A less common but very important threat to your home and property value are termites, in order to treat them you will have to practice thorough termite control on your home and surrounding property. If you are building a new home consider having the timbers and frames treated with a borate salt solution, borate salt is a concentrated liquid salt that when sprayed and dried on the timbers the wood will 'absorb' the salt and become infused with it. When or if a termite comes along to eat your home they will take a nibble of the 'salty' wood and they will soon become dehydrated due to the salt. The content of salt will be too much for them to handle and they'll die off quickly, borate salt is also very good for preserving the wood and protecting it from various kinds of rot and fungi as well (it's a triple threat)! If you cannot or do not want to treat your home using a borate solution then the next best termite control method available is the trench method, this involves a lot of equipment and labor to manage efficiently, you will have to measure the perimeter of your home to calculate how much of a chosen chemical you will need (like Termidor). The trench method works against the termites biggest weakness, they have a near constant need for hydration, in order to retain moisture in their bodies they will need to return to the soil on a regular basis, if they do not then they will dry out and die, because we know they have to return to the soil you can easily treat the soil and when they go into the treated area they will die from the termicide you used. This termite control method relies on how well you treated the perimeter of your home and how close to the foundation that you dig the trench for your home. If you have a concrete slab (like a patio, a walkway, sidewalk, or driveway) you will have to treat the soil under these areas as well. Sometimes if the slabs have separated from the room to leave a large enough gap then you won't have to drill through the slabs to treat the soil. This is a very laborious method of termite control and it will take some time and study to accomplish correctly, but when it is done your home will be 'immunized' from termites for about five to ten years.
