The Vail Valley, of course, is known for its winter sports, but it's just as popular as a summer vacation destination, too, with such activities as hiking, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking, fishing, tennis, and of course, playing golf. After all, the Vail Valley, with its resorts and villages, boasts more than 300 days a year of sunshine. The area also offers a variety of cultural events, such as the Vail International Dance Festival, Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, Oktoberfest and the Hot Summer Nights concerts at Vail's outdoor amphitheater at Ford Park. As far as golf goes, it doesn't get much better than the Vail Valley. With 17 championship golf courses within a 38-mile radius, and half of them open to the public, Vail's golf courses run the gamut -- from the Vail Golf Club at the foot of Vail Mountain, to the mountainous course at Eagle Vail Golf Club. The region's golf courses were designed by some of the game's biggest names -Pete Dye, Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, Tom Fazio, Robert Trent Jones -which counter the area's world-class skiing. Other popular activities include off-road tours, zip-lines, paragliding and shooting the rapids on some of the best whitewater rivers in the country. Cycling, both on and off road, is top notch in the valley, as cyclists take it through Vail Pass and beyond where cars can't go, but the bike trails continue. The area’s shopping scene boasts plenty of boutiques, galleries, gift shops, sporting good stores and specialty shops in towns and villages like Vail, Beaver Creek, Minturn, Avon and Eagle. And year-round, the Vail Valley offers some of the best hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, and resorts in the West, from the villages of West Vail to the Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch on Beaver Creek Mountain -- perfect for golfers and skiers alike. We look forward to seeing you on the links! 7 Eagle-Vail Golf Club Website: www.eaglevailgolf.com 431 Eagle Drive, Avon, 800-341-8051 What's the best way to describe Eagle Vail Golf Club? A river golf course? A mountain golf course? Actually, it's a little bit of both. It's also a pretty golf course ... and pretty tough. The 18-hole Bruce Devlin and Roger von Hagge design, which opened in 1974, isn't a long golf course by today's standards, but there isn't a lot of room for error. The only true mountain design for a public golf course in the Vail Valley places a high priority on shot placement, and you should as well if you want to have a good score. The tee shot at the par-5 first hole is elevated about 75 feet, there's the red barn at No. 2 (part of the area's agricultural heritage) and there are plenty of elevation changes and breathtaking views as you make your way around. But no matter what you call Eagle Vail Golf Club, chances are you'll be calling for another tee time once you've played there. Type: Public, 18 holes, par 72 Designer: Devlin/VonHagge Tee boxes: Blue - slope: 127, rating: 70.6, ydg: 6819 White -slope: 118, rating: 68.6, ydg: 6160 Red - slope: 122, rating: 67.2, ydg: 4856 Green fees (from June 27): Guest: 18 holes, $50-$92 Eagle Cty. resident: $45-$82 Tee times: Three days in advance Dress code: No denim, collared shirt and Bermuda shorts required, non-metal spikes only Practice: Driving range, practice and chipping greens Amenities: Pro shop, restaurant, beverage cart Misc. info: A real mountain-style course good for all abilities. Not over-long, plays up and downhill criss-crossing the Eagle River. Eagle-Vail also has Willow Creek, a 9-hole, par 3 course. Directions: West on I-70 to Eagle-Vail exit, left under the highway, take first left on Eagle Road, to Eagle Drive, go right to the course up the hill.
