17th may 2016

On reflecting on my statement of intent, I wanted to become more confident with my skills, taking on challenging projects, which push my abilities and professional competencies. I wanted to produce a portfolio I am proud of, exploring different areas of illustration to further my problem solving skills, showing I can work on a professional level. The work I have undertaken has had the purpose not only of meeting the needs of the brief, but meeting my own needs to assist me in my future employment. I have accomplished everything I set out to, the only element I haven’t enjoyed was the War Horse publishing brief, but I proved I could undertake this if needed. My work has improved in terms of quality and scope and is starting to take on my personality and style consistently, I feel my tone of voice is strong now. My final year experience has boosted my confidence and by undertaking briefs which were different have tested my drawing in a client environment, competitions, collaborations, I have explored how my motif work can be pushed across different platforms, I’ve not had to stray too far from elements of work I love, using them intuitively throughout. I want to further improve my digital skills, mixing analogue and digital, I have achieved that this year but as technology is ever evolving this is an area I intend to keep current. I’ve been able to pick briefs that felt appropriate to me, allowing me to critique and build upon my skill base in a really enjoyable way. I am certain now that illustration is my future career path, producing a range of work with high, adaptable visual quality. My statement of intent change during this module for various reasons. I took on two new briefs that I felt was more appropriate for my portfolio and practice and for that reason changed it with two other briefs. Sadly my space brief had to be abandoned in the end due to the workload and me being too ambitious with what I thought I could achieve. Also, because the other briefs were really strong for my practice, it felt that they space brief wasn’t bringing anything new to the module and my portfolio.

Deadline

18/01/16 Book Covers and inside illustration Rationale: I will be answering The Folio Society’s Book Illustration competition brief. This asked for a cover design and two inside illustrations for Michael Morpurgo’s ‘War Horse’. I am doing this brief as I struggled with book illustration during level 5, and I want to improve and show that I can do it! I intend to improve my narrative and composition skills. Brief 2: Deadline 19/5/16 Station to Station-‐Natural England Rationale:

A team from Educational Engagement who are working on a project with Natural England contacted me. I have been asked to create a logo/branding for a nature trial in Ingleborough along with illustrations based on nature and what you can see there. I will also be producing some illustrative products/stationary. This brief will improve my professionalism and experience working with real clients and to a paid brief. It will also stretch my design skills and show that I my work is adaptable which is important to me.

Brief 3:

Theme a month brief Rationale:

Deadline

19/5/16

I will choose a theme a month and produce a set of illustrations based on that theme. Using this I will also then explore different formats. This is to help me gather a body of work that shows and develops my illustrative voice

Brief 4:

Educations space material for schools/kids Abandoned!!!!

Deadline

TBC

Rationale:

During level 5 I found that I really enjoyed illustrating educational material. I thought space would be a fun, creative subject and allows for multiple platforms, media, formats and expansion. I will produce a mix of facts and activities. Brief 5: Deadline 20/3/16 YCN Royal Opera House Rationale: I have chosen to do a YCN brief as I feel it pushes me to produce work at a more professional standard. I also think it’s good to work on a brief that is in some way quite restricting, as it gives me an idea about working on real life briefs after uni. The deadline is earlier than some of the other which requires me to keep to good time management skills. This is also important, as Aggie and I have decided to collaborate on this brief. I feel that I need to improve on my collaborative and communication skills. Brief 6: YCN Royal Opera House Rationale: Produce a map of New York with the branding and title ‘Book-‐ it list’. The map will be produced both at a large-‐scale 84.5cm X 150cm and at a fold out a2 size. I will create additional merchandise to coincide with this map. This will be stickers and magnets. I will propose other maps that would work within the ‘book-‐it list’ branding along with a proposed ‘book-‐it list'
