25/2/20 14:39

HOW DID IT CAME ABOUT

“Tea” did not originate online.

As we see it , many slang words take off from the Internet, but not tea. Tea first came about in the 1600s in England[1], but let’s not bore ourselves with its long boring history; let’s get straight to the point. Many have said that it is originated from the drag culture, specifically the black drag culture. When first used, it spelled as T or tea, and it did not refer to the drink itself.

The Lady Chablis, a notable drag performer in Savannah, noted something about her dating life, that she avoids certain men because they were prone to violence when they “they find out about her T.”[2] T here is short for truth, but it also appears that T, which could spell as tea, has a double-edged meaning in the black drag culture. It could refer to a hidden secret about something or a hidden truth about someone— g ossip.

Yeah, My T. My thing, my business, what is going on with my life. — Lady Chablis quoted in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil John Berendt, 1994

WHEN DID IT STARTED TRENDING

Tea was popularized by the drag community

You might not know of this: Researches have shown[3], Gen Z is a generation that is known for being more open-minded and deeply invest in diversity and inclusivity. With Gen Z is becoming more open-minded, they more become updated on the drag culture than ever before. Thus, while the drag culture, especially black drag culture, gained its fame, so it made this double meaning application of tea. It’s spread far beyond black drag culture and into the mainstream.

In our everyday lives, there is so much gossip in the air. Sometimes we hear things which could be juicy news. Sometimes there’s just nothing that entices us into the news delivered to us by our friends, but with one single word, or letter depending on who you ask, ears perk up, and heads turn. It might not be the sweetest thing to do, to gossip, but it’s what keeps a conversation between friends even more interesting, sometimes. Spilling the tea and feeding that inner crave for scandals and drama and as you listen, casually sip on it as well.

HOW DO YOU USE IT

Tea can be sipped, spilled or served.[4]

In other words; Gossip can be enjoyed by listening to it, telling the story on it or exposing the drama. The usual way of using Tea is whenever you hear someone talking behind another person’s back for the first time; that’s when you cut in and say,

Receipts

25/2/20 14:39

HOW DID IT CAME ABOUT

Salty was actually from the mid-15th century.

Salty, the slang, has been around for a long time (even longer than we have known.) According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, it originated from the mid-15 century; “tasting of salt, impregnated with salt.” The term had gone through different changes in meaning until it first attested in 1938; to mean “angry and irritated.” [1] Salty has a rich history of how it came about and what did it meant, but it was still an unknown to why only in the recent years that the term had reemerged; Hip-hop and video-gaming.[2]

The Yum Cha Bunch—

WHEN DID IT STARTED TRENDING

Because of Hip-hop, it peaked in the early-00s then again in the mid-10s.

In the music industry; According to the worldrenowned lyrics website, Genius, this term "salty" hit its peak in the early-00s then again in the late-10s till today. Rappers like Eminem, Future, and Kanye West included the use of this term in their songs even till the late-10s. Salty, had slowly become a famous term to describe someone who is pissed off or irritated and just cannot let go of something in the past until today. Many rappers like Eminem, use the term "Salty" in their diss track, to piss off their opponent.

You dance around it like a sombrero, we can all see You’re f*ckin’ salty — Killshot, Eminem (2018); a comeback diss track to Machine Gun Kelly’s original diss.

l want to see the receipts — Whitney Houston on ABC Network(2008)

One of its first famous uses of receipts came in 2002. It was in an interview with the legendary soulful singer, Whitney Houston, by Diane Sawyer for ABC Network when Sawyer mentioned something which led Houston to snap. Sawyer had brought up the topic of a recent tabloid headline that accused Houston of buying a large amount of crack cocaine. While she aggressively denied these accusations, she demanded “I want to see the receipts, do you have the receipts?”[1] When the late 2000s and early 2010s rolled around, the phrase “show me the receipts” (adapted from Houston’s ‘I want to see the receipts’) became a joking reference— “meme” to the iconic Whitney Houston’s interview. From there, it became a general slang of demand for proof, especially in the setting of celebrity scandals and gossips.

It wasn’t really until the next iconic moment in celebrity history, if you have been following— because if you did not, you have missed out on a huge Tea. Receipts went crazy viral in 2016 as part of the bizarre relationship between artists Kanye West and Taylor Swift. Here’s what happened: Kanye had used Taylor’s name in his 2016 song in his “Life of Pablo” album, “Famous,” which Taylor claimed that was done without her agreement. In this heated accusation, Kanye’s wife, Kim Kardashian, posted a video on Instagram, which revealed that Kanye did get Taylor’s explicit permission. If you didn’t get the previous paragraph, in short— it went viral because of two famous pop star’s feuds, and from then, it became a viral slang.

A glo up is a new take on the phrase “grow up,”; a significant transformation to oneself for the better. The term, even though unsure of the exact etymology, but it can be linked back to August 2013 when a rapper called “Chief Keef” used Glo Up in his chorus. His desire to make serious money and summarized it by the chorus; “Bitch, you gotta glo up one day.”[1]

HOW DID IT CAME ABOUT

Wig Snatched is originated by the Black Drag Culture. As you have already known, a wig is a hairpiece in which people use it to make changes to their current hairstyle. They come in different shapes, sizes, and colors. Hairs are especially important as a staple beauty product for African women.[1] Their sub-culture is characterized by its glamor on stage, including their eye-catching outfits, dancing, and their statement-making hair. Wigs are the first look of a Drag Queen, and it defines their walk, clothes, and everything else. In other words, when a Drag Queen walks out with that perfect Wig, “Wig!”

25/2/20 14:39

WHEN DID IT STARTED TRENDING

The trend started to take off in 2018.

According to a viral meme source, Know Your Meme,[2] “Wig Snatched” hit the roof in the year 2018, because of Katy Perry. As she was on American Idol as a judge, she had made a casual comment on which she felt “wig” towards a particular performance, and the crowd took this slang to the mainstream. After that episode of American Idol, it flooded the Internet with crazy searches of “what does Wig means,” and Twitter blew up with tweets after “Wig.” As the word chart of Google shows, Wig hit the peak in 2018 right around the time Katy Perry mentioned it.

We are familiar with this word only as of the past tense of a verb meaning “to take or grasp abruptly or hastily.” However, it doesn’t mean being robbed in this case either. To get to know it better, we have to explain a little bit more on its sister word, On Fleek.

On Fleek On fleek was the original word for

HOW DID IT CAME ABOUT

“being on point,” “looking good,” until the

drag community bought up snatched, and it has been this way ever since. Snatched is the new on fleek. The term means looking good, hot as hell. On top of these, it also used to refer to someone who is being very sassy and smart.

25/2/20 14:39

WHEN DID IT STARTED TRENDING

The term is known in the drag culture since forever.

But we are only just finding it out because of the growing community of the drag queen community (thank you queens). Later on, as it grew into the mainstream, many celebrities and wellknown figures started to use it during their interview, especially on the red carpet as everyone looks flawless. Celebrities like Kylie Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Ariana Grande and more, have used it during their shows or some even in their songs.

Based on the world-renowned website for lyrics, Genius,[3] “Ballin’” was on a gradual rise ever since it dropped in 2005. It was under the influence of the early-00s Hip-hop where rappers have started to include the term, “Ballin’” in their music. Subsequently, “Ballin’” became a fixed term in and outside of the music industry.

HOW DO YOU USE IT

Flex is just showing off to impress others, really.

It is used usually when someone is being so obvious that they are not over it but they just won’t stop talking about how they are not over it yet. And when you find yourself in the same kind of situation, you can jokingly comment,

e.g A:

Look at him, he be flexin’ that new kicks

e.g B:

Flexin’ our works all day

HOW DID IT CAME ABOUT

Drip means you have the swagger, especially in the way you look.

According to Dictionary.com,[1] the term‘s origin is arguable, including among rappers. Hip-hop blog, HiphopDX, claims that the word is originated from the early-00s in Atlanta. At the same time, Urban Dictionary argues that it was from the early-2010s in New Jersey, while other sources are linking back to a Nickelodeon show back in the early 2010s, ‘Zoey 101’ where “Drip” was mentioned to be another word for “awesome.”

WHEN DID IT STARTED TRENDING

But, all in all, Drip is a metaphor.

You’re dripping in money, in gold chains and rollies*. As Bruno Mars and Cardi B has it in their 2018 phenomenal hit, “Finesse”— “we out here, drippin’ in Finesse.” The rapper who popularized it is none other the rapper we’ve all seen coming into the music industry, dripping herself— Cardi B.

Came through drippin’ / Diamonds on my wrist, they drippin’ (ice). — Drip, Cardi B ft. Migos (2018)

Drip is applied, particularly to people’s outfit; “wearing that drip, came in with that drip.” More than just the amount of gold you wear on yourself but also your swagger, your confidence.
