MARKETING COFFEE IN SPAIN
Historical development: The year 1980 marks a before and after in the marketing of coffee in Spain: Until 1980: The coffee trade was controlled by the CAT (Commissariat of Supply and Transport). This body fixed quotas for each roaster coffee and qualities, purchase and selling prices. Was forbidden the sale of packaged ground coffee and roasted-natural-mixtures. Marketing was distributed by geographic area and supplied to local roasters. The containers have not met the current qualities and did not protect the coffee on factors such as humidity, air or light, long-chain-distribution was a challenge without impairing the quality coffee. All this made the market was highly segmented coffee roasters and have little room to grow. From 1980: liberalization of coffee marketing arrived. Authorizing the sale of packaged ground coffee and fueled the development of new technologies that allowed vacuum packaging, with it, the possibility of nationwide distribution. Data and References Consumption: Currently the per capita consumption of coffee in Spain reached the 3.9 kg year ( terms of green coffee), compared to Finland where they are consumed 08.09 kg year and Japan with a consumption of 2.5 kg in the Spanish case, our consumption amounts to 24,140 million cups a year or so which is the same, 599 cups per capita per year. Of the 170,000 tons of green coffee consumed in Spain, 58% corresponds to the home while 42% of hospitality, ie approximately 300,000 catering establishments serving coffee. Within the scope of most retail consumers they opt for ground coffee and instant coffee, while the hotel dominates the consumption of coffee beans. Regarding the types of coffee consumed at home, the leaders is natural over-roasted mix with a 45%, followed by 32% of natural standard roast. As for the roasting, coffee has a long tradition in Spain and Portugal, but the turnover is not very representative. Instant decaffeinated coffee has increase (15%), consumers are demanding more decaffeinated products. In reference to the times of highest coffee consumption, in-the-homes include breakfast and meals while away-from-home predominantly mid-morning coffee, followed by mid-afternoon. The preferred form of consumption is undoubtedly with milk, modality of choice for 56% of the population, especially when taken at home. In catering service, 75% of consumers would prefer the espresso. Encompassed within the hotel and motel segment should receive special mention Vending systems.Additionally, systems for automatic distribution of coffee are the norm in enterprises, government agencies, schools and health centers. Currently this segment represents about 80,000 machines dispensing 7,000 tons of coffee, representing 12% of hotel and motel volumes.
COFFEE INDUSTRY ASSOCIATIONS IN SPAIN The Spanish Coffee Federation, FEC, have Achieved a solid position as the federated body of all three national Associations within the coffee industry, Representing Approximately 90% of the total Spanish Coffee: Production and distribution - Spanish Coffee Roasters Association. AETC - Represents 85% of the industry - Spanish Green Coffee Association. AnCafe - Represents 92% of the industry -Soluble Coffee Manufacturers Assn Spanish. AEFCS - Represents 100% of the industry The federal nature of the FEC involves the integration of Associations which, in turn, bring together different companies depending on the area of activity in which they operate. Specifically, we distinguish the trading activity of green coffee, coffee roasters and instant coffee makers. Each of these areas has its own association, which comprise the board of the FEC: SPANISH ASSOCIATION Coffee Roasters (AETC) This association has a huge number of companies participating. The businesses in this association main activities focuses on coffee roasting. Founded in 1979, AETC currently includes 115 companies, representing over 90% domestic market share of roasted coffee. SCAE Spain, in 2012, has decided to increase its activity with organizing and promoting a series of events that will spread the coffee culture and help to increase the number of partners.
One of the most important milestones will be the conclusion of the Spanish Championship of Coffee 2012 for the first time in the capital of Spain, at the famous Ateneo of Madrid. For this, the SCAE has signed a partnership agreement with the company specialized in organizing gastronomic events and sponsorship management: COMUNITAC. This company, with presence throughout Spain, is precisely its headquarters in Bilbao and have the professionals needed to support economic model with a variable fee to achieve success for SPAIN SCAE, SCAE EVENT-HOUSE EUROPE and the development of WOC 2013-2015 at specific market levels its expertise resides in: -Attracting local sponsors, exhibitors, commercial management of events, and in this case the promotion of new partners to the SCAE. She introduced the concept, and it refers to the geography of micro-climates, which allows the production of coffee beans with unique flavor and unique characteristics that preserve their identity. Specialty coffee should always be well care for and prepared to the highest standards, fresh roasted and prepared are paramount to sales and marketing success. When the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) was founded in 1982, its founding members defined specialty coffee as "good preparation for a single origin and distinctive flavor." The SCAA became the standard bearer for the promotion of high quality coffee and helped promoted its expansion in the local markets. Today, is the world's largest association, with nearly 2500 members, and provides "events for the development, promotion and sustainability of fine coffees." Sustainability, quality and innovation in the Basque Country The Basque Country is a reference in EUROPE and SPAIN in matters of sustainability, quality and innovation are linked to the SCAE specialty coffees success. A clear example is the designation of Vitoria-Gasteiz as Green Capital 2012 (Green Capital) Community, an award granted by the European Commission and will allow the Basque capital to be the benchmark in this area throughout the year 2012. Another example of the commitment to sustainability of the Basque Country as the leader in the manufacture and use of electric vehicles. The model Vito E-Cell, leaving the Mercedes plant in Vitoria, electric van is the first mass-produced world. Also, postrecycling endeavor Ibil Basque company, the first company certified as green-cargo manager in Spain, was created by the Basque Government and Repsol. Euskadi, which only has 5% of the population of Spain, has an important weight in many important industries in the country (around 10%), especially in sectors related to energy, technology and innovation.
