December 2016. LOOKING FOR SAFE COSMETIC TREATMENTS?
Read our no-nonsense guide to finding a quality reputable professional FINDING THE RIGHT PROFESSIONAL FOR YOU.. “Don’t be confused by the jargon!” says Aesthetic Nurse, Cheryl Barton (pictured left), “when it comes to finding a ’safe’ medical practitioner in aesthetics and cosmetic interventions, look beyond the initials, titles and memberships”

Neither of these registers list any Non-Health therapists or Beauty Therapists. Mandatory Registers When it comes to checking any register, all Doctors, Dentists and Registered Nurses are licensed to practice in the UK by their mandatory and statutory regulators, this means it is written in statue, which means it is the law. They MUST be on that register to work and practice legally in the UK. If they are not listed on those Mandatory Registers you really do want to know why. It is often those who are not on the mandatory registers that hit the newspaper headlines as the bogus nurses or doctors. MY ADVICE IS ALWAYS: Check the mandatory registers first and foremost. This can be done on line, its quick and simple: l Check a Doctors registration http://www.gmc-uk.org/doctors/ register/LRMP.asp l Check a Registered Nurse registration https://www.nmc.org.uk/ registration/search-the-register/ l

3. DO NOT BE FOOLED INTO THINKING “ACCREDITATION” MEANS ONE DOCTOR OR NURSE IS SAFER THAN ANOTHER There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that Doctor, Nurse or Dentist A is anymore safer than Doctor, Nurse or Dentist B by being listed on a voluntary register. A voluntary register can bring a certain element of Quality Assurance to patient-consumers. We can view these registers rather like administrative kite marks, meaning that certain policies are in place. But please be in no doubt,
there is absolutely no guarantee of a ‘safe’ treatment or cosmetic perfection and to market these treatments and practitioners as ‘safe and accredited’ is in my view misleading, as they all come with risks, there are side effects and there can be complications.
a specialist surgeon. If Doctor is not listed on that GMC specialist register, should they really be claiming to be ‘specialists’ at all? And finally if they are not listed there, then you really do need to ask why.
4. ALWAYS CHECK THOSE MANDATORY REGISTERS FIRST.

Don’t be taken in by the jargon, the badges and the certificates on the wall, check the registers that matter, the mandatory ones. The Mandatory GMC register also lists Doctors who have specialised in a certain area of medicine or surgery. For instance there are many who claim to be Dermatologists and Skin Experts. A Dermatologist is an expert medical skin specialist and will be listed on that mandatory GMC Specialist Register. Likewise many may call themselves Plastic, Cosmetic and Aesthetic Surgeons or ENT, Head and Neck or Facial Surgeons, they may have done some training within the NHS in these fields of surgery, but if they did not complete their training they will not be listed as

What is breast augmentation? Breast augmentation, also known as breast enlargement or a boob job, is enhancement of the breast and this is usually done using implants, although more recently another technique where fat is transferred from other areas of the body has been used to enhance the breasts. However, this technique is not well established at the moment due to the modest results and relatively high cost.
Preparing for breast augmentation Breast augmentation can dramatically affect quality of life and improve self-esteem. However, it is important to consider the emotional impact of any surgery that will change your body shape, it is important that you are well prepared, both mentally and physically for the changes that you will go through. We have psychological and emotional support for all of our patients here at the Staiano Clinic and you will need the backup of your friends and family to help you through, it is important that they support your decision. You will also need support and guidance from your surgeon and clinic team and you should make sure that you are comfortable with the level of care and the expertise that you will receive from them. If you are going through an emotionally challenging time in your life such as a change in your job or relationship, then this may not be a good time to undergo breast augmentation and it may
be better to wait until things are more stable to allow you to cope better emotionally with the surgery. When operating on the breast it is always best to wait until the size and shape of breasts have settled and there are no significant fluctuations planned for the future in order to give you a more predictable result. This means that your breasts should have stopped growing and so ideally you should be at least 18 years old (it is important to consider whether breast implants are right for you if you are young as they are a long term commitment). Also if your weight is not stable then it is better to wait until it is before having breast implants because changes in your weight can have an unpredictable effect on the size and shape of your breasts. If you are considering having children in the future, then this can also have an unpredictable effect on your breasts and so ideally you should wait until you have finished your family before having breast augmentation. However, if you feel that this will be a long way in the future there is no problem with having a breast augmentation and then going on to have children afterwards, it will not affect your ability to breastfeed. If you have recently had a child, then it is best to wait to allow the size and shape of your breasts to settle before considering breast surgery. This should ideally be six months and preferably a year, this will also give your child a chance to grow up and perhaps be easier to manage when they are slightly older and able to walk. If you are a smoker then you
should give up as this can affect your ability to heal adequately, particularly in the first two weeks after surgery.
Types of implants Most people talk about implants in terms of their volume such as 250cc or 350cc but there is a great range of implants available and the volume is only one aspect. They can be categorised according to their shape, the contents of the implant or the coating of the shell.
46 B E A U T Y Everything you needed to know about breast surgery.indd 4
24/08/2016 15:33
Nip & Tuck
The shape of the implant can be round or teardrop and each implant comes in a variety of profiles which means how far they stick out. This can be low, moderate, high or extra high. Each will give a different look and it is important to go through this with your surgeon as a low profile teardrop 250cc implant will look completely different to an extra high profile round 250cc implant therefore it is not enough to go on volume alone. The contents of the implants can be either saline or silicone. In this country we mainly use silicone filled implants as they give a more natural and longlasting result. Saline implants were used exclusively in the USA for some time while silicone implants were banned in that country. However, they are now back in use as there is no evidence to suggest they cause any systemic illnesses. Saline implants are more prone to rippling and deflation so not widely used. All implants have a silicone shell (even ones filled with saline) and this shell can be smooth, textured or polyurethane foam coated. Smooth silicone implants are not widely used in the UK in favour of the textured variety, which is said to form less capsular contracture, which is hardening of the implant over time. Polyurethane foam coated implants have an even lower risk of hardening over time but are controversial and so not all surgeons use them. However, if you are considering breast implants then it is worth doing your research and looking into all the available options.
Incision placements INFRAMAMMARY INCISION The most common placement for the incision in the UK is in the inframammary crease, which is the fold where the bra sits. The incision is usually 5cm long and can be slightly red and obvious to start off with but tends to fade well over time. This is the incision that I most often use. It gives good access to the breast pocket and once faded can be difficult to see. INFRA-AREOLAR INCISION This incision is a U-shape at the lower border of the areola of the nipple and again when faded can be difficult to see. However, if it does not leave a nice scar then it is in a more obvious position than the inframammary incision. There is a greater risk of alteration in the nipple sensation when using this incision. TRANSAXILLARY INCISION This is an incision in the armpit, which is well hidden and leaves no scarring on the breast. However, access can be limited and it is difficult to create a breast

pocket, particularly round the cleavage area and is not widely used in this country. However, there are surgeons who have expertise in the use of this incision and my advice to the patient is to find a surgeon that you trust who has good results and to allow them to do the incision that they are most comfortable with. If you have a strong view that you would like a particular incision, then you should find a surgeon who performs this regularly.
Who it is for? There are three groups of patients who most commonly seek breast augmentation. The first is the patient who has always had small breasts. They are out of proportion with their body and they are seeking surgery to feel more womanly and in proportion. The second group of patients are patients who have lost volume and/or shape in their breasts, usually due to having children or losing weight. This group of patients want their breasts to be restored to how they used to be, perhaps with a little bit of extra enhancement. The final group of patients are patients with a breast asymmetry with one breast naturally larger than the other who would like to regain symmetry and be able to wear bras that fit.
Who is it not for? Breast augmentation is not recommended if you are overweight. You will have an increased risk of complications and particularly if you are planning to lose weight then you should wait until your weight
is stable in order to get a more predictable and long-lasting result. If you are a smoker, then you are strongly advised to give up as this can cause a delay in wound healing and increase your risk of problems. Any surgery to change the shape of your body can have a profound effect on your mental health and wellbeing, it can be an emotional journey as you come to terms with the changes. It is important to have good support structures in place, and if you are going through any sort of emotional challenges, such as a change in your relationship or your work, or you do not have the full support of your friends and family, then it may be an opportunity to reflect on whether this is the right time for you. If you do not want larger breasts and it is mainly the shape of your breasts that you are unhappy with, then perhaps a breast lift may be right for you rather than breast implants.
What to expect? Breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic with sedation. The procedure itself lasts between an hour and an hour and a half. You are usually asked to attend the hospital at least an hour before the procedure starts. You will need to have nothing to eat or drink in the hours before your surgery (full details should be given by the hospital). You will meet with your surgeon and your anaesthetist prior to your surgery. Your surgeon will usually draw markings on your body while you are awake and sitting up before
the operation because the shape of your breasts will change when you are lying on your back on the operating table. The surgeon may also take preoperative photographs. There will be an opportunity to ask any questions and to go over things to ensure that you are completely happy with the plan although you should avoid asking major question like: “Can I have a different size of implant?’, these questions are best dealt with in the days and weeks before the surgery rather than on the day! You will normally wake up from your operation in the operating theatre, although patients do not usually remember this. You will be brought to the recovery area, which is a ward within the theatre complex where you will first become aware of your surroundings although things can be a little groggy to start with. When you are comfortable you will be transferred back to the ward so it is important to tell your friends and relatives that you may be off the ward for an hour and a half to two hours but this does not mean that the operation has taken all this time. Most surgeons do not use extensive dressings or bandages and you will usually come back from theatre wearing a good supportive bra, which will act as the main dressing. There will probably be a small dressing over your incisions. You may or may not have drains, which are tubes, connected to bottles to collect any blood. Within a few hours of your surgery you will be up and about and able to eat and drink and go to the

24/08/2016 15:34

toilet. You would usually be well enough to go home at this stage although sometimes patients stay overnight in hospital and go home in the morning.
Healing and recovery You will usually see me in clinic about a week after your surgery when the dressings will be removed. You normally do not need any further dressings after this. You will need to check with your surgeon whether you can wash with the dressings on but once the dressings have been removed you should be able to wash and shower normally. For the first week things will feel uncomfortable and stretched and you can get unusual sensations such as tingling or hypersensitivity in your breasts, which usually settles. Occasionally there is trapped air in the breast pocket and this can give a squelchy sensation, which you can sometimes hear too, but do not be alarmed, as this will settle. You will not feel like doing a great deal in the first week after surgery but will be able to potter around the house and perform light chores. In the second week after surgery you will start to feel better and may be able to work from home although I normally advise two weeks before driving (check with your car insurance company in case they have any set rules). Most patients are able to go back to work after two weeks if they perform light duties or office work. You will be able to go back to the gym to perform gentle exercises after two weeks but I normally advise patients just to focus on the
lower body such as the exercise bike and the stepper (although avoid strenuous activity with your arms). If you need to do strenuous upper body activity either at the gym or at work, I advise that you wait four to six weeks before starting this and then you should ease in gently as if it is uncomfortable or things swell then you may need longer. Your scar may be red and obvious to start off with and after about a month I advise patients to start massaging with cream to help it to soften and fade. It can take several months to fully fade but when it does it can be hard to see.
How to find a surgeon? This is a very important topic and one I could write a book about. In fact, I am writing a book about it, which is due to be published this year. Personal recommendation is always a good place to start. If you know someone who has had a good experience and who can recommend a surgeon,
particularly in terms of how they were looked after, after the surgery then this is a great help. The internet is a wonderful place and there is a lot of information out there. All doctors should have their training and qualifications available for you to search. You can usually identify a plastic surgeon by the letters FRCS(plast) after their name and whilst your surgeon does not have to be a plastic surgeon in order to perform this surgery it is the mark of someone who has been through a formal and rigorous training scheme. The Plastic Surgery Associations BAAPS and BAPRAS all publish a list of their members on the Internet including their special interests. All plastic surgeons will perform breast implant surgery but if you have a complex problem, particularly in terms of an asymmetry, or problems with the shape of your breasts, then you should look for a plastic surgeon that specialises in breast surgery. It is perfectly reasonable to see more than one surgeon because you must feel comfortable with the surgeon and the team, there is no substitute for a face-to-face consultation with the person who will be performing your surgery. Do not be afraid to come with a list of questions and to ask about their training and experience as any surgeon who is not comfortable talking about this is probably one to avoid.
Trends in breast shape and size If you look over the years, the trend in breast implant surgery has moved towards slightly bigger implants and the average size that we are using today is larger than it used to be. Having said that, patients still want a natural result. There are only a small minority of patients who want to look fake despite
the public perception of this procedure. In my experience the interpretation of a natural result can vary between individuals and it is helpful to bring in photographs of your desired look. A truly natural result has a gentle slope to the upper part of the breast with a more rounded shape below the nipple. However, some patients do want some fullness in the upper part of the breast and this is something that I call the “supernatural look. Whilst not desiring a fake look which has got a lot of fullness in the upper pole and a very rounded appearance, many patients want to feel fuller while keeping an attractive contour that is in keeping with the proportion of their frame.
Push up bras versus implants I show before and after photos
of my cases to all of my patients, which demonstrate the differences that the different shapes of implants can achieve, as well as the differences that the same implant can achieve in patients with different breast shapes preoperatively. It is important to stress that when looking at before and after photographs these are taken of patients who were not wearing a bra and when you have had surgery it is perfectly reasonable to wear a push up bra to give a fuller look if this is something that you want, for instance if you are going out or for a special occasion. However, there are some implants, which give this sort of look even when you are not wearing a bra. It appeals to some patients but not others. There are photographs in the media with people who have their breasts sitting very high up
50 B E A U T Y Everything you needed to know about breast surgery.indd 8
24/08/2016 15:35

on their chest. This is all done by the push up bra because it would be unnatural to have the breast in this position when they are out of a bra. It is important to consider what you will look like every day, you will still be able to wear clothes and bras to enhance your breasts after you have had surgery but you need to be comfortable with your body out of clothes.
Factors that cause breasts to look unnatural Patients spend a lot of time deciding what size implant they should have. I explain that as long as the implant is within the base width of their chest then the difference of one size bigger or one size smaller will not make a significant effect on their final result. For me the width of the implant is key to getting a good result because if the implant is too wide then you may be able to see or feel the edges of it and this can give an unnatural result. The other problem is putting an implant in that is too wide is that there can be too much fullness laterally, so-called side boob or a web between the breasts in the middle, so-called symmastia, both of which give an unnatural result. The really crucial thing when putting in breast implants that is actually more important than what size of implant you have is the position of the implant. That is why it is so important to choose your surgeon because the pocket that the implant is placed in is crucial. It needs to be centred on the nipple and the cleavage needs to be enhanced. If the implant is put in
too high or too low or too far to one side or the other, then this will give an unnatural result regardless of what the implant choice was.
Why breast implants may not give you the natural look you would like When choosing an implant, I use a sizing kit in the clinic to give an idea of the volume of implant that you may like, sometimes patients come with ideas about the volume that they would like based on a friend’s experience or photographs they may have seen on the internet. They look at the different shapes and profiles of implants and try to choose a suitable implant based on the diameter of their breast. Occasionally there is a situation where the patient wants a natural look without too much fullness and are perhaps considering a teardrop implant but the size that they would like is quite large for their frame. It may be that the friend they were talking to or the photograph they saw on the Internet is of a patient with a wider frame, which can accommodate that size using a natural teardrop implant. If for instance a patient decides that they want an implant of around 300cc because their friend has this and has got a very nice natural result it may be that their friend has a wide chest and so may have a natural low profile or teardrop implant of 300cc which fits them nicely. However, if your chest is narrower than your friend’s, then a 300cc implant on you may need to be fuller and more rounded in
order to fit your frame. This will give you a different look. This is why you cannot go on volume alone. I appreciate that this can be a difficult concept to grasp. This is why I always encourage patients to come for at least a second consultation to go over things. You need to develop a rapport with your surgeon, explain what you are trying to achieve, not only in terms of volume but also in terms of the look that you desire. I would encourage all patients to talk to their friends and family and to look on the Internet to get ideas and help with the implant choice, as it is an important decision and one that you must be happy with. However, it is also important to make sure that you are able to get your hopes and concerns across to your surgery and can listen to your surgeon’s advice so that between you, you can get the best result for you. Do not be daunted, it can be an amazing life changing experience but at the same time go in with your eyes open and listen to the advice you are given. Give yourself enough time and space to be able to reflect and make an informed decision that you are completely happy with. What is CoolSculpting®? CoolSculpting® by Zeltiq, is an innovative, nonsurgical and natural way to contour your body shape. Using Cryolipolysis technology, the procedure cools fat cells to a certain temperature, which are then destroyed and naturally eliminated through the body’s lymphatic system, permanently. As long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle, the results are long lasting. A single one-hour treatment is clinically proven to reduce a fat deposit by 20-40%. CoolSculpting® is the only FDA cleared Cryolipolysis treatment available in the UK. This treatment provides truly remarkable results. What areas can it help? And is it safe? CoolSculpting® is ideal for stubborn, diet resistant bulges of fat. Typical treatment areas are: tummy, love handles, inner and outer thighs, bingo wings, under chin, and back fat. With over two and a half million CoolSculpting® procedures carried out worldwide so far, and 95% patient satisfaction recorded, it is proven to be a safe and effective treatment for non-surgical fat reduction.
What does it not do? Unlike gastric bypass surgery, CoolSculpting® is not a weight loss solution for people who are obese. It is, however a non-surgical alternative to liposuction. CoolSculpting® should not replace a healthy balanced diet and exercise. I always advocate a healthy lifestyle, before any other solution.
the importance of taking good care of yourself, with plenty of water, exercise and sleep.
Who is the ideal candidate? Good candidates have noticeable bulges in certain areas they would like to get rid of. The CoolSculpting® fat reduction procedure is specifically designed for those who have unwanted stubborn fat that resists diet and exercise. Even slim people who exercise regularly can struggle to lose stubborn pockets of fat that are diet and exercise resistant.
Does it hurt? As the cooling begins during the first few minutes, you will feel pressure and intense cold. This soon dissipates. Many people read, watch videos, work on their laptop, or even take a nap during their treatment.
Where does the frozen fat go? and are the results permanent? Once the treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), they die and are naturally processed and eliminated from the body. Once the treated fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good. Do we need to prepare for CoolSculpting®? No supplements or pills are required and you do not have to adopt a new diet and exercise habits, but again I can’t stress
How long does it take? Each area of treatment takes approximately 60 minutes. As CoolSculpting® is non-surgical there is no downtime so typically you can return to normal activities immediately. Some patients experience redness, minor bruising, tingling, numbness or discomfort in the treated area, but this is temporary and will resolve completely. Often times, patients return to work after their CoolSculpting® session is over.
Are there any possible risks and complications? During the procedure you may experience deep pulling, tugging, pinching, numbness or discomfort. Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging and pain. Rare side effects may also occur. The CoolSculpting® procedure is not for everyone. You should not have the CoolSculpting® procedure if you suffer from cryoglobulinemia or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria. The CoolSculpting® procedure is not a treatment for obesity. As with any medical procedure,

always ask your physician if the CoolSculpting® procedure is right for you, and please make sure you have a thorough consultation before embarking on any treatment. Who should carry out a treatment? The industry still remains largely unregulated. This emphasises how important it is for anyone considering treatment to thoroughly research not only the procedure, but also the experience and qualifications of the practitioner. Procedures cleared by the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) are clinically tested and CoolSculpting® should be performed by a medical professional. A minimum of two weeks prior to treatment the medical professional should conduct a medical consultation with you in addition to explaining in depth CoolSculpting® and the results you can expect.
tailored to your specific goals. The length of your CoolSculpting® session will vary depending on the number of areas being treated during one visit. You and your provider may schedule additional sessions in order to meet your goals. When will I see results? You may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after your treatment, and will experience the most dramatic results after two months*. But your body will still flush out affected fat cells and continues doing so for up to four to six months after treatment. *Results may vary Have you had CoolSculpting®? Yes, and I absolutely love it!
How much does it cost? The price for CoolSculpting® procedures varies depending on your areas of concern, the number of sessions needed, and your ultimate goals. Be wary of cheaply priced treatments that are not FDA approved, possibly unsafe, costing you a great deal of money with no improvements at all. How many treatments does a person need? Your CoolSculpting® provider, will help you create an individualized treatment plan

ost celebrities are flawless and quite often this comes with a trip under the knife. Sometimes you may notice a change in a star´s entire look and wonder if something has changed – in most cases, this is a big yes. However, not anymore, with advances in technology, science and aesthetic medicine, more and more celebrities worldwide are snubbing the scalpel and opting for non surgical image enhancing options.
One of those non surgical procedures that is currently is helping thousands of people straighten out their bumpy noses – is known as the 15 minute nose job pioneered by Wolverhampton based celebrity cosmetic specialist Mr Ash Labib. The renowned Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon, is the founder of AL Aesthetics, and currently hailed as the number one Nose Job guru in the UK. The pioneering treatment involves injecting hyaluronic acid dermal filler into the nose to make a smoother line from base
to tip, the clever techniques used by Labib make the nose more balanced in appearance and can actually make the nose appear smaller. “A nose with a good shape is likely going to boost the aesthetic harmony of the face better than any other facial feature” say Mr Ash Labib, “A balanced and well proportioned nose can improve a person’s look dramatically. For most celebrities, their lives are dependent on how they look, which is why they often aren’t hesitant to the idea of a few

tweaks, but they have incredibly busy schedules, most people today are constantly time pushed and busy, even if they’re not famous, so the last thing anybody needs is downtime to recover from extensive surgery and bruising which traditional invasive surgery can give” In addition to this, you’re likely to see yourself more often than anybody else from the past decades thanks to Snapchat, Skype, Facebook and other picture and video apps. In a recent survey, one in three plastic surgeons stated that social media has contributed massively to the rise in demand for that perfect nose. Common complaints about the nose imperfections include: • Size of the nose • Correction following an injury • Bump on the nose • The tip of the nose not being straight • The bridge of the nose is too wide or too thin • Nostril size With over 24 years of experience notched up in the art of surgical rhinoplasty, Mr Ash Labib has spent the last 8 years dedicated to refining the ultimate nonsurgical nose job as a world class cosmetic specialist. His patients always leave ecstatic over the fact that they can obtain red carpet results without having to undergo invasive surgery – all within such a short period. The most requested noses at AL Aesthetics include Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone, but when probed to reveal his celebrity

clients, Mr Ash Labib is hesitant and coy, “Now that would be telling” he laughs with an alluring charisma. Mr Ash Labib has a three month waiting list in his West Midlands Clinic, with some celebrities making the well invested effort to see him from London, Paris, and as afar as Egypt, and America. Intrigued by the reviews of his work, we thought of having a look ourselves to see what the buzz was all about.
1. Consultation, Consent Forms, and Photographs Mr Ash Labib first carries out a physical evaluation and a comprehensive consultation to talk about individual concerns. After a cooling off period, patients return to start the treatment, once booked in, there is another brief consultation where medical and consent forms are documented, and some photographs of the nose are captured so there is a comparative image.

Ideal candidates for a nonsurgical nose job include those with minor cosmetic flaws such as bumps, flat nose and crooked bridges. 2. Prepping The skin is cleaned and prepped for the procedure. This is followed by a topical numbing cream or a local anesthesia, depending on the specialist. 3. Injections A sterile syringe is used prepackaged with a safe and reputable dermal filler to inject the contents under the nasal skin, Mr Ash Labib uses Allergan products for which he is also a global ambassador. Injections typically take around 10 to 20 minutes and in Mr Ash Labib’s case, it will be only 15 minutes. You’ll most probably need 2 to 4 injections only, it depends on the individual needs.

4. Gentle massage Mr Ash Labib will then gently massage your nose, manipulating the dermal filler and moulding it skillfully giving you your desired shape. As soon as this is over, you’ll can sit up, look at the mirror and maybe take a selfie. Overall, this procedure is a must try for those with nose-related concerns. The procedure is fast and safe and costs much less than surgical rhinoplasty. In addition, the fillers can be dissolved if you do not like the results. The procedure causes little to no pain and is a fuss-free approach to improving your look within minutes. 5. Post treatment Photograph, After Care Advice and Booking in for Follow Up Appointment

THE RISE OF THE METROSEXUAL
G
one are the days when men shunned away from a dermal filler or a laser hair removal treatment, research indicates that men are catching up in the spending stakes, when it comes to image enhancement and skincare. Plastic surgeon Riccardo Frati says that “Men are becoming progressively more aware of the advantages of cosmetic surgery and aesthetic treatments, a
youthful appearance and looking fit can be important in business and society.” Whilst the cosmetic process can sometimes be similar between the genders, the motivations behind them are different, Mr. Frati observes that when it comes to cosmetic surgery, men are motivated by more concrete tangible things such as wanting to be more powerful, in control, attractive, and make more money.
The desire to keep the edge in the business world and personal relationships are the key factors boosting the increase in the male sector of cosmetic surgery and aesthetic treatments. Dr. Marco, an Aesthetic Doctor at E.F Medispa, says, “Men are expected to be eternally youthful in terms of stamina and dynamism, they are being judged more on their looks, so men are realizing the importance of keeping themselves fresh faced”.

THE RISE OF NON-SURGICAL TREATMENTS FOR MEN While the jump in demand isn’t unique to the gender, doctors say it speaks to many men’s desire to boost their looks often through quick treatments that don’t cause a lot of bruising or require lengthy recovery times. Cosmetic Doctor Philippe Pisal-Hamida says “Non invasive cosmetic treatments are inexpensive, instant, and often painless with durable effects; male patients see this as an investment in their aesthetic appearance and personal wellbeing skin.”
TOP OF THE LIST IS BOTOX The most popular treatment amongst men seeking a little age perfection is Botox. Clinics such as the Transform Medical Group have seen 50% more men have Botox injections this year alone, compared with the same period in 2007. Richard Fairclough, 46 from Sutton Coldfield says, “Botox is brilliant, discreet and instantly
refreshes me, and I have it done three times a year, as well a professional Obagi skin peel, people always comment on how fresh-faced I look!”
TOP NON-SURGICAL TREATMENTS FOR MEN • Wrinkle-busters such as Botox, Restylane • Professional Skin Care “Cosmeceuticals” • Teeth Whitening/Cosmetic Dentistry • Hair Restoration Treatments • Laser Hair removal • Micro-Dermabrasion • Tattoo removal * Botox and Fillers * Power facials * Laser Hair Removal * Sweating treatments
TOP SURGERY FOR MEN Men are exercising, quitting smoking and eating healthy foods. However, men who end up in consulting a plastic surgeon or cosmetic doctor often say they don’t think they look as good as they feel.
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon Professor Jim Frame says that “Dysmorphia amongst men is common, certainly amongst my patients, some patients are fresh off a divorce or looking for a competitive edge in an office full of young guys, others are inspired by wives who have had successful procedures”.
TOP SURGICAL PROCEDURES FOR MEN • Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) • Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty) • Liposuction and Vaserlipo • Male Breast Reduction • Pectoral Implants • Hair Transplantation • Face Lift and Neck Lift • Ear Correction Many men do not know what cosmetic options exist because they are simply not exposed to the same media women are. They are often surprised that many of today’s solutions are simple and very accessible.
“The rise in male grooming has extended to the increase in demand for improvements in skin appearance, lines and wrinkles and overall skin quality. No longer just for the female population, men are beginning to see that aesthetic treatments can give rise to subtle, but extremely revitalising and refreshing effects to their facial appearance, without the need for invasive surgery or extended downtime.” Dr Bob Khanna, cosmetic dentist and aesthetic practitioner

osmetic Doctor Dan Dhunna took time out of his busy clinics between London and Birmingham to give BEAUTY readers an express guide to understanding the difference between BotoxÂŽ injections and dermal cosmetic filler treatments. BotoxÂŽ is a Brand name for a muscle relaxing prescription medicine derived from the botulism germ. Initially it was used to treat uncontrolled eye squints but it found its most
well known use when it was discovered to relax the crows’ feet of patients of Canadian ophthalmologist Dr Jean Carruthers. Lucky for her, her husband was a dermatologist and a new anti-ageing phenomenon was born! It has now been around for over 25 years and has over 20 registered uses worldwide including treatment of spasms of limbs, migraine and overactive bladders. Dermal fillers were initially made of collagen. This all changed with the advent
of hyaluronic acid in the 1990s, yielding brands such as Restylane and Juvederm. Hyaluronic acid is a sugarbased molecule that is present in our skin, eyes and joints. It is produced synthetically and packaged into syringes of different thicknesses. Lasting anything from 6 to 18 months, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are reversible gels that are injected into and under the skin for improving fine lines and wrinkles as well as lip enhancements and facial volume replacement.

Very common in men and older women, horizontal forehead lines can be softened with Botox® injections. It’s better to have just small amounts as too much can risk a heavy brow and a frozen shiny forehead.
FOREHEAD
Overactive eyebrow muscles often create angry ”number 11” lines which can be relaxed with Botox®. Results can last four months, but only go to an experienced medical practitioner such as a cosmetic doctor as side effects include droopy eyelids and a Mr. Spock eyebrow!
FROWN LINES (GLABELLA)
CROWS FEET Usually the first lines to appear in your early 30s these can be successfully improved with Botox® injections. Results may not last the characteristic 3 to 4 months typical for most Botox® treatments as you are only targeting the over active part of the eye muscle. Overtreatment can cause compensation lines to develop under the eyes.
NASOLABIAL FOLDS Formed as a result of laxity of the cheek skin this common area can be treated with the injection of a dermal filler such as Juvederm. Results can last for up to 12 months but be careful as too much here can lead to a lumpy overdone look.
MARIONETTE LINES The plague of most women this can give a downturned mouth effect. Careful placement of dermal filler in a triangular arrangement can lift the corner of the mouth and sharpen the smile. Side effects can include some bruising.

Cosmetic Surgery - How to Stay Safe
With an industry, which in part, is heavily unregulated and believed to be worth nearly £4 billion, Mandy Luckman, head of Irwin Mitchell’s cosmetic surgery team, has seen an 80% increase in enquiries from people who believe they have suffered negligent cosmetic procedures. Irwin Mitchell conducted a survey of attitudes to cosmetic surgery with 2,000 UK adults and found: • • • • • •
4 in 10 under-25s are already considering cosmetic surgery 1 in 3 Brits would consider cosmetic surgery to improve their appearance 40% have had a cosmetic procedure, or are seriously considering it Most popular cosmetic procedures include breast enlargements, nose jobs, cosmetic dentistry, breast uplifts and liposuction 52% of people wish they had done more research into their procedure and surgeon 43% said they regret having the surgery altogether
Top 10 Tips when considering cosmetic surgery
✓
1
Research the procedure so you know what is involved and whether it is right for you
✓
2
Research the clinic and practitioner to ensure that they are qualified and meet the practitioner who is going to perform your procedure beforehand
✓
3
Ensure the practitioner and the clinic has adequate insurance to perform the procedure and request details of those insurers
✓
4
Check if your practitioner resides in the UK and that they will be available to deal with any post-operative complications
✓
5
Do not be tempted to select your practitioner because they are cheap - your health is worth more than that
6
Ask about risks and complications
7
Ask about downtime after the procedure
8
Consult your GP to get a second opinion
9
Have realistic expectations about what the procedure can achieve
✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓
10 Complain if you are dissatisfied with the result - a good practitioner will do their best to put things right
BeautyTracker Raising standards across the beauty industry Irwin Mitchell has developed a mobile app, in collaboration with the Safety in Beauty campaign, called BeautyTracker. The app is a great way for cosmetic surgery patients to keep a log of beauty treatments, review procedures and get expert advice if a cosmetic treatment goes wrong. Mandy Luckman says, “We want to see stricter regulations that will not only provide improved support for people whose lives have been turned upside down by complications during cosmetic procedures. Government intervention and a fundamental shift in regulation is needed in this industry. Patients need clear and accessible information about what to look for when finding a practitioner, so they can make an informed choice about the treatment they receive.”

nce in a lifetime, a skincare product comes along that completely changes the way we think and feel about the regimes we use to fight every sign of ageing. Sure, there are thousands of brands that claim that their product is packed with every ingredient that you need to maintain your youthful looks and smooth complexion; but it’s a rare thing when one product can live up to it’s claims that it’s a one size fits all, multi level skin treatment for all skin types and multiple concerns, with the clinical data to back it up and a cascade of reviews by high profile journalists, editors and beauty

buyers who wholeheartedly and universally agree. Cult 51 is rapidly taking the skin care industry by storm. First and foremost a skincare brand, Cult 51 uses the ethos that less is more when it comes to multiple lotions and creams and very much believes that powerful ingredients in a skeleton selection of products are key. Therefor the “range” consists of two products (halleluiah! a tidy dressing table), a serum and their hyper-potent night cream. They say it is a night cream but it also has protective and hydrating qualities for during the day, therefore it really is a highly effective all-rounder if you have dryer skin that needs extra, daily care.
Cult 51 promises not only to reduce the signs of ageing and to smooth, hydrate and repair ageing skin, day and night, but it also makes the promise to reduce hyperpigmentation which can be brought on by excessive exposure to the sun and following events which change hormonal balance, such as pregnancy and to increase cell and collagen renewal. The night cream and serum boasts an impressive array of natural botanicals, vitamins (pretty much every B vitamin imaginable), precious oils and elixirs to work in harmony with each other, tackling a multitude of sins. The beauty of this very small but unique range is that your mind isn’t boggled with which creams to use each
morning and night and in which order. It really is as simple as using the serum for day and the night cream for night! Perfect for those of us with hectic schedules and little time to fathom which cream goes on when! The star of the show is the Cult 51 night cream, it can boast 51 benefits including reducing wrinkles and lines, generating younger skin cells, slowing the ageing process and reducing the appearance of age spots as well as increasing collagen production, In clinical trials Cult 51 was seen to reduce wrinkles by up to 52% in 28 days and to increase levels of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is needed by cells to generate energy by up to 65%. it’s selling points are,

frankly, endless. In not looking to supply a multiple range of one off products for one off concerns, Cult 51 have used their scientific knowledge and put their energies into creating this one, super powerful and multi tasking, deliciously luxurious cream. As aforementioned, it isn’t just for the night time, however, our skin repairs itself best during the sleeping hours and this highly effective product will give your skin all that it needs in order to regenerate and revitalise whilst you sleep. Used alone or with the Immediate Effect Serum during the day, the Cult 51 night cream can give your skin the world of difference without your skincare regime being a military operation. For daytime, the Immediate
Effect serum works in conjunction with your own cells, stimulating collagen, elastin and cellular regeneration. It boasts to deliver visible results in as little as 15 minutes, for those days when your skin could really do with an instant boost (such as the party season) and all backed up with a clinical trial which can’t be argued!
Wrinkle depth, size and number are significantly reduced, expression lines and creases are softened, skin tone and texture is improved and the skin is brightened, nourished and just feels better feels hydrated. The cumulative build properties of this product also means that the results just get greater with each use.
NEED MORE PROOF? CULT 51 HAS BEEN REVIEWED BY SOME OF THE UK´S BIGGEST PLAYERS IN THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY AND WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY COMMANDS SOME SERIOUS ATTENTION: Athryn Catanzaro, Beauty Buyer, Fortnum & Mason “As a beauty buyer for Fortnum & Mason I have tested many creams, Cult51 is in a league of its own. After a short period of time the skin tone is visibly improved” The Times “As for niche brands Cult51 night cream has become the single best selling beauty product in Fortnum & Mason’s 300 year history.” Georgia Gatsby “All I can tell you is that it’s is a far better night cream than any I’ve ever come across before.” Ladies Style & Beauty “You can honestly see an
improvement straight away and that improvement is reflected on how the skin is after applying the cream to the face.” Beauty Passionista “So it was with some cynicism that I slapped on the latest greatest thing in skincare on my face. A month down the line, and I’m obsessed.” Glamour Goddess “Cult51 helps to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, as a result, the complexion of the face becomes more even and radiant.”
Refinery29 “Cut to a month later, and I have ditched all of my night time products in favor of Cult 51. I know: I didn’t believe it either.” Telegraph.co.uk “Clinical trials show improvements in the depth of wrinkles, age spots and skin radiance, and judging by its sell-out success since launching earlier this year, it’s one to get your hands on, quick.”
With these giants of beauty and media salivating over this highly coveted, clinically backed, highly effective skincare duo, maybe the next question to ask ourselves is…”where can I buy it?”

SKIN PEELS THE LOW DOWN Chemical peels have a long history. Even Cleopatra, one of history’s most celebrated beauty queens, regularly bathed in sour milk (lactic acid) to keep her skin soft and supple. he medical profession has used chemical peels composed of different types of acid formulas over the last century to treat skin conditions like scars, serious acne and deeply wrinkled skin. These peels have a range of strengths depending on the changes needed. Some are formulated for deep penetration resulting in surface
wounding and can involve discomfort as well as downtime for healing and recovery. The most common chemical peels use alpha or beta hydroxy acids and are derived from fruit (apples, grapes) sugar cane, and willow bark. Chemical peels include: salicylic acid, retinoic acid, glutathione, kojic acid, phenol, vitamin c, and trichloracetic acid.
A skin peel is made up of a chemical solution applied to dermis reducing the pH to acidic level resulting in accelerated exfoliation, deposition of collagen and improving clinical and aesthetic appearance of skin. Every skin type could benefit from a peel because of the large range of formulas and graduated

peel strengths available, even sensitive skin types can receive benefit for this type of treatment. Before you have a skin peel, a consultation and skin analysis will help determine if you’re a good candidate for this type of treatment or if there are other options better suited for your goals. On average, five to six peels are performed two weeks apart. However, the final requirements will depend on your skin and your objectives, and your practitioners advice. Peels should be carried out by suitable qualified doctors, dentists and aestheticians,
who have an understanding of skin anatomy, chemical protocol and ability to manage complications. Depending on what a patient wants to achieve there’s a perfect peel to suit their needs and boost confidence and achieve wellbeing.

DO WRINKLES REALLY AGE YOUR FACE? The No-Knife Face Lift A natural part of the ageing process is gravity leaving facial skin slacker, jaw lines undefined and brows drooping. Collagen and elastin production which holds the skin taut and younger looking, shuts down gradually from our late twenties. Everything thing we can do to kick-start production is a must. We resort to lotions and potions which promise anti-ageing remedies without appreciating they can’t wake up collagen and elastin, therefore it’s not uncommon to feel disheartened when our appearance doesn’t change because skincare products do not work the way we want them to, But there are solutions, revolutionary advances in skin rejuvenation provide a clinically proven treatment to combat ageing skin.
What is Ultherapy? Ultherapy is the key treatment recommended to achieve tight and lifted facial and body skin. Using targeted ultrasound energy, it initiates the body’s
natural response, known as neocollagenesis, to produce fresh, new collagen and elastic. A one off treatment is clinically proven to lift the treated area gradually. Initial results appear at 3 months with full results at 9 months. Ultherapy is the only FDA cleared skin lifting treatment available in the world with 21+ clinical papers supporting its efficacy and over 620,000 treatments worldwide. This treatment provides amazing results.
What areas can it help? Ultherapy is ideal for ageing skin which has become slack. Typical treatment areas are brows, cheek area, jaw line, neck, and décolletage. It can also be used on the arms and over the knees.
What can it not do? Ultherapy is not a permanent solution to ageing. It is a highly effective treatment to lift the skin. Results can last up to two years. It is, however the only non-surgical treatment cleared by the FDA as a viable alternative to a face, brow, or lower face lift.
Who is the ideal candidate? A good Ultherapy candidate has mild to moderate skin laxity where the skin begins to feel and look less firm. Examples include a lowered eyebrow line, loose skin on the neck, sagging under the chin, and lines or wrinkles on the chest. The best way to find out if you’re an Ultherapy candidate is to consult with a designated Ultherapy clinic or practitioner.
What does the treatment involve? The treatment involves deposits of focused ultrasound energy deep beneath the skin at the optimal temperature for collagen regeneration. The ultrasound has unique properties that allow it to bypass the surface of the skin

Skincare
to treat depths not matched by any other non-invasive cosmetic device. Ultherapy doesn’t involve any creams, fillers or toxins; it just relies on your body’s own collagen-building process for natural, noticeable results.
Do we need to prepare for Ultherapy? No preparation is required. If you are feeling anxious your practitioner will provide you with some light pain relief such as paracetemol.
How long does it take? Treatment for the lower face for e.g. will take approximately 60 minutes. A full face lift can take between 1 and half to two hours. Often the treatment is broken down into two sessions to suit the clients diary. With Ultherapy, there is no downtime (recovery time). After treatment, you can resume your normal activities immediately without having to follow any special post-treatment measures.
Does it hurt? As the ultrasound energy is delivered, you will feel tiny amounts of energy being deposited to precise depths, indicating that the collagenbuilding process has been initiated. Comfort levels vary from person to person, but the sensation only lasts while the ultrasound energy is being delivered.
Are there any possible risks and complications? The skin might appear flushed at first, but the redness should
disappear within a few hours. Some clients experience slight swelling, tingling or tenderness, but these are temporary in nature. Other, less common post-treatment effects may include temporary bruising or numbness on small areas of skin. As with any medical procedure your practitioner will review your full medical history and review the possibility for other rare effects with you.
Who should carry out a treatment? Ultherapy should be carried out by an experienced, reputable designated Ultherapy clinic or practitioner.
How much does it cost? The cost of an Ultherapy treatment can range depending upon the area being treated and factors such as geographic location and practitioner clinics. Prices range for a lower face lift between £1,850-£2,500 and for a full face lift between £2,750 - £4,000.
collage-building process, some patients benefit from additional treatments. Because skin continues to age, future touch-up treatments can help you keep pace with the body’s natural ageing process.
When will I see the results? After your Ultherapy® Treatment, you may see some initial effect, but the ultimate results will take place over 2-3 months, as your body naturally regenerates collagen. Since the procedure stimulates your own collagen production, how long the results last really depends on you. The treatment produces new collagen on the inside, but your natural aging process will dictate how long that translates into visible results on the outside. For more information on Ultherapy contact www.airaesthetics.co.uk Dr Claire Oliver (BDS) Clinical Director of Air Aesthetics.
E
How many treatments does a person need? Most clients only need one treatment. However, based on the degree of skin laxity, the biological response to ultrasound energy and the individual’s

rom smoking to teeth grinding, coffee drinking to the menopause, there are a number of lifestyle and ageing factors that play a part in our dental health.
IN YOUR 20S: This is often the party decade, full of fun nights out drinking with friends. But many alcoholic drinks have high sugar and acid levels that attack your teeth, especially the ones that have low calorie content such as champagne, cocktails and the mixers that go with them. And, depending on the amount of booze consumed, some of us might forget to brush our teeth altogether!
TIP: Try chewing sugar free gum to stimulate saliva, it also neutralises the acid in your mouth, Sipping and swilling water around your mouth during your night, might also help to get rid of the harmful acids.
IN YOUR 30S: From partying, to responsibilities… entering into your 30s can be a stressful transition. Many people of
this age suffer from teeth grinding (known as ‘Bruxim’). While the use of a night guard, regular dentist trips and even Botox (which relaxes the face muscles) can help, it’s the root of the stress that needs to be dealt with.
TIP: Try taking up exercise, and meditation. Incorporate a relaxing regime before bedtime.
IN YOUR 40S: Sadly, this is when your teeth start to yellow and become more susceptible to gum disease (a classic sign of menopause) – yes, it sounds depressing but it
doesn’t have to be! It’s the loss of enamel that makes the teeth yellow, so a good oral health routine is essential for looking after it. You should also: Avoid staining liquids such as red wine and balsamic vinegar or if you do consume them, eat green vegetables beforehand. This provides a protective layer over your teeth, Make regular trips to the dentist and hygienist.
TIP: Try a tooth whitening treatment for optimum results.
IN YOUR 50S: The nerves in your teeth become smaller, meaning they are less sensitive to cavities. To prevent these problems arising, good oral health care is key. In addition, you should: Make regular visits to the dentist and hygienist.
TIP: try to chew sugar-free gum. Drink plenty of water to prevent a dry mouth, which harbours plaque, causing dental decay.
REMEMBER, PREVENTION IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN CURE!

e have all done it, got a little tweezer happy, booked an appointment with a less than conservative therapist and have been left with pencil lines for eyebrows and wondered why we ever messed with them in the first place. The emphasis on beautiful brows is arguably at it’s peak and whether you have botched a home made attempt or succumbed to a dodgy therapists’ plucking misdemeanot, there are some solutions to minimize the stress of sorting out your brows:
1.Grow them back In the most severe cases it can take around 4 months to grow back your natural brows, but typically you can expect growth in around four weeks. In this time, try not to tweeze or you may risk getting carried away again. Wait as long as you can and then, once you think you have a good growth, seek a reputable salon to shape them properly.
2. Don’t use a magnifying mirror to magnify the problem Stop analyzing and leave well alone. You might feel like the world and his wife can see your tiny brow hairs sprouting their appearance, but in all sincereity they can’t. Resist the magnifying glass as it will only magnify the issue in your mind. If you need to, use a small amount of foundation and powder to conceal.
Resist the urge to use a magnifying mirror to analyse your brows – it will only lead to over-tweezing.
3. Disguise rogue hairs Filling in the brow is fine for the time being (you can always try HD Brows range of pencils and shadows for a more full and shapely brow) but don’t pluck the hairs that are growing outside of the shape you fill. Use some concealer to cover the tiny hairs but don’t go crazy as it can look cakey if you over do it.
4. Brush and groom Brush the brows when you fill them in. Before and after is the best protocol. This will give a much more natural look (the 60s Twiggy
look really is out) and leaving them un-brushed will only make them look more uneven. Use a pencil or powder to fake some wispy lines in the gaps where the hairs are not yet visible or may not be as thick. This is a much more natural tecnnique to use, rather than colouring in and leaving you with block caterpillar brows.
5. Maintenance is key Once your brows are back, it is important to maintain the shape and condition of them between therapist appointments. There are several brow conditioners on the market (most of which look like clear mascara) and Revitalash have also developed an advanced brow serum to speed up the growing process and to condition the hairs. Available at QVC.com.
