Termite infestation at home can be a great hassle. Having them around at the wrong places can contribute to danger towards the people living in the house, and affect the appearances altogether. Yet, such infestation can be prevented. Here are some do-it-yourself termite controls you can do to prevent them from coming. When it comes to subterranean and dampwood termites, the type of do-it-yourself termite control you should do is to control the moisture that goes into your structure. With that said, regardless of type, all termites are attracted to moisture. Subterranean termites usually tunnels below the surface through the soil and getting their food like damp timber waste from underground. Thus, you will need to do keep your home structure dry at all times by keeping them ventilated, especially areas that get wet often like kitchen and bathrooms. If there are plumbing leaks, get them fixed or it will contribute an endless supply of moisture to the pests. Gutters and down spouts should end away from the house, ideally into storm water drains, so that water will not keep splashing into the structure. You should also resist having your garden attached directly to your wall because termites can find their way through the branches or roots into the structure easily this way. In the meantime, remove timber or cellulose material like cardboard, cotton, and firewood that are placed on ground, and place them on things that will allow at least 100mm of spacing from the floor. But if your entire floor is made out of wood, make sure that it is termite resistant or is treated with preservative. You can further enhance this by having metal slates between the wood and concrete so the termites will not find their way in too easily. The other type of termite is drywood termites. Like subterranean and dampwood termites, they also need moisture, but they can survive on much little moisture as compared to the other two. As long as the wood is slightly damp and is not on either extremes of the temperature, they will fly their way in and live there comfortably. As it may be difficult to keep away the slightest moisture, especially if you live in tropical and coastal areas, you can approach this problem by disguising the timber. Disguising timber means making them appear like non-wood, as they will be attracted with the presence of any wood. Coat them with pain or varnish on the exterior walls, especially where there is bigger surface area of wood, and at the ends touching the grounds. It is important to keep a single termite away from the wood as it only takes one female termite to find a place to live in, and a male termite simply joins in and tunnel their way through into heaven. Like humans, they need their food to taste right. Anything that tastes wrong, like added preservatives, they would avoid. Follow these tips and you would have prevented your home from becoming the termite's home.
