Mobile Marketing in the UK Before talking about the effective capabilities of mobile marketing in the UK its well worth looking at some current statistics as the UK mobile device market is a very mature one. For example it is estimated that there are currently well over 74 Million mobile phones in circulation which is many more phones than there are people living in this great nation. Mobile Marketing in the UK Leads the Way in Europe If you consider the big 5 EU countries using mobile phones (UK, France, Germany, Spain & Italy) then the UK leads the way in usage out of all of them in most sectors as documented by comScore during the three-month average ending in September 2010. In the UK: 90.3% sent a text message compared to 82.1% average of the nations 32.9% used an application compared to 26.2% average of the nations 38.1% used a Browser compared to 27.7 average of the nations 25.8% accessed a social networking site or blog compared to 16.7% average of the nations 30.4% played games compared to 24.9% average of the nations So when you consider that currently, Europeans display the greatest use of texting with 81.7% sending a text message in June 2010, which outstrips the US of it's 66.8% and just 40.1% in Japan then globally the UK is probably the highest percentage text users in the world. Smartphone Useage for Mobile Marketing in the UK Smartphone usage is growing rapidly in the UK as it is everywhere else for that matter and the owners of Smartphones accounted for more than half of all the subscribers who received and claimed to recall seeing web/app ads. Throughout the big 5 EU countries, 50% of all 64.3 million smartphone users claimed that they could recall seeing a web or app ad during the 3-month average.
The good news for the UK is that it topped the rankings, having almost two out of three smartphone users claiming to have seen an ad while browsing or using an app. Video/TV Statistics for Mobile Marketing in the UK 12.1 Million Europeans watched some form of Mobile Video in July 2010 compared to just 7.3 Million in July 2009 which is an increase of 66%. Of those countries, the UK and Italy had equally the most with 2.1 Million each but the UK had the greater consumtion growth rate of 75% as it increased from 1.5 Million previously. Italy only grew by a meger 55% in comparison. Throughout the big 5 EU countries, two out of three users who viewed mobile video or TV were deemed to be on a Smartphone. Again the UK lead the way in this arena with 80.2% doing so. Mobile Marketing in the UK for Local Businesses The moble infrastructure in the UK is quite advanced and for local businesses the opportunity to reach their local clients is now quite possible. Some of the advertising platforms that serve the Smartphone arena can tightly focus their advertising campaigns down to the exact town, city or county level. However, some businesses reguard their country or the whole of the British Isles to be their local market and that too is possible. You can run several adverts or campaigns and target one particular product or service offering to let say just the Milton Keynes region and then another throught Scotland and another to the whole of the UK as the choice is yours. Being able to combine this with something like Google Places and Yell then any local business can really target their specific region very well and directly serve many potential local consumers. Smartphone marketing in the UK has the ability to concentrate on the demographic as well and it is now possible to specify the gender split of your target market along with the age range and the time of day you want to reach that audience, not to mention the exact days of the week in which you want to do so. Social Media and Mobile Marketing in the UK In the UK it is widely assumed that Social Media is accessed more often on mobile phones than on PC's which is pretty much the case in the US as well according to Sarah Perez in Feb 2010 who said "more people are using the mobile web to socialize (91%) compared to the 79% of desktop users who do the same. It appears that the mobile phone is actually a better platform for social networking than the PC". It seems to me that when you consider that Facebook has gone beyond 500 Million users and You Tube, Twitter and Linked-In having such a social and business draw of users as they do, then when you consider the growth of Smartphones in the UK and combine all these facts together; then reaching your target consumer via mobile is a no-brainer and we can safely say that Mobile Marketing in the UK is as good as anywhere in the world.
