Clothes moths love eating natural fibres, feasting on your wool and cashmere clothing and if they are hungry enough they'll also move on to synthetic mixes. These pesky moths can pose a huge problem to your gorgeous and well-loved garments. Many people use moth balls to combat their moth infestation. There are two different types of moth balls that are used to try to resolve the problem. In one type, the main ingredient is naphthalene, and in the other it is paradichlorobenzene. Both these chemicals are toxic to the larvae and aim to kill them with the fumes. In order for the moth balls to be effective they will need to be placed in a sealed container so the fumes can build up and kill the moths. If this process is not followed, or the clothes that were placed in a sealed container are not washed prior to wearing the garments they can be harmful to humans, especially babies. A solution is to open the containers outside and let the clothes hang and air out for a day before wearing. The smell of moth balls can be over powering so we are forced to ask the question - are these fumes healthy? Neither of these chemicals is particularly good for people to breathe on a regular basis so always make sure that you hang your clothes out to limit exposure or use natural moth repellent as an alternative. Moths love the dark and feed on the moisture in your clothes, particularly wool and cashmere. The female moth can lay up to 300 eggs in her 3 month life cycle so you can image how quickly a small infestation can grow quite rapidly and turn into a full on nightmare. Spot the signs early: If you notice holes in your clothes then this is often the first sign of a moth problem, there will usually be other indicators: - adult moths (often crawling rather than flying) - maggot-like larvae about the size of a grain of rice - the silken tubes or cases on your clothes - pupae (silk cocoons) in which larvae turn into moths Although moth balls are the most common, they are not the safest or the most effective. The best products on the market are moth traps, they break the breeding cycle of the moths and therefore wipe them out. Moth pheromone traps have no odour and attract male moths which stick to the adhesive strips.
