Remember the flip video by Cisco Systems? The Flip was one of the first and most popular products known as pocket camcorders. Flip videos were cool, but as cellphones like the iPhone 4 included HD video cameras market for a pocket camcorder went away almost as fast as it started. Well, almost went away. GoPro, a pocket camcorder made for rugged outdoor environments is still thriving and has been since its launch in 2002. GoPro is the primary brand for the company Woodman Labs Inc., based out of Half Moon Bay, Ca. Pre-2002 Nick Woodman, the founder and chief executive officer of Woodman Labs, moved back in with his parents. In an effort to get away from his parents Nick travelled and the coast of California surfing and developing what is now the GoPro HD Hero. Originally the GoPro was simply meant to be a small and highly durable camera that Nick and his friends could take surfing and on other adventures with them to document their most exciting moments. As he talked to people about his camera ideas they said, "I don't really want to buy one but I wish my friends had one to film me." That's when he stumbled on the key to GoPro, which has made the camcorder such a huge success: Mounts that attach the camera to all kinds of gear as well as make the camera wearable and hands-free. Watching GoPro videos, you can see everything from the camera attached to a surfboard to a camera attached to a helmet mounted in the way to see the users face. Initially, GoPro marketed to, and well received by, the outdoor sports community as a way of documenting the highlights of their life. In the past few years, it has expanded to the new and unexpected market of profession videographers. While GoPro takes extremely high quality photos and videos, it does not have all the bells and whistles of a professional camera and so was not marketed toward professionals. However many people high in the film industry have wisely taken notice of this special device because of its low cost and high durability in extreme situations. As of 2011, GoPro has been used on 60 TV shows, including Sarah Palin's Alaska, Myth busters, and The Deadliest Catch (to shoot crabs entering a crab pot at sea floor). Andy Casagrande IV, a videographer for National Geographic and Discover Channel, to shoot some footage that was never before feasible to shoot, also used GoPro. Namely he has gotten shots of sharks eating the camera, and the inside of the shark's mouth, by attaching GoPro cameras to seal dummies.
